OpenGL Compositing
Hey guys
Ok basically. in most window managers accept for fluxbox and E17 which have inbuilt "transperancy" and some effects. i suffer a phew issues lately. i have done research and the issue with XFCE's comp manager is that it doesnt use opengl + vsync or something like that, and therefor cops screen tearing.
Also i tried Cairo compmgr. its good but caused screen tearing for some reason. i tried with vsync disabled and it didnt change the issue
Compiz was a huge performance hit on ubuntu ( im still fairly new to arch , 3 months in now ) and i havnt tested compiz here yet. though. compiz did have opengl/Sync to VBlank options which fixed tearing. which was nice
P.S: at the moment im using the MATE Desktop gnome 2 fork, loving it. but im not sure whats compatable with it in the compositing area
Basically what im wondering. is there any opengl based Compositing manager thats lightweight and doesnt have issue's. i did some reading on AIGLX and XGL which appearently are decent for that.
But i have no idea how to get AIGLX working. i checked the arch wiki and it says thats its builtin with x.org, so like. is there something i need to add to the xorg.conf or some sort of gui manager i can use
Plus. how is the performance/ideal behind AIGL/XGL with opengl. does it perform decently or would i be better off with compiz

i gave it a try. but in the comp manager settings gui. theres only an option for X Render and Software. how do i enabled opengl?
Lets look at a few things...
can you post the output of glxinfo (owned by the mesa-demos package)
Also, the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
They will be long, so I suggest posting them to pastebin and providing a link. If you do want to post them here, make sure you use BBCode Code tags

Weird behaviour in OpenGL compositing with r300g
Hello,
I have a weird issue on my laptop with both KDE 4.6.5 and 4.7RC2. When switching on desktop effects with Alt-shift-F12, the screen turns gray, with a darker gray for the panel. I can also see the decorations ok, but that's all. The weirdest thing is that Kwin doesnt complain about anything, and everything comes back to normal when I switch off desktop effects.
The only warning message i get is from dmesg: "composite sync not supported". I didnt find any similar description on forums or bug reports. The issue happens with Arch's KDE 4.6.5 to 4.7RC2 and Chakra 4.6.4 to 4.7RC2. It doesnt happen with Kubuntu 's KDE 4.6.2 (didnt try with later versions but its unlikely minor versions would change smthg right?)
graphic chipset is ATI Radeon Xpress200M (driver radeon r300g)
glxinfo reports :
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RS482
OpenGL 2.1 Mesa 7.10.3 (same happens with 7.11 rc1)
Other info:
The issue doesnt happen with Xrender backend
The issue still happens with any arrangement of options in the desktop effect advanced configuration (with/without Vsync, w/wo direct rendering...)
No (WW) neither (EE) in Xorg log, all extensions load fine (Composite, Dri, Dri2, glx ...)
kms enabled
Arch linux installed on usb disk, working perfectly fine when running on another workstation with intel graphics.
Doesn anyone have a clue what is going on? Is there something I am missing here?Below format: works perfectly fine

Kwin: OpenGL compositing disabled
Recently I tried to start KDM via inittab as mentioned in the wiki. Before that I used daemon and everything worked fine using Nvidia driver. After the change (for some reason) compositing is gone with following message:
[tuhyk@dell documents]$ glxinfo | grep -i direct
direct rendering: Yes
GL_EXT_direct_state_access, GL_EXT_draw_range_elements, GL_EXT_fog_coord,
Any ideas? Return back to daemon did not help.
EDIT: Xrender setting works, OpenGL does not at all. I discovered that issue is not user related. Also, new Xorg.conf generated via nvidia-xconfig did not help. Reinstalling nvidia and nvidia-utils packages did not help either.

[SOLVED] kwin crash when using OpenGL mode after upgrading to 4.7
I have a Ideapad Y460 (Graphic: ATi Mobility Radeon 5650). Recent days I upgrade my KDE from 4.7RC (4.6.95) to 4.7 (4.7.00) and also Catalyst from 11.6 to 11.7.
Update:
The problem has been solved. I used [kde-unsupported] source and kdebase-workspace package in that source contains OpenGL ES support while Catalyst doesn't support it. Thank @csslayer.
But when I use OpenGL mode, kwin crashed. I run
kwin --replace
to start kwin, then the Desktop Effect shows:
OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the past.
This was most likely due to a driver bug.
If you think that you have meanwhile upgraded to a stable driver,
you can reset this protection but be aware that this might result in an immediate crash!
Alternatively, you might want to use the XRender backend instead.
And there is a re-enable button. But the systemsettings window crashed when I pushed it.
I checked ~/.xsessiong-error and it shows this:
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
Major opcode: 20 (X_GetProperty)
Resource id: 0x1c0015a
I downgrade Catalyst but the problem still exists while KDE4.7 RC run well on my laptop. So I'm not sure whether it is caused by kwin or by Catalyst 11.7 or other packages.
Does anyone know the solution? Thanks for your patience.
Last edited by ukyoi (2011-08-01 08:34:20)I found an solution. Go to Settings/Mail, Contact, Calendar/Fetch new data and than enable Push and choose to fetch hourly or every 30 minutes. In this case your iPad will stay connected to wifi even when smart cover is closed. If you select Manualy than wifi connection will be terminated when in sleep mode.
(Not native english speaker, hope you'll understand) -
These are screenshots of KDE on my laptop, with KWin's XRender composite manager running.
The thing is, there is no hardware acceleration here. In these screenshots I'm using the vesa driver (with shadow framebuffer), with 915resolution to get my screen's native resolution.
And it is entirely usable. In fact some effects, like Resize, are faster than with hardware acceleration. Not as fast as OpenGL compositing, and it is a bit buggy, mind - Resize has trouble scaling some windows to the correct proportions - but seriously, what does this say about the state of 2D hardware acceleration on Linux? When I tried Xrender under KWin, minimizing a window took about four seconds, switching workspaces slightly longer.

KDE SC 4.5.0 moved to [extra]
KDE SC 4.5.0 has moved into the [extra] repository. Notable changes with respect to previous releases are:
* kdepim has seen no new release, please continue to use version 4.4.5
* due to incompatibility with ruby 1.9, ruby kdebindings are not provided
* webkit support in konqueror is provided by kwebkitpart
* KDM is now started as the kdm user
* upstream removed five translations: csb, mai, mk, si and tg
The full upstream changelog is available here.
Several users reported issues with kwin hanging when changing settings in the kdesettings dialog. So far this is only known to happen on some Intel and ATI cards with opengl compositing enabled. Possible workarounds include:
* use xrender instead of opengl compositing
* disable compositing
* export "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" before starting KDE
[edit]
The previous mentioned option to disable direct rendering in the kdesettings menu is ignored by KDE. Instead the "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" variable should be exported before starting KDE
Last edited by pressh (2010-08-27 07:22:39)Thanks for your work devs. I upgraded from a tty and everything went smoothly. KDE 4.5 is the first version that seems really snappy on my intel laptop, but I suspect this is because it's the first time it uses direct rendering (with the known bugs of course). The system settings hanging bug disappears if I put
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
in my /etc/profile but then I get the mediocre performance I always had. Also, can sb confirm that previous versions of KDE used indirect rendering on intel chips? glxinfo always showed that direct rendering was used, but I suspect this wasn't actually the case. This time, glxinfo shows that direct rendering isn't used when I hack the /etc/profile file. Anyways, I prefer to have the speed boost with the few glitches :-).

Radeon HD 7730 graphical artifacts (open source driver)
Hi,
I'm not very familiar with AMD video cards, so I hope there's someone with more knowledge on this topic, who can help me with this issue.
With no xorg configuration I get this artifacts after X starts (same in KDM):
With custom 20-radeon.conf (provided down below) I'm able to get rid of the artifacts but OpenGL compositing in KDE doesn't work:

1: glamor with Option "NoAccel" "off" - artifacts
2: glamor with Option "NoAccel" "on" - no artifacts

But with 2 and 3 OpenGL compositing in KDE doesn't work (resets itself to XRender), and graphics in supertuxkart looks like this.

[SOLVED (in kernel 3.8.8)] Random complete system freezes
I have installed Arch Linux on my desktop, however I am getting random complete system freezes when I use either GNOME Shell or KDE 4 when using OpenGL compositing. I have resorted to using Xfce (which uses Xrender for compositing).
Sometimes the system freezes immediately upon login.
Sometimes GNOME Shell says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again." and forces me out.
Sometimes the system works fine for an hour or so before it freezes.
Sometimes the driver appears to have crashed but then recovers (screen goes blank for a second and windows/decorations are redrawn, then works fine until it completely freezes again).
I am using the xf86-video-ati driver with a ATI Radeon HD 3850. I suspect the problem is with the video driver and/or kernel.
I have tried:
- Using Alt+SysRq+? keystrokes after adding kernel.syseq=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf (system doesn't respond at all once frozen)
- Keeping an SSH connection open (SSH client says "host down" once the computer is frozen)
- Doing a memtest (ran for 11 hours with no problems)
- Redownloading and reinstalling all packages from a different mirror (no improvement)
- Disabling KMS (GNOME Shell runs very slow, at wrong resolution, and the resolution settings doesn't give me the option of the correct resolution)
- Adding radeon.agpmode=-1 to my kernel parmaters (no improvement)
- Edit: Also I tried installing linux-lts (GDM and GNOME Shell graphics ends up all broken)
I was previously using Fedora 17 with the open source driver without any problems.

[Solved] Minimalist setup with no video tearing
Hello all,
I maybe jumping the gun a bit here (as I still have other issues with flash and can't really test properly - see here), but here goes.
After lots of reading and experimenting, I came to the conclusion that I really like the minimalistic approach of using Openbox and adding stuff as I need (Tint2 etc.).
However, It also came clear pretty soon that should I want to make things look a bit nicer (that is, using some sort of composite manager), I will most likely end with screen tearing to some degree, using one of the non-opengl composite managers (xcompmgr, cairo commgr, compton).
That is when I came across the option of using Compiz as a standalone WM, with no DE, which should solve the problem of tearing and still remain pretty minimalistic.
Compiz, however, if I understand correctly, is going through some development "difficulties" this days (mainly used in-house by Ubuntu).
Bottom line, my options, as I'm aware of, are:
1. Openbox + no composite manager - should have no tearing, as minimalistic as it gets, a bit rough.
2. Openbox + some composite manager (most likely compton) - will probably have tearing, still minimalistic, a bit nicer.
3. Compiz 0.8.8 from repos - not sure, actually, except from the fact that I will probably not have video tearing and that it's a bit outdated as the 0.9.x line is considered stable by Canonicial.
4. Compiz 0.9.7 (or 0.9.x should I feel adventurous) - I think I've read somewhere the 0.9.x line isn't really suited to be used as a standalone WM, something to do with the absence of Emerald (not too sure, though).
Any input regarding those 4 options is highly appreciated, Adam.
Last edited by adam777 (2012-06-05 21:36:30)Doesn't matter what video card you have. OpenGL is OpenGL. Older cards support older versions of it, but it should still be enough for basic desktop effects.
I was thinking of using a script that kills (or pauses) the composite manager if the media player window is fullscreen, since video tearing is more noticeable in fullscreen videos than windowed. Maybe adapt this script? Bah. I'm too lazy... Right now I can't be bothered with eye-candy. I used to have the tint2 clock set to right click and left click. One killed xcompmgr and refreshed the desktop and the other one started it, and restarted tint2 (for the true transparency to kick in). It's doable but I kinda gave up on it and went with vanilla Openbox + pseudo-transparency in tint2, guake and aterm because that's the only 3 programs that I wanted transparency in. And I can live without shadows. Easier on the resources too. -
Hey there,
ever since I installed KDE (plasma) on my notebook it has been really slow to start and doesn't show a progress bar, just fades in after 30 seconds or thereabout.

[solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects
Hello,
I wonder is anybody encountered similar problem (see topic)?
my system
today installed official arch kernel 2.6.30-ARCH
so my updated system looks as follows:
system:
Arch linux i686 up to date (system update 06-23-09)
kdemod 4.2.4 (up to date) i686
nvidia video card Go 7400
nvidia driver 185.18.14
file system: xfs
RAM 2GB
kernels:
2.6.30-git1 up to -git16 (installation of nvidia driver fail on git-17 and above due to the new and no doubt exciting changes to the kernel)
or
2.6.30-zen1
or
2.6.29.5
or
2.6.30-ARCH (official crom core)
booting to any of 2.6.30 kernels will cause lost of transparency effects, window decoration effects, smooth transition from login screen to the desktop)
booting to 2.6.29.5 will restore visual effects.
Because all the kernels have nvidia module installed, and problem identical persists with different nvidia drivers i assume that this is related to the changes in the kernel.
No erors in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/errors.log
/var/log/messages.log
I did post similar information at Chakra site but problem may not be related to kdemod 4.2.4 but kde 4, so that is why I decided to post about this issue here.
Thanks

I tried many options in the xorg.conf, also the nvidia-173.14.18-3 driver, but no effects yet.
OpenGl works flawlessly. -
I'm running a 2 monitor setup with nvidia twinview. At random intervals (between once a month and once every 2 seconds) one of the monitors (it happens on both, but only one at a time) will blink black and reset (like the cable has been unhooked). This has been happening for a year (and I keep arch relatively updated, so I don't think it's a driver revision problem), but recently it has gotten much worse. I suspected hardware failure, but I've tried everything I can think of and no change so I've finally ruled it as software.
Any suggestions?
I have tried:
New CPU/motherboard
2 video cards (9600GT and my old 7600GT)
2 different mobo/cpu combinations (Phenom X4 and Core2Quad, AMD and Intel board)
4 different monitors (2 Viewsonic, 2 Samsung -- all 1680x1050)
DVI and power cables.
2 different apartments.

Hello everyone!
I'm tring to run kwin 5.2 with EGL instead of GLX. I recompiled qt with -egl and -eglfs as per FS#37386 and I have nvidia-340xx 340.65-8. When I try to run it, I get:
KWIN_OPENGL_INTERFACE=egl kwin_x11 --replace
kwin_core: Forcing EGL native interface through environment variable
kwin_core: Initializing OpenGL compositing
kwin_core: bind OpenGL API failed
kwin_core: Creating the OpenGL rendering failed: "Could not initialize rendering context"
kwin_core: Failed to initialize compositing, compositing disabled
What am I missing/doing wrong? Also, what happened to the kwin_gles binary that was present in kwin 4.x? How do I get the same functionality with kwin 5?Apple - Sign up to be notified when iOS 5 and iCloud are available.

KWin compositing only in XRender mode / unable to use OpenGL mode.
Hi,
somehow I am unable to activate kwin4 compositing in OpenGL mode. If I try to I get the following message:
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type."
I have a NVidia GF GTX+ 9800 connected to 2 monitors in twinview.

Ok, I weren't able to find a specific compiz log, so I started it via console the output was:

Somehow I weren't able to get any window-decorations to work. (Emerald)

I allready tried that. I only added what was absolutely necessary to get the monitors working .... same problem........
I've read the NVidia wiki several times and very carefully. I went through every single step.. there is nothing more available that could solve my problem.
Thankyou very much for the responses!
