Optical Drive Scratching my DVD on the right side

My DVD drive on my MacBook Pro 13.3 Mid 2010 model is catching on the right hand side as I insert a disk. This is putting a slight scratch on the right hand side of the disc that is inserted.
How can I fix this?

good news is a new Superdrive (internal) made by Panasonic only costs $40
You could watch an Ifixit.com video on replacing the Superdrive, ...its very easy, however I used to fix laptops, so my 'easy' maybe someone elses "hard".
In any respect, at worst, you could buy the Superdrive new on ebay or OWC and have a computer repair place install it for , who knows, somewhere around $40, $50
FIx it yourself depends on a LOT on what your skills are in such things. Of which I know nothing about that specifically.
In laptop parts replacement on a scale of 1 to 10, its about a 2 or a 3 (easy).
check you dont have something metal hanging in the loading bay of the superdrive, that felt lining you see. DONT stick anything inside, but just see if you see some foreign debris there scratching same.
otherwise the loader or internal tray of the superdrive is scratching your DVDs / disks.

Optical drive scratching new dvd's

I bought my macbook (black) back in June while on vacation and was able to watch a dvd on it in the airport on the way home. When I got home and watched another dvd I noticed it was scratched after watching it. I wasn't sure if it was already scratched or not, so I put in a new dvd and the macbook scratched it to the point it wasn't able to be read anymore. I took it in and they replaced the drive. Since then I have had another two disks get scratched, both of them new. I took it back in and had the drive replaced yet again. I just started watching another new movie and I heard a funny noise so I ejected the dvd. Again it was scratching the disk. I don't understand why this is happening. Any suggestions? (Yes I know I am a slow learner, but I keep hoping that a product this expensive won't eat dvd's.)
I don't know how many times apple is willing to replace an optical drive. Like I said, this is the third drive I am on. I have had my computer in the shop more than I have been able to use it!

I have heard that moving the laptop will make the scratching worse. I could accept that as the cause if I was actually moving the computer when it scratches the disks, but that has not been the case when mine have been scratched. I don't understand why it scratches in the first place. Cars have cd and dvd players in them all the time and they don't seem to have those problems.

Optical Drive not burning DVD's

I keep posting a similar discussion but nothing is working. I have this ASUS optical drive for burning DVDs. I was told it doesn't need to be installed because you only need to install it if it's windows. I've tried burning through the disc utility and through creating a new file and clicking burn "so and so" to a disc. After the burning is completed and I try putting it in a DVD player, it says "Unknown Disc" so I'm doing something wrong along the way.
The ASUS optical drive is Mac compatiable so that shouldn't be the problem.

Do you get this error message with all current burn attempts, or simply with your most recent project?
If not, a PRAM reset has been known to be helpful.

Optical drive scratching media

My optical drive scratches anything put into it....I'm about to have it replaced under Applecare, but one of my CDs won't even play now....Anyone else had this problem and should I be making a claim?

eww - if you were smarter you'd have considered the possibility that I use CDs in more than one player...and don't check my CDs every time I use them. Only after several months did I check one CD to find the abrasions and put it down to using in an old CD player. It was only when I looked at a CD Rom did I realise the problem was caused by the MBP...by then a lot of CDs had been affected.

Recently replaced optical drive with SSD and stripped the screw of the hinge on the optical drive. Now speaker is muffled

I still have the hinge but its not on the enclosure for the ssd. Now my speaker on the right side is muffled. Do I need a replacement bracket or is my problem unrelated?

It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
What 'hinge ' are you referring to? I am unaware of any hinges on an optical drive.
Look at the iFixit.com website for pictorial instructions that may assist you with your problem.

Colored band on the right side of the DVD encoder

When a project renders in Media encoder to get a file mpeg DVD 25p, in some places a vertical band appears on the right side, sometimes blue, sometimes red or white.

They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

My Macbook Pro Retina's USB port on the right side not working at all

I received my macbook pro 15inch with retina display a week ago, but not until today had I got the chance to use the USB port on the right side, only to find out that it is not connecting to anything at all. I have tried to use my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 with two different cables, my USB thumb drive, and my Blackberry 9900, none of them are charging nor shown in iTunes/Finder. All of above works on the left and on other windows machines too.
I'm also not able to charge my Blackberry with the usb port on the left side, thought it would pop up a message saying "charging not supported" on the phone.
For you information, I have applied both updates including the one released few days ago. I have also tried to reset the PRAM. Also, I have migrated from my old late 2008 13inch unibody Macbook using Migration Assistant, not sure if this would affect anything.
I'm aware that there have been reports and discussions regarding the USB port not been able to run devices on 3.0 speed, but I wonder if anyone else have the same problem with me, where the port simply not connecting to anything at all?

I also have a problem with the USB port on the right side of my Retina MBP. The USB3.0 port on the left side works fine, even with high speed external SSD enclosures, like the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G which enables me to copy large files at a sustained rate of 160-170MB/sec. Wow USB3.0 and the Mercury SSD is a FAAAAST combination connected to the Retina MBP.
However, like the forum entries about the USB3.0 ports in general on the new Retina MBP, the USB3.0 port on the RIGHT side is plagued with dropping intermittently, disconnecting my external hard drives while copying large files AS WELL AS disconnecting while just sitting there connected to an external hard drive and doing nothing.
Therefore, since I don't feel like returning my Retina MBP and waiting weeks for a replacement, I have chosen to only use the left side USB3.0 port for now.
I have my suspicions about why the right side USB port might be more problematic than the left side one. I found this older post on the internet about how "Not all USB ports are created equal on MacBooks..." that talks about how on older models of MacBooks one of the USB ports shares a USB hub with multiple other devices like the iSight camera etc. therefore making it less tolerant of heavy traffic or something like that. Therefore, I wonder if the right side USB port is sharing a USB internal hub where-as the left side one is more 'dedicated' and therefore in my case able to handle the high speed transfers/traffic I am throwing at it with my external SSDs.
I have also read that USB3.0 in general, on non-Macs, has had trouble for years. For instance, some forum entries on Apple Support Communities and other non-Apple forums has made mention that 'they' are not surprised at the problems encountered on USB3.0 external hard drives connected to the Retina MBP because Windows laptops have had a lot of flakey problems with USB3.0 for 'years'.
Also, I have recently purchased a "Buffalo" external Thunderbolt 1TB drive from OWC and have been doing Clones onto that drive for several weeks. I use SuperDuper to clone >600GB of data on my 768GB Retina MBP several times a week. And, I have (knock on wood) not had any problems with the stability of my externally connected Thunderbolt drive.
So, in my case, I am racking it up to high-speed stresses on the USB3.0 ports at least in part...and perhaps the possibility that the LEFT side USB port on the Retina MBP is more dependable and/or a more dedicated USB port than the right side one.
This doesn't really solve your problem, but it may at least help you feel like you are not alone.

My macbook keeps freezing with the left side of the screen on the right and the right side of the screen on the left. Help

My 17-inch early 2011 macbook pro keeps freezing on me. The freeze usually occurs when I'm importing or exporting pictures, when I stream anything, or If I am watching a dvd. The left side of the screen shifts to the right and the right side of the screen shifts to the left. lines also appear on my screen and I can not force quit any open application. I have not dropped my laptop at all.

I would like to avoid going to the an apple store to fix this problem if possible. The closest one to me is 40 miles away.

If you don't have the Applecare extended warranty then you will need to pay for the fix. The fix is a New Logic Board. It seems as your Graphics card is failing in some way. No there is no software fix for this.
The Graphic chip is soldered to the logic board and the only way to change/fix it is to replace the complete logic board.

Why am I losing the right side of my frames?

I am working with video originally shot on handled camer with an SD card that has then been copied to a DVD. The VOB files are 720x480 and 29FPS. When I add the media I have tried several project pre-set settings, however all of them are cutting off the right side of the frame of the film and I need that for my clips and to make my movie. How do I get the entire frame to be imported and available?

A.T. Sorry about that, I was including them in the emails but didn't realize they weren't posting. Here are the steps I followed and the screenshots.
Changed settings to DV Standard
Checked “Force selected Project Setting on this project” and clicked OK
Went to add media and chose a file from the disk.
Below is how it appears on the monitor. As you can see, the right side is cut off as it should have the full date (To be clear, it is not just the date I am interested in, but the rest of that frame.
I confirmed that the magnification “Fit” was checked and went to Edit Preferences and there is a check next to default scale to frame size and none of that fixed the issue.

How can I align a character exactly flush with the right side of a text box?

I'd like to automatically align some text so it touches the right side of its text box exactly for all characters ("Optical Margin Alignment" doesn't work). Figure-1 shows the default behavior for right-aligned text. Figure-2 shows what I want it to look like. Since these characters are inputs from a large Data Merge, manually adjusting each instance is not a practical solution.
Selecting the "Align Left Edge" checkbox in "Drop Caps and Nested Styles" is exactly the kind of behavior I'm looking for, except it needs to be the "Right Edge" not the "Left Edge".

Olfar, I follow what you did with "Indent to Here" and the Hair Space, and I understand how to use tracking to manually align the second line, but I don't know much about grep styles, so I didn't follow that part. Does the technique you used work for all characters? For instance, if you replaced the "1" with a "7", would it automatically align the rightmost part of the "7" with the "N"? Also, I need something that works with double digit numbers, and I don't think the Hair-Space-and-Tracking trick is going to work in those cases, but I could be wrong.

Backup your files to a external hard drive and disconnect.
Call Apple and make a warranty call, then take it to the nearest Apple Store etc.
You can run these things and it might clear your issue or give further informaiton

Noise comming from the right side of my MBP

Hi, i have a new 2012 regular 15" mbp. I had the Retina at first, it was completely silent, but this macbook i can hear, especially the right side. Both fans are running at idle 2000RPM. Is this the 7200RPM hard drive making noise? Its not terribly loud, but compared to the Retina its definitely audible.
