Open network directory

Hi,
I have been stuck for a while and I cannot figure out how to open a directory on the network.
Here are the basics of what my iPad app will do.
Establish a connection with a Mac.
Open a directory on that Mac.
Find pictures (.jpg) in that directory and display it on the iPad.
I can find and establish a connection with the Mac using NSNetServiceBrowser and NSInputStream, but after that, I have no idea how to access any of the directories on the Mac.  I've tried using NSFileHandle, NSURL, etc to try to open the directories, but nothing seems to work.  I've verified that the directory I need to access is Shared on the network because I can access it from the my MacBook Pro.
Can someone please point me in the right direction, or provide sample code?
Thanks so much!
James

Hi Jame, thanks for the input.
No, I am not sure everything is properly configured with OD. This is an update from 10.6.8 server to 10.8 Server. Most things seem to be working - logins, email, calendars, file sharing, web, etc all seem to be going ok - at least for the few accounts that I have tested. I am able to run Workgroup Manager both from the server and from a macine on the same network, and I can lock and unlock the "LDAP Directory" with the administrator accounts - so it all SEEMS to be working fine.
Of course not knowing what is supposed to be happening is hampering my ability to make things happen....
When using Server.app at "Profile Manager" the software does say that Device Management is "Disabled" as I described. When I go to the Device Manager web interface I am able to log in as a system administrator and I can see all the users and groups as expected. When I log in as a non-admin I see a page for "My Devices". I have not set up any device profiles, but it certainly seems like I could.
What should I get if Device Management as "Enabled" rather than "Disabled"? Is OD already doing what it needs to and the "Disabled" indication is just Server.app not recognizing that everything is working?

  • Very slow network directory listing - but fast data transfer speed once listed?

    Hello,
I have really tried to sort this myself before opening up to the community, however I have run out of ideas, and hope someone can offer the magic solution I have missed.
I am currently using the 3.4ghz i7 iMac on a 1GB LAN, running OSX10.7.2 - connecting to a Windows Server 2008 (Running Release 2) over ethernet.
If i go to a network directory that i haven't recently accessed it can take up to 60 seconds to show the contents of that directory. Once i have accessed that folder, if i come out of it and go back in it will be instant again - but the first time it lists the directory it looks like i have opened an empty folder - which after anything from 10seconds to 1 minute will suddenly show the files that are there.
Internet connectivity is fast through the network, and file transfers across the LAN are fast. (showing as approx 300mb per second) I can play and edit HD content across the network with no slowdown so I am confident that this issue is not related to the network speed itself, and is more to do with a setting on this mac.
Symptoms are very similar to this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/12245148?messageID=12245148&amp%3b#1224514 8 - however i understand that in OSX Lion - SMB was removed - so i cannot find this file to edit.
I have tried bypassing additional hubs in the network by wiring direct cables to the switch that is connected to the file server, this made no difference.
I have also tried disconnecting the ethernet cable, and running over wifi. This fixes the listing problem, but when editing HD content over a network drive, this connection is not fast enough to carry the data without interruption (some projects are linked to up to 900gb of hd video content!)
Using ethernet, I have tried DHCP, DHCP with manual address, and manual mode. All reproduce this problem. i have tried using the windows workgroup, and tried without it.
I have also followed this suggestion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2134936?threadID=2134936&tstart=45 and used OpenDNS. this did not fix the issue.
For argument sake, I have also just tested a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard to see if it was OS related. This reproduces the exact same problem, near instant directory listing on the wifi, a long and arduous wait on ethernet.
I cannot work out why directory listing is instant over wifi, but not over ethernet on 2 different macs, running 2 different versions of OSX. I also do not understand why if the network is having trouble listing the directories - the data transfer speed is 300mbps when i copy files across the wired network from the file server to the mac.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to what could be the problem here? We are about to start work on a very large project, where the content we are editing is spread out across around 200 different network folders (different shoots captured over the past 2 years). We really don't have the time to wait 60 seconds each time we need to access one of those directories to look for a file, and I am very close to pulling all my hair out!
I really look forward to hearing from anyone who can offer any insight.

If you are suspecting that the Windows update had something to do with your LAN going slow, then try the following:
    1.  Look for updates for your clients LAN NIC driver; or
    2.  Un-install the updates.

  • Copy any kind of file from content server to network directory

    Helli All
    The question:
I nee to copy any kind of file from content server to any network directory.
    Explanation
    1. transaction CV02N
    2. There is attached file for a document in tab "Document data/Original"
    3. This file stored in content server
    4. I wrote program code that creates path of the stored file that finally looks like
    http://cont:8888/ContentServer.dll?get&Version=.....*...&compid=app1.doc
where app1.doc is file's name and I have to copy this file into network directory.
The problem is that this URL open the file instead of just pointing to him
so that no function or method can't see this file and as the result I got message that
    the file doesn\t exist.
    Please, advice.
    Regards,
    Daniel.

many many thanks for ur help. i really did not check the URLClassLoader properly.
but i would like to hear a little more from u. i have another question. here in this code (provided earlier), i searched for attribute values in the manifest file, then again i load the required class file from the very url. is it not good to retrieve the whole jar file first, and then check attribute values inside manifest file and load the required class files from that jar file that is already downloaded without going to that url again? how can i do this?

  • Not able to open active directory user and computer in windows server 2008r2

    Hi All techies,
i would like to know one issue which i am facing mostly, i have created 5 virtual machine all with window server2008r2 and one windows 7 on vm-ware now when ever i start my virtual machines everything going rite but when i try to open active directory user/
computer or domain and trust i get a following error "data from active directory user and computers is not available from dc(null) bcoz unspecified error" even when i chk in events log its give me no help, and after 15-30 min everything works good
Please let me know the cause of it and really appreciate it .
    Thanks

    You need to ensure that
    1. group policy that says "wait for network before logon" is applied to all computers including servers and workstations is applied
    2. DNS record exists for all DCs in DNS
    3. If there are multiple Domain Controllers in Forests, then they point them as secondary DNS server. This way they will be able to resolve IPs if local DNS server service takes time to start.
As Chris mentioned, you need to start all DCs first, give a time of 5 minutes and then start member servers and workstations for successful logon.

  • Server 2008 R2 DNS Server can not open active directory erro 4000

The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory.  This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it.  Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly
and reload the zone. The event data is the error code. Error 4000
This just started happening yesterday. Also File service and print server is unable to contact because of this error. I have no lookup zones. When I try and go to the DNS server I get a message The server VETSALDC could be contacted The error was Access
Denied. Would you like to add it anyway?
    PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that DNS unable to open Active Directory with error 4000.
This happens when that particular DC/DNS server has lost its Secure channel with itself or PDC. This can also happen in a single DC environment where that DC/DNS server holds all the FSMO roles and is pointing to itself as Primary DNS server.
You may check AD DS using command line “DCdiag” (run as administrator). besides, you may try to stop and restart AD DS service(detailed steps reference the link:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732714(WS.10).aspx ), make sure that the AD DS is running correctly.
Then restart the DNS service, detailed steps reference the link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc735673(v=ws.10).aspx .
If the problem still exits, is there any other DC or DNS on your network? Post the TCP/IP parameters (ipconfig /all) of DC and DNS here.

  • Transferring files stored in a network directory to SAP.

    hi Guys,
my requirement is this is  an inbound interface, transferring PDF files stored in a network directory to SAP and web direcotry.
i think this is something releated to system call, can some one give me some idea on it or from soemwhere i could find some doc on this or any FM to do this.....
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards.

    Hi Pawan,
I'm not sure at this stage how this can be done if you don't have a user with a SAPGui at least for the first step.
If you do, you could do it like this:
    - User enters path as a parameter to abap program
    - Program calls method DIRECTORY_LIST_FILES of class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES
    - Program calls method GUI_UPLOAD of class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES to read files one by one
    - Program uses open dataset, transfer and close dataset to write the files to the application server
    - Program calls method FILE_DELETE of class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES to delete the files one by one from the directory.
This, however, will only work if you have a dialog session and the user has access to the network directories in question.
If you are running SAP on NT, and you have directories on this server mapped to PC drives, you could also use the FILE_COPY method rather than using open dataset, transfer, etc.
If you MUST run this stuff as background jobs, I'm not sure that I can help much.
    Cheers,
    Brad

  • Lion Server problem - Computer is already a network directory server

So I purchased Lion Server to trial it at home and it is not going well. Initially I was having issues connecting to the web interfaces for profile manager, etc. The server was not responding and so I uninstalled server and reinstalled it from the Mac Store (FYI: Apple has charged me for the OS and the server app as a result of this for some reason!!!)
With Server reinstalled I went to set up the server as a network directory and am shown this message every time I try to set up the directory admin account: "Computer is already a network directory server - This computer is already configured to manage network accounts. It cannot be configured again."
This leaves me unable to set up any profile or device management, I have tried the following solutions:
    Uninstall and reinstall server
    Deleted ServerVersion plist
    Reinstalled Lion
Reinstalled Lion with format of HDD (although I did recover from a Time Machine Backup which included settings)
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to connect my iMac G4 to my network, it wont let me something about the password but I connect to a open network???Ask your question.

Hello I have been trying to connect my iMac G4 to my network but I can't. I have a secure network with a password and is not let me in but I can connect to an open network with no password??? anybody can help???

AirPort card in iMac G4 does not support strong WiFi encryption.
I think WPA is the maximum for that WiFi card.
If you have WPA2 in your WiFi network, you need to downgrade (not recommended)or wired connect the iMac G4.

  • TS1317 I can't connect to my network, but can to an open network in the community.  I think it's the password, I've forgotten it.  How do I set a new password?

My ISP has just installed a new modem with an ethernet connection, which I have plugged into my Airport Express.  I'm able to connect to an open network in the neighborhood but not to my own network that I had set up before.  I have done some troubleshooting, the modem is working when connected to my computer.  It may just be the password, it's not accepting the password that I thought I had used to set up the Airport Express when I first bought it.  Should I be using the same password as in my Accounts on my Mac's System Preferences?

...  Would the network password be the same as my Mac's password?
It can be if you configured it that way, but since that is apparently not working for you it's probably not the same. You can reconfigure the Express easily enough using AirPort Utility - it is in your Utilities folder, which is found within your Applications folder.
Launch AirPort utility, then reset the Express:
    To reset your Express:
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil for 1 full second. The light (LED) will flash amber, indicating that the AirPort Express is in soft reset mode.
This will enable you to use AirPort Utility to reset your network password.
Note: If you do not make your changes within five minutes of pressing the reset button, AirPort Express will return to its previous configuration. The light will change back to solid green (or whatever state it was in before the reset).

  • Unable to open Network System Preferences

When I want to open Network System Preferences I get the message "Your network settings have been changed by another application". When I click "OK" the message keeps reappearing. The only way out is a Force Quit of System Preferences. What does this message mean and what can be done about it?
Maybe it's worth mentioning that I had to reinstall Mac OS a few days ago due to a screwed up security update. Could it have something to do with that? Apart from this my iBook works fine and I have no networking problems.
    Thanks for any helpful advice.

    Hi John
That didn't work but thanks anyway.
In the meantime I found another topic under "Mac OS X Tiger" that I had overlooked before dealing with this problem. It obviously has to do with the latest security update.

  • Which shortcut key to open a directory or file in Finder?

I found that when I highlight a directory or file and then click "Enter", it actually highlight the file name and then allow me to rename the file.
In XP, it is a normal way to open a directory and file. So I guess there should be a different way to do so in Mac.
Instead of double click the directory or file, is there any shortcut key in Mac to achieve so?
    boycemac

Depending on how you are viewing things in Finder, just
clicking on a directory will open it. I tend to use the "paned"
view and this is how it works.
If you are using a "list" view, then double clicking does the
job. Are you looking for a short-cut to use instead of the
double click? Command-O "opens" things but I must confess
I have never used it on a directory.

I'm using an airport extreme as an access point with two windows computers.  I set up only one network and made it secure.  But windows is listing a second network, which is not secured, called Apple Network x2c986 (characters changed for security purposes). This open network is not listed in the airport utility. I'd like to know what it is and how to secure it.
My network is physically configured like this:
cable modem <-> apple airport extreme (ethernet).
    AAE <-> WinXP laptop (ethernet)
AAE <->WinXP laptop <-> Windows 7 laptop (wireless)
The secure network has wpa2-personal security, aes encryption and a security key. The Apple network has none of these. I can apply wpa2-personal security, aes encryption and the security key in the Windows securitiy properties window, but  what am I securing and can doing so mess up my network?
    Thanks for any help.

This is one of two things:
    1) Another user near you has an Apple device that they have not set up yet. Normally, you would "see" the device in AirPort Utility if you connect to the network.  Is that the case? Can you connect to this network?  If yes, best to leave well enough alone. Someone is foolish enough to leave their network open and use default names for their network.
    2) Apple routers use the Apple Network xxxxxx network name to set up the device using wireless. This might have been your AirPort device and the computer is "remembering" the old previous connection. If you try to connect to the this network, but nothing happens, then this is the default network that your device produced before you configured it.
