Open Reader at a specific bookmark
I am trying to figure out a way to open the adobe reader at a specific bookmark. I found that it is possible to open to a specific page:
/A page=10
and to a named destination:
/A nameddest=Some destination
Is there a command line argument to open reader at a specific bookmark?
Thanks.
I don't understand why you say it makes no sense. Why would you not want to
mark where you stopped reading in a PDF file so you can close it and, later,
open it again to where you left off so you don't have to spend time figuring
out where you were? This is kind of basic for reading books.
I suppose if you only read short PDF's or just glance through them then it
would make no sense. But when you're doing research and going back and forth
between several PDF files, it makes a lot of sense.
Page numbers have to be jotted down somewhere or remembered. It would be
much handier to put the cursor on the spot you stopped reading and click on
a button such as "Bookmark" or "Stopped Reading Here."
I found no mention of "named destinations" in the Reader 8 help file, or am
I being too literal? Is it called something else? Are these named
destinations configurable by the end user or only the person who creates the
file? If the end user, are they saved when the file is closed? In other
words, can I, as the end user, mark my own persistent named destinations?

Jump to a specific bookmark using JavaScript
Hello,
I am able to successfully jump to a specific bookmark in a PDF document when I run the following code in the Debugging Console:
// Jump to "Monthly Summary"
for (var i=0; i<this.bookmarkRoot.children.length; i++) {
if (this.bookmarkRoot.children[i].name.indexOf("Monthly Summary")!=-1) {
this.bookmarkRoot.children[i].execute();
The problem is that I would like to be able to run this code in a folder level JavaScript file ,however, the above code does not work for me.
What must I change to make this code work in an external JavaScript file?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
LindaSince a bookmark only exist as an object in a PDF file how can it work as written as a folder level script without any control. All folder level scripts are run when the Acrobat/Reader application is started and possibly before any PDF file is opened. So your code will run but not find any bookmarks.
Have you tired to run this code when there is no open PDF file?
I get the following error when there is no open PDF:
this.bookmarkRoot is undefined
3:Console:Exec
TypeError: this.bookmarkRoot is undefined
3:Console:Exec
undefined
The "undefined" means there is no bookmarkRoot defined or found. Note bookmarks only exist within a PDF file that have bookmarks.
Next, once you get a PDF open, how are you going to get this code to run for the form when there is no way to identify the block of code to run?
As George has suggested you need to create/define a function and then call that defined function form within the PDF. Once a function is defined, that function can be called by the name of the function as part of the document level function for a PDF form, or as a field or bookmark action.
Since you have decided to place this code in the user's Acrobat JavaScript folder, how are other users going to call this code located on your system. Using your approach will require all users need to install your code on their system. If you were to put the code in the PDF as a document level script, the script it could execute upon opening the PDF. If one put it in as a document level function, then it could be called upon opening the PDF, as a bookmark, as a button, etc.
I would look for a function to open any bookmark in the PDF by bookmark name by searching for the existence of that named bookmark. With this approach, I could use the function in any PDF and execute any possible bookmark as needed. -
I'm sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology. When I open a new window or a link I want it to open a whole new window so I have 500 open FireFox tabs in my taskbar if I open that many windows. I do not like having everything open in one window. Used to be I could find how to undo that but you changed everything on me and now only rocket scientists can use your application. If Chrome and Internet Explorer weren't so ridiculous, I would change. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
This didn't help me at all. I want a separate window to open each time I open a new tab or bookmark. Currently when I open a new link it just adds a tab to the window already open so from my non-technie point of view, I only have one window open and have to go up top to see what is open vs. being able to look below in my taskbar and see what I have open.

On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point in a document, and then continue on to the next paragraph and so on? Thank you. Ed
Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5. The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over. This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1: Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L. This will jump you up to the address bar. Start typing where you want to go. i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
Step 2: Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website. You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it. If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website. This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'. You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3. Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note: If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip: You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'. The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R. You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar. To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac. This will open up another window. Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'. If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

The 'Commands Help' Voiceover Menu. Control-Option-H-H. (hit H twice) is my best friend. It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command. Example: You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command. Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph. It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph. I believe there are three.
As from the Trackpad Commands, I've copied and pasted below from Appendix A: Commands and Gestures
VoiceOver standard gestures
If you’re using a Multi-Touch trackpad, you can use VoiceOver gestures. VoiceOver provides a set of standard gestures for navigating and interacting with items on the screen. You can’t modify this set of gestures.

Open files from a specific directory
Dear all,
I have the following source code that simply selects files from a directory.
private void openFile()

fileChooser.setFileSelectionMode(
JFileChooser.FILES_ONLY );
int result = fileChooser.showOpenDialog( this );
// user clicked Cancel button on dialog

File filename = fileChooser.getSelectedFile();
if (filename == null || filename.getName().equals( "" ))
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog( this,
"Invalid File Name",
"Invalid File Name", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE );
else
// open the file
try
// Open an input stream
FileInputStream fin1 = new FileInputStream(filename);
// Read and print a line of text
BufferedReader d1 = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fin1));
abs = d1.readLine();
outputArea1.setText("");
outputArea1.append(abs + "\n\n");
outputArea1.setCaretPosition(0);
// Close our input and output stream
fin1.close();
catch (IOException e5) {
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, "Error Opening File", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
} // end catch
} // end else
} // end private
My question is: Can I force it to open files from a specific directory, and NOT from MyDocuments directory????
thanks,

\n = linefeed
\j = illegal escape character
JFileChooser fileChooser = new JFileChooser("C:\j2sdk1.4.2\bin");

Reader X: DDE Open command can open Reader but not open a specified target PDF
Once again Adobe has issued an update which breaks existing business systems. After the fiasco of Reader 9.3.4 failing to open external files such as SWF or XLS, the new Reader X is not opening the requested PDF when called via DDE.
The Reader X always opens with a "What do you want to do?" panel, offering various manually selected actions. What is required is for the Reader to open the PDF file specified in the DDE call, as it has done in all previous versions.
Is there a fix for this, or an alternative calling mechanism?
We have an external application which allows students to navigate around the various modules and lessons within their course. When they select a lesson, a DDE call is raised to request the appropriate lesson PDF to open in Reader. The external program uses a small floating, semi-transparent form, which allows easy lesson selection, automatic bookmarking and other functions. This functionality could not be achieved with simple PDF full of hyperlinks to the lessons.
The further problem is that many hundreds of these various courses are already in use by students around the world. We cannot easily prevent them from accepting upgrades to Reader X, nor supply them all with an alternative control method. All we can do is suggest anyone experiencing this problem to dump the new version and download version 9.4
Has anyone any ideas to fix the broken functionality in Reader X, or a satisfactory way to work around this failure ?
Thanks

[signature deleted by host]Thanks for your contribution Dave.
The DDE call should not be case sensitive. Various writings on this page quote Acroview and AcroView, but I have tried various combinations and results are the same whatever case is used. It is acroviewR10 which I have used with success in my updated calls.
ManishPali has not responded to my question of where he found these R10 and A10 settings, but if these were intended to be the only access, they can give rise to even more scope for program failure. The majority of users will have only the free Reader, but some may have the full Acrobat program, and not Reader. So when we use 'acroviewR10' in our call, anyone with only Acrobat will again find the program failing.
Also of note is that using 'acroview' works in a call to open Reader X, but will not work to close Reader X or to open a PDF within Reader X. Why is one service still recognising the plain acroview, but the other services require the R10 suffix?
Dave says that this should be fixed in version 10.0.1, but is this just a hope, or a statement of intent from someone involved with Reader development? If this is fixed, how long will it take for that next release to be in common circulation?
In the meantime, we are preparing patches to send to any students who experience this problem, and also upgrading the master CD for each Course to add an option to the Config menu, allowing the user to select Reader X or not.
I think the developers at Adobe believe every user is within a corporation with centralised IT control, so everyone has the same, known version of any software and can be given new versions or advised of issues at will. In the real world, there are millions of independent users scattered across the globe who have no IT support and often have limited knowledge. For example, it is not uncommon to ask a user which version of Windows they are running and be quoted their MS Office version instead. Any extra complication in setting up or using their new software is a significant problem likely to result in lengthy support calls, and a loss of confidence in the product.

Will Acrobat Reader recognize an HTML bookmark as a named destination?
I have a Word file with bookmarks. I make a PDF from this file. How do I code an HTML link in a different file that will open the PDF at the location of a bookmark.
I asked a similar but maybe less precise question yesterday. The response I received had links to articles that described how to use a named destination. One article said a plugin was needed. The article was for Acrobat 7. I cannot assume readers will have the plugin. An article also described some steps to go through probably with Acrobat to identify the named destinations. This set of steps is not a direction I want to go either. I don't want to identify bookmarks everytime I reprint the file. Maybe the question I am asking is "will Acrobat Reader recognize an HTML bookmark as a named destination?"
The response I received yesterday included the following:
You can possibly use "Named destination" instead of bookmarks.
To create them: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/X/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd6 15109794195ff-7ca7.w.html
To link to them: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/link-html-pdf-page-acrobat.html
In my HTML file is the following:
<a href="LinkTestDestinationFile.pdf#nameddest=RevisionHistory">Revision History</a>
RevisionHistory is a bookmark I made in my Word file. The bookmark marks the section Revision History. The link above does not open LinkTestDestinationFile.pdf at the Revision History section. I do not have the plugin suggested in one of the articles mentioned above.With Adobe Acrobat you can create named destinations.
Bookmarks and named destinations are not the same. -

I cannot place saved urls in specific bookmarks folders
I used to be able to place saved urls in specific bookmarks folders,using the small radio button on the right of save bookmarks.It doesn't work now that I installed pclos(linux) 2010,which has the latest Firefox . I can save the url at the bookmarks menu bottom,then I have to drag and drop them in the folder.
Hmm, I am also having problems expanding folders in the Edit Bookmark dialog. I get an error in "Tools -> Error Console":

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. On my system I see the problem in the latest trunk nightly build, but not in Firefox 3.6.3. It seems like it might be related to the "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" extension, which is the only add-on I have installed. (The problem went away when I tried disabling the add-on.) I'll experiment some more and then file a bug if there isn't one already... -
How do I delete specific bookmarks and bookmark folders?
There does not seem to be an "Edit" button provided to delete specific bookmark folders such as "News" which contain bookmarks that are not desired or are redundant.
Sorry, Firefox Home for iPhone is only able to display bookmarks synced from your comptuer; it cannot edit them. If you edit or rearrange bookmarks on your computer, the changes will sync to your iPhone.

HT4059 I use the bookmark option and after I close the iPad it opens up on the first bookmark I used
I read on my iBook, I mark a bookmark, when I close my iPad, after I come back, it opens up at my first bookmark I used.
I'm not sure if I am having the same problem or just a similar problem. Lately when I open a book in iBooks it automatically opens not to the page where the bookmark is, but so e earlier page. Not certain if it is opening to a random page or a previously bookmarked page.
It happens on my iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1. In Settings sync Bookmarks is set to "on" and I use iCloud to sync devices as well as plugging in to iTunes on my Mac almost daily to make back ups. I don't tend to open iBooks on my iPhone 4S, but it is set to sync anyway. -
The way to open 3D pdf with specific model selection from url link
I guess this feature is not supported, but let me ask one thing.
I am looking for the way to open 3D pdf with specific model selection from url link.
For example, if the following link is opened, is it possoble to open 3d.pdf with automatic selection of "abc" model in the model tree?
http://example.org/3d.pdf#model=abc
If it can be done by javascript, it's really helpful.Impossible. There are only very limited command-line options for the Acrobat Family and you cannot change them.

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
