Installation: TNS-12532: TNS:invalid argument
I need some installation assistance.
I made a fresh install of Oracle 11.2.0.1.0 on a fresh install of Fedora 11 today with default options. I then made a fresh install of Instant Client and SQLPlus 11.1.0.7.0 on Windows XP SP3 on another machine. The following commands
tnsping fedora
tnsping scott/tiger@fedora/orcl
connect scott/tiger@fedora/orcl (in sqlplus /nolog)
all work on Fedora, but when I run them on XP the error is "*TNS-12532: TNS:invalid argument*" and nothing else.
Both firewalls are off. sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora and listener.ora are all unchanged from install. sqlnet.log, log.xml, listener.log do not record any entries. I made a couple of "trace support" traces if these might help.
Here is the listener trace for "tnsping fedora" on Fedora. http://pastebin.ca/1648751
Here is the listener trace for "tnsping fedora" on XP, with the error http://pastebin.ca/1648750
Thank you so much for looking into my problem.
AnnaInstant Client and SQLPlus on XP do not have a tnsnames.ora. There is no listener on XP. Why would there be a listener on the client side?
Here is the exact tnsnames.ora on Fedora, exactly as the net configuration assistant left it.
ORCL =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = fedora.domainsrus)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = orcl.domainsrus)
and here are the exact commands that work on Fedora but not on XP
$ tnsping fedora.domainsrus
$ tnsping scott/[email protected]/orcl.domainsrus
$ connect scott/[email protected]/orcl.domainsrus (in sqlplus /nolog)
the error is "*TNS-12532: TNS:invalid argument*"
Here is the listener trace for "tnsping fedora.domainsrus" on Fedora. http://pastebin.ca/1648751

Invalid arguments error while executing oracle procedure
Dear all,
we have a table hr_emp with fields ecode, ename, edoj.
the following procedure we created to return the table data to our .net app.
CREATE OR REPLACE
PACKAGE pname AS
TYPE T_hr_cursor IS REF CURSOR;
PROCEDURE get_hr_list (P_hrlist OUT T_hr_cursor);
END HRPACK;
create or replace PACKAGE BODY pname AS
PROCEDURE get_hr_list (P_hrlist OUT T_hr_cursor)
IS
BEGIN
OPEN P_hrlist FOR
SELECT *
FROM Hr_Emp WHERE edoj>='01-jan-2009';
END get_hr_list;
END;
these code edited in a single file [both package and package body] and created successfully.
but, while executing, by typing execute get_hr_list, ORA-00304 error, invalid arguments, is coming. How to resolve this, please help.
also, in sql developer 1.5.3, when we create this, another error is ciming like 'source doesnot have a runnable target'.
Where is the issue? please helpYes, its great dear...
sqlplus>
declare
hr_cursor hrmain.t_hr_cursor;
begin
pname.get_hr_list(hr_cursor);
end;
Its worked as i got 'pl/sql procedure successfully executed'.
Also, then how i can call this get_hr_list procedure from .net? im using c# and i want to get the result of hr_emp to c#. how i can call the same from c#? any help please -

TimORA-39001: invalid argument value, could be because of the db_link (is not seen by the owner of the code, by the schema which has the rights to run the code).

ORA-27102: out of memory SVR4 Error: 22: Invalid argument
Hi all,
I'm doing an install of a Solaris 10.2, Oracle 10.2 system. During the Create Database phase, I am getting;
ORA-27102: out of memory SVR4 Error: 22: Invalid argument
Doing some research, and reading through the details here:
Link: [http://technopark02.blogspot.com/2006/09/solaris-10oracle-fixing-ora-27102-out.html]
I think my issue is my SHM parameters, reinforced by the repeated entry in the Oracle Alert log:
+WARNING: EINVAL creating segment of size 0x0000000085000000+*
+fix shm parameters in /etc/system or equivalent+*
when the create fails.
I am not familar with Solaris' new project mechanism, although from what I have read, it seems to be set up properly.
Here are my server details:
# prtconf | grep Mem
Memory size: 8192 Megabytes
# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project 200
project: 200: QBI
NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT
project.max-shm-memory
privileged 10.0EB - deny -
system 16.0EB max deny -
And as for Oracle:
shared_pool_size = 1522029035
shared_pool_reserved_size = 152202903
pga_aggregate_target = 2705829396
sga_max_size = 3439329280
db_cache_size = 1159641169
During the course of troubleshooting, I have:
1 - Increased the amount of SHM allocated in the project. I have tried 16GB, 8 GB, 10 GB, 11GB etc, to no effect, so I reset it to 10GB (as seen above) and focused my efforts elsewhere.
2. SHARED_POOL_SIZE - I have decreased this by roughly 75% from the original value, again to no effect.
3. PGA and SGA sizes - I have increased these from the original values by an increment of 25%
Following the advice from the referenced blog (which does a good job of explaining the logic behind the actions) I have determined that the Alert log error message is telling me that it is lacking
2231369728
(Hex conversion value, which I think I need to read as 2GB, not 100% sure)
I've increased my project allocation, and the PGA sizes, did I just not do it enough?
Any advice?
Thanks for any input,

--ThanksUsing a DNS address in tnsnames.ora and a hardcoded IP address in listener.ora or a DNS name not translating to the same IP address the tnsnames.ora DNS translates to, is a known source for ORA-12541.
The listener tries to establish communications to the client, using the IP address it gets from listener.ora or by calling nslookup.
If they don't match: kabloey.
Been there, done that, and a little searching would have helped you out.

As you seen there is no problem about listener. But when i run "tnsping 10.10.5.61" from remote machine i am getting "ORA-12532 Invalid Argument" error. What the cause of this error? Could you explain me? How can i fix tihs?
Thanks for responses.I think that firewall block 1521 port. ( on remote computer i am trying : telnet localhost 1521, that didnt answer ). I could try to enable this port by typing ( in RedHat Linux 5.0 ):
semanage port -a -t oracle_port -p tcp 1521
but, i got an error like this :
libsepol.context_from_record: type oracle_port is not defined
libsepol.context_from_record: could not create context structure
libsepol.port_from_record: could not create port structure for range 1521:1521 (tcp)
libsepol.sepol_port_modify: could not load port range 1521 - 1521 (tcp)
libsemanage.dbase_policydb_modify: could not modify record value
libsemanage.semanage_base_merge_components: could not merge local modifications into policy
/usr/sbin/semanage: Could not add port tcp/1521
I guess the name "oracle_port" was wrong but i couldnt decide to what name was proper to that. Can you help me?
Thanks.

ORA-12535: TNS:operation timed out on a win2000 Oracle instance
Hi,
i have a Oracle 8.1.5 instance on a WIN2000 PC.
I can connect me to this database with sqlplus
as long i stay on the PC (means i started the sqlplus
on the same machine).
When i try to connect from an other (unix-)system
i get after a while (ca. 90 sec.) the error:
ORA-12535: TNS:operation timed out
tnsping works fine (answer comes back in one second)
There are no firewalls or other "strange" things between
the database and the failing client (on an other PC,
also win2000, Oracle 8.1.5 everything works fine).
Below you see the log with debug of the listener.
I have also a trace on level SUPPORT but this is more
than 1000 lines for just 1 or 2 TNSPINGs and one SQLPLUS
connect. Due to this volume i decided not to attach it to
this initial mail.
Does any one have some advice or experiences ?
Please advice.
Best regards,

TNS-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
there was a entry in /etc/hosts which was directing primary.swapnilkambli.com to 127.0.01
This was because I created this OS from a Virtual box template wherein that entry was made.
I changed the /etc/hosts to refelct the true address and it worked!! -
Couldn't export schema because of invalid argument value and other errors.
Hello, All.
I am using an oracle 10g database, which is running on a Redhat9 linux server, to manage our lab information.
I plan to export a schema (only tables, not the real data) into a file.
First, I used the Enterprise Manager to export. I went through and complete the export job. After submitting, the system says:
There is a problem writing to the export files: ORA-39094: Parallel execution not supported in this database edition..
So I just copy the PL/SQL code which would be send to the source database and comment the set_parallel procedure.
The code is listed here:
declare
h1 NUMBER;
begin
begin
h1 := dbms_datapump.open (operation => 'EXPORT', job_mode => 'SCHEMA', job_name => 'EXPORT000468', version => 'COMPATIBLE');
end;
--begin
--dbms_datapump.set_parallel(handle => h1, degree => 1);
--end;
begin
dbms_datapump.add_file(handle => h1, filename => 'EXPDAT.LOG', directory => 'DATA_FILE_DIR', filetype => 3);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'KEEP_MASTER', value => 0);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.metadata_filter(handle => h1, name => 'SCHEMA_EXPR', value => 'IN(''FLOWLIMS'')');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'ESTIMATE', value => 'BLOCKS');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.add_file(handle => h1, filename => 'EXPDAT%U.DMP', directory => 'DATA_FILE_DIR', filetype => 1);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'INCLUDE_METADATA', value => 1);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.data_filter(handle => h1, name => 'INCLUDE_ROWS', value => 0);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'DATA_ACCESS_METHOD', value => 'AUTOMATIC');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.start_job(handle => h1, skip_current => 0, abort_step => 0);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.detach(handle => h1);
end;
end;
I paste the code in an SQL*Plus session and execute it. The system says:
declare
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-39001: invalid argument value
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_SYS_ERROR", line 79
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_DATAPUMP", line 2486
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_DATAPUMP", line 2718
ORA-06512: at line 23
I am not very sure which part is wrong for I have exported another schema successfully using this method just now.
Any advice is highly appreciated!
QianWell, I will list more details about how to complete the job here.
1) Go to the Enterprise Manager, log in as FLOWLIMS (I just want to export the schema FLOWLIMS)
2)Go to the "Maitenance"
3)Under the "Utilities", select the "Export to files"
4)in the next page: Export: Export Type, select "Schemas"
5) in the next page, select the schema "FLOWLIMS"
6) in the next page, select these parameters:
Maximam Number of Threads in Export job: 1
Estimate Disk Space: Blockes
7) when I click the "Estimate Disk Space Now", it says :
Export Estimate Failed
There is a problem writing to the export files: ORA-39094: Parallel execution not supported in this database edition..
8) So I give up extimating
9) Other options:
I select "Generate Log file"
The Directory Object is the default value "DATA_FILE_DIR"
The Log File is the default value "EXPDAT.LOG"
10) the advanced options are like these:
Content: What to export from the Source Database: "Metadata only"
Export content: "include all objects"
Flashback: select "As the specified System Change Number (SCN)
SCN: just accept the default number 28901412
Query: select nothing. I need all fields of all tables.
11) in the next page, I accept the default directory object "DATA_FILE_DIR" and the default File Name "EXPDAT%U.DMP". The Maximam File Size is blank, I just leave it blank.
12) in the next page "Schedule" , I select to start the job immediatly.
13) in the next page "Review", it shows:
Export Type Schemas
Statistics type Estimate optimizer statistics when data is imported
Parallelism 1
Files to Export DATA_FILE_DIR EXPDAT%U.DMP
Log File DATA_FILE_DIR EXPDAT.LOG
and the PL/SQL is like that:
declare
h1 NUMBER;
begin
begin
h1 := dbms_datapump.open (operation => 'EXPORT', job_mode => 'SCHEMA', job_name => 'EXPORT000487', version => 'COMPATIBLE');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parallel(handle => h1, degree => 1);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.add_file(handle => h1, filename => 'EXPDAT.LOG', directory => 'DATA_FILE_DIR', filetype => 3);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'KEEP_MASTER', value => 0);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.metadata_filter(handle => h1, name => 'SCHEMA_EXPR', value => 'IN(''FLOWLIMS'')');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'ESTIMATE', value => 'BLOCKS');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.add_file(handle => h1, filename => 'EXPDAT%U.DMP', directory => 'DATA_FILE_DIR', filetype => 1);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'INCLUDE_METADATA', value => 1);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.data_filter(handle => h1, name => 'INCLUDE_ROWS', value => 0);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.set_parameter(handle => h1, name => 'DATA_ACCESS_METHOD', value => 'AUTOMATIC');
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.start_job(handle => h1, skip_current => 0, abort_step => 0);
end;
begin
dbms_datapump.detach(handle => h1);
end;
end;
14) after I click the "submit" , it shows:
Export Submit Failed
There is a problem writing to the export files: ORA-39094: Parallel execution not supported in this database edition..
15) I copy the PL/SQL, comment this part:
--begin
--dbms_datapump.set_parallel(handle => h1, degree => 1);
--end;
I run it in an iSQL*Plus Release 10.1.0.2,
It shows:

ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
guys,
i have a problem here with the connection between a client host and a server database, using a new non-default listener LISTENER_BKP_1. The error showed is:
ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
i had learned about this error here before, and i toke some notes as follows:

this means that it didn't reach the resource limites yet. What i can do to solve the problem ???
another important information is that connecting by the default listener LISTENER instead of the LISTENER_BKP_1 listener, the connection is completed successfully. There's enough SGA memory space too.

ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connectionDon't do Oracle on Windows, so I'm not sure how the following relates to the Listener dealing with a dedicated server connection request on Linux/Unix.
On Linux/Unix, a dedicated server request means just that - a dedicated process has to be started to service that client. The Listener does it by using the parameters of the configured listener.ora service to execute +$ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle+. This process then starts up, and the Listener hands off the client connection for this process for servicing.
If there is a failure somewhere on this series of steps fail, the Listener throws the ORA-12518 exception. For example, the +$ORACLE_HOME+ has been incorrectly configured in listener.ora and it fails to execute and startup a dedicated server process.
And this relates to the underlying error you are seeing:
TNS-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
32-bit Windows Error: 2: No such file or directoryI think that the Listener on Windows uses the CreateRemoteThread() Win32 call to start up the server process thread. However, it needs a valid process identifier (of the existing Oracle instance) for this call - and thus needs to first identify the Oracle instance process. Could be that this step uses a ORACLE_HOME reference. And if that directory path is not valid, it is unable to identify the process id of the Oracle instance and thus unable to spawn a dedicated thread to service that client. -
