Open sub VI front panel in a tab-- Possible?

Well, the question is basically in the subject: Is it possible to call sub VI's and display their front panel in a tab. I do NOT wish to have the front panel in a new window when called.

The answer is also basically in the picture:
You can find SubPanel element in the same palette as the Tab Control container. Place a SubPanel on the Tab Control and wire a reference of the VI whose front panel you want to display.

While evaluating my code please have in mind that I am a LV novice. Therefore sometimes my code might violate some coding rules that I have to learn about myself. But how else could I do that...

  • Sub vi front panel opens when main vi opens

When I open my main vi I have one of my sub vi front panels that opens.  I looked in the properties for the sub vi and Show front panel when loaded is NOT checked. Is there something else I need to look at?

    please clarify;
    Q1)
    The sub-VI FP opens when
You open the top VI but BEFORE you run it
    OR
The sub-VI FP opens after you start the top level VI
    Q2)
If the above Q was after you run....
Is the sub-VI running or paused when it opens?
If it is puased you may have a breakpoint set in it.

  • LV 8.5 opens all sub-VI front panels

    Hello,
Recently I again saw a strange occurrance that has happened to me about 10-12 times over the past year. Here specifically I am using LV 8.5 with the cRIO and FPGA module. When I was running a new RT VI from the developer environment, (deploying to the cRIO) the result looked something like this:
All the sub-VI front panels are opened, and shown in their reserved or running state.
None of these VIs are set to show front panel when called or opened, but all are sub-VIs of the top level VI within the project. It seems to have replicated a "Find all VIs in memory, within the project" and then "Show front panel" Invoke. The troubling thing is that this is not really repeatable, when I have closed all the VIs and run the VI again, it is fine. I have seen the same behavior in LV 8.2, 8.21 as well as when deploying to cFP-2120 or when on a Host computer.
Has anyone else seen this or are there any ideas of what is going on?
    Thanks,
    Mello

Well now that I have seen to image, I recall having seen this myself.
Like you, it was when I was deploying to an RT target and I was not able to recreate this behaviour.
It was either an 8.0 or a 8.2 app.
So all I can do is confirm that you are not alone, but can not offer a solution.

    Expanding and clarifying what BJD said;
After you create the temporary sub-VI that BJD mentioned, open its front panel and copy the reference control that LV created when it created the sub-VI.
This reference control will be correct class etc that you need. Use the control to replace the original control that you were attempting to wire up.
The technique of "create sub-VI...copy" always works for me.
There is one more thing that you should watch out for.
The mechanical action of the boolean can not be set for latch action when attempting to read the value using a value property node.

  • How do I programatically open a LabView Front panel?

I want to use a test stand variable (perhaps a sequence global) to control whether certain VIs open their front panels, and wait for subsequent operator interaction. Can I get there using the API and something like this:  "Step_TSInfoProp.TSInfo_StepAdditions.LVStep_ModulePathProp" ?
I tried passing a boolean to the VI and then having it optionally open its own front panel using the VI Server, but I could not see it because it would always be behind the TestStand Window.

Sean,  The reason for doing this is that the client wants a "debug level" control of some sort. If set below some value, the VIs just do their thing, take their measurements, report, or whatever and go on their way blindly as what we expect a good test sequence to do. However when this value is set above some level (the threshold may be different for various categories of tests) the VI becomes interactive. This would allow an operator to see a measured value, and possibly tinker with the instrument parameters or the UUT, before continuing on. This might be similar to a single step command, but not necessarily pausing at every step. Inside of the VI I can test the value of the variable (either passed in through the connector pane or via the sequence context) and thus decide whether to be interactive or silent. I can also use the VI server to open my front panel or not.  But in doing so, even though I try to make the VI panel frontmost, it is hidden by Teststand. If the VI attribute is "dialog" then it does show up on top of everything else, but unfortunately does so even when I don't tell it to open at all.

Or have you thought about using a tab control? You can organize controls in pages and have those controls call sub-VIs with or without displaying the front panel of the sub-VI. See the Tab Control Properties.vi example that ships with LabVIEW.
From any LabVIEW window, select Help from the window menubar, then Find Examples >> Search, then enter "tab control" (without the quotes) in the box labeled Type a keyword to find:

  • Opening multiple sub VIs (front panels) in an application

    Hi,
I am working on a small process control application. The main VI represents a layout of various equipment (pumps, valves, heat exchangers). Each TYPE of equipment
can be turned on/off through a particular subVI. The subVI is displayed when the operator clicks on the component.  At the moment only one subVI front panel can be loaded. I would like to have multiple panels open at the same time; this to include multiple instances of a same VI and different subVIs.
I have tried to set properties in the WindowsApperance dialog box but cannot acheive the desired operation.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Trust my personal experience: You do NOT want multiple dialog windows open.  The users will hate you and curse your name if you do.  You really want to use subpanels and limit what the user can do.  Subpanels are a way of inserting a VI's front panel into another VI's front panel.  So you want to have a section of your main front panel that the user can load whatever control subVI they need.

  • Open and Close Front Panel of SubVI

    Hi all,
Running LabVIEW 2011 on Windows 7 x64.  I am trying to get a subVI front panel to open from my main FP with the press of a button and then close with a button press in the subVI.  Here is the piece from my main FP that calls the VI and opens the FP
Plots is defined in another loop and all of the loops are in a flat sequence.  I did it this way because I want it to start with the first press and not stop my main loop from running.  I have moved the item in the left loop around a lot so I'm not sure if I can run that in the same loop as the event or not.  Either way opening the VI seems to work fine.
The problem shows up when trying to close the subVI for the SECOND time.  The code is here:
As I said, the first time I open and close the VI everything works as I expect it should.  I am then able to open it again but now the "blank button" doesn't function and I can't close the window or even open the block diagram to probe anything.  I have been trying to figure this out for awhile, any insite would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Open VI's front panel

    Hi,
    See the included file 'Printing.bmp'.
I am printing a VI's front panel, but before printing I want to open another VI's front panel that is showing the message 'Printing...'(P'ting). This VI's front panel should be closed after printing. But the front panel of P'ting.vi could not be drawn completely within the printing time. I just can see the borders of the VI. How can I solve this?

Sorry I did not see the picture...
I don't know what your CPU is like, but the time LV needs to send the printing commands is very small.
When using a pause, use a sequence to be sure that the pause starts before the printing.

  • Have a program in which a sub vi front panel pops up when the main vi is loaded

    I have a strange problem.
This problem only occures after building an application using LV 8.6 Professional version Application Builder, and I have installed it onto the target computer. It doesn't happen when running the development system.
When I load the program on the target computer, one of the subvi's front panels used in the application appears on top of the main vi's front panel.
This subvi should never appear on the front panel at any time during the program exicution.
It happens to be the Write to Spreadsheet.vi that is part of the standard vi library.
I have checked all calls to this subvi to verify that it has not be modified to make it load or appear when the main vi is loaded.
It is called at 4 different times during the program exicution but in no instance is it set to show the front panel.
Has anyone seen this and if so what was the fix?
    Solved!

Does the exe file run on your development computer without the popup?
Can you post a VI that demonstrates this behavior?
You've probably already checked, but there are two places that need setting, the SubVI Node Setup, and the File Proeprties Execution tab. See attached jpegs.

  • Programmatically Open a Remote Front Panel with Panel Open Method

    Hi,
I am trying to open the front panel of the VI on my cRIO-9024 through a remote computer. Currently, I am able to run the VI with no problems with the RUN VI method; however, when I try to open the front panel, I receive "Error 1043 - This property or method is not supported in this version of LabVIEW" or the Front Panel is simply not visible. My cRIO is configured to allow TCP/IP protocol, The VI is visible, and I have made my project into a source distribution on my cRIO.
Any help or suggestions regarding this problem would be great. I am very new to LabVIEW.
I have attached a screenshot of my block diagram and project.

  • Enabling / Disabling graphs and opening a new Front Panel Window

    Hi,
I have a simple application of showing 12 analog signals on 12 different graphs placed vertically in aligned position. I have to develop a user interface so that if user wants to display signal no. 1, 4 and 6 out of total 12 signals, he should make selection using check boxes and click a re-draw button. It should result in opening a separate window with these three signals displayed as separate graphs aligned vertically and adjusted to fit window size. Similarly later user can change his selection of displaying signals (from same acquired data) say 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 & 12 and click Redraw button. It should result in opening a new Window showing all these signals as separate graphs which are aligned vertically and resized to fit the window. Now I have two major issues in this context.
    1) I have been searching LabView help to locate a way to open a new window for this purpose but I failed to locate any way for it. As per my limited knowledge, it seems that we cannot have multiple "Front Panel" windows in Labview.
    2) For the graph I could not locate a control to enable/disable a graph so that it appears or vanishes. Is there any way to achieve it?
I shall appreciate your valuable advice. I shifted from "Lab View Signal Express"  to "Lab View" in order to achieve this user interface design but I am still not successful in finding a good solution for this application.
    Regards
    Mnuet

    Hi Mnuet,
You can do what was said above. Here is a KB on dynamically loading VIs. It looks something like this.
Dynamically loaded VIs are loaded at the point in code while running, as opposed to being loaded when the parent VI is loaded into memory like normal subVIs. You can make a reference to them and then control the front panel appearance, their run status, etc with property nodes and invoke nodes.

  • Position Sub VI front panel

Is there an easy way of positioning the Front panel of a sub VI on a coordinate point of the calling VI?

I just found the SnapToPanel utility on the community.
    Description
The SnapToPanel VI enables you to position a Target VI window relative to a Reference VI window.
Use the SnapToPanel VI in your application to control the position of sub-panels relative to the main application panel.

If you are using LabVIEW 5.1, you can use the VI server attributes to hide
the VI by moving it off of the desktop. I will send you a sample in private
    mail.
The attribute (property) you need to use is Front Panel Window -> Window
    Bounds.
Set it to something that is larger than your window size, like 2000, 2000,
    2200, 2200.
    I hope that this helps,
