Old Printer Connection Issues

I am in need of connecting a HP Laserjet 4 Plus  printer to a new windows computer.
I bought a USB to Serial Cable (9pin) adaptor.
The printer driver is installed from the previous network connection and shows a greenlight check next to the state of the printer, but it shows that it is offline.
I cannot get anything to print.
The USB to Serial cable i bought came with a CD, but no instuctions on what to do with it.
Is the problem with the cable?  What do I need to do?
Thank you for any help.

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ .
I hope this helps.

Not sure what you mean: You didn't connect it directly to a USB port, you daisy chained it to the old printer? Or you mean you used the cable from the old printer?
I assume since you contacted HP, that you have the proper Driver/Software installed and they probably walked you through uninstalling/reinstalling. BTW, from my experience, HP printer tech support isn't all that wonderful and I wouldn't necessarily trust that they gave you the best advice.
What comes to mind is there was an HP printer update for Snow Leopard in Software Update, at least for my inkjet, which I'd been neglecting for ages. But when I finally installed it, it cleared up a number of issues. But, before updating, I was at least able to print and the printer was seen. Anyway, have a look in Software Update. I looked around the HP site for a standalone update and couldn't find anything.
If you give me the model I can probably find the most current software for it on the HP site.

  • HP Laserjet 4250 Network Printer Connection Issues

    Hello
We have a HP 4250 Laserjet network printer set up as a shared printer on our Windows Server 2003 32-bit print server.
We are using the latest PCL 5e 32-bit drivers and have now added the PCL 5e 64-bit drivers to accomodate a new Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Laptop. However, although it appears to pull the driver across properly, it fails to communicate and complete the installation with the following error:
"Printer Cannot Connect Operation Failed' error 0000007e
I have apoplied the hotfix addressed which addresses a similar problem but this made no difference.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981070/en-gb

  • Network an old printer connecte dto PC on my Airport net?

I have a fantastic old HP that works like a champ and prints at great resolution. Problem is it has IEEE and not a USB connection, so I can't connet it to my AX. I tried a USB converter and several 3rd party drivers, as well as upgraded firmware, but it is still not recognized. My question is: the printer is connected currently to an XP PC that is wireless capable. Can I somehow get this printer to be networked throught he PC and, if so, HOW??? I think there is a way to do it, I just have no idea how to begin.
And I am only consideringthis because in the past two days I have bought and returned THREE different printers due to incompatibility with the AX or because they just plain didn't work--am quite frustrated with printers, esp. since I have a fabulous one right here! Any help appreciated!

I solved the problem myself! (well ... I followed instructions from ifelix: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3004.html). I set up a network on the PC--but had to change the setting from "my computer connets through a gateway" to "other" and then "my computer connects to the internet through a hub" which the XP network wizard advises against. But THAT made it visible to my G4 when I installed the printer following the ifelix instructions. Works flawlessly!
I cannot seem to access the printer with the WEP security enabled, though, so am a bit concerned about that. Any ideas?

  • Printing connectivity issues

I was given a deskjet 940c printer today but have no software for it. I was told I could hook the printer directly to my hp beats laptop and get it to print, but it will not work. The computer says it cannot access the driver for the printer that i downloaded via the HP website. I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

    Hi fhizoo8,
Thanks for the information. After a bit more testing tonight I think I am getting somewhere.
Printing - I have this set up as a static IP on the network.  From this PC is does not print to the printer when networked (but from my work PC it will).  But set the printer as local via USB and I can print.  So take the network out of the equation there and it works.
Extender - direct connection from the PC to the extender did not work (though I was just using a very long patch cable and I think there is a different cable type to connect 2 devices).  Using the WAG160N and using the extender with a wired cable PC -> WAG160N -> DMA2200 and that does work.
Wireless only again and the ehshell process still hangs and is eventually killed off after 1minute 30 seconds.
I think this is pointing to a router issue.  I'm going to try to do a full reset and reconfigure of that tomorrow (10:30pm here and too late to start).
    Cheers,
    Brian.

  • Frustrating Printer connection issues

    Hi ALL
After reading many discussions, I still am unfortunately none the wiser & have a problem concerning my Canon MP170 printer that does not work with the Airport Express !!
Here's what the situation is in more detail 9if hopefully someone can help out with)
I Have a iMac, with Snow Leopard as the Operating Software
I have a Airport Express, which has successfully connected 2 other printers too my iMac
I have done a fresh install of the Canon MP170 software, with the Scanner software too via Canon's website
I have also downloaded the latest drivers from apple direct for Snow Leopard & all to no avail
When the scanner is plugged direct into my iMac, it works absolutely fine, but when plugged into the Airport Express, it gives a message the following message:
    Cannot communicate with Scanner.
Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off.
    Check Status.
    Scanner driver will be closed
    155.0.0
If anyone could help me with the predicament that i've had now ALL DAY, I'd well appreciate this
Regards & thanks for whatever advise is offered
    Jono

    Welcome to the discussions!
Sorry, but Apple clearly states that that the USB port on the AirPorts will work with compatible printers, for printing purposes.
Advanced features like scanning, copying, maintenance checks are not supported at the USB port on the AirPort. You will need to connect your all-in-one device directly to your computer if you need to use these other functions.

  • Weird printer connection issues

using the HP Photosmart B110 windows XP off desktop computer. linksys router, WAG160N If my computer is on and then i turn the printer on, the computer doesn't see the printer. the printer is connected to the network (and prints the test sheet to prove it) i have to restart the computer, and then they see each other. however, that was annoying, i was able to deal with it. now, i've just scanned a picture, and after saving it, they can no longer see each other! turning the printer off then on never solves this. i'm sure turning the computer off and then on will continue to let me scan one thing at a time but that is unacceptable! any help would be much appreciated.

  • Printing to USB printer connected to old iMac over Network

I have old Rev B iMac running OS 9 upstairs in the office, this has a USB printer connected to it.
Downstairs I have a Mac Mini running OS 10.3.9
Both these machines are networked together via a router. This all seems to work fine, I can see the drives of both computers from either computer.
My problem though is printing. I want to be able to print from the Mac Mini to the printer attached to the old iMac. I've done all the USB printer sharing business on the OS 9 iMac, but it still doesn't appear in the printer options on the Mac Mini.
Is this possible to do? .....looking through the help topics on my Mac Mini, there was several mentions of printing from OS9 to a printer connected to an OSX machine. But I haven't found any mention of being able to go the other way.

There is a way to do this, but it isn't easy. The grim details are:
    1. set up the iMac running OS 9 as a print server using the free utility Print66
    2. set up printing from the Mac running 10.3.9 in the Printer Setup Utility, choosing IP Printing using the LPR protocol, to the IP address of the iMac. Additional hurdle - you will need to use the third-party printer driver GimpPrint if you are using anything but a Postscript language laser printer on the iMac.
This will work, but unfortunately it is not an exercise for the beginner.
Incidentally, doing it the other way around is considerably easier (printer connected to and shared by the Mac mini running OS X). See Printing to a Mac OS X shared printer from Mac OS 9 via LPD/LPR

"have all been deleted but were not resolved, should I resubmit these issues or simply give up on submitting visual studio bug reports?"
Whether you should resubmit depends (IMHO) on whether the issues are still relevant. How old are the reports? What version(s) of VS are involved?
In your shoes, if the issues are relevant, I'd submit a question on Connect regarding the deleted reports, and ask why.
Please don't give up on reporting bugs via Connect. You know as well as I do that the vast majority, when validated, are being attended to by the dev team.

  • HP PhotoSmart 7510 suddenly has severe connectivity issues

I have a HP PhotoSmart 7510 printer since about 2 months. Initial setup worked like a charm and the printer has been working pretty much perfectly for the last 2 months. Wireless printing, scanning and internet access on the printer (e.g. for Facebook photos) all worked. Just from time to time i would get the occasional (mildly annoying) message on my computer saying "scan to computer is currently unavailable" but it usually worked itself out and whenever I needed it to work, it did work.
But since a few days ago, it has some severe connectivity issues. I didn't change any settings on the printer, router or computer - the issues just started appearing by themselves. I startet getting much more frequent messages on my computer saying "scan to computer is currently unavailable". I noticed I couldn't print anymore, and restarting computer, printer and/or router didn't help at all. The only thing so far i managed to print wirelessly since the problems started were the first 5 pixel rows of an image I tried to print, the rest didn't transmit.
It seems the printer still connects to the WLAN but printing and scanning no longer work, and whenever I try to access a web service on the printer (like Facebook) it says it has no internet connection, even though the WLAN light is lit up (not blinking) and all the wireless status reports say "congratulations, no problems found" and display IPs etc. just like normal.
I looked at the threads "PhotoSmart 7510 connects to router, but not to the web.", "Wireless printer (HP Photosmart 7510) not connecting to network" and "Photosmart 7510 won't connect to Web Services" but they weren't a big help. Activating EWS didn't work because even though the printer showed its IP address to be 192.168.1.3, when I entered this in my web browser it didn't find the printers configuration page.
I tried the following steps from one of the threads:
    1. Restore the Network defaults
    2. Unplug the printers power cord while it is still on. Leave it unplugged and walk to the router.
    3. While the router is still on, unplug the power cord from the router, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the router. Once plugged back in the router should power on automatically.
    4. Plug the power cord back into the printer. Once plugged back in the printer should power on automatically.
    5. Run the Wireless Setup Wizard to reconnect the printer to your wireless network.
    6. Try enabling Web Services.
I followed these steps exactly. Interestingly, even though I had done step 1 and restored the network settings to factory defaults, after turning back on, the printer somehow still had its old settings saved and reconnected to the network.
It seemed to have fixed the problem, the printer finally had internet access again (Facebook app showed my photos) and scan to computer found my PC. But after just about 3 minutes, the printer had lost its internet connectivity again. When opening the Facebook app, it displayed the same error message it did before. And printing no longer worked as well.
So, what is wrong with this printer?! It has the newest software update by the way (I checked during the 3 minutes it had internet access.) My computer is a HP Windows 7 x64 machine (EliteBook 6930p) and the router I'm using is a Netgear WNDR3700.
I specifically bought this printer for my studies at university. In one week i have my exams and in order to study I REALLY need to be able to print some of my course materials! So any help as quickly as possible would be greatly appreciated. Or do you think this is a case for a warranty replacement, considering the printer's really strange and error-prone behavior?
    Thanks a lot!

I can assure you that it is not a router issue.  It appears to me that it is a driver compatibility with Windows OS.  After trying to get to the bottom of this since my Photosmart 7525 was new and reading just about every forum and blog, I have come to the conclusion that the issue must be related to the HP driver itself.
The issue does not seem to affect any Mac systems, and from one forum someone was able to fix it by downloading new drivers compatible with 64-bit systems (which seem to not be affected by the glitch).  But that leaves us 32-bit people stuck with the current driver which does not work.
The printer is connected with good signal to the wireless router (no matter who's router it is and what configuration is made).  The printer can be pinged from the router and any computer on the network which is not currently being affected by this issue.  However, the affected computer fails pings by either request timed out, or destination host unreachable.  Pings are successful from the affected computer to any other device on the network.  The only way to recover (at least for a few days) is to reboot the affected computer.
Also, from the display on the 7525, the network tests pass without issue.  I can also download and print content from the internet with no issues.
Please do a quick google search of this issue and you will see several THOUSAND entries of people with the same request.  This is a serious issue that people are having and everything is pointing to an HP problem (not routers, improper installation of software or drivers, etc...).  I agree with several other customers that HP should be on the hook for this fix.  I will give it another couple weeks, then back to the store for a reliable unit from another competitor (Canon, Lexmark, etc..)
Thank you in advance for escalating this issue to product engineering,
    S. Hunn

  • Multiple Internet Connection Issues

Hi there, long time reader first time poster.
I figured I should post this as, while having read through hundreds of similar posts I still can't figure out how to solve my connectivity issues.
I just bought a new iMac 21.5 inch 3.2Ghz i3 model and while I am happy with the machine overall, it is the second one in a month - the first had a faulty ethernet port and refused to connect to the internet out of the box. Apple replaced it without question - almost as if they knew.
The replacement has now seemingly developed the same issue.
Some background info. The computer was connected both through ethernet and through the TC I bought to back it up until yesterday. So I was getting both a wireless signal from the TC and one through ethernet.
I have a hub that has 5 devices connected to it ( Printer, Cable TV, iMac and TC - now a PS3 ) That hub is served a signal by a simple NTT modem connected to a phone line. That modem is now nearly 5 years old but has always given great net speeds so I don't believe the problem to be the modem - I could be wrong though.
I just bought a PS3 and tried connecting it yesterday but had multiple problems. Despite me entering the correct PPPoE information to the letter, the PS3 refused to connect, saying the password and username was incorrect. I could connect it via a Bluetooth signal but no hard wired connection would work.
So I unplugged everything from the hub, shut down all the machines, turned off the modem and let it sit for 10 minutes and then plugged the ethernet cable from the PS3 straight into the modem, giving it a direct line. Switched on modem, rebooted PS3 and tried again - this time it connected through ethernet. I still don't know how or why. I can guess but I'm sure you guys know much more about this than I do.
So then I tried connecting the iMac back to the net, reconnected all the hub, followed the same procedure. Off, sit for a bit, on etc. This time the PS3 has no connection and now the iMac has no connection either!
The TC gave a green light though so I was able to get wireless. I tried removing all net locations from the iMac, installing new ones, renewed the DHCP lease, but no matter what I did (PPPoE info 100% correct) it just refused to establish a connection.
The the bloody TC light flashed amber and I couldn't get wireless either despite being plugged into the hub and getting a signal! The PS3 is now working and the cable is fine so I am starting to think either I have cluster ****** the whole setup or something is wrong with the iMac.
I go away for an hour then come back and the stupid TC has somehow picked up a connection! The light is green again?! But now the time connected display is scrolling repeatedly. I've got net but what the **** is wrong with all this?
Bottom line - not ethernet connection for the iMac but TC seems to be working and all other devices have a connection.
Please help me if you can! I just can't figure any of this out.

Your description is a bit confusing, but I use English as a second language, so it may be just me.
    1. How is the hub connecting to your modem, by ethernet cable or wirelessly?
    2. Which device is negotiating the internet connection with your ISP, the modem?
    3. Does the device that negotiates the connection use PPPoE?
    4. How are the other devices being handed their internet connection? DHCP only?
Only one device should be connecting directly to your ISP using the PPPoE protocol and configured with your account username and password. This device is preferably the modem. This device should be configured to hand out internal IP addresses to the other devices on your LAN using DHCP. All of the other devices should be configured to request an IP from that device, whether by ethernet or wi-fi, just with DHCP.

  • Internet Connectivity Issues

By process of elimination, I may have the right source of my problem, but may not!
Recently purchased a Time Capsule, primarily to replace my old Airport Extreme and extend its effective range within a new house. At the same time, I upgraded my iMac OS to Snow Leopard (so maybe this has caused a problem?!)
In the last few days have been having severe internet connectivity issues - either v slow speeds or so slow that Mail and/or Safari times out. My ISP tells me that their lines are working fine (I know they would say that, wouldn't they) and, admittedly, my old Powerbook (connected to the Airport network and onto the DSL router) is running Internet applications fine. So somthing seems to be wrong with the iMac or its setup.
Have run Network Diagnostics which tell me there's no problem (except it's still really slow!) and have obviously rebooted repeatedly (including the router and Time Capsule).
    Any ideas?

    Hello AnaB4,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you are getting a message to connect to server to update ink levels when printing with the 8620. This has been an issue since the weekend, server problems have been noted as the cause. The only resolution I know of at this time is to follow the steps here: Re: How do I correct the date on my HP Envy 4500?, or keep hitting OK.

I have a windows 7 64 bit HPavilion Elite 150f desktop set up wired with a 7510e photosmart printer connected to it wireless, now I  have purchased a windows 8 desktop HP envy 700-019 desktop.
When I set up my new windows 8 desktop I  just plugged it into my wireless router/modem combo and it found my printer and I could just print from it, I did not download any software or drivers for my printer or set up a home group as I was not sure how to set it up but last night I tried to set up a homegroup,
I used my wireless network key and entered it and pressed connect, then I entered the Homegroup password that was downloaded for me from Microsoft, but my windows 7 says homegroup and my windows 8 shows private network so I am not sure what I have done wrong, I chose to only share music and printers, can anyone tell me how to do this correctly as I am not sure that I have done it properly.
On my windows 8 I can go to my printers web site by entering the static IP address that cloud support set up for me and it shows as connected but I do not want to enter any printer code as that is already set up on my windows 7, I can also scan to email on my windows 8 but I am not sure what if any security I have on my windows 8. The last time I had a homegroup set up I payed someone to do it for me so I did it by guess work more than anything, if someone can lead me through it step by step I would appreciate it.

    Hi @emma22
I would like to do my best to help, but please bear in mind the issue you are expressing is an inquiry for Microsoft not HP. I did find something I think will be most helpful, and I hope it resolves the issue, but if the issue persists, or you have additional questions, it might be best to reach out to the Microsoft community.
Here is what I found; HomeGroup from start to finish.
In the top right hand corner of the article, you can change it from WIndows 7 to Windows 8. I hope this helps.
