Opening network and programs on start up

I've recently talked my boss into up dating computer at work there imac G3's running 9.2.2 how do I set computer to log on to network and open program on start up.

If you are continuing to use OS 9, any alias you place in the "Startup Items" folder inside the System Folder will be opened on Startup, for a single-user OS 9 Mac.
If you are using Multiple Users, this may change a little. Each Users may get his own private "Startup Items" folder which would launch when that user logs in.
"to log on to network"
I am not certain what you mean by this. Get on the Internet and do a google search? Look up your files on a company Server? validate your user ID?
There are ways of using a Mac OS X Server, 10.4 or earlier \[the feature for controlling OS 9 computers is not available in 10.5 Server] to control system-wide user-ID verification and file control. You could also use older software, such as AppleShare IP for this. What I am describing is used in schools, so that any user can use any computer. All User files are stored on the Server, and any workstation computer can be sent out for service on a whim -- the individual workstation computers have no user-specific files on them. Backup is centralized, and can be done in a comprehensive way.

  • My mini Mac with a i5 processor is extremely slow to open documents and programs. Is there a solution to this??

Anyone can asset me please. My mini Mac is a 2.3 GHZ i5 Core. 8 GB Ram 13333 MHz with OS 10.7.5.
Pretty much since day one this computer is very..extremely slow to respond to any command. Opening documents or programs the system spin for ever.
Any idea what could be causing this???  I was told that to many pictures slow down the system, I have only 700 pic on file

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Question about open network and Airport

    Hi,
in my school there is a open network that allows me to surf the web with my MacBook, but my room has a very bad location so for me to connect to the network I have to put my MacBook in the window of the room. I always try to connect from inside the room but I don't have signal available. My question is: can I use some sort of Airport extreme, express or generic Wireless Router to capture the signal in the window and then send it to the inside of my room??? Any suggestions, websites? I have no access to the router (no admin access to configure).
    Thanks!
PS: Sorry, english it's not my first language (writing from Chile)...
    Best,
    AUP

Do you need to be wireless in your room?
If not then an ethernet wireless bridge would be a possibility such as the Linksys WET54G.
If you want to be wireless you could use a Linksys WET54G to pick up the signal from the Window and then connect a wireless access point (such as the Airport Express or any cheap 802.11g wireless access point) to the WET54G for wireless access.

  • Networking and programming

why is that in all the universities networking courses has programming in it?

    Hi ,
We do need to telnet the elements but it is via. script.
It is mainly useful when you have 1000 devices (I mean not exactly 1000 but more # of devices) in network
and you want to configure some command in all devices where script is actually in  use. It will login to all devices and do as per your instruction.
I am preparing script where script will login to device and take output of few commands and store it in file ..and after completing some activity on that device (Like card changing , some BGP changes) it will again take outputs and compare it with previous one and will tell me if there is any evolution due to this activity performed.
I hope this information is useful.

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Connecting ePrint to Internet via open network and separate security log on page

My Deskjet 3520 will not connect to the internet because the wireless netwok in my building is open / unsecured but a secondary log on / password is required to fully access the web.  When connecting to the network from a PC these details are entered via a normal web page.  The printer does not have the capabiity on the menue screen to view web pages.  Therefore, is there any way to get around this issue using set-up or utility software to be able to enter details manually?
    Thanks

Hi @cash1041 , welcome to the HP Forums. I understand your printer will not connect to the internet with your secure work network. Unfortunately your printer requires an active internet connection to use ePrint. Your current configuration will not work.

  • Request for Help - Very slow and programs crash, etc. since upgrading to Lion

I have searched the forum for a while looking for answers, but everyone seems to have different issues.
Since upgrading to Lion last week, EVERYTHING is running slow.  I have an iMac (late 2009) with 4GB ram and over 700GB of free hard drive space.
I am not running a ton of heavy duty programs -- just the basics - word, entourage, safari, preview, and occasionally Photoshop, iPhoto, etc.  I haven't even tried to edit any video since upgrading.
I continually get the "spinning wheel" when doing the most simple tasks like deleting a mail message, or opening a pdf file.
I have done all software updates.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kim

Entourage & Photoshop are both serious memory hogs.    Export your data to Mail, Addressbook and iCal*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/entouragemigration.html
Next for Photoshop, make sure to follow tips on the http://roaringapps.com/apps:table website for your version of Photoshop, to ensure you aren't overtaxing your system, and that you are usign any applications that are current for Lion. If you have any WiFi routers, make sure WPA2 password protection is on, and not WEP, and not an open network, and that their firmware has been tested with Lion.  Lastly, speed issues may be due to website design.  Try different browsers*: http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html

  • AirPort with many closed/open networks.

There seemes to be a bug with the available networks listing in AirPort.
It lists all networks it can see, but fails to include information about wether or not these are open or closed/protected.
Thus if you find yourself somewhere with a gazillion WiFi networks, of whom most are locked, you end up spending an eternity before finding the open one(s).
Does anyone know of a way around this?
A filter for only listing the open networks would be great.
A small status icon besides network names like they do in every other OS I ever saw would be ok.

Ahh, I have Linux for that...
I have a couple Linux installs, but I don't/can't do much of what I need to do with them... not Net-centric here... don't even own a TV for that Matter, and since Music died long ago... not much to listen to anymore!
Let me get this straigh. Is it possible to use this device purely as a detector? That is, just plug it in to find the names of open networks, and then log on with the AirPort?
Don't even need to plug it in to find Networks and any encryption they use, it has it's own LCD read out... just need to plug it in to a USB port once in awhile to charge it up! Use it disconnected if you like to find and enumerate any network within range... back to the Mac and connect to the open one(s) it shows, or have it hooked up to the Mac, (works with a USB extension cable for even more usefulness, (has better range/speed than any of my Apple cards... no n cards here though)
Alternatively, plug it in, switch networks, find networks, then switch back?
Yes, or not switch back and use it to connect... it & it's APP give far more info/options than the built in one! Yet you could switch back to a Location with Airport only enabled and connect to whatever!
(I have had 2 or more Wireless connections enabled at once, but it's best to have different Locations with just one enabled... can't tell you the exact steps to have/get 2 Wireless going at once, though it is possible, yet a whole lot easier/simpler to just have one enabled per Location).
I'm amazed at how many apps "call home" at startup / whenever they feel like it..
Thanks for the tip about Little Snitch... I've tried it, but I found there are a few APPs that work around it somehow, several Apple ones too!
Every day that goes by seems that there is something new in the works to take control of MY computer away from me, I only trust MS less than Apple on this issue... George Orwell is rolling over in his grave I tell ya... covered that iSight with tape yet that can be controlled by sites you visit?

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
    All responses welcomed!

I tried to update the latest software update for my MacBook pro (which was on 10/12) and after it started to update it restarted like normal but when it started back up it was running painfully slow and none oft programs will open. They all quit unexpectedly. iTunes microsoft word all of them quit unexpectedly. Help!

Exact same problem with my 2010 MBP 2.4ghz 4gb ram 10.6.8. iTunes said update was needed, Software Update ran with various updates including a security update, truthfully didn't pay much attention, I always install the Apple updates. After the restart it took 3-4 times longer than normal to get to the login screen, same to get to the desktop but I'm familiar with that occurring on update restarts. Unfortunately it got worse from there. Performed a full shutdown and startup. Same long boot.  After the desktop finally loads every mouse button press received a 2 minute beachball. I use menu-meters and both processors are under 10%. Waited a few minutes for disk utilities to launch, repair permissions estimates 3 hours for a typical <10 minute process. Activity monitor shows nothing over 10% CPU most of the time however ReportCrash pops to the top often. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW zero problems until this update.

  • Our iPad air keep kicking out of the Apple TV. None of the other iPads we have on the same network and the same content do this. The program kicks off the AppleTV and starts playing on the iPad about every 10 minute

We have used the 2 Apple TVs and the 5 different IPads successfully on both Apple TVs. But the iPad air, on the same content, on the same network, on the same Apple TV drops off the Apple TV and the content starts playing on the iPad. When we choose Apple TV on the AirPlay button, it starts playing on the TV again. It does this about 6-7 times an hour. We have the latest software update. We have also deleted and reinstalled the App to play the context (iView) and it still does this.

    Hey there TandViv,
It sounds like your other iPads work correctly when Airplaying to your Apple TV, but one disconnects about ever 10 mintues or so. I have a few thoughts for this issue you are seeing. First, try closing all the apps:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone and test it again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists try resetting the network settings on the phone and see how that works:
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
From: iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
If the issue persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

Let's try the fixit from the following Microsoft document with that one:
Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled

  • Programs close completely then reopen when opening network files.

Word and Excel will close all windows and reopen to start screen for each program when opening a Word or Excel file from a network drive.
    This is Office 365 x64.
I have rolled back to April build.
    I have uninstalled and re-installed.
    Still same issue.
Do have separate install of MS Visio 2013.

    Hi,
Is there any problem when you open a Word or Excel file from local drive?
Please try to add the network share location to the Trusted Location to check if it helps.
If you have any security program installed, please temporarily turn off it to test the issue again.
In addition, we can also perform a Windows clean boot to check of this issue is caused by software conflict. See:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us
If above didn’t fix the issue, please open the Windows event viewer and check if we can find some related logs.

  • What is the diff b\w open form and start form in scripts.

    Hi,
can any one tell me what is the diff andb\w open form and start form in scripts.when we should use open form and when start form.

    Hi Friend.
I have understood some usefull information and would like to share with you.
Within one transaction, you can open and close several layout sets using OPEN_FORM and
CLOSE_FORM, however not simultaneously. You can use parameters in the OPEN_FORM to control
whether the output is stored in the same print request. But also the SAP spool decides,
depending on several plausibility checks, whether new output is appended to an existing
print request or whether to create a new print request anyway.
    CALL FUNCTION 'OPEN_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'CLOSE_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'OPEN_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'CLOSE_FORM'
You cannot combine ABAP/4 list output and SAPscript output in one print request.
    START A LAYOUT SET AGAIN
Usually a print program does not print only one urging letter or one account statement, but
several layout sets for different customers. To have the output for each customer begin with
the start page of the layout set, you must start the current layout set again and again.
To start a layout set again, you must first end the current layout set and then open the
layout set again. Within one print request, first call the function module END_FORM. It
executes the final processing for the current layout set. Then start the layout set again
using START_FORM. Output then begins again on the start page of the desired layout set.
    CALL FUNCTION 'OPEN_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'START_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'END_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'START_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION 'END_FORM'
    CALL FUNCTION CLOSE_FORM
    Hope your obstacle is cleared.
If not do ask me again?
