OpenGL SDK

i was on a website for troubleshooting on a game and there was a section about OpenGL/Direct X. I noticed in spotlight that there was an OpenGL SDK installer. What is OpenGL?

OpenGL has been the graphics render thingy for Mac's (and Linux) for quite sometime. Games will use it to communicate with the video card for graphics acceleration and all that. Many parts of OS X use OpenGL for rendering and acceleration.

    Setting CLASSPATH
If Java 3D is installed into the JDK or JRE, you do not need to include the Java 3D jar files in your CLASSPATH, nor do you need to include the Java 3D shared libraries in your PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH. You should include "." in your CLASSPATH or ensure that CLASSPATH is not set.

i have a few more fu questions.
Is the following module required for java3d in netbeans?
    http://java3d.netbeans.org/module_intro.html
Can i use the normal javac and java w/o mounting the class directory?
if I did want to mount the directory for the java3d classes, what directory would it be?
Is there a default folder in the jsdk that holds all classes, including the new installed j3d?
what is in the following directory? it looks like to a package directory located on a remote server, or a package located on the system that originally compiled the code.
As for mounting the class folder or class itself, would you be so kind to provide me with a j3d class mounting for dummies? I understand ide's and i'm getting decent at java, but j3d is still a marval.
import com.sun.j3d.utils;sorry for all the questions, but thank you for the help.

  • OpenGL 3.x Development

I have a few questions for which I have not found the answers despite a lot of searching.
I have a new MacBook Pro running OS X Lion 10.7.3 and XCode 4.  I have succeeded in building both a static and a dynamic library and well as a few applications.  I would like to add my libraries to XCode so they show up under XCode under Build Phase - Link Binary with Libraries.  I tried placing them in /usr/lib but they do not show up as desired.  I looked for /usr/local/lib but I don't find that directory on my macbook.  How can I get my libraries to show up under XCode under Build Phase - Link Binary with Libraries?
My next question concerns developing OpengGL 3.x applications for OS X Lion.  I don't find the usual extension libraries such as GLEW and GLEE.  I could, of course, download and use them.  However, I would prefer to use whatever libraries are built into the mac and XCode.  I do find the opengl framework under XCode under Build Phase - Link Binary with Libraries.  And, I notice that it contains the headers gl3.h and gl3ext.h.  Are these the prefered headers (and associated library code) to use for building OpenGL 3.x applications for OS X Lion (and presumably iOS) applications?
    Thanks,
    David

Thanks Mark.  I placed both libGLEW.a and libGLEW.dylib in /Library/Frameworks.  However, only libGLEW.dylib shows up in the dialog.  In fact the only libraries that the dialog displays are dynamic.  I guess to add static libraries you have to click the Add Other button.
Regarding OpenGL 3.2, I did find this specification at opengl.org:
    http://www.opengl.org/registry/doc/glspec32.core.20091207.withchanges.pdf
In this document there is some discussion about gl3.h.  I quote the relevant text:
"When platforms became common where the OpenGL SDK (library and header files) were not necessarily obtained from the same source as the OpenGL driver, such as Microsoft Windows and Linux, <GL/gl.h> could not always be kept in sync with new core API versions and extensions supported by drivers. At this time the OpenGL ARB defined a new header, <GL/glext.h>, which could be obtained directly from the OpenGL Extension Registry (see section I.1).
The combination of <GL/gl.h> and <GL/glext.h> always defines all APIs for all profiles of the latest OpenGL version, as well as for all extensions defined in the Registry.
<GL3/gl3.h> defines APIs for the core profile of OpenGL 3.2, together with ARB extensions compatible with the core profile. It does not include APIs for features only in the compatibility profile or for other extensions.
<GL3/gl3ext.h> defines APIs for additional ARB, EXT, and vendor exten- sions compatible with the core profile, but not defined in <GL3/gl3.h>. Most older extensions are not compatible with the core profile.
Applications using the OpenGL 3.2 compatibility profile (see appendices H and E) should #include the traditional <GL/gl.h> and <GL/glext.h> headers.
Applications using the core profile should #include the new <GL3/gl3.h> and <GL3/gl3ext.h> headers introduced with OpenGL 3.1.
By using <GL3/gl3.h> and <GL3/gl3ext.h>, instead of the legacy <GL/gl.h> and <GL/glext.h>, newly developed applications are given in- creased protection against accidentally using a “legacy” feature that has been re- moved from the core profile This can assist in developing applications on a GL implementation that supports the compatibility profile when the application is also intended to run on other platforms supporting only the core profile.
Developers should always be able to download <GL3/gl3.h> and <GL3/gl3ext.h> from the Registry, with these headers replacing, or being used in place of older versions that may be provided by a platform SDK. "
It seems that if you use gl.h (or gl3.h for the 3.2 core profile), then you shouldn't need to use GLEW.  Yet, most other documentation suggests using GLEW or GLEE.  However, I have not found an explanation for why.

  • Opengl and directx for java or c++ or Java3D

I am new to the 3D programming and I have many queries and I hope those expect can answer me. Thank you very much.
I have some experience in writing directx 7.0 in C++. I find that the IDirect3DDevice7 in directx7.0 does not support 256 colors but direct3ddevice in directx5.0 does.
However, the direct3ddevice in directx5.0 in 16 or 32 bit color performs very strange. Distortion is found in displaying a 3D image.
    1.     Do you have this experience? Does direct3ddevice in directx5.0 not work in 16 or 32 bit colors?
    2.     If I want to write a 3D directx program in C++ that can be work in every resolution, what can I do?
    3.     Can opengl work in every resolution 256 colors, 16, 32 bits?
    4.     Does opengl work in every platform?
    5.     Can I write an opengl program in window platform and run it in Linux without any modification or compilation ?
    6.     Does the opengl runtime different from platform to platform ?
    7.     If I deploy an opengl progam, do I need to deploy the runtime for a particular platform with it.
    8.     Opengl is claimed to be open source. What does it mean ? Can I modify the code of the opengl sdk or runtime and re-complie it and make it my own version of opengl ?
    9.     I find many version of opengl sdk in the web. Some is special to a particular hardware eg. NVIDIA. Some is not bounded to any hardware. What is the different between them ? How can I choose from them ?
    10.     I know that there is directx for java and opengl for java. Is it the so called java 3D ?
    11.     Does opengl or directx together with Java2 become Java 3D ?
    12.     However I cannot find any directx code or directive for importing the directx package in the Java 3D sample code.
    13.     Does the Javax provide the utility for 3D programming by hiding the 3D device or texture surface creation ?
    14.     I find some code segment from MSDN which shows the way to create a directdraw object in an applet. I wonder what is the proper way to use directx or opengl in java since my main goal is to create a directx application that can be worked in the web.
    15.     Lastly, from my understanding, directx is a com api which can be used in every programming languages. Does it imply that with a directx sdk, I can write a directx application in C++, java, or vb ?
    16.     But, I find that the code to do the same task in the three programming languages is very different. The object creation methods, the data structure for directx in the three programming languages is different. Is the same sdk realy used in different programming languages ? The object name for e.g. direct3ddevice is different from vb (Direct3DDevice7) and c++ (IDirect3DDevice7).

I'm no expert in 3D graphics programming, but I have some experience. I'll try to answer some of your questions.
    2.     If I want to write a 3D directx program in C++ that
can be work in every resolution, what can I do?I think both DirectX and OpenGL supports any resolution and color depth. It's more a matter of which resolutions your graphics driver supports.
    3.     Can opengl work in every resolution 256 colors, 16,
    32 bits?Yes.
    4.     Does opengl work in every platform?OpenGL is available on many platforms. Look at GL4Java if you want to use OpenGL in Java, it's available on many platforms. Look at: http://www.jausoft.com/gl4java.html
    5.     Can I write an opengl program in window platform
and run it in Linux without any modification or
compilation ?Yes, if you write it in Java. In C++ you will need to recompile the app.
    6.     Does the opengl runtime different from platform to
platform ?No, it's a standard. There are some extensions that are driver dependant, but if you stick to the standard it will run unmodified on all platforms.
    7.     If I deploy an opengl progam, do I need to deploy
the runtime for a particular platform with it.I don't think OpenGL is available by default on all platforms.
    8.     Opengl is claimed to be open source. What does it
mean ? Can I modify the code of the opengl sdk or
runtime and re-complie it and make it my own version
of opengl ?OpenGL is not open source. OpenGL is a standard, it can't be open source since there is no source code.
    9.     I find many version of opengl sdk in the web. Some
is special to a particular hardware eg. NVIDIA. Some
is not bounded to any hardware. What is the different
between them ? How can I choose from them ?If you have modern graphics card the driver includes support for OpenGL on MS Windows. For Linux you use Mesa I think. See GL4Java homepage for more info.
    10.     I know that there is directx for java and opengl
for java. Is it the so called java 3D ?GL4Java implements the OpenGL functions in Java. Java3D is a high level API that runs on either OpenGL or DirectX.
    11.     Does opengl or directx together with Java2 become
Java 3D ?No. The Java3D package is available for download at java.sun.com.
    12.     However I cannot find any directx code or
directive for importing the directx package in the
Java 3D sample code. You can't call DirectX directly in Java3D. It hides the underlying layers.
    13.     Does the Javax provide the utility for 3D
programming by hiding the 3D device or texture surface
creation ?Java3D is platform independent and hides things like the hardware, drivers etc.
    14.     I find some code segment from MSDN which shows the
way to create a directdraw object in an applet. I
wonder what is the proper way to use directx or opengl
in java since my main goal is to create a directx
application that can be worked in the web.I dont know if DirectX is available for Java. I recommend that you use OpenGL instead, or Java3D if you want an easy, high level API.
    15.     Lastly, from my understanding, directx is a com
api which can be used in every programming languages.
Does it imply that with a directx sdk, I can write a
directx application in C++, java, or vb ?In C++ and VB, yes. Dont know if there are any Java DirectX bindings available.
    16.     But, I find that the code to do the same task in
the three programming languages is very different. The
object creation methods, the data structure for
directx in the three programming languages is
different. Is the same sdk realy used in different
programming languages ? The object name for e.g.
direct3ddevice is different from vb (Direct3DDevice7)
and c++ (IDirect3DDevice7).Don't mix programming languages in the same app. Decide if Java or C++ is the right language for you, then use the tools available for the language you choose.
My recommendation is to go for Java and Java3D if you are inexperienced with 3D graphics programming. Use Java + OpenGL if you know about vertices, textures, transforms etc.

  • Stereo Not Available Error !

    Hello all,
I used to get stereo to work with shutter glasses on my
WinNT machine. But, today I installed a newer version of
Java and Java3D and stereo stopped working. It gives
me "Stereo not available" error. I tested my shutter
glasses with another example (not Java3D) and they are fine.
    Java version: SE v1.4.1_02
    Java3D version: 1.3.1-beta (OpenGL) SDK
Please tell me if anybody had the same problem and if it is
because of the java versions. If not do you have any suggestions?
By the way I am trying to run the example program under
    demo\java3d\PureImmediate\PureImmediate.java
    Thank you,
    Tina

hum, it is perhaps because you installed a beta version of java3d... By definition, you can't expect a beta version to work fine.

  • Installing Java3D with Windows XP?

Installation problems seem to be a frequent topic in this forum, though I haven't seen a solution yet. Maybe I can help by describing the (my) problem in detail. Any suggestions are welcome.
I'm running Windows XP professional, I have installed Java SDK 1.4 and it works correctly. When I try to install Java3D (java3d-1_2_1_03-win32-opengl-sdk.exe), the installer program extracts some files into a temporary directory, but then says it is done, while not actually doing anything. This behaviour is actually described in the installer program's "please read before continuing"-screen under the heading "installation".
The reason given is that I might not have the necessary rights. I am the only user on my machine and I have all the rights imaginable. Though, when I look at my j2sdk1.4.0 directory, the property dialogue says it is write-protected. So I remove the protection. Start the property dialogue again - the write protection is still there. This seems to be the heart of the problem.
With an earlier version of Java3D I had the same problem under Windows ME. Though under Windows ME the "protection" was actually an entry in a hidden file in der jsdk directory, so I could remove it. Under Windows XP I have unfortunately no idea how to remove this protection.
    Can anyone help?

I am using Windows XP Professional and JDK1.4 (j2sdk-1.4.0-win.exe).
I also had a problem with installing Java3D.
But, I got installed Java3D 1.3 Beta (java3d-1_3-beta1-win-opengl-sdk.exe) with Windows XP
    as following steps.
    1) Execute installer (java3d-1_3-beta1-win-opengl-sdk.exe).
    2) Introduction->Next
    3) License agreement->Next
    4) Readme->Install
    5) Choose a JRE VM->Install->Choose... (Choose your JRE VM folder, although you feel it seems be weird)
    6) Previous
    7) Choose an SDK VM->Next->Choose... (Choose your j2sdk1.4.0 folder)
    8) Install
Don't select "Add Java 3D to these VMs", it will crash your installer.
I think that the installer has a problem in detecting your VM folders.
Please, let me know whether it works or not.

    Regards,
    Prashant

    Prashant,
what you are doing with the HTML-code above is to use the IE inbuilt Java VM. This VM is very old and corresponds to the Java 1.1 Specification. Java 3D requires a Java2 Platform.
To run Java 2 Applets in IE you must use the Java Plugin JPI. I think, there is also a JPI Forum.
In a few words: If you have installed the actual Java 2 SDK from SUN (JPI is included) you can replace the Java VM in the IEs Options Menue (there is a checkbox in the advanced options)
To run Java 2 Applets in your customers IE you must change the applet tag in your HTML code into a Plugin-Tag. This is different for Mozilla and IE and therefore a complex task. You will find a tool named HTML-Converter within your Java home directory, which will help you to convert an applet tag into correct Plugin-Code.
    Regards,
    Oliver

    j2sdk-1_4_2_01-windows-i586.exe
    java3d-1_3_1-windows-i586-opengl-sdk.exe
I got these messages from my program everytime it gets mouse input or object transform changes.
[java] wglMakeCurrent Failed: The handle is invalid.
    [java]
    [java] extensionStr == null
[java] wglCreateContext Failed: The handle is invalid.
So then I installed same old Java3D 1.2.1_03 into Java 1.4, same thing happening. I also tried the demo that it came with.
    Demos that gave same error:
    AWT_Interaction
    PickTest
    Morphing
    Demos that worked:
    ConicWorld
    HelloUniverse
    TickTockPicking
It's definitly not my program. I tried installing same stuff on another machine, also running window 2000, same graphics driver, and everything works fine. The only difference is this one has NVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200, the other one (working one) has GeForce256. But my co-worker said he also has GeForce4 and was able to run the program with Java1.4, though I dont know which version exactly.
    Anyone seen similar problem before?

that worked, i also didnt realize i had to uninstall the other version, thought they just override each other...
    thanks

  • JRE 1.4.0 and Java3d

    Hello everybody!
I've installed in my computer (win 98) every jre since the jre1.1.4. So, i've desinstalled them, in order to put in the 1.4.0. But when i try to install java3d, it tells me that it can't find java vm, others errors have appeared always concerning the java vm. Is anybody could help me.
    Many thanks.

    I'm using 1.4.0 with OpenGL version of Java3d v. 1.3beta 1. But I only use it on NT 4.0, Win2K and WinXP.
I've never had a problem with the Java3D v 1.3Beta1 installer finding the Java2 SDK 1.4. You have to make sure you've downloaded java3d-1_3-beta1-win-opengl-sdk.exe, vice ..rt.exe.
I've been able to install earlier versions of J3D (1.2.1_03...1.2.1) with SDK1.4, but I've had trouble with performance and various crashes.
Can't comment on Win98 specifically. Sorry.

  • [iPhone SDK] Resizing an OpenGL surface

So I took the MyEAGLView from the Crash Landing demo. It sets up a basic OpenGL view for me to draw 2d elements on. And it's been working fine. But I want to resize the view when the user rotates the device. So I set autoresizesView = YES on the view. Which causes it to destroy and recreate the OpenGL frame buffer / render buffer. But afterward, all I get is a purple screen rendered. And I don't really know where to start looking for how to resolve this issue.

    Hey there,
You need a development certificate in order to compile the code using OpenGL (we stopped our project too). So a friend of mine applied for the 99 USD dev kit to get a certificate so we could do this type of development.
The free SDK does not let you upload to the iPhone yet so thats the only solution for now it looks like. Hopefully we'll get our certificate soon but who knows when that will happen.

  • IPhone SDK - OpenGL ES

    Hello,
I've done quite a bit of OpenGL programming and was excited to use OpenGL ES via the iPhone SDK. It turns out that OpenGL ES content cannot be simulated and must be run on the iPhone itself.
I live in Canada, where the iPhone hasn't officially been released (I own an iPod Touch). Is there any way to start using OpenGL ES now that will allow me to get a feel for how the code will run on the iPhone?
    Thanks.
    Brennan

  • [iPhone SDK] OpenGL and gDrawElements

Trying to learn OpenGL at the same time I'm learning the iPhone SDK
I made a simple cube and was trying to display it on the iPhone, what I get is just a unrecognizable blob on the screen. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? thanks.

Thanks for the reply. i did try that suggestion, but the cube still isn't rendering to anything even remotely resembling a cube. I was pretty sure I did a sizeof(GLUNSIGNEDSHORT) and got 4 on NSLog, but I could be wrong. I exported this data out of Cheetah 3D. Perhaps there is a better program for exporting 3d data for iphone? I'm at a loss for what else could be wrong. Probably I am missing one gl comand or parameter, I just can't figure out what it is.

  • Memory issues in java3d1.2(openGL ver) and 1.2.1-03 sdk(openGL ver)

    hi ,
i am working in java 3d and handling memory issues .I have made following observations.
In java3d 1.2 version, when we close a primitive ,(transform group,point3d,transform 3d release) about 80% of memory used by the primitive when it was opened.but point4d releases only 2% of memory.
on a contrary when i use java3d1.2-03 sdk point4d releases about 75% of memory and others(transform3d,transform group,point3d ) releases about 40% of memory allocated to them.
can somebody tell me if there is some kind of difference in these two versions related to memory?or is there any memory bug in the later version?
    thanks
    sangeeta

    hi,
We r using memory management tools like Jprobe and optimizer IT to count the rate of memory released.
    Thanks

  • After updating to 10.10.2, my OpenGL applications do not work, and there are problems with window updates/refresh in App Store, and many applications, Google Chrome is unusable.

After performing the OS X 10.10.2 update, OpenGL applications, for example Starry Night Pro fail to run, there are numerous windows update/refresh problems (incomplete refresh, remnants of window/frame borders), and some applications, for example Google Chrome are unusable, as cursor motion in the application window causes the display to flash horizontal bars in the window.
I've tried a variety of things, including downloading the most current release of Xcode, turning on/off transparency in Accessibility, graphics switching, and a few other things, but the problem persists.
The App Store display behaves similarly.  I am running a MacBook Pro.

  • How can I use OpenGl for iPhone games??

Hi! As you know I really want to be an iOS developer. I know how Xcode works. But I don't know for the graphics and animation. I've heard that OpenGl can be used in games. But how? I mean like connecting the animations in OpenGl to the program written in XCode. I don't understand that part yet. So please can you guys explain me about that. I thank you all.

    Hi Eric,
it would help me frame answers if you give the background information:
    - do you know any 3D computer graphics theory? E.g. viewing transformations.
    - do you know any openGL already?
    - do you already know objectiveC and ios programming?
    To answer your questions:
    - the OpenGL ES libraries are already included as part of the iOS SDK, so if you have that you are set.
    - I am using an Air myself, works fine for developing for iOS, including code using OpenGL ES.
    - OpenGL ES is based on OpenGL 3.0, so is very similar. Almost the same.
    - read the post I linked to:
    http://db-in.com/blog/2011/01/all-about-opengl-es-2-x-part-13/
He explains how to hook things up quite well. However, you do already need to understand how to develop for iOS.
As I mentioned above, it helps to know 3D Graphics principles. If you do not know that then it is difficult to animate using openGL (or any other SDK). There are third party tools available (e.g. Corona, Unity, project Anarchy) that can make life easier, but at some point you simply have to learn 3D graphics. Trying to do animation without understanding graphics is like trying to write native apps without understanding programming. You can cheat to do basic stuff, but nothing useful or deep.
This is not easy stuff, you will have to put some work into it. Start with the above link as an intro, and also the apple docs pointed to by teacup.
    Good luck!
