Open encrypted file

Hello guys. This question may have been asked, but I couldn't find the right thread. So, here it goes.
I have an encrypted (using blowfish encryption algorithm) binary text file that I want to only be opened using my labview app.
This text file will be open to the public so anyone who has this app can open and use the text file.
So far:
1. I generate a unique password and I encrypt the text file with this password.
2. I then ENCODE this password using the yEnc encoding algorithm.
3. I then store this encoded password inside (at the beginning of the encrypted text file and END the password with a CR).
4. When the app reads this file it reads the first line of the encrypted text (looking for the CR as the termination character).
5. I then DECODE that first line (to extract the original password), and use this password to DECRYPT the rest of the text file.
The reason I am approching it this way is because this app generates 2 types of text files.
a. A personal encrypted text file which only the specific user of the app (with his/her username and password) can read/use it.
b. A public encrypted text file which ANY user using this app only can read it (as explained on the text above).
Is there an easier way of dealing with the above problem? Any suggestions are appriciated.
Thanks
Kas

What about a zip file because you can just zip the file with a password.
So I take my text file (and any other files) zip it using the OpenG zip utility (because it supports passwords).  Without knowing more details about how you want users to be restricted, I'm not sure how to help.  What exactly are you trying to accomplish and how should the system lockout users?
Depending on your needs you could just use some kind of Windows security that blocks access from certain users.

  • HT1338 I cannot open encrypted files/folders on my back up disc.

Hi, I created an encrypted disc, with disc utility. It is a .sparseimage type file, 128 encryption, password protected. I can open it on my Mac no problem, I took the password off the keychain (as advised) and if I try to open the disc (which I placed in "Documents") once I enter the password, everything opens fine.
The problem is when I try to open the files on my back up disc (I use an external hard drive to back up everything, via time machine) I get this message after entering the password" The following disc images could not be opened" and in a smaller box underneath, the relevant disc is named and it says this next to it"no mountable file systems".
So if my Mac was to crash and I needed the ext. hd as a back up for recovery, currently, the encrypted files cannot be opened.
    Can anyone please help?
    Many thanks,
    Michael.

How do you copy it to the backup disk? That error generally means that the file didn't fully copy over.
Open a Terminal window. Type 'md5', space, and then drag the sparseimage file that works into the Terminal window, and then press return.
Do the same think for the sparseimage that doesn't work.
If they are the same file, they should have the same MD5 value. If the codes don't match, the files are not identical.
Do a Get Info on each file and see if they are the same length.
The only thing I can think of is that file is not completely copied or the external disk is formatted as a FAT32 (Windows) disk, in which case, files can't be more than 4G and if your image is larger than that, it will get cut off.

  • Urgent! Can't open encrypted file under the same user.

My system is X61s, Windows XP pro sp3.
There is no change of user account, no reinstallation or recovery of system.
I used EPS encrypted some of my important files last month. Without any user account changes and system reinstallation I suddenly can not open the encrypted files anymore. I am aware that the change of user account or reinstalling the system will change the encrypted ID, then the encrypted file will not be opened unless there is a digital certificate of the user that encrypted the file. However I have been using the same user account since I bought the laptop and I have never reinstalled or recovered the system.
I have tried to encrypted some other files and these files can be opened without any problem. But only the file that I encrypted about a month ago can not be opened.  Those are very important files for me. Can anyone help me to get my files back please!!!

hello you did not mention any error messages you were facing??
i can only assume you are getting the follwing messages if you try to open an encrypted file...
Cause: Encrypting File System (EFS) only works on files and folders on NTFS file system volumes. If the folder or file you are trying to encrypt is on a FAT or FAT32 volume, the Advanced button does not appear in the properties of that folder or file.
    Solution:
Convert the volume to NTFS with the convert utility.
    Open command prompt
    Type:
    convert drive /fs:ntfs
where drive is the drive letter of the intended drive.
"the recovery policy configured for this system contains an invalid security certificate" or "BAD_RECOVERY_POLICY" OCCURS
Cause: The Encrypting File System (EFS) recovery policy implemented on this computer contains one or more EFS recovery agent certificates that have expired. These certificates cannot be used.
    Solution:
Either renew the existing certificates or generate new certificates for the EFS recovery agents and reapply the recovery agent policy with those certificates.
the acess denied message occurs when trying to open an encrypted file
Cause: The file was encrypted by Encrypting File System (EFS) using a public key certificate and the associated private key for this certificate is not available on this computer.
    Solution:
Locate the private key for the appropriate certificate and import it onto this computer using the Certificates snap-in.

  • How can I open encrypted files from a flash drive?

I moved transferred files from my work PC to a flash drive and had to encrypt them using Credant.  I know the password but can't find a way to decrypt the files on my mac...

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

  • Unable to open encrypted files moved from PC to Mac

I am running Acrobat Pro XI on a PC (Windows version 8.1) and Have Acrobat Pro XI (Mac version) on a new MacBook Pro Retina 13".  I am able to "transfer" files from the PC to the Mac via Dropbox.  However, only the unencrypted files will open on the Mac.
As soon as I use a password to encrypt the file on the PC (i.e. Password merely for opening the .pdf file) and then trf via Dropbox to the Mac, it (the Mac) returns the message ...  "The password is incorrect.  Please make sure that the Caps Lock is not on by mistake and try again."...  I have tried repeatedly , checking Caps Lock/Password etc.  The password is correct and works fine on the PC.  I have even tried re-installing Acrobat on the Mac but this has made no difference.
    Assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, that still leaves two questions
    - What version of Acrobat or Reader is in use on each system?
    - Did you use any special character in the password?
    To that I would add
    - Do you use a hyphen in the password?

  • Invoke Adobe reader in BB10, how to open encrypted files without prompting for password.

    Hello All,
I am developing a BB10 application that invokes Adobe Reader as a card for viewing my encrypted pdf books, all books have the same password and I don't want to expose the password to the users to prevent copying copyrighted books. Is it possible to pass the password as parameter when invoking Adobe reader ? if not, is there a trick that can be used to prevent the user from using the options "Share" and "Save As" in card-invoked Adobe reader ?
    Thanks to all.

PS Touch can't open PSDs locally. They have to be imported via Creative Cloud (and even then, they are flattened when imported).
I imagine this was a "quality of life" decision since PS Touch can only support up to 16 layers in a particular project. That and maybe the fact that Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements) can use layer masks, which PS Touch doesn't presently have.

There are several ways for doing this here are some:
    microsoft.com EFS

Using CertMgr - for Vista (but not only - not shure)
Or just try Google for "EFS Key Backup" or EFS Key Expport...

    Hey guys,
So this is follow up from my debarkle with the EDD. I found out my problem with copying files from Mac to EDD and vice versa was a result of a not so good EDD ( i had an apollo hard drive from imation) that was not very compatible with macs. So i did my research and found out that the best hard drives were Western Digital and Seagate. I bought the newest western digital EDD 1TB and formated it to FAT32 and guess what...no problems so far. The only problem is that FAT32 format doesn't copy files larger than about 4 gigs so i couldnt copy a movie from my brothers computer onto my EDD that was 1080p. You could probably resolve that by partitioning a small part of your hard drive in ExFAT? but yeah, hopefully that helped guys.

  • Access Denied when trying to open a file that is encrypted on network share with EFS

I just recently enabled EFS on the default domain policy and created a new network share, encrypted a file and added myself to that file and tried to open the file from my workstation.  I then receive an error "Access denied", I also tried
to create a file and encrypt it on that same share and get an error "The requested operation cannot be completed.  The computer must be trusted for delegation and the current user account must be configured to allow delegation."
    My steps.
    1. Enable group policy for EFS, removed the expired certificate that was already there and Created a new Data recovery agent.
    2. Created a network share, created a test file, enabled encryption on the file
    3. certmgr.msc, personal and requested a new certificate, Basic EFS
    4. On the network share and properties of file, advanced, details and added the user
    5. from the workstation tried to access the file, Access Denied.  I can create any file I won't just can't add attributes to encrypt the file or open an encrypted file
Now if I go to the server where the CA is located which is also the AD server and create share and run the same process it works as expected.  I'm guessing I have to export the cert from the CA server as a pfx and import that to both the server that
has the network share and the workstation but that still doesn't seem to work.  Maybe I don't understand how EFS works and this is not possible?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are correct in not understanding how EFS works.
When you connect to an encrypted file via a network share, the encryption/decryption takes place *on* the server. To enable over the network access, the server's computer account must be trusted for delegation.
The server actually impersonates the user and creates a user profile on the server (containing the defined EFS certificate and private key). The important thing to remember is that the files is transmitted in clear text from the server to the client.

  • ENCRYPTED "FILES" (NOT DRIVE) IN XP WON'T OPEN IN WINDOWS 7

Because I did not want to move to windows 7 in April 2014 (I was happy with my computer setup and functions), I was advised by a friend to encrypt my files (not drive) in order to be safe in continuing the use of Windows XP O/S. I encrypted several thousands
    of files using Windows XP.
Some months after this, I had an experience with the computer crashing due to overheating, not a virus attack, thank God. My usual repair person in my building got the computer up and running and said I could pick it up. I figured that this was probably
a good time to have Windows 7 installed on my computer and I instructed him to do so.
I failed to inform him that I had encrypted several thousands of files in XP. These files no longer open in Windows 7 after transferring them back to the C: drive.
Is there a RESTORE ENCRYPTED FILES FOR DUMMIES that someone can suggest? The data lost spans almost 20 years; music, reading material in pdfs, important documents, vacation photos and photos of my 2 deceased cats, etc.
As I mentioned before, the files are on an external drive. Please advise at your soonest.  I will provide any helpful details to assist. Thanks!

    Hi,
As Luca mentioned above, it's important for us to know how you encrypted the files in Windows XP, If you were using some third party tools, then you might need to contact the tool vernder to find a solution.
If you were using EFS, then please see the following link:

  • After file encryption in Windows 7, Excel cannot open .xlsx file

I just moved all my files to a new laptop with Windows 7.  I was using Excel 2007 and Windows XP on the OLD laptop.  The NEW laptop has Windows 7 Ultimate and Excel 2010.  I turned on file encryption (via Windows File Explorer) and now I'm
unable to open most Excel files.
The error message says: "Excel cannot open the file 'ABC.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid.  Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
I can open the file just fine if I use the backup version from the old laptop.  It appears that the Windows 7 file encryption damaged the file from Excel's perspective.  No other applications are showing issues and not all .xlsx files are failing.
    Any ideas, please?
    Thanks,
    Ken

This is not a solution but a possible work around to see/salvage the contents of your file. If you have a Google Account
    Go to Google Docs (https://docs.google.com)
    Log in with your credentials
Upload the troublesome files (xlsx, docx etc)
If you are lucky Google may be able to salvage their contents.
Once uploaded, you can always download the file from Google in a variety of formats

is there a way to mark the file read only so keynote will open it like powerpoint does

thanks for the info, but not possible to get the file with the passowrd removed.
I was hoping keynote would be able to still read it like powerpoint is able to but I guess that feature doesn't exist in keynote.
Gues will just have to find a pc with powerpoint then.
