OpenAL channel specs?

Hello- I've gotten good results using the OpenAL stuff on the iPhone.
I was wondering about how the playback is split among audio channels before mixing to main output. I can playback multiple sounds simultaneously, but cannot seem to play multiple copies of the same sound at once (i.e. a game "hit" sound, if you get hit twice at once, cuts off the one already playing ).

I'm running into the same problem where if a sound was hit twice, the first sound is cut off when the second sound is played.
I just want to clarify what you did to 'work around' this, you wrote a wrapper class to play the same sound on another source? The way CrashLanding is set up for its' sources, each source is dedicated to play a specific sound. It goesn't care if the sound is played twice or the current state of the source.
All this is new to me and I may be wrong in what I'm seeing.
I've also read at other dev sites that it's better to have a static number of sources defined where you keep track of the state of your sources in an array, then as you need a sound, create a buffer for that and play it on the next available source that isn't playing a sound by way of the state of the sources array.
That being said, I'm having trouble querying the state of the source (alGetSourcei to find the value of AL_PLAYING, etal) using SoundEngine.cpp/h from CrashLanding (much less trying to implement the stuff I just said.)
Anyone have any books, links or documentation (beyond openal.org) on examples of openAL (even if on another platform since its' the concepts that I'm after) that a newbie to openAL could understand? I tried goggling openAL on amazon.com and came up with almost nil results.
Any help or hints are appreciated.
