ORA-12528 after each reboot

Howdy all.
I have Oracle 10g database Standard Edition installed on a Win2K Server machine. Each time I reboot the machine, the database does not fully open on its own. After a reboot, when I try to connect to the database using SQL*Plus, I get the following error:
ORA-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections.
I have waited a good bit - thinking that maybe the database is just starting up, and I still get the error after waiting a while (over 10 minutes).
I can use Enterprise Manager to perform a startup on the database. After I enter my credentials (OS and DB), I am told that the database is "currently in started state." I can shutdown, mount, or open the database. I choose open the database, the wait screen appears, and then after about a minute - the logon screen appears and then everything is OK. I can connect using SQL*Plus and I am happy.
Until I reboot the server again. My question is this -- how can I get the Oracle database to startup, mount, and open automatically? Is Oracle designed such that I have to open the database by hand each time I reboot the server?

Joel,
Thanks for responding quickly. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back. I have been pulled in a lot of directions and haven't been able to work on my Oracle DBA skills much recently.
I have found out what is causing my problem. I have edited my sqlnet.ora file. The file has two lines in it by default:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
I commented out the first line so it looks like the following:
#SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
When I do that, then the database will not open on its own after a reboot. Now, the reason I commented that line out in the sqlnet.ora file is to speed things up a bit.
When I leave the line in place (NOT commented out), and I start SQL*Plus - it takes about 25 - 30 seconds to connect the first time. If I comment the line out, it connects in less than a second.
How can I either make the database respond to connections quickly and still leave the line in place? Or, how can I have the database startup, mount, and open up all on its own with the line commented out?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am learning a lot in my quest to be a better Oracle DBA.

• [Solved] SB Live 5.1 Sound card changes after each reboot.

Hi
I have SB Live 5.1 soundcard that changes it's "location" after each upgrade, and I have to do the changes manually in the different applications: xmms, vlc, xine, etc in order to have sound back.
As you can imagine it's quite tediuos to do the changes everytime.
And videos, radio or music, can't be heard at all from internet.
Only when sound card is in hw: 0,0 no manually setups are not needed and sound in internet is ok.
This is the aplay -l output when is in hw: 0,0

Hi
Now it's solved following this link: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALSA
There found section: Set the default sound card
Where have to change file /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
options snd-emu10k1 index=0
and also in /etc/rc.conf disable modules of the other sound card:
MODULES=(!snd-via82xx)

• IPhone 4: Visual Voicemail asks to be 'set up now' after each reboot

Hello everyone,
Here is my recurring problem:
Every time I turn my iPhone 4 off and back on, the visual voicemail asks to be set up again (when I've done it over 10 times now!). I tried resetting the network settings, taking out the SIM, and even called my phone company. They said that the issue is from Apple and has nothing to do with cell phone reception or what not... They said they have gotten a lot of calls with this issue?
I am not sure if anyone else is having this problem...?
How do I fix this so I don't need to reset my voicemail everytime I reboot?!?!
Thank you in advance.

The fix:
Okay, I spoke with Apple Customer Support, and this is the detailed fix for the constant visual voicemail re-set after rebooting the iPhone (4). A warning though, it's going to use up a lot of your time!
1. Make sure that you've synched your iPhone, and have a computer back up (which includes all of your contacts, apps, email, photos, etc. - EVERYTHING.
2. Reset your iPhone 4 back to the factory default (this erases EVERYTHING from your iPhone). This is the "Restore" option found on the "Summary" tab in iTunes when your iPhone 4 is selected.
3. After step 2 is complete, when you are given the option to restore the iPhone either from a back-up, or start as a new iPhone, choose the new iPhone option (it's possible that your back-up has a "corruption" which lead to this problem).
4. Re-synch, and re-add all of your apps, movies, books, and photos, etc. You will have to redo any folders that you may have made (pain!).
5. You may have to update the phone's carrier settings (remember when you first got the phone?), by pressing a prompt on the phone if it tells you that a carrier update is available (download the update). The phone will also prompt you with the fact that it's now registered (with your carrier). This only takes a second (the shortest part of the whole process). Your visual voice mail should work. Your greeting may be set to "default", but if you choose "custom", your greeting should be there (push "play" to make sure). If not, then record a new one. My greeting was still there, and I didn't have to re-enter my password. All of my old messages were still there, too. Success!
6. You'll have to re-enter your wi-fi password in order to re-enable wi-fi.
7. You're done. It works. I've tested it, by restarting (re-booting) the iPhone 4 several times.
8. Go to bed, because it's late!
You're welcome!
-Mark.

• OOB White Screen Of Death: Silverlight Installation required after each reboot.

Hi,
we are getting White Screen Of Death on few user's machine for last few months and a number of users is getting added from last month for the same issue. Earlier we were using the CleanSilverlight from the following site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2608523.
Now we have the following issue that requires immediate fix:
Whenever we apply CleanSilverlight then my OOB starts working fine but it start displaying same white screen after few days without any action (Installation/Uninstallation)
Whenever the system reboots then we need to apply CleanSilverlight and install the Silverlight once again on user's machine to work with OOB. It seems rebooting interferes with OOB application.
Both of these issues are very frequent from last one month. I don't know if any update to windows/browser is the root cause for the issue.
One the system is having the following configuration to run OOB:
OS name and version: Windows 7 32-bit
Browser name & version: IE 8 & Google Chrome 38.0.2125.111 m
Silverlight version: 5.1.30514.0
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Regards, Maddy

Hi,
Clean the corrupted Silverlight installation and reinstall the Silverlight should fix the issue:
As mentioned above it does fix the issue but sometimes its not permanent solution, It just pop up once again.
I don't understand why should we downgrade the version of the Silverlight. Its working fine after applying CleanSilverlight
and reinstalling Silverlight.
There must be something that's corrupting it. vize Antivirus, any new update etc.
Also I would like to know why the Silverlight is getting corrupted at all. Why do we need to apply CleanSilverlight?
Still looking for a proper solution.
Regards,
Maddy

• Having to re-enable sharing on 2008R2 server after each reboot.

I have a 2008R2 EE server that has some foder shares located on a drive. We have an application that uses those shares but evertime the server reboots I have to go in and manually re-enable the sharing for the shares to reappear. Has anyone seen this before?

Hi,
The shared folders located on an iSCSI drive or a local drive? If it is an iSCSI drive, the issue due to lanman service start earlier than iSCSI service, and lanman service does not recognize the drive as ready ones. You can restart the lanman service after
all drives are ready.
Please also refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

• Hp-toolbox, need to "start printer" after each reboot

Hi,
I got a HP C4580 Wi-Fi printer. Everytime I boot I need to run hp-toolbox and go to Printer Control -> Start Printer. Can this be automated at boot? I also added myself to the group lp, but hp-toolbox still wants the root password for it to work.

• DB nonresponsive with ORA-12514 after weeks of running fine

I have seen many prior users complain about getting ORA-12514 after a reboot after installation, and looking at the suggestions, I couldn't find anything addressed a situation where the whole system works for a long period of time and then stops working.
I have a working APEX installation that I can access over the web from remote clients
I have a working JDBC connection that I can use from several remote clients.
After several weeks/months of happily running, I no longer can access the apex website, and I can no longer access the db through the JDBC connection getting:
ORA-12514, TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect
descriptor
The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
//###.###.###.###:1521/XE
Going to look at Windows services, both OracleServiceXE and OracleXETNSListener are still running. To try and recover, I do the following:
* Stop the db and start the db. (Which simply stops OracleServiceXE, and then starts both it and the listener)
Doesn't fix it
* Thinking that the listener might be the problem, I then stop the db, and also manually stop the listener. I then start both of the services
Doesn't fix it
* I reboot the computer
Fixes it.
What is different about rebooting the computer that could possibly fix this? Also, someone had suggested in another thread to look at the listener log in db_1/network/admin/listener.log. I don't know what db_1 is, but I have a oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN directory that does not have this log. If anyone has any insight into what this is, or what log I should look at to identify it, I would be greatly appreciative.
Thanks,
Dan

Thanks!
Ah, the alert log, that is a useful find. For those who don't know, you can find where the alert log is stored by doing the following:
select value from v$parameter where name = 'background_dump_dest';
I looked at the alert log, and i think it indicates that the process is running out of memory. Since it can run for a very long time without this, I'm assuming it's some kind of memory leak. Especially since I think the less I develop pages with APEX, the longer the system goes between crashing (That is only anecdotal). I looked at the .trc files that it spit out as well, but they seem to have internal stack traces and dumps. Where do I go from here? Is this something I post to an Oracle bug list? Below is the relevant section of the alert log:

• Workgroup setting won't stay after system reboot

Even though this issue was reported in 10.7, the issue still remains in 10.8.
Background:
I have a home network consisting of a iMac (2011) and two Windows 7 PCS connected to a Netgear Gigabit switch. I on occasion transfer files to and from my Mac and my Windows PCs.
Pre OSX Lion, This situation worked fine. But since Lion and now Mountain Lion I am no longer able to copy files to my Mac from my Windows Pcs. Copying files from my Mac to my Windows Pcs work fine. In troubleshooting this issue, I found out in the Network system preference option after selecting ethernet and then the advanced button, then clicking on the Wins tab, that the Netbois and Workgroup fields are blank. After providing a Netbois name and the workgroup name the same as the Windows Pcs, then selecting the OK button generally works. Sometimes I have to go in multiple times before it takes the information but once it does everything works as it suppose until I reboot or shutdown and startup. If I do either when I go back into the Network in the System Preferences the fields are blank again.
I've followed some of the suggestions from the other support documents but they did not work for me:
1. Deleting the com.apple.systemperference.plist file and .lockfile
2. Create a duplicate ethernet service add the necessary changes then make that ethernet service the active one after disabling the original one.
None of these worked. I submitted on Apple Feedback this issue when I was still running OSX 10.7.2 but it never was fixed and now Mountain Lion behaves the same way. I will be submitting once again in hopes someone at Apple pays attention.
It seems this issue has to do with the Apple inhouse developed SMB share implementation. When they was using the SAMBA software I had no issues.
I even did a clean install of Mountain Lion to make sure the problem would not be transferred from Lion. Didn't make a difference.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
That work around is great. A lot easier that typing in the info repeated before it takes just to have to do it again after the next reboot. If anyone has access to the Apple Bug Reporter, please add this bug for all of our sakes.
Two things.
1. After the initial ML install, the word workgroup was in the workgroup field. And that did not disappear after each reboot. Only when changing it to something else is when the problem manifests.
2. I wonder if the Macbook Air and The new Retina Macbook Pro has this same issue being that they too come with SSD styled storage. If anyone have these macs please reply with your findings.
Thanks
p.s. Again would really appreciate someone with Apple Bug Reporter access to log this issue. Thanks again

• Default printer resets at each reboot after installing Acrobat X Pro

I installed Acrobat X Pro yesterday, and updated it after the install to version 10.1.4.  Since that time my default printer has been reset after each computer reboot to the first physical printer on my printers list - an HP 5900 series.  I want my default printer to be my HP 6940, which is local, connected by USB, and have gone into Start/Printers and Faxes on my Windows XP Professional machine to do this.  But each time I reboot, the default is switched back to the HP 5900.  The printers have been installed on my machine for years with no issues, and I had Acrobat 9 Professional on my machine until yesterday - with no issues.  I tried live chat for help, but the representative told my it was a physical printer issue and I needed to contact HP.  Can you help me stop my computer from resetting the default printer each time it is shut down?
The order of printers listed on my machine:
Adobe PDF
HP 5900 Series
HP 6940
(several network printers listed below here)
Thanks!

• Need to restart iTunes after each CD import... what's up with that ?

Having an issue with my new Toshiba laptop, after bringing my library in from my HTPC(now gone) and finding atleast one song on each album cut short, i've decided to start from scratch and re-import my 350 odd CD collection.
But i'm having an issue... i start iTunes, import one CD, then go to do another and it either tells me there is no CD in the drive, or won't download any track names/album info etc. So after each CD i have to exit iTunes and then restart it. Sometimes have to reboot... what a nightmare that has turned into.
Any help would be very much appreciated
Thanks
Matt

Never mind... simply needed to autherise the new computer.

• PowerBook G4 hangs after install/reboot with Combo Mac OS X 10.5.8 update

I've got a Titanium PowerBook G4 1GHz. It had Mac OS X 10.5.4 installed.
Then I went to Software Update and it downloaded the Combo software 10.5.4 and after it rebooted, it is stuck at "Installing 2 items, Configuring installation."
You can see the progress bar pulsating but it's stuck and I dont hear any hard drive activity. I had to hard power down and got back in and did Software Update again and after it rebooted, same issue.
Whats up with that?

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Oracle 10G Db Starts-up After Server Reboot, BUT Goes DOWN After Some Time

Hi All,
I am really puzzled over this one. I have couple of servers running DB on them and I have used scripts to auto-enable them when server(s) reboot.
But there is one server where I see this funny behavior.
The DB comes-up after server reboot.
I can verify that in the startup logs and some more logs that I created.
I can see that LISTENER is able to communicate also.
But after a while, the DB shuts-down....!!
I have checked all the places I could. I have also tried to see the difference between this server and others (I did not install this one), but can not see any difference.
Is there anyway to find out (log) what is shutting down the DB??
Any help will be much appreciated as I am at my wits end.
