"open with" duplicate entries

"at times" using "open with" shows many duplicate entries....reboot fixes it for a while..
I'm still trying to determine what is triggering this.
Any idea? Anyone see this in 10.8? I couldn't find anything searching the forums.

I am not familiar with all the causes of this phenomenon, but it happens to me from time to time, and I know why it is for me. I work with "clone" images all the time with dev work. When a clone is mounted alongside booting into  the main volume, Launch Services, which keeps track of applications used to open certain file types, "sees" the other application files on the mounted clone volume, and adds them to the database, resulting in the apparent duplication of "open with" entries.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onyx.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using Terminal.
Using Terminal to Rebuild the Launch Services Database:
Launch Terminal, located at /Applications/ Utilities/.
For OS X 10.5.x and later, enter the following at the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I don't know wjhy it is happening for you, but rebuilding the database will at least reset things to normal. The question to ask is whether you have other mounted volumes, say from other systems on your network, that contain Mac Apps.
I have also found a way to keep it from happening (in certain cases, for my dev work). When I create a clone, I also create what is called a "fstab" file entry, in the fstab file. This entry prevents named drives from auto-mounting. So, if I boot to a clone, my main volume on my internal SSD won't mount. Hence, no extraneous Launch Services database entries will created on the clone drive. If however, I boot to my main SSD, and then mount a clone, I don't use any fstab entries on the main SSD. This just means I have to periodically rebuild the Launch Services database. It is way too much trouble keeping fstab entries for all my clone drives on my main SSD. I only use the fstab method on the clones themselves.

Hi guys~ I updated to Mavericks just a few days and I'm enperiencing the same duplicate-entries problem (multiple MPlayerXs) in "open with" as that on previous OS X versions. Unfortunately the Termial method didn't work this time as "No such directory exists" poped up in Termial when I tried. Can you help me?

  • Problem with duplicate entries in a structure.

    Hi,
I am creating a custom structure by including 2 structures in it as DRSEG and COBL_MRM_D.
Now both the structures have many common fields and hence it gives an error on check.
Is there any workaround to create the structure in DDIC by including both the above structures.
    Pls help with your ideas.
    Thanks,
    stock.

    Hi
Create a DDIC structure which has all the common fields. Include this structure only once .
Then include the fields which are not common from both the structure into the created structure . so that no duplicates entries are present
    OR
Include the first structure then dont include the second structure include only the fields which are not common to both . this also eliminates the duplicates

  • Open With Duplicate , again.

    dear all,
i downloaded paintbrush twice. i thought i had uninstalled or deleted the first download (threw it into trash after quitting the programme) but apparently not. i think this is what resulted in the duplicate "open with" option. i'm quite sure that this is the cause because only one "paintbrush" works while the other when i click to open with, it doesnt.
the problem is, i cant find anything related to this first download that might result in it showing up. terminal commands to locate the launch service didnt work (locate lsregister didnt work in the first place. odd) i didnt try the sudo command though, because of the warning that it might create in loss of system files.
is it possible to find out where are the other package contents of the first download? should i uninstall and reinstall paintbrush? how do i know if the uninstall process has been a complete one?

Reset the LaunchServices database with this one-liner:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
As for the Terminal command locate not doing what you expect, see my post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11383558&#11383558

  • Open With Duplicates

    Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me with this:
When I Control click on a file so I can use the "open with" so I can pick an application to open the file with. I get a long list that contains some of the same applications listed several times in a row on the list. For example Preview and Photoshop are there 5 or 6 times.
    Why is this?
How do I get the list so it only lists each application once.
Maybe it is supposed to be this way, I just prefer that it was a little more tidy and saved me from all the hunting and scrolling. There is only a need to have each app listed once.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Open the Terminal app (Utilities folder) and at the prompt paste in the following in its entirety then press return. When the command has completed the prompt will return. Quit Terminal. Problem is fixed.
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user

  • 10.4.6 Finder forgets "open with program " entry

Working well since 10.2 now in 10.4.6 my selection "open file with <my REALbasic program>" in the Info-window works only once; when I have stored the file again, then the opening program-selection toggles back to the former (wrong) program - in my case to "TextEdit (default)". The same effect appears immediately, if I try to select "change all such files" in the Info-window. What goes wrong? Can anyone help?

Here's a couple of things you can try:
Open the Terminal app (Utilities folder) and paste this command in at the prompt, then press return. Wait for the prompt to return. This clears out the launchservices db.
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user

  • Edit Finder Open With Menu

I just went to open an image from the Finder and noticed the Open With Context Menu was loaded with duplicate entries of the various applications that can open an image. Is there a way to edit this so only the current version of each application shows instead of every version installed via updates?
An example is Opera. There are 3 versions listed in the Open With Context Menu when I right click on a .swf file.

    rebuild your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Finding duplicate entries in pages doc...

i've got a huge pages document with email addresses.
is there a simple way to scan the document for dupes?
    anyone??
    thx!

If the email addresses are all that is in the document, they are in a list, and you also have Numbers, the following will work:
Select all of the list. Copy
Launch Numbers and open a new, blank document.
Click on cell B2 of the table in Numbers. Paste.
Your addresses should fill column B, with rows added to the table as necessary.
Enter this formula into C2: =IF(COUNTIF($B$1:B2,B2)>1,"DUP","")
(The result in C2 should appear to be an empty cell.)
Click on the Column Reference tab for column C to select the whole column,  then
Command-click on cell C1 to remove it from the selection.
Go Insert (menu) > Fill > Fill Down.
Your table will now resemble this one, with duplicate entries marked in column C:
With column C still selected, Copy, then go Edit > Paste Values.
This replaces the formulas in column C with the values calculated by that formula.
Click the Reorganize button, then in the Sort section, choose Column C.
The table will be sorted, bringing all the DUP entries together at the top of the table.
Select all of the rows containing DUP (Click on the Row Reference tab of the first, then shift-click on the Row reference tab of the last) to select all of the rows containing duplicate addresses.
    Go Table > Delete Rows.
Select the column containing the email addresses. Copy.
Return to the Pages document. Paste.
    Done

  • Duplicate Entries in Library

In the process of trying to move my itunes library to an external drive, I've ended up with duplicate entries for each file. Both entries play the same file, but when one entry is deleted from the library, the file gets deleted, and the remaining entry does not play. How do I remove one of the duplicate entries without deleting the file?

It seems there's only one library - on the external drive. Before I moved my library, I looked in itunes help to figure out how to do it properly, and never really got a clear answer, so I just copied and pasted my files onto the external drive, then deleted the original library off the internal drive, and things went from bad to worse from there. Everytime I consolidate the library, it just seems to duplicate everything, not really solving the problem. It's not a question of duplicate files - it's more a question of duplicate listings/entries for the same single file so that if I delete the wrong entry/listing from the library, the remaining listing can't find the file to play, because I've just unwittingly deleted the music file.

  • Duplicate entries in iCal.  I don't get it!

Is there some place that I can go to get a definitive explanation of how iCal, Mobile.me and Subscriptions are interconnected? I don't get it. I always seem to end up with duplicate entries in my calendar. If I remove a check mark in one calendar, then stuff disappears, but if I put the check mark back, then I end up with duplicate entries.
Seems to me that if I enter stuff only in iCal, then I should only see it once. Unfortunately, Mobile.me or subscribed calendars seem to cause things to appear more than once. Birthdays are a real problem. I enter them in contacts, but Mobile.me seems to want to pull them from there and from the calendar, then they show up twice. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, and there doesn't seem to be any clear instruction (that I can find), clearly outlining where or how stuff should be entered. Maybe I'm just dense, but trying to sync between Mobile.me, my Mac, iPad, and iPod....is making me crazy.

    JimminyC,
Try contacting Apple using Apple - Support - MobileMe.

  • Duplicate entry removal

Currently the omcpany I work for runs corporate time 6. Now don't laugh, we still use netscape 4.8 and the included palm sync (Netscape Calendar Link for Palm Pilot, NCSetup v2). I have a OS 5 palm device. Once a week it seems my conduit craps out and I uninstall and reinstall on the desktop and sometimes the NCSetup on my palm. I then end up with duplicate entries. Is there an automated way to remove duplicates in Corporate Time? My wokr around it to take the palm home sync it using the palm desktop and use the duplicate removal tool. Then bring the Palm to work resync and hope most of the duplicates get removed. We are getting ready to move to Thunderbird. And there is little I can do to influence the IT decisions.

    Hi 52779,
I'm not sure if this configuration is still supported, but if duplicates are being created, it could be due to a myriad of possibilities, many of which are Palm limitations.
The oldest supported client is CorporateTime 5.4 (until december), and Oracle Calendar sync for Palm, 3.0.
There is no automated way to accomplish this, as these meetings are not considered duplicates in the database, but were somehow created as new, replicas of the original, with a distinct UID.
The method you describe is as good as any...best regards.

  • Duplicate Entries on "Open With" Menu.

The subject pretty much explains the problem.
I haven't made any major changes to my system, but I recently noticed that when I right click (2 button mouse) on something and go to the Open With menu, I now have duplicate entries.
    IE: Adobe Image Ready
    Adobe Image Ready
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Photoshop
I think you get the point.
This seems to only be when I do this to images.
    Any Ideas.
    Thanks

That's handled by LaunchServices and sounds like a corrupt database. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html and

  • Duplicates entries in "open with" menu AGAIN....

    Hey guys
I have an issue with the Open With Crtl + click menu, i get duplicates of the programs that can be used to open the file, i konw that this problem was there since tiger and leopard, but now with SL i'm dissapointed of this issue AGAIN. I hope Apple its aware of this forum and resolves this problem with an update soon
If anyone knows a practical solution, please post it
    Thanks and greetings from Mexico

Hi again: OK, I am not really losing my mind, honest. Right clicking on a PDF file on the desktop and selecting "Open With" gave me not Duplicates, but Quadruplicates of each choice. I then selected the same PDF file and clicked "File" from the menu bar and then "Open With" and all was good, only one of each choice. I then go back to the "Right Click" method, all back to normal, one of each. Strange indeed.

  • "Open with" in mail shows duplicate entries

This seems like a CFBundleRoleType problem of some sort... It happens that if one decides to right-click an attachment in Mail and opt for "open with" sub-menu (something people rarely do, I suppose;) there's a list full of redundant entries. For example: A TIFF image attachment has an infinite list of "Open with" options with things repeating like this:
    Safari
    Preview
    Safari
    Safari
    Safari
    Safari
    Preview
    Preview
    Preview
... and so on. The list contains some programs that are inadequate for this filetype as well.
This _DOES NOT_ happen in Finder though. Finder gives a clean and correct "Open with" list.
My Leopard is a clean install with the previous Tiger installation's data and applications imported and is a week old.

I just noticed this problem in mail as well. Only some of my applications are duplicated. If I run both of the applications that are duplicated then one runs from the normal application folder and the other from the backed up timemachine folder on the external drive.
There seems to be no reason as to which applications are duplicated and which are not - some are Apple applications, some not.
I did notice a lot of unusual activity on my timemachine drive shortly before this happened. Backup was not happening and spotlight was not indexing but someone was reading the drive.
