Opinion on quality of 262k colours? :S

&Hi!
Related to my previous posts, another final issue that's confronting me with my decision to purchase the X-Fi 2 is the 3 inch 262k colour screen. Considering many higher-grade players these days have 6.7 million colours, does the 262k color screen detract a lot from video viewing quality?
Thanks in advance,
justin

*Re: Opinion on quality of 262k colours? :Slpost edited.
Sorry, I was wrong about the Vision having 6.7 million colours. It's actually 262k, just like the X-Fi2. So the colours aren't the reason why the Vision looked better. I guess it's just a different technology, maybe the X-Fi2's screen is cheaper.
I do miss a bit of the?mesmerizing video experience I sometimes had with my Vision, but that is probably just due to the lower resolution I have now.. and perhaps some other display-techniques I don't know about. It was just a different screen.
With some videos you might notice that the colours could be richer, but after a while you don't see that anymore.
About your other question: The X-Fi2 has an option called SmartVolume to normalize the sound. If I recall correctly the Visions have that too, so you might already be familiar with that.

  • The display of my MacBookPro Penryn is 262k colours! Dithering! Terrible!

Hi everyone! My name is Marco and I'm a new mac user from Italy... 30 days ago I bought a new Penryn MacBookPro 2.5 Ghz 15" matte in order to use it for my photographic work... today I was using it to open some nefs taken with my Nikon D300... macro shots... In the backgroud of my photos I found no smooth colors but pixelation... In order to compare the result I opened the photos with my Eizo Lcd with my pc and there weren't problems... Unbelievable, the same photo on my Eizo Lcd or on the Lcd of my 6years old Compaq Laptop looks better and "normal"... the green background has smooth changes of colour... in my MacBookPro seems a "stair"
So going round on the net I found the problem with MacbookPro's dispalys, colorblindmac... ecc... I downloaded SwitchResX and I found the 2 product codes:

All MBP display panels are 6 bit.
AUO, CMO, LG and SAMSUNG. All of them can handle only 256.000 colors.

  • Photo to PDF - Quality of PDF colour output

    Hi!
Does anyone know of an photo to PDF app where you can alter the quality colour output of images converted? Like if you have an image of 2 MB for example, can you choose the output PDF-page to be of 0,5 MB, but still with colour?

The only method I am aware of to reduce the size of a photo and still retain color is to reduce the size (pixels) of the photo with a photo handling software. As in change a  1024x768 photo to 600x800. That will reduce the size. You can also change it to a jpeg, which will compress it, and then run it through whatever software you are using to convert to a pdf.

  • Quality of pdfs and colour separations for printing purposes

Having created a 44 page document in Pages, I have exported it as a pdf file so that it can be commercially printed as an A5 magazine. I have used the 'best' option in exporting it as a pdf, but have no idea if that function conforms to PDF-X1A specifications. Is there any documentation that would define the pdf standards within Pages?
The magazine is going to be two colour (headers/footers/callouts etc to be blue). So would the Print: ColorSync (then save as a pdf) option solve the problem that one printer noted:
"I have looked at the pdf you have sent and all seems ok with the quality but the colours don't split to the two separations (i.e blue and black) only CMYK (which is for 4 colour printing). If this does become a print job then we might have to look and see if we can get the pdf's to be the correct colour split."
And would this also ensure that the black is a true black and not a CMYK mixture that might not print correctly in the end?

Yes, this possibly could be a solution, but I did not want to have to buy another piece of software (ie Adobe Acrobat) to produce the newsletter. I like the control that I have over the magazine layout in Pages, but need to be able to ensure that the pdf file I create is of the appropriate quality. Exporting to 'Best' is probably okay, but as I am viewing the pdf using Preview I have little idea how the pdf will look to others. I have read posts that have had problems with the quality of the pdfs exported from Pages when opened with a Windows machine or using Acrobat, so I am trying to ensure that I don't experience similar problems.

  • Calendar Quality - My Opinion

While I have ordered a number of iPhoto books the last two years or so, today I received my first Calendar order.
I am very impressed. The quality of the colour, print, and overall set-up (this Calendar will be a Christmas gift for a relative in the U.K.) including the fact that I selected the British "version" of holidays, etc., this Calendar is better than I expected.
Even though I would have liked to have had a slightly larger version, nevertheless, I would still give it 9.5 out of 10.

One question, how big is it? In iPhoto it says 10"x8" - is that the size of each page, or of the whole calendar when opened up?

  • How can I keep the quality of an MP4 video high when I export an interactive PDF from InDesign?

I am making an Interactive PDF with embedded MP4 video using InDesign.  When I view the video in the PDF it has degraded the quality and the colour contrast is poorly affected.  I can have the video as a floating window but this gives a harsh black line around the video when it plays which is not acceptable.
Can anyone advise how to maintain the quality of the original video when it is embedded?

You can control the quality of the video (aspect ratio, pixel dimensions, frames/minute, etc.) by using the Adobe Media Encoder which comes with InDesign CS5 or later installations, including InDesign CC. InDesign only includes what you have placed and passes it on to the PDF file. There are no video quality controls in InDesign.
You cannot change the way Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader displays the MP4. If you don't like the way Acrobat/Reader handles display of a floating window, then you'll have to display it within the page. For more info, inquire in the Rich Media Acrobat forum.

  • PDFing Spot Colour Transparencies from Indesign CS2

    Hello!,
I think this is a common question, but I can't find a definitive answer. I am trying to PDF a file which has an image and then a spot colour transparency over part of it. When I PDF the file at Press Quality the spot colour transparency is white. When I PDF the file at a lower resolution (Standard size PDF) the transparency is fine.
Is there some way I can resolve this? I need to prepare a Press Quality File. I seem to recall reading or hearing somewhere that Indesign does not deal with spot colour transparency very well. I am currently working in CS2, and am wondering if the issue has been resolved in newer versions of Indesign.
Many thanks for your help, all,
    Pepi

    > that Indesign does not deal with spot colour transparency very well
    Nonsense.
Just turn on Overprint Preview in Acrobat.

  • Does HDV improve SD/DVD quality

    Hallo,
I want to switch to HDV for personal use only, but can't affort to buy a HDV camera and big HD television at the same time. So I have to decide wich one to buy first. So there are some questions maybe someone can answer.
So far I have been recording DV 4:3 PAL with a Canon MVX2i and a Panasonic GS400 and I have been happy with the results. Last year I have made some recordings in 16:9 but in my opinion the quality with both cameras is not very good, esspecially with shots where the camera is not really stable. The picture seem to fall apart a little. I do realize the pixels are streched and with the same amount of pixels it can't have the same quality as 4:3. But on (cable) television there is sometimes a broadcast that doesn't seem to have this "falling apart" effect ( a lot do ) while it uses the same mpeg (720x540) stream as the others.
So my first question: If I buy one of the cheap Canon or Sony HDV cameras and shoot HDV 16:9 footage, edit as HDV and convert it straight to mpeg2 for a regular DVD with compressor, would this give me a noticable quality improvement compared to DV 16:9 to DVD? It doesn't have to be more sharp but does it give a more solid picture?
Second question: Does above workflow decreases the effect of those bend, moving lines you see on for instant brick walls while the camera is moving slightly, because of the lines of the chips and the wall interferance?
Third and last question: Somewhere (I can't find it anymore) in this forum I read something about more artifacts around moving objects in HDV like in low rate mpeg compared to DV. Is this true?
    Thank you for your respons.

So my first question: If I buy one of the cheap Canon
or Sony HDV cameras and shoot HDV 16:9 footage, edit
as HDV and convert it straight to mpeg2 for a regular
DVD with compressor, would this give me a noticable
quality improvement compared to DV 16:9 to DVD?
Absolutely not, assuming you are comparing good quality cameras of either format. HDV has a noisier compression scheme, and you will also lose definition (compared to starting SD) when you scale the HDV down for the DVD.
You will get somewhat more definition horizontally with HDV compared to anamorphic SD, but only if the SD is displayed anamorphically rather than letterbox. I think you would notice other problems before you would notice this improvement.
It doesn't have to be more sharp but does it give a more
    solid picture?
No. Again look at the quality of your SD camera.
Second question: Does above workflow decreases the
effect of those bend, moving lines you see on for
instant brick walls while the camera is moving
slightly, because of the lines of the chips and the
    wall interferance?
It would tend to increase that effect, which again with a decent camera is almost non-existent.
Third and last question: Somewhere (I can't find it
anymore) in this forum I read something about more
artifacts around moving objects in HDV like in low
rate mpeg compared to DV. Is this true?
Yes, HDV has motion artifacts from interframe compression, and DV doesn't. DV does have compression artifacts but all compression occurs within each frame.
If you do go HDV, be sure you understand the effect it will have on your ability to capture, edit, to monitor, to work with any particular camera or flavor of HDV. It is never a simple out-of-the-box solution and often requires more $$ than one thought.
Don't get me wrong here: HDV has lots of promise and can be very useful and improve quality in many situations. But for SD-only output it isn't going to help and will most likely hurt.

  • Inconsistent keyboard backlighting: quality control oversight or design issue?

I'm on my second MBA in two weeks--the first unit was returned because of a noisy hinge.  On both machines I noticed that one of the lighted keys are dimmer than others.  The left Command key is dimmer than the right.  I noticed a similar problem with my first machine except it was the Option keys.  Again, left key slightly dimmer than the right.
Just curious if there's anyone out there who just bought a new MBA who can report the same.  Is this a quality control oversight or a design problem...
I likely won't return this one because of this minor oversight, but my opinion about quality control is this: if you can't get the little things right, how can we be confident you got the big things right.  Glad I purchased Apple Care.

I know what you mean about quality control. However, you may want to try two things before you return it:
    1. Rub around the dead pixel. Google this method and you'll find more details. Sometimes the pixels can be restored to life.
    2. Put a small piece, or layered pieces, of electrical tape in the battery slot to fill in the gap. I've often done this with my apple laptops and it works perfectly. Once, when I was at the genius bar, the genius commented " Oh, good that you put the tape there and not over here like a lot of people do..." indicating that this is very common.
Should you have to? No, of course not! But if your computer is otherwise good, I would definitely try these potential solutions.
I'm afraid this is what quality control has come to. It's the same throughout the electronics industry and apple is no exception. The only company I've never had an issue with is Sony, but maybe I've just been lucky?

  • BEST QUALITY (AME OR DIRECT EXPORT)

    Hi,
What is the best method of exporting files for the best overall quality:
I am using two formats SD & HD,
    for SD (DVCAM 16x9 Pal)
    for HD (XDCAM EX)
also if I have maximum depth and maximum render quality to ON, will this make a noticable difference to the footage.
at the moment I am exporting to MPEG-2 DVD,
    Baz

    Baz,
Maximum bit depth only helps if your source material was 4:2:2 to start with or when you do a lot of keying, but usually it is only sensible with AJA or BM cards, that support HD-SDI. AFAIK MPEG2-dVD is only 8 bpc, so the only effect is to lengthen the encoding process.
MRQ is very sensible if you do not use hardware MPE but software. Hardware MPE always uses maximum quality and linear colour, except for some special situations. If you use MRQ while using MPE, and there is no lengthening of the encoding time, those special situations do not apply, but it does not hurt. If there is a lengthening of encoding times with MPE on, then you will benefit in quality, for instance with nested sequences.

I have nokia x6 8gb.i think i am having some problem with the captured image quality.
Before taking snap, when i see images through camera viewfinder, the images are rich in colour and perfect contrast. But after capturing image, the image quality changes;the colour depth reduces and image becomes little whitish.there is a markable difference between the actual object and captured object when taking indoor pictures.1st the settings were set to auto.then i changed settings to different mode, but the same happens. Is it a problem with all nokia handsets or there is any optimized setting?please help me...

You can check for updates by connecting your phone to PC using USb and Ovi suite.. Then select software update in the Ovi suite menu.. If any available it will prompt you.. You may then follow the instructions on screen.. But Back-up before this is must as you will have to re-install / restore applications and other details that are in the phone memory..

  • ZXR Mic quality

I'm led to believe the Z and the ZX have issues with the mic where it's hard to hear without boost, low quality with "Noise Reduction" on, or with boost on and NR off, full of distracting static. I'm getting the same issue with my ZXR - can someone confirm whether this is normal?

Hello, TM. In my opinion, the quality of the GarageBand podcast sound you hear is likely far more effected by the quality of the external speakers you use with your PowerBook than which mic you choose. Moreover, I doubt that any $10 mic would come close to the sound quality of iSight's internal mic.
In my experience, the external iSight's mic works fine with GarageBand 3 Set the GarageBand > Preferences... > Audio/MIDI > Audio Input: Choices Bar to "iSight" and give it a try. (External iSights must be plugged in to see the "iSight" choice in the Choices Bar.)
Audio professionals or those who do not have any interest in iSight's camera section may find a separate or professional quality microphone appealing, but if you already have an iSight, give your iSight's mic a try before spending money on an external mic only to be used for podcasting.

  • CS4 How to save a clip or a group of clips to use in another project ?

Hi guys, I am new here and I am new in this videoediting.
I find Premiere Pro fantastic to edit videos, it really is a program for PRO´s.
Because of that it has so many functions and options that it is hard for a beginner to find his way.
I have tried to find the answere to my question in the Help, here in this Forum and I have also two different Video tutorials but not lucky.
    Background:
I had 10 videotapes from a Sony handycam that I took in 1989-90 in NZ living there with my 2 small daughters for one year.
I have got the tapes transformed to DVD´s and I have no problem to read them and edit them in Pro CS4. But I want to make a couple of different videos for different audiences.
One DVD incl the whole trip, one short version and then I want to use just some clips for something totally diferent.
I put in a lot of effort to change the lightning and editing every clip very carefully. I just want to do this one time for every clip.
So how can I save the edited clips so I easily can open them up in different projects?
Probably a stupid question but no question - no answere!
I have been readinf quite a lot here in the different forums for Premiere and I am amazed how much knowledge there is here.
    Best regards
    Sven

I hope my question has not been answered yet, I hope to hear another solution to my problem.
    Problem again:
I have 10 movies in .vob format, each around 30 minutes.
I edit each movie and from the first one I got 19 clips and together 5 min 23 seconds.
Each clip I try to make better with better lights, better sound etc etc using video and audio efects. So I put a lot of work into each clip.
When I have edited all 10 movies I might have 200 clips and each clip is improved by using different video and movie effects.
Then I want to make 3 maybe 4 different movies from all the clips. For some clips I might want to change the effects depending on which movie it will be included in or for some other reason.
So I want to save each clip with the video and audio effects "open".
I have got some ideas from Alan and Ann and I have tested to Export from the Workarea.
So I want to report the results from my tests:
I have a clip 1 min 40 sec with many diiferent video effects.
Format: Quick time gives a .mov file and the size was 381 Mbyte. It took around 30 minutes
Format: Microsoft avi gives a .avi file and the size was also 381 Mbyte and took same time.
Format: H.264 gives a .mp4 file and the size is only 40 Mbytes but took same time.
Format: MPEG4 gives a .3gp file with size 2.2 Mbytes.
When you export to media you choose Format and Preset plus you have 100 other different parameters that you can change.
When you click OK Adobe Media Encoder starts up. Here you can change Format and Preset and you can also duplicate the order to make a new file and make files with different Formats.
.mov file, .avi file and .mp4 file gave in my opinion same quality but the 3gp file was very blurred. I could import all the 3 first formats into Premiere Pro CS4 BUT the video and audio effects were deleted. The effects had affected the new movies so that is kind of OK but I had hoped the new movies should contained the effectinformation so I could change the effect for each clip depending of which final movie it should be in.
The Premiere Pro CS4 is a fantastic tool and a user can taylor his own "clipboard" with his style and make and save his own tools (effects).
Maybe there is a function to save an original clip together with its video and audio effects so it easy can be used and reused.
I have learned a lot today and I hope someone else has found these posts interesting and wants to dig deeper into the subject.
    Thanks everyone!

  • HP 5550 Excess Black Ink Issue

    Hi,
I have an imac G5 running OSX 10.4 and an HP deskjet 5550 printer connected via USB that has started to basically put too much black ink on the page after changing cartridges so prints now smudge really badly. I thought the new cartridge was faulty so I changed it for another one but the same thing still happens. I think it might be a printer set up or driver issue as I have played with all the settings and it just about works if I choose draft print quality. The colours print fine as does printing when using a photo colour cartridge in place of the black ink one. I did a print recently on best quality so I was wondering if it was related to that? Also what driver or settings should I be using? Thanks for any ideas or advice as I'm fairly new to macs.

The brackets on the ink levels page are actually printed with a combination of color inks, they will print in what looks black even if black is not working.  I would suggest the troubleshooting steps in this document.  Be sure to check the vents.  If this does not resolve the issue the post here may help.
