Operator ++ on Character?

Question

I have to make an excerise for school,
program is supposes to Keep count of the times a character has been typed in a string.
i'm realy stuck on the part where i have to count the chars
can somebody help me out please
so here is my code so far

is there way to avoid 26 counters?Yes. Each letter you get check the map for an existing entry. If there is one, then add one to it and overwrite. If not simply store "1" against the letter. And use a TreeMap, that way your results automatically come out in alphabetical order.
