Open With showing duplicate apps in finder

For those of you that use the Apple Mac App Store to download apps and are running into the issue of seeing your applications show up multiple times in the "Open With" command in the finder.  This invoked by holding control + clicking an item in the finder and choose the "open with" choice.
I saw another large thread and didn't find an easy answer so I thought I'd post the solution that worked for me:
1 - Launch Terminal.  This can be done by holding command key and hitting space bar and then typing terminal.
2 - In Terminal paste the following text and hit return:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
3 - After Terminal comes back tot he ready prompt you can quit Terminal.
4 - Relaunch finder by holding the Option key + clicking on the Finder Icon in your dock.
You can now verify that you only see one version of each appliction by selecting an item in your finder window and holding the control key and clicking on it to see what items are listed in the "Open With" choice.
Hit like if it solved your problem.
Thanks to Tom Nelson and his "Rebuild the Launch Database" article.

It didn't work for me. You should mention which OS X version your command was intended for. I got a path name doesn't exist error when running the command.
I found a similar command on a site not related to Apple that gave used a different path. I'm running OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) and that path did exist on my machine, I tried it and it work for me. Here's the steps I took:
1- Launch Terminal.
2- In Terminal paste the following text and hit return:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user && killall Finder
3- It will take some time (30 60 seconds) for the command to be completed. Once completed you can quit Terminal.
There is no need to relaunch Finder, as the command has it built into it ("killall Finder", at the end)

  • "Open with" shows multiple app's with same name; 2 at most are valid

I use Preview as my default JPEG viewer application; when I want to edit I used another application and use "Open With". I have a backup drive mounted and the app's backed up show... that's a nuisance, but acceptable.
However, there are 5 listings for some applications, yet only 2 possible copies (as verified by Spotlight). How can I clean-up the list? Is there a way to tell an app's source (in the menu)?

A long shot perhaps, but at the bottom of the Open With submenu you will see "Other...". If you go in there there is a setting for either "All Applications" or a specific application folder to be selected. Have you assigned the latter and does it help?

  • Right -click "Open With" shows old Illustrator 10, not newer CS3

At work we have Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3. Due to a large archive of graphics we keep an older version of Illustrator 10.0 for files that just don't open in CS.
I'm on a new machine with more memory so I want to give this Bridge a chance. But I just found it totally useless for Illustrator.
The first day I used it I went to open a PDF in Illustrator, so in Bridge I right click and go to open with to only find Illustrator 10 and Photoshop CS3 listed. No Illustrator CS3. Nor any option to browse and choose a different app.
I went through file associations, and changed all associations with 10 to CS3, but that doesn't solve how to open PDFs in Illustrator CS3 from Bridge without changing its default app from Acrobat.
    Here's what I mean:
    http://premium1.uploadit.org/TimothyB/bridge.jpg
No where is there an option to tell CS3 Bridge to see Illustrator CS3 instead of version 10. I imagine this might be due to the order the techs installed Illustrator? I hope this doesn't mean I need a tech to mess with my computer to reinstall everything until it shows up as CS3 instead of 10, there are already so many problems that can happen from having two versions installed.

In XP Pro, not there to be 100% sure, that "open with" already has Illustrator CS3 listed and no version 10, the opposite of what Bridge shows.
I'll try it, just in case that helps update Bridge.
    Thanks

  • Can I control the "open with" options in apps on the ipad?

I have a school loop app that allows access to files stored in a remote folder, similar to dropbox. I can see the files and when I select one I have an option to choose which app to used to open a document (it might be a word doc, a pdf, a ppt, etc.). The app options that show as available are not the apps that will open documents, however, I do have apps on my ipad that will open they - but they do not show up, ie: PDF Expert, Quick Office, Pages, etc. Can I control what apps appear in "open with" dialogue boxes?
    Thanks for any help.

    Simple answer: no.

  • How change the File Open With list of apps?

In Bridge CS3, how does one edit the list of applications in the File > Open With menu (also available from the contextual menu for any image).
The list contains a number of applications that I would never use to open an image, and I would like to add to it, a new image editor (pixelmator) that does not appear in it. I have looked in the Bridge Help and the Preferences dialog and don't see any option to do this.

OK, I have now learned that Mac OS keeps the list of which apps to open what, in the "launch services database."
This database can be cleaned up and reset which somewhat simplifies the list that is displayed by the Finder OR by Bridge CS3.
Here is an article on how to reset the launchdb:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
Be sure to read all the way to the end as there are updated instructions down among the comments.
Here is a thread in the Apple Support forums discussing the same issue, and it includes links to some 3rd-party programs that can reset launch services without use of a lengthy Terminal command:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1289317
Even after rebuilding the launchdb, I find that a large number of apps are "registered" to open JPG files, including Camino, Opera, TextWrangler and others with only a tenuous connection to JPG. I don't understand why this is, and I would still like to find a way to limit the JPG Open-With list to a few graphics programs. But cleaning up the launchdb as described in the linked pages, did get rid of some programs and added some missing ones.
Hope this actually constructive info is useful to others.

  • Open with menu duplicates. osx 10.8.1

It shows duplicates of VLC in the open with menu when I go to open a movie file. I am running osx mountain lion 10.8.1. How do I remove duplicates or fix the open with menu?

If you are nervous about using Terminal forcommand  a you may understand,  not I concur with Bjorn. It is a means of resetting the menu.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onxy.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using the Terminal command set outlined in Bjorn's post..

  • 'open with' shows 2 of each suitable application

Does anyone know why the 'open with' contextual menu would start showing each suitable app twice in the list?

Hi Simon (UK) from Cornwall, England,
I don't know why it happens but Dr Smoke has a fix for your problem Here.
Hope it works for you, it did for me when I had the identical problem last week.

  • "Open With" lists duplicates of applications

    Hello!
When I right-click (Control-click) on a file in the finder, and hover over the "Open With" item, it spools for a moment then comes up with a list of a bunch of applications. Unfortunately, many applications are listed twice (or more) times in this list. For example, if I do an "open with" on a PDF file, I see Photoshop Elements 4 listed 3 times, Adobe Reader listed twice, Safari listed twice, and then several other apps that I didn't realize even opened PDFs! I don't see Preview either.
I assume that this is a problem with the Launch Services database, but I don't know how to "rebuild" the database. Can anyone help out?
    Thanks,
    -Dan

    HI Dan,
    Try the following:
To reset Launch Services under Tiger
    1. Quit all running applications.
    2. Trash the following two files in the Macintosh HD > Library > Caches folder:
    • com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
    • com.apple.LaunchServices-014nnn.csstore
where nnn is the uid number, as listed in the NetInfo database, of the affected account. Type your Admin password if prompted to authenticate the deletion of these files.
    3. Restart your Mac.
    4. Log in to the affected account.
    5. Empty the Trash.
Verify that the problem is solved. If not:
    1. Trash the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file in the Home > Library > Preferences folder of the affected account.
    2. Repeat steps 1-5.
See if that helps... if not post back.

  • Right click, Open with shows PSE11 instead of PSE12

When I right click on a file and select OPEN WITH, only PSE11 is available even though I have PSE12 installed as well.  I have tried browsing to PSE12 editor and selecting it however, it still is not available in the Open With options when right clicking on a file.  How do I make this happen?

Yes, I am sure.  The options when right clicking on an image file including raw is only PSE11.  I manually added PSE12 and the editor opens however, the image never appears.  I also manually went to the PSE12 folder and seleted the editor (PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe) and it opens in PSE11 editor instead.
I have tried to get assistance from Chat Support however, they have stated that I need to call for support.  When I call for support they say there is only paid support for PSE.  That's just really odd as I just purchased this in Novemenber and the issue is obviously with the installation.

  • Right-click "Open with" shows multiple options of the same app.

Just bought this computer less than a month ago, everything is perfect except for this little bug that seems to be getting worse and worse.
Any idea whats happening here? I'm completely stumped!
    MacBook Pro
    Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013

Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)

That indicates a corrupt LaunchServices database, which controls that stuff. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste in this one-liner (ensure that there are no spaces in the first line, the forum's software sometimes displays
Launchse   rvices, instead of Launchservices, in the window), hit the return key, quit Terminal, and restart:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

This was the same issue in Ubuntu ( Gnome 2 ) and Wine.
Last I can remember is manually clearing them from ~/.local/share/applications and /usr/share/applications

  • "open with" duplicate entries

"at times" using "open with" shows many duplicate entries....reboot fixes it for a while..
I'm still trying to determine what is triggering this.
Any idea? Anyone see this in 10.8? I couldn't find anything searching the forums.

I am not familiar with all the causes of this phenomenon, but it happens to me from time to time, and I know why it is for me. I work with "clone" images all the time with dev work. When a clone is mounted alongside booting into  the main volume, Launch Services, which keeps track of applications used to open certain file types, "sees" the other application files on the mounted clone volume, and adds them to the database, resulting in the apparent duplication of "open with" entries.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onyx.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using Terminal.
Using Terminal to Rebuild the Launch Services Database:
Launch Terminal, located at /Applications/ Utilities/.
For OS X 10.5.x and later, enter the following at the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I don't know wjhy it is happening for you, but rebuilding the database will at least reset things to normal. The question to ask is whether you have other mounted volumes, say from other systems on your network, that contain Mac Apps.
I have also found a way to keep it from happening (in certain cases, for my dev work). When I create a clone, I also create what is called a "fstab" file entry, in the fstab file. This entry prevents named drives from auto-mounting. So, if I boot to a clone, my main volume on my internal SSD won't mount. Hence, no extraneous Launch Services database entries will created on the clone drive. If however, I boot to my main SSD, and then mount a clone, I don't use any fstab entries on the main SSD. This just means I have to periodically rebuild the Launch Services database. It is way too much trouble keeping fstab entries for all my clone drives on my main SSD. I only use the fstab method on the clones themselves.

  • Finder Locks Up on "Open With" command

Often, when I find a file in Finder that I want to open with a specific app, I right-click and mouse over "Open With" in the contextual menu. More than half the time I do that now, I get the beach ball and Finder locks up. I can't even force Finder to relaunch.
I've tried repairing disk permissions from the OS X install disk, but still no luck.

Do you have StuffIt Deluxe? More often than not problems with Finder like those you are having are caused by a contextual menu item installed by StuffIt. Take a look in
    /Library/Contextual Menu Items
    /Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items
See what you've got. If you have anything from StuffIt, remove it.
