On the menu bar the help button won't open a selected topic
under any application when question is entered into help box none of the suggested topics open, only a blank page

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I just recently installed mountain lion and an update for SMC firmware to install power nap. Everything is working except for the menu bar, the icons native to the system do not respond, and features like the clock and battery meter freeze.
When I mouse over the icons, the rainbow appears as if it was processing something. The problem is eliminated when I restart my computer but it comes back after a while.
I guess I cant make a backup copy and restore the whole disk because the copy would be made with this error.
Can anyone help me? Anyone with the same issue?Update: I was able to test out the HDMI adapter as well and the same issue occured. I'm stumped. 10.8.1 maybe.

My friend just bought a Windows 8 laptop so I told her to download the latest version of FireFox. Unfortunately, some idiot removed the Menu Bar which most people love. You can see all of your options in plain English. Anyway, I referred her to help and cannot believe it's so hard to get a simple answer to this question. Why does FireFox make it so difficult to get an old fashioned menu bar?
Help says, "Right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip and check Menu Bar". OK, what is a "TAB STRIP" and where does she find it? Who writes these silly, useless help tips?Grad, you made some good points but we still disagree. I'll acknowledge that maybe millions was a slight exaggeration but nobody has an accurate count. However, I do understand the difference between making something simple and obvious versus a programmer trying to prove how clever he or she is.

As for the number of clicks, I'm confused by your comment. My Menu Bar is always visible so I have to merely '''click once on Bookmarks''' to get to those menu options. It sounds as if you have to initially click on the orange FireFox button in order to see the Menu Bar, and then click a 2nd time on Bookmarks. That sounds like 2 clicks of the mouse to me.
I have Windows 7 and never saw Windows 8 so I can't comment on your excellent question. I personally had the '''Menu Bar displaying 100% of the time''' for as long as I could remember. I just couldn't remember how I initially turned it on several years ago and the help file proved to be more confusing than helpful. -
When I have less than three tabs open after having more open, Firefox does not display the tabs along the menu bar. This means I can't see tabs when I have two open. Is this a glitch?
Note: I am aware that I can set Firefox to always show the tabs, but I do not like this setting for when I only have one tab opened.Hi,

Try to move (delete) the Firefox plist file.
Go to "Library > Preferences" and remove the plist file for Firefox (org.mozilla.firefox.plist).

Can't get rid of an app's icon from the menu bar (the app is already deleted)
i deleted an app the old fashion way (1st drag it to the trash and 2nd empty trash). That App was Logmein. The problem is that now i have logmein's icon at my desktop's menu bar and can't get rid of it. Please help
You didn't delete all the application, of course. (There was an uninstaller, but I guess it's gone now.) You could try a search with command F for all Logmein stuff, make sure to include system files in your search. Maybe have a look in /Library/Application Support .

I was working on an email last night and must have set something on which I do not want. When I state firefox, it comes up full screen but without any menu or toolbars. Even when I move the cursor to the top of the scrren to reveal what is there, there still is no menu or toolbars showing.
If you run Firefox in full screen mode then press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle (Mac: command+Shift+F).

All my icons are missing from the Menu bar.. help!

I am using Firefox 28.0 on my Windows 7 64-bit PC. I would like to remove ONLY the menu bar and keep the orange Firefox tab. But when I uncheck the Menu Bar box, I not only lose the menu bar, I lose the three buttons on the very right of the screen as well - the minimize button, the maximize/restore down button, and the red 'X' close button. The space where these buttons ought to be is black. When I recheck the Menu Bar box, those three buttons on the right of the screen reappear!
I would like to know how I am to remove the Menu Bar but keep the minimize button, the maximize/restore down button and the red 'X' close button.

I tried your suggestions of using Safe Mode and a different Windows theme (2 different ones to be exact), but neither solved the problem. Each time I tried disabling the Menu Bar, the same 3 buttons disappeared and I got nothing but black space. It doesn't even fill the space with any background I may have. It's just black.
Additionally, disabling all my personas did not help, either. :(
I've been using Firefox for years now and I've never had this issue. It's always worked flawlessly for me. -

Is it possible--for me--to create a button on the menu bar for the "speech" option?
I use the "Speech" option to edit and re-edit my work. Somehow, I can catch clumsy prose faster when I hear it. It is a royal pain to have to many steps to get to that function: highlight everything, pull up the right click menu by using the contol button and the click, scroll to <speech> and then scroll to <start speaking>.
Does Pages allow one to create menu options? Is there any way to map that <Speech> option in the right click menu to the menu bar as a button? That would cut out a few steps for me.
I have a macAir running OS X 10.8.2
Page 09 version 4.2In Mountain Lion, the Option + Esc key combination (default) will speak from your Pages document until you press these keys again, or it will speak a selected passage of text. Alex is the default voice.
As a test, I just assigned a different key (F13 on my wired Apple keyboard). It warns you that there is no modifier key, and allows you to ignore this. Pages will automatically use the new setting. You can tailor your preferred keyboard shortcut:
System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Text to Speech
Check Speak selected text when the key is pressed, then Change Key...
If Apple's voices grate on you, you might prefer more natural, native voices from CereProc. -
The keyboard shortcuts for all of the options still work, but will not let me select anything with the mouse. The Apple key seems also not to allow selection of anything on the Menu Bar.
I can browse normally when this happens; it's not freezing or crashing. And I am able to click everything on the right side of the Menu Bar; the clock, wireless icon, battery, etc. Also, other programs running at the same time don't have this problem. A restart of Firefox seems to temporarily fix the problem, but it's happened a few times, with no clear pattern as to what is causing it.
Anyone else having this problem? Solutions?I fixed this, in a fairly brutal way. Here is the solution.
Save your bookmarks, like on the desktop. Or you could launch Safari and import your Firefox bookmarks into Safari, then later pull them back into Firefox.
COMPLETELY delete everything that has to do with Firefox. That includes not only the application, any dmg file hanging around and most importantly the ENTIRE contents of User/Library/ApplicationSupport/Firefox. Indeed just throw the whole Firefox folder in the Trash. Empty the Trash just in case. Now use Safari to download a new Firefox.dmg file and start from scratch. You will have to re-establish your Preferences. But Firefox will not hang, and most importantly, it will not hang your OS. --Gene -
I installed Firefox 4 on my Vista based PC, and there was not Menu Bar nor was there a Status Bar. I followed the instructions in the help article, but I couldn't get either tool bar to appear. The main problem was I did not get the temporary Menu Bar when I pressed the Alt key and released it. Since I use the Menu Bar all the time, I ended up reinstalling Firefox 3. From what I saw of Firefox 4 it seems to be a good upgrade, but I need my tool bars. Is there some other way to get the Menu bar without using the Alt key?

I am unable to shut off my laptop because I can not close the mail app. Command Q doesn't work. While "quit mail" shows up under FILE on the menu bar, it is faded and not a working option. Mail appears to be frozen. I also can not pull up the mail page despite the app being open. Clicking on the mail icon does nothing and there are no available options under the menu bar. Help, please!
