Operating system choices?

May I order a new Macbook pro with Mavericks instead of Yosemite from the Apple Store?

Do they?
Previous refurbs that I have bought did not come with the latest (came with Mountain Lion after Mavericks released), maybe that's changed. The store no longer seems to specify which version of OSX they come with?
Must read to the end of the post I see you already said that.

  • Operating System Choices for OWB

If the 9i database is running on a Sun Unix box, and the 9iOAS is on a windows 2000 machine, would a person install the OWB on a seperate box?

It is possible to install it any way you want, so your proposal (Client on PC, Application Server on a mid tier machine and database on o Sun Unix server) makes perfect sense to me. Considerations would be (just from the top of my head) ease of maintenance (upgrades, backups etc.), processing load (are you using iAS for purposes other than OWB and what is the processing load on it, what is the situation on the database server etc.), network traffic etc.
9iAS runs well on a NT as well as a unix box. I would suggest to base your decision on the machine total cost of management (purchase, support, management etc.) and on the existing skill set in your department (if the system adminstrator is already familiar with unix, it would make sense to have a unix middle tier). Just my thoughts...

  • Remote desktop connection issue with an RDP client while connecting to some of windows 2008 and 2003 operating system flavors and not receiving SDin value choice 26 from DomainMCSPDU

    Hi Team
We have our RDP client and i came across with one issue "Expected data got 3" with this client.
This issue is getting while connecting some of below operating system flavors.
    Microsoft Windows 2008 Enterprise edition
    Microsoft Windows 2008 Standard edition
    Microsoft Windows 2003 servers
When we are trying to get RDP to those servers with our client, getting "Expected data got 3" error. One more main thing here is the specified error is not getting for all the servers of same operating system in above list.
Able to get the RDP console for those servers using mstsc client.
When i read the [MS-RDPBCGR] specification, i found the below points
mcsSDin (variable): Variable-length PER-encoded MCS Domain PDU (DomainMCSPDU) which encapsulates an MCS Send Data Indication structure (SDin, choice 26 from DomainMCSPDU), as specified in [T125] section 11.33 (the ASN.1 structure definitions
are given in [T125] section 7, parts 7 and 10). The userData field of the MCS Send Data Indication contains a Security Header and a Valid Client License Data (section 2.2.1.12.1) structure.
In my code i am not getting SDin value as 26. Is it the problem with Remote desktop Licensing in RDP servers as specified in the specification like "The userData field of the MCS Send Data Indication contains a Security Header and a Valid
Client License Data (section 2.2.1.12.1) structure."
Could you please explain me is this issue is happening due to Licence configuration in RDP server and please provide support with server side configuration if any because our code works for other servers ?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Pavan G.

  • Alt Operating Systems on the MacBook. What is a good choice?

I have a macbook 2ghz core 2 duo and want to install a different operating system on my macbook. I am not really interested in windows, but am deciding between:
    bsd
    linux
    solaris
I do not have any code background, and will not be able to do much outside of a gui interface. I understand that there are many different variations on these operating systems, but don't know what is good for someone with a good windows and mac understanding only under the context of gui.
I have some interest in solaris, as it was once not open-source, but I really don't know much about any of them.
Anyone have some advice on what to choose?

All linix configurations can compile and run all of the same software, sometimes it requires a little bit of tweaking but thats usually covered by the good old Open Source community. If your not very good with the CLI Id be a little wary of Fedora as it takes a lot more work to set up configuration and you really need to study it to understand how it works. Red hat is nice because they have commercial support if your willing to pay for it, Im not , its a pretty standard distro and works for alot of middle to high end technical people. href="http://www.ubuntu.com/" . Check it out before you make your choice though its designed around introducing people to Linix.

  • Leave the choice of the operating system to the consumer (Windows, Linux, no OS-)

I recently bought a new Acer laptop. I stopped using Microsoft Windows more than 10 years ago (I am a happy Ubuntu Linux user). However, when I bought my laptop, I was forced to buy it with Windows 8.1 pre-installed on it. I told the salesman I didn't need Windows 8.1 and even if it was pre-installed, the first thing I would do would be to format the hard drive and put Ubuntu Linux on it. In the end, I still had to buy it (and therefore buy a Microsoft product I will never use). I think it would be very beneficial for customers if they could choose the Operating System of their choice (or no OS at all) when buying a new computer. Of course you could still tell that the computer has been only tested and validated with a given version of an Operating System and that there will not be any technical assistance if another OS is used on a given computer. For information, in many countries in Europe, it's illegal to force people to get something when they buy something else. This is unfortunately still what is happening in 2014 in the laptop/desktop World because of Microsoft monopoly.

ML2014: I too would like to consider implementing UBUNTU on an old Acer portable with an AMD processor and a 60GB built in drive that has a known maximum address space of 2gb.  It is currently using the Windows XP operating system it came with but in March 2014 Microsoft plans to discvoninue all support.  Hopefully they will not take down the text archives on the corporte web, but I would not put it past them to perpetrate that crime.  I'm a retired once certified Microsoft Professional that still has an identity on the web set up some years ago.  (I forget how many)  but Putting UBUNTU on an older portable like the one I have seems like a sensible option when compared to keeping it in a maintenance limbo.  I sprang for a new LI-Ion battery for it last year and it is stable as a rock right now, but not used very much and I would like to put it in the hands of an Open Source based Non Profit I work with once it is properly set up and configured so that their one-year VISTA folks can have yet another computer to use in the field. It connects to the local urban free wireless internet and the password protected wifi server in the offices under Windows XP and I do not have a clue about UBUNTU, it would be a learning project for me.  Have you come to a decision regarding UBUNTU for your portable.  Mine is an ACER 5000.

The subject of buying/selling a Mac is quite complicated.  Here is a guide to the steps involved. It is from the Seller's point of view, but easily read the other way too:
    SELLING A MAC A
Internet Recovery, and Transferability of OS & iLife Apps
    Selling an Old Mac:
    • When selling an old Mac, the only OS that is legally transferable is the one that came preinstalled when the Mac was new. Selling a Mac with an upgraded OS isn't doing the new owner any favors. Attempting to do so will only result in headaches since the upgraded OS can't be registered by the new owner. If a clean install becomes necessary, they won't be able to do so and will be forced to install the original OS via Internet Recovery. Best to simply erase the drive and revert back to the original OS prior to selling any Mac.
    • Additionally, upgrading the OS on a Mac you intend to sell means that you are leaving personally identifiable information on the Mac since the only way to upgrade the OS involves using your own AppleID to download the upgrade from the App Store. So there will be traces of your info and user account left behind. Again, best to erase the drive and revert to the original OS via Internet Recovery.
    Internet Recovery:
    • In the event that the OS has been upgraded to a newer version (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion), Internet Recovery will offer the version of the OS that originally came with the Mac. So while booting to the Recovery Disk will show Mountain Lion as available for reinstall since that is the current version running, Internet Recovery, on the other hand, will only show Lion available since that was the OS shipped with that particular Mac.
    • Though the Mac came with a particular version of Mac OS X, it appears that, when Internet Recovery is invoked, the most recent update of that version may be applied. (i.e. if the Mac originally came with 10.7.3, Internet Recovery may install a more recent update like 10.7.5)
    iLife Apps:
    • When the App Store is launched for the first time it will report that the iLife apps are available for the user to Accept under the Purchases section. The user will be required to enter their AppleID during the Acceptance process. From that point on the iLife apps will be tied to the AppleID used to Accept them. The user will be allowed to download the apps to other Macs they own if they wish using the same AppleID used to Accept them.
    • Once Accepted on the new Mac, the iLife apps can not be transferred to any future owner when the Mac is sold. Attempting to use an AppleID after the apps have already been accepted using a different AppleID will result in the App Store reporting "These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID".
    • It appears, however, that the iLife Apps do not automatically go to the first owner of the Mac. It's quite possible that the original owner, either by choice or neglect, never Accepted the iLife apps in the App Store. As a result, a future owner of the Mac may be able to successfully Accept the apps and retain them for themselves using their own AppleID. Bottom Line: Whoever Accepts the iLife apps first gets to keep them.
    SELLING A MAC B
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
    A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
    1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
    2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
    3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
    side.
    4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
    sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
    3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
    5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
    A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
    1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
    2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    4. Install OS X.
    5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
    6. Shutdown the computer.
    B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
    1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
    Utilities window appears.
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
    3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
    6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
    7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • NO REMOTE BACKUP & RESTORE ON BLACKBERRY PROTECT ON BB10 OPERATING SYSTEM --- READ THIS POST

    Dear BlackBerry,
First of all I would like to establish that I am a very loyal customer of BlackBerry, so anything that I will say in this letter is because of the personal concerns shared by me and millions of loyal BlackBerry customers.
BlackBerry have launched the new BlackBerry Classic Q20 phone.
Apart from the reintroduction of the Navigation and Track pad that is above the physical keyboard and slightly bigger size.
What are the real differences between this new BlackBerry Classic Q20   and the BlackBerry Q10 ?
The main issues and concerns are that BlackBerry have reduced and in fact left out several features on the BlackBerry 10 operating system, for which was available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, such as on the BlackBerry Bold 9900.
Some features may not be vital or important, but other features were vital and important and by BlackBerry leaving out these vital features, it beckons the question as to why are BlackBerry limiting the software functions and capabilities of the BlackBerry 10 operating system as to what the BlackBerry 7 operating system has in place.
Do not misunderstand me in what I am saying, BlackBerry is still the best in what it does and I love the product. And the BlackBerry 10 operating system does have features and functions that the BlackBerry 7 operation system does not have.
But the whole point of improvement is that BlackBerry keep the best and vital functions that are available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system and actually include those features and functions in to the BlackBerry 10 operating system. That would make sense and move forward.
There are two vital features and functions that I will now mention that are available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system but was left out of the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Firstly, there is a feature on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, called   "SELECT ALL"
This feature allowed the user to go in to their,  photos or pictures or videos or music or documents or phone contacts folders and if the user wished to share all of those items in that particular folder to another phone device with Bluetooth or a computer with Bluetooth, or to delete all of the items in one go within that folder, then the user would not need to manually click on each item within that folder, which is time consuming especially if there may be in excess of one hundred items in each folder or more than one hundred phone contacts within the contacts folder, where the user needs to now manually click on each item using the "Select More" feature that is the available feature on the BlackBerry 10 operating system and is very time consuming.
But within the BlackBerry 7 operating system there is the feature and function that is called   "SELECT ALL"
This feature allows the user to "select all" of the individual items within the folder of their choice or the phone contacts folder, with just one click and be able to either delete all of these items or to share transfer all of these items to another device or computer that has Bluetooth.
Can BlackBerry bring this feature to the BlackBerry 10 operating system as an update as soon as possible ?
The next feature and function that was on the BlackBerry 7 operating system but was deliberately not included in the BlackBerry 10 operating system is the >
Remote Back Up   and   Remote Restore     on the  BlackBerry Protect.
This cloud back up and restore feature was vital and in the history of BlackBerry with Blackberry's advanced encryption and security, this cloud back up and restore feature was always safe and the security and protection of data being backed up and restored to and from Blackberry's cloud has NEVER been compromised or hacked or accessed in any way what so ever by anyone. And this made Blackberry's reputation for security number one and gave the loyal BlackBerry customers even more confidence in the BlackBerry product.
Now I will go in to detail why it is vital that BlackBerry must include and introduce this feature that is available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system but it is not available on the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Firstly, the current BlackBerry protect that is available on the BlackBerry 10, has some lovely fancy features, such as remote locating of the phone and remote wiping of the phone, should it ever be lost or stolen.
The fact is, this is a good feature, but if the phone was lost forever or indeed stolen, then that's it, the device data is also lost forever and the only data that would be accessible to restore on to a new BlackBerry 10 operating system device, would be what ever the last back up that was available that was made using BlackBerry Link on the computer.
Now, doing a phone back up on BlackBerry Link on the computer, is all very well and good, but there are many limitations to this.
    Firstly,
if the owner of a BlackBerry 10 operating system device was to be at home or in the office and connect their BlackBerry 10 device to their computer to BlackBerry Link and do a full device Back Up. Then that device is now only Backed Up at that point and is only Backed Up to date at that moment.
Now imagine after that Back Up was made, the computer in which BlackBerry Link is installed on and the Back Up was made, imagine the situation where that computer broke and all the saved data was lost or destroyed for ever or that computer that had the BlackBerry Link backed up data was stolen and never recovered ? Then everything that was backed up from the BlackBerry 10 operating system device to that particular computer using BlackBerry Link, would now be lost for ever. Which means that the Back Up that was made using BlackBerry Link is pointless in this above situation.
    Second Example,
This next example is even more realistic and is vital in my argument for the Remote Back Up and Remote Restore.
Imagine for example it is a day that you decide to do a full phone Back Up of your BlackBerry 10 operating system device on your computer using BlackBerry Link. Everything is now Backed Up only on that computer and is only up to date at that moment.
Then later that day, you need to travel to another town or city or state or country, for what ever reason and you may be away for a day or several days or weeks.
While you are away, the computer that you used to make the last full Back Up using BlackBerry Link, is at your home or in your office, hundreds or thousands of miles away from where you are with your BlackBerry 10 device.
While you are away, you input new contact details or new calendar schedule entries or new memo notes or new reminders or all of these above vital entries in to your phone.
You do this the next day when you leave and then throughout your business or personal vacation, you continue to input vital information in to your BlackBerry 10 operating system device, such as new contacts, new or amended calendar entries, new memos, new tasks. All the vital information that you need stored safely and secure.
Then your BlackBerry 10 operating system device is either lost or destroyed or stolen. But whichever, it is now gone for ever and all of the NEW vital information that you have in putted in to your BlackBerry 10 operating system device since the last full Back Up that was made using BlackBerry Link on the computer that is hundreds or thousands of miles away, has now been lost for ever.
What is the point in in putting any new data or information in to your BlackBerry 10 device if a situation as mentioned above was to happen ?
Where is the benefit of only the BlackBerry Link Back Up in this above situation ?
Now if the device was a BlackBerry 7 operating system device such as the BlackBerry Bold 9900, then if the above situation was to happen, if you was away from your home or office since the last full Back Up of your device was made on a computer.
If you were hundreds or thousands of miles away and whilst you was away on vacation you need entered new contact details or new memos or new reminders or new calendar entries or amendments in to your BlackBerry 7 device. Then you can immediately after in putting these new items of information and data in to your BlackBerry 7 device, you can do a Remote Back Up  to the BlackBerry Cloud   using any connected wireless network or your mobile phone network using your data that is on your sim card to do this Remote Back Up.
Then if after this Remote Back Up was done, if the BlackBerry 7 device was lost or stolen or destroyed, then you could simply go and purchase another BlackBerry 7 operating system device and input your primary email address that was used to register the previous BlackBerry 7 device, in to the new BlackBerry 7 device and then once set up, then open up BlackBerry Protect and click on Restore and select the last saved cloud Back Up and then all of the data that you last Backed Up over BlackBerry Protect Cloud is now installed on to your newly purchased BlackBerry 7 operating system device.
This was a vital feature for total security and peace of mind of all BlackBerry users.
All BlackBerry users do NOT want to download any third party application that makes claims to offering this service as any third party application is NOT reliable and NOT safe and NOT secure.
Only the Remote Back Up and Remote Restore on the BlackBerry cloud that is available on BlackBerry Protect on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, is the only proved secure cloud back up for BlackBerry and actually works precisely and is totally safe and secure.
So I now ask the question to BlackBerry,
Why is this vital  Remote Back Up and Remote Restore feature of BlackBerry Protect that is available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, is not on the BlackBerry 10 operating system ?
Will BlackBerry please listen to its loyal customers and please introduce the two above mentioned features as an update to the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
These above two mentioned functions and features are vital and it's what millions of loyal BlackBerry customers want installed on their BlackBerry 10 devices.
Please can someone at BlackBerry please come back to me and tell me if these above two features will be introduced to the BlackBerry 10 operating system as an update or download ?  As its what we all want back.
    Thank You.

Ditto on both points. Meanwhile I use the solution of a third party backup.

  • Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky after resintall of operating system and CS5

PROBLEM: Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky
This had NOT been an issue prior to reinstalling the operating system and all software.  I have read numerous articles on the forums and have tried everything I can find...with no results.
STEPS TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM:
I have scoured the articles here http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=choppy%20video&cat=support&pr oduct=premierepro and others at Cretive Cow
I have installed all updates for CS5 Master Collection, immediately following a fresh install of the operating system and SC5 Master Collection.
I have ensured that sequence settings match resolution and frame rates of footage - the problem persists.
I have tested by importing both standard def AVI files created from tape and high def SONY MP4 files - the problem persists.
I have ensured the latest Video drivers are installed (clean installation selected, so that the Windows default would be removed) - the problem persists.
I have tried the 3D settings in NVIDIA control panel | Program Settings tab... selected Adobe Premiere Pro from the drop down menu | and chaged 'Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration from the value of 'Multiple Display performance' to the value of 'single display performance'; although, I ran two monitors before using this latest NVIDIA video driver and I didn't experience this jerky footage issue - the problem persisted after affecting that change; so, I switched it back.
Since I have 96 GB of RAM, I don't use a pagefile.  A zero MB page file is the same setting I had prior to rebuilding the C:  Regardless of whether I have a pagefile or not, the problem persists.
I have tried creating a fresh user profile, where the user profile is created on the C: drive by default; and, where I left it there on C: to test for the jerky playback in a new PrPR project  - the problem persists.
Regarding the C: (system drive) and why I reinstalled everything, it had become unstable and was locking up.  I ran DISK ERROR CHECKING with the FIX parameter and the system was still locking up on me.  Keep in mind that the System drive is a solid state drive.  Anyhow, I had no choice but to dive in and reinstall everything.  I wiped the system partition of the SSD using quick format and started installing the operating system.  Now, I've read the CLAIM that this cuases performance issues; but, the only place I see issues is in the video monitor playback in PrPr.  Everything else - Office applications...printing...browsing the Internet...works just fine, everything is responsive, whereas, I couldn't do ANYTHING with it before.
    SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:
The Operating system and all software is installed on C:

OK, I am hoping that through this week-long Operating-System-and-Software-reinatalltion excerise of mine, I have revealed something that everyone -- whom have been cursing Adobe over -- can apply to their systems to resolve this jerky video problem within PremierePro CS5 (and quite possibly other versions, too).
If you've read my post above, you've seen all the steps I've taken to resolve the problem.  I've read many posts, some of which have mentioned  hardware upgrade / opitmization steps that one may take to enhance performance, and hopefully resolve the problem.  I've read where people have taken these steps and have still experienced the problem...and then they curse Adobe.  Fer-shame, fer-shame, fer-shame! (nod to Gomer Pyle).
In my case, I knew it wasn't an Adobe issue, as it had worked flawlessly before; and, it wouldn't require a hardware upgrade or reconfigureation, as my system is completely maxed out with two processors, a system drive and a hardware RAID5 array, a CUDA-suported nVIDIA 4800 FX card, and 96 GB of RAM.  bla bla bla, puke...whatever.  Bottom line is this:
It's not a software issue.  It's not and Adobe issue; and Gawd no!  It's NOT a PC vs. Mac issue!  HA HA.  The software had worked swimmingly well prior to the reinstallation / 'lobotomy' I perfomed on the system drive.
    SOLUTION FOR ME:
Download and install the updated drivers for the motherboard.  Mine is an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC.  Intel has an INTEL DRIVER UPDATE UTILITY which automatically scaned my Intel system and identified drivers which needed updating.  A very handy, time-saving tool!!!  Here's the URL: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu
The scan revealed two Intel drivers needing an update:
    Intel Chipset
    Wired Networking
    and one non-intel driver:
    Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-fi
I downloaded and installed these three drivers, rebooted, and tested PremierePro, and was extatic to find this resolved the problem.
If you have a motherboard from another manufacturer, then you may want to navigate over to their wibsite to locate chipset and other updated drivers for your motherboard.
    ROOT CAUSE:
While Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate was able to install certain default drivers during the Operating System installation (keeping in mind that this was done on an Intel Solid State Drive that I formatted using Quick Format) these default chipset drivers apparently weren't current and were ultimately the root cuase of the jerky video playback within PremierePro CS5.
    Peace

  • A60-155: Operating system will not boot.

I have a TOSHIBA A60-155. when i turn on the laptop it willnot load the operating system, i have read the manual and apparently it is failing the self test i have tried selecting all start up modes but nothing will work. I have not yet tried any Recovery cd's. The problem started after i pressed the power off because the computer froze. Does anybody have the solution to this problem???
I would also like to know what BIOS is and do i have to upgrade it? my laptop is about six months old.

    Hi Ben,
Firstly, you should not need to update your BIOS if your notebook is only a few months old.
Secondly, The start sequence of your notebook is a three stage process :-
    1. The POST will check the functionality of your attached peripheral resources, HDD DVD etc.
    2. The BIOS will then load and deal with the allocation of RAM etc and also initialise the basic system functions of your notebook.
    3. The BIOS will read the Master Boot Record to ascertain what operating systems you have installed and will then either load the required system or give you a menu of possible options from which you can choose.
If you press the ESC key as soon as the power on process starts you should see the results of the first two steps (The POST and the initial BIOS load).
The fact that you see the selection menu offering the choice of load types (i.e. Safe Mode etc.) would suggest that your system cannot load your operating system from the hard drive. The fact that none of the available options work indicates that there is a basic problem with your hard drive.
If you have a bootable CD then I would suggest that you try to boot your system from the CD (Press and hold the F12 key during the initial power on sequence and then select your CD drive from the list).
Alternatively you could restore your OS from the recovery CDs but this will format your hard drive resulting in the loss of your data.

  • Adding a Linux Operating System To the HP computeers with Windows 8.1

In Feb this year, I purchased an HP Envy 700-216 computer which came with Windows 8.1 installed. As everyone is now finally realizing, even Microsoft, Windows 8 and 8.1 sucks and is shortly going to be replaced and made obsolete!! I knew this when I purchased the computer, but no one could tell me how to add a Linux operating system to it, including the technicians at Ofice depot and the ones at HP support. We could get the HDD partitioned, but the BIOS always reset when the computer was rebooted. .
I finally figured it out on my own which required quite a bit of research. This information ought to be available via HP support (It was not!!!).
Briefly, I had to go into the BIOS and then download my Linux distro of choice (Linux Mint Debian Edition) which provides a very easy to operate partitioning system. I allowed only 500 Gigs of space for the Windows OS leaving the rest of the 2 TiB drive for my Linux Distro. . Then I downloaded and installed reFind, a freebie which allows the easy selection and setting of the preferred operating system.
If anyone else would like to know how to do this, please contact me and I'll try to walk you through it.

Never mind, I think I hacked up my own solution to the question:
    USE [VirtualManagerDB]
    GO
    INSERT INTO [dbo].[tbl_IL_OS]
    ([OSId]
    ,[Name]
    ,[Description]
    ,[Architecture]
    ,[OSFlags]
    ,[VMWareGuestId]
    ,[OSType])
    VALUES
    ('EBAB54C0-A9FA-4A3F-A21C-94775B96A6E5' /* Generate UUID */
    ,'Debian GNU/Linux 6 (64-bit)' /* Limited to 64 Chars */
    ,'Debian GNU/Linux 6 (64-bit)' /* Longer description of Linux Distro */
    ,'amd64' /* Use x86 for i386, amd64 for x86_64 */
    ,'28' /* This remains constant */
,'otherLinux64Guest' /* This is meant for VMware, go lookup the VMX spec files for this value */
,'1') /* Leave this at one, that's what the other OSes looked like */
    GO
All posted advice may not be all that accurate. As always, test it in a lab before you try my advice! Best of all, the documentation is your friend.

  • Can I upgrade my Macbook Pro to the newest operating systems?

My Macbook Pro is currently running Mac OSX 10.6.8 and never had snow leopard installed. I was wondering if my system would even be able to run the newest operating system.
Second I was wondering if it is even worth upgrading to. I have had a lot of trouble with my system freezing up and didnt know if a software update could help this problem out.

    10.6.8 is Snow Leopard.
Depending what model your MBP is, it might not be a wise choice to bloat it with 10.7 or 10.8, especally since it won't run any PPC based software or hardware drivers your using.
Apple Menu > About this Mac > more information should show a model number like "MacBook Pro 4,1"
then download and install MacTracker, punch that in to find your machine and the latest OS X version you can run.
If your machine originally came with 10.5, I serious suggest you stick with 10.6.8

Upgrading to a newer OS X version won't likely cure your problems, just create more.

  • RZ20 server host entries disappear under Operating System Node

    Hi,
I am trying to setup auto reaction methods in RZ21 and want to assign them to properties in RZ20 on SolMan (as my CEN) under
    Operating System -> <server host> -> filesystems -> <file path of choice> -> Percentage_Used
for the percentage_used i assign an auto reaction method and save it. Now it seems for some bizarre reason, some of the server hosts entries under Operating Systems disappear at the next auto refresh and reappear and i lose my assigned auto reaction methods, which means i have to redo it again.
does anyone else have or had this problem and have a solution for this?
your help would be much appreciated.
    Mani

I would not encourage using root user.
Your oracle user may not have the correct permissions. You need to ensure that oracle is in the required OS group and have the required privileges and file persmissions. Ensure that root.sh was run during your install.
If you check the corresponding trace files under
$ORACLE_HOME/sysman/log/ you may find more detailed message.

  • Conflicting Operating systems - How to Uninstall

I am having major problems. Here's my question:
Currently when I go to STARTUP DISK, I have the following choices:
Mac 10.4.3 on Mac HD (my boot drive)
    Mac 10.2.5 on Mac HD1
    Mac 10.3.9 on Mac HD2
    Mac 9.2.2 on Mac HD2
    Mac 9.2.2 on Mac HD
I would like to just use 10.4.3. How do I unistall the other operating systems? To complicate matters even more, I have Final Cut Pro 4 and I want to put this on its own boot drive. Do I have to partition one of my hard drives? Can't I use the FCP program to boot my system from? I think I have many cconflicts which is why my system is sluggish. Also, what if I just wanted to re-intsall 10.2 and start over? Goven that FCP 4 uses QT 6.4 or later, I don't think I can do that. Correct? I have many more questions but will start here. Thanks a lot.
Dual 1 GHz Power PC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You partition it. I have mine partitioned so that I can run various OSs, similar to your situation. But, I also have duplicates on another internal HD and backups on an external FWHD, so that I can use one for day-to-day use and another for beta-testing software. If anything screws up the test volume, I just erase it, clone another copy to it, and I'm back in business. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html for details.
