ONS 15454 SONET Rel 4.1.0 upgrade

I am upgrading a node from 4.1.0 to a newer release and after successful activation of the new load, the shelf does not reboot. I get a CONTBUS alarm on the standby TCC, regardless of which TCC is active. The protect version never goes active. Has anyone seen this before?

When you say "show up" do you mean under inventory or looking at the card in shelf view? Also, what release are you upgrading to?
Cheers,
Tim

  • Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSPP

I am doing a school research project in which I am setting up an OC-192 ring for a company (contract work through AT&T). I have chosen to use the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSPP as my platform. The company currently has locations in Chicago and Philadelphia and connects them through an OC-12C ATM connection and they are looking to add 2 gigabit ethernet connections.
My question is what cards and parts will I need for the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSPP, and how much will everything cost? I have been searching the internet for components and prices and I have found it extremely difficult to find any information. Any help or tips anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Nick,
You can find the HW specifications for various ethernet cards for the 15454 at the following location.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_1/15454/sdh/reference/guide/454e91_ethernetcards.htmlhttp://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_1/15454/sdh/reference/guide/454e91_refer.html
To make sense of it all, you need to contact a Cisco sales/account represetative to help you analyze your needs, design your network and put together a price list for the appropriate cards.
If you are interested, I can get someone from the sales/account team to contact you.   Please contact me directly with your contact information and geographic location so I can find the appropriate sales/account to help you.  Please do not post your personal information directly to the forum.

  • Timing over an ONS 15454 SONET link.

    Hello,
Are there any provisioning restrictions on passing timing over a SONET link on the ONS 15454. Here is the senario; I have an OC-48 provisioned over Slot 4, port 1-1 on an MRC-12 card. On the Line provisioning tab, I am unable to set the ProvideSync check box. I need to use the link to time a distant end node. The far link is RX the STU SSM. The local Node is set for external timing with BITS 1 and 2 active and inservice w/PRS. Is there something I am missing?
    TIA,
    Steve

    Steve,
The OC48 port is always providing timing information to the attached device in the S1 byte of the Line Overhead.
The ProvidesSync box is not an indication of whether the port is providing timing.  Rather it is an indication that that port is being used as a timing source  (Line Timing).  If you go to Provisioning->Timing and select that slot/port as a Timing Reference the ProvidesSync box will be checked.
I will upload a Word document with screen shots. It should help clear things up.

  • ONS 15454 Version 8 Experience?

I'd like to know the experiences of anyone who has upgraded to SW version 8.0 on ONS 15454 SONET nodes. I'm trying to decide whether to use the tried-and-true 7.2.2 load or go for 8.0, which doesn't have any maintenance revs out yet. I have to do something to get off version 4.6.1 and 5.0.5 soon.
    Thanks,
    Dave

most that I log into are on 7.2.2. We have one of the largest 15454 networks in the US

  • Upgrade ONS 15454 M12 TCC2P from 9.4.03 to 10.0.11

    Hello,
    quick question.
I have in my lab one M12 subrack with only-one TCC2P card and I try to prepare software upgrade in customer network.
I read all procedures at: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/optical/15000r/upgrade/guide/b-454a10-0-1-upgrade.html
My troubles started at point where I can select node where the software must be downloaded. The window is empty.
    Target version is "ons15454.DWDM.Lite.K9.R10011.pkg".
    Any idea?
    Thanks
    kvapa

    Hi Emyrsonn,
I hope this ONS 15454 upgrade tool can help you answering all your questions
    http://www.cisco.com/web/techdoc/optical/15000r/upgrade/guide/ons-upgrade.html
It seems like you should be able to directly upgrade from 9.1.x to 9.2.2.
Please let me know if you have any comments on that.
    Hope it helps!

  • Mixing SONET/DWDM Cards in a ONS 15454

    All,
To my understanding, there are some limitations to mixing SONET line cards with DWDM line cards in the same ONS 15454 chassis. I believe one of the limitations had to do with the line card placement versus a OSC-M and OSC. I can't remember the draw backs of doing the above, but there was some negative.
Are there any more draw backs, limitaitons or gotchas?
Also, generally, the optical engineers I spoke to recommended never mixing the cards and keeping them in seperate chassis.

    Hello Jason,
Mixing SONET/SDH and DWDM functions in the same chassis is a supported configuration on the ONS 15454 platform.
As was stated in the other posts, you would have to install the SONET/SDH crossconnect cards in the chassis in order to have the HO/LO functionality.
You are right, that there is an impact on the card placement in the chassis, however you can force the planning tool (Cisco TransportPlanner) to leave the required slots for the XC cards empty when designing the DWDM network.
The model described so far is what is commonly referred to as a "hybrid" node.
There is one other element in the toolchest however - The ADM-on-a-Blade (see http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/optical/ps5724/ps2006/ps5320/product_data_sheet0900aecd805f0e80.html). This network element is an integrated part of the DWDM personality of the ONS 15454 and provides SONET/SDH switching and client ports on the blade. Please note however, that this network element provides only a high-order crossconnect.
It is generally true that one would usually keep SONET/SDH network elements in separate chassis. However, from a network management perspective these separate chassis can form a single node.
    Hope that helps
    /Dirk

  • ONS 15454 MRC 2.5G4

    Hi All,
We are trying to install the optical multirate card (MRC 2.5Gig) on ONS 15454 and found the card comming up on standby state instead of active. The version running on the sonet box is 8.5.0 ...The MRC card port 1 is installed with the OC3 SFP's but cable not attached.
Any help would be appreciated .
    Regards
    Anantha Subramanian Natarajan

Hi, this is normal. Just go on and enable a SFP, called pluggable port module (PPM). After the first SFP is enabled, the state of the MRC card will change to working.

  • ONS 15454 MSPP Recommendation

    Currently Being Moderated
    ONS 15454 Recommendations
    Hello Guys,
Just looking for some recommendations / best practices from experienced ONS 15454 engineers for the following questions.
    Scenario:
There are 2 sites located 130 km away from one to the other and we want to provide a wan connectivity via ONS 15454.
    Questions:
    1. The ethernet / DWDM modules preferred
    2. The typical wave length will be used -- 1550 or 1310?
    3. What are the speeds supported on the modules?
    4. What should be the recommended max losses / power budget for 130 km for Cisco ONS to work properly?
    5. Any specific recommendations.
    Thanks & Regards
    Jay

    1. The ethernet / DWDM modules preferred
    GE_XPE, 10GE_XPE,  OTU2_XP, ML cards,
CE-Series 10-Port Multirate Ethernet Card, 10DME, MXP, 10x10 there are lot of cards depends on your requirement, line rates coming from WAN device, types of module present on WAN side.
    2. The typical wave length will be used -- 1550 or 1310?
depends if you looking for a SDH/SONET solution, will say 1550, if DWDM than it will be composite siganal with MUX/DMUX.
    3. What are the speeds supported on the modules?
    10mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps, 1Gig, 10Gig, 40gig and 100Gig depends on your requirement :-)
    4. What should be the recommended max losses / power budget for 130 km for Cisco ONS to work properly?
around 35dB to 39dB of span loss, looks you need amplification.
    5. Any specific recommendations.
we need to discuss your requiremnets, there are lot of sloution available.

  • Does ONS 15454 SDH supports TACACS+ ?

    Hi,
We are currently managing 16 ONS nodes in our customer environment and we need to implement AAA using TACACS+ to those ONS chasis.
We are currently using default Superuser account, and we could only find support document related to RADIUS but not for TACACS+.
Does anyone have implemented authendication on ONS15454 SDH with TACACS+ and do let me know how to implement it ? If not, does we have any Cisco document to clarify why it is not supported ?
    Thanga

    Thanga,
AAA is not supported but RADIUS is.  Use DLP-A456 (Configure the Node for TADIUS Authentication) to set up the ONS 15454 to use Radius.  It is in the Procedure Guide for the ONS 15454.
If you have any problems please call 800-553-2447 to open a TAC case.

  • ONS 15454 VT1.5 Circuit Rolls

I am having some issues with VT1.5 cross connects that we tried to roll, but are still in a pending roll status. We rolled the circuits in preparation of moving our ONS's into a BLSR ring. All of our ONS's are in a BLSR ring now but we are unable to delete any of the old VT1.5 cross connects.
We have tried working with the UPSR Selectors to bounce the VT1.5 cross connects and were able to delete most cross connects from the terminating ONS they were built to roll to, but we are not able to delete or complete the rolls on the ONS we originated the roll requestes.
We have also tried logging into TL1 to delete the cross connects but we only get errors stating that "The cross connects could not be deleted"
Does anyone have any thoughts on how we can delete these cross connects from our ONS?

I thought you might have too old of a release to support the operation, but that doesn't seem to be the case. From your attempt to use TL1, Field Notice 63053 (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/ts/fn/New/fn63053.html) also does not seem to apply.
Are the circuits single or dual rolls? Single- or two-circuit? I'm only asking to point out that the reference manual (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r7_0_1/15454/sonet/reference/guide/r701circ.html#wp161731) has constraints and procedures that vary according to those characteristics.

  • BITS Out question on an ONS-15454

I have a user that has a two node 15310CL network that is not optically connected to my ONS network. He needs a PRS level timing source for his network, but there is no external timing source available to him in that building. Can I program the ONS15454 BITS-1 out to provide the external source to his network? My 15454 is configured for LINE side timing.
If this is possible, what would be the Cable pinout be between the 310CL and the 454?
    Thanks for any help.
    Steve

    Steve,
The 15454 can provide a BITS-OUT to the 15310 via the BITS-OUT wire-wrap pins on the back of the15454 Chassis.
The 15310 CL has an RJ-45 connector for the BITS Input with Pin 6 (-) and Pin 3 (+).  Here is a link to the user documentation that covers the pinout for the 15310 CL:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_0/15310/sonet/procedure/guide/310a90_dlp0.html#wpxref12757
And Here's the link for the 15454 Pins:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_0/15454/sonet/procedure/guide/454a90_dlp0.html#wpxref12757
    Tip = (+)
    Ring = (-)
To connect between the two, conect Tip(+) to Tip(+) and Ring(-) to Ring(-)
You will then need to enable the BITS-IN on the 15310 as the Timing source
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r7_0/15310/15310_cl_ma/procedure/guide/3107ndtu.html#wp108999
And the BITS-OUT on the 15454:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_0/15454/sonet/procedure/guide/454a90_dlp0.html#wpxref98779
BITS-1 Out/BITS-2 Out—Define the timing references for equipment wired to the BITS Out pins on the backplane. BITS-1 Out and BITS-2 Out are enabled when BITS-1 and BITS-2 facilities are put in service. If Timing Mode is set to External, choose the OC-N card used to set the timing. If Timing Mode is set to Line, you can choose an OC-N card or choose NE Reference to have the BITS-1 Out and/or BITS-2 Out follow the same timing references as the NE.

  • 6509 to ons 15454 showing not connect.

Were running into a problem moving from an oc48 to oc192. In our web enviornment we have a Front-end switch and a Back-end switch in two data centers that are 10 miles apart. Were running a "gigaman" betweent the two. On both ends we have cs6509's and were patched into the Gbic interface on the sup2's. This fiber is ran to are lec's ons 15454 which I have no visibility into. We are unable to get a connection on the 6509's. Were doing basic layer 2 trunking between the switches. Sbc tested from the fiber on the switch to a loop on the other switch and was able to test clean. This worked on the oc-48 but are switches were not connected to a cisco ons. Any suggestions would be apperciated. You can also email me at [email protected] or AIM jjt8572.

Have you checked that you have matched the physical media framing - e.g., LAN PHY needs to speak to LAN PHY (or WAN PHY to WAN PHY). Typically the ONS 15454 would be looking for a SONET frames (WAN PHY) while a Cisco 6509 would be sending 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN frames (LAN PHY). That is, unless you specifically choose an interface for your 6509 such as the XENPAK-10GB-LW (10GBASE-LW XENPAK Module with WAN PHY for SMF). From that product's data sheet: "The Cisco 10GBASE-LW Module supports a link length of 10 kilometers on standard single-mode fiber (SMF) (G.652).
WAN-PHY is intended to allow the transport of 10 Gigabit Ethernet over a traditional SONET/SDH infrastructure. The purpose of WAN-PHY is to render 10 Gigabit Ethernet compatible with SONET STS-192c format and data rate, as defined by ANSI, as well as the SDH VC-4-64c container specified by ITU."
One can also use Cisco ONS transponder cards that will wrap LAN PHY framing in something like G.709 encapsulation to allow it to be transported through a DWDM network.

  • Dual Ring Capabilty for ONS 15454 MSTP

    Hi!
I am designing a MPLS over DWDM network which consist of one core DWDM ring and several regional DWDM ring using ONS 15454 MSTP. I would like to connect the regional ring to the core ring via P router in this case Cisco 12406GSR. My major concern now is to reduce the number of boxes especially on the DWDM part. Can an ONS box connect to 2 DWDM ring, regional and core directly without using a router in the middle. Apreciate your expert opinions. Thanks.
    Rgds
    Helme

Core DWDM ring and Regional DWDM ring are built using ROADM cards for full add/drop flexibility. Wavelengths can be engineered to pass between rings by physically patching at the wavelength level. By using the Mesh/Multiring Upgrade card (available today - see data sheet below) you can prepare the network for Degree-N capability, allowing multiple rings to be connected via a single point with dynamic wavelength provisioning across the rings.

  • ONS 15454 error message

    Hi Expert,
I have a problem with ONS 15454 error message. My CTM server detected MINOR error message "Peer to Peer Slot Communication Failure". Affected object is SLOT-1 which is OPT_BST. The alarm ID is 200551. What caused this error appear and any workaround to solve this problem?. Your kind attention is much appreciated.

Although the following alarm is not identical to the one you identified, this seems to indicate the a peer "communication failure" is hardware related.
    2.5.237 PEER-NORESPONSE
Default Severity: Major (MJ), Non-Service-Affecting (NSA)
    Logical Object: EQPT
The switch agent raises a Peer Card Not Responding alarm if either traffic card in a protection group does not receive a response to the peer status request message. PEER-NORESPONSE is a software failure and occurs at the task level, as opposed to a communication failure, which is a hardware failure between peer cards.
    Hope this helps....
