Open new apps in background

is there a way to open new apps in the background?
right now, when opening a new application, the system will automatically switch to the new app once it is loaded.
i.e. i am woking on a word document, and while typing, i start excel from the dock.
excel will take 30+ second to load/start.
in the meantime i am still using word.
after 30 sec, excel loads and automatically switch from word to excel even if i am in the middle of typing.
is there any way to prevent the auto switch and load the new app in the background?

There is a way ...
1. Create your script in Apple Script Editor:
do shell script "open -g \"/Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Excel.app\" "
tell me to quit
2. Then, in Apple Script Editor, select File -> Export
In the Export dialog window, name your application and select File Format: Application
Finally, click "Save"
3. You now have an .app file you can double-click to run your app in background.
Drag & drop this app to your dock to create an alias
You now have a dock item you can click to start your app in background.
To make it perfect, you can even copy / paste the app icon and paste it to your newly created app before dragging it to your Dock:
- select your original app in Finder
- get info (Command + I)
- click once on the app icon in the "get Info" window
- copy it (Command + C)
- then select your newly created app in Finder
- get info (Command + I)
- click once on the app icon in the "get Info" window
- paste (Command + V)
This way, you have an alias to your script-app in the Dock, showing the original app icon (Excel in my example)
Have fun

  • Hi, when setting Safari, what is the meaning of "Open New Tabs in Background"? Thank you.

hi, when setting Safari, what is the meaning of "Open New Tabs in Background"? Thank you.

Previously, whenever you wanted to open a new browser window in mobile Safari, or whenever you tapped a link from within another app, Safari created a new page.
But in IOS 5 things have changed, you now have 'open new tabs in background, a great feature.
On any browser window that you have selected in Safari or any linked windows, you open Safari on iPad/iTouch or iPhone you have tabbed browser windows and can go to any of the sites without having to open up a new safari window.
    It saves you time.

  • Safari setting on iPad "Open New Tabs in Background" is not working

A couple of weeks ago, I decided that I wanted to see the tab bar in Safari, on my iPad, just like on my MacBook.
    So, I went to...
    Settings >> Safari
...and I turned OFF the setting "Open New Tabs in Background".
Then, the tab bar appeared and every new page that I opened displayed across the tab bar in a new tab, just like I wanted.
Today, I devised that I liked the pages in the background a lot better and I changed the setting to ON.
PROBLEM: the Tab Bar remains, no matter how many pages are open.
What's worse is that, in the menu bar, next to the bookmark and box-arrow icon, the numbered icon is missing (the icon that displays the number of the pages that you have open).
How do I get that icon back and the Tab Bar to disappear?

    Looks like some confusion here.
Safari on an iPad running iOS 6 as your signature implies does not open separate pages and the box with the number of open pages is not there. This was how Safari on an iPad worked in an earlier version of the iOS but safari presently only supports tabs.
When you select to turn on Open Pages in the Background, select a link and opening it in a new page will create a new tab and the link will load there BUT Safari on your iPad will remain on the original page. You'll need to tap the ba to see the new page. Turning off Open Pages in the Background will let Safari switch to the new tab immediately.
An iPhone, however, retains the old feature of separate windows and there is a box with a number at the bottom of the screen letting your know how many windows you have open.

  • Open new tabs in background

Hi, I set the Safari "Open New Tabs in Background" on or off, and didn't find anything changed for browsing, why?

Yes it does change. It may not look like it.
The new tab opens in the foreground if you turn off open in background. When the tab opens in the background, you have to tap on that tab to view it. If it opens in the foreground, it opens so you can read it without tapping it.

  • No "open" box since upgrading to iOS 7 on iPad 2 , how do I open new app or update?

I Cannot figure out how to open new apps or update apps since downloading newest software, there is no "open" box like there was before, please help, I'm stuck!

You don't have to open apps from the iTunes Store. After downloading, exit the store to your home screen. Simply tap on the app's icon to open & run the app.

  • Can not open new apps downloaded on my iphone, can not open new apps downloaded on my iphone

i have downloaded new apps fr apple store. after syncing it with my iphone, all new apps downloaded can not be open.. help

Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from this site.
Create a user profile that accurately reflects the type of hardware you're using and your version of OS X, or include that information in your first message.
Give details of the problem. A remark such as "X doesn't work" conveys no useful information. If X did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I expected B; but I got C." Include the complete, verbatim text of any error messages you saw, and specify where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever.
Also describe the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any pertinent information, but it didn't help, give details.

  • When right clicking to open link in new window (not tab) foxfire immediately switches windows rather than opening new window in background

Just updated to foxfire 15.0, and now each time I open a link in a new window foxfire will switch immediately to that newly opened window rather than opening the new window in the background as it did before I updated to 15.0. I am aware of the option to check or uncheck switching to new tabs immediately, but I am speaking of opening a link in a new window, not tab. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:

  • Opening new tabs in background..

I've been using Firefox for a long time, and Firefox for Android for a while too. I loved tabs, it is one of my favorite features in Firefox.
Ever since I bought my tablet, I've used Firefox. I often will click on a link to open it into a new tab. These tabs are then opened in the background, and I work through them one-by-one basis.
Today, however, it stopped working that way. If I click on a link and open it in a new tab, it automatically brings that page to the front, not in the background like I want it to.
I've searched the settings, Mozilla's faqs, and other forums, but no one seems to be having a simular problem. I know I didn't change anything in the settings to cause this.
Any advice as to help me get new tabs to open in the background again would be great.
    Thanks so much!

    Glad you fixed it Mousekitty!

Ever since I upgraded my iPhone 4 to Version 5, all the new apps that I try to download keeps saying "waiting" on my phone... It won't open or download! Only the old apps that I already had before I upgraded my phone works. Please help!!!

    Try resetting the iPhone.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    It won't open or download!
If that doesn't help tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

I have recently updated the new apps via creative cloud now photoshop and bridge no longer work, they open then say they have encountered a problem and close, I also tried opening the old version of photo shop but getting the same result

What OS version? What's the exact error? Exactly when does the error occur? What previous versions? What is on the screen when the error displays? Does Photoshop get fully open?
Try opening Photoshop holding down Shift key immediately to turn off plug-ins. Lots of good suggestions here: Photoshop: Basic Troubleshooting steps to fix most issues

  • Itunes won;t open and can't download new apps

    Hi guys,
I've got a huge problem and I hope I can solve it here. I ve got an ipod touch for smth like 2 months and all of sudden, when i connect it to the PC , itunes isn't starting automatically and i have to do it manually, even though until now it did open automatically. Also, a bigger problem is that I can't download new apps and i can;t update the ones i already have... when i try to do it, it just shows the sign of "waiting" and it frozes like this, so i can't use the app anymore... i tried to reset all settings, to reset the network settings, i searched for a lot of answers on the internet, but my problem wasn;t solved. So, if u can please tell me what should I do, considering that i haven;t tried to erase all content and settings and also my itunes is up to date. If i missed a detail you want to know, let me know, i ll answer, but i hope i wrote everything thatwould be useful in giving me an answer. Thank you!!

I had a similar problem and ran across this old post from ilounge. I am running Win 7 and lost my playlists to the new upgrade. Then my old ipod died before I could hook it up. When I followed this insruction it restored all my songs and playlists (so there was duplication but I got everything back). Might work for you.

I'm running windows XP and seem to have found a partial solution that does not involve vague half assed directions =P
Open iTunes, go to file, import, and select the latest "Temp" file, I got most of my playlists and songs back that way.
Edit: This file is in the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes folder
