  • Oracle 10g database control

    hi,
    Working on oracle 10g is just like a mirage for me. I have installed and uninstalled it many times on my new laptop, but not been able to work on it, because of many oracle problems. my OS is windows xp prof. sp2. i have cracked my brain on accessing to oracle 10g database control webpage, but have not succeeded yet. everytime i am successful in installing oracle 10g on my machine but everytime i fail to connect to em-database control and got the error 'page can not be displayed'.
    my laptop uses dhcp and it uses a wireless LAN. i install and configure loopback adapter before installing 10g. i have tried with 192.168.x.y as the ip address of the loop back adapter and have put many numbers in place of x, y where 0<x<254 and 0<y<254 . Infact i have tried with 192.168.15.16
    192.168.18.12
    192.168.78.12
    192.168.84.123
    192.168.67.102
    192.168.20.178
    and many more and in all the previous cases i configured subnet mask to be
    255.255.255.0. Everytime database installation is successful but not able to connect to oem db control webpage.
    One more error i get everytime is that whenever i try to connect to database through sql window , sometimes i connect and sometimes i dont.i get the error ORA-12357 TNS Connection Closed.
    i provide username: scott
    password : tiger .
    host string: orcl
    ( orcl is the database name and also the name of the sid).
    But i always am able to connect to the database through command line c:\ prompt and everything works fine.
    Please provide me some solutions for the above problems...

  • Restoring Oracle 10g Using Command Line

    OK. I have used Oracle 10g for about 4 hours now, so don't laugh when i ask dumb questions. I have installed Oracle 10g and just can't get the interface to work. So I used SQL in command line and I can connect and diconnnect from the database, I can log into the database as SYSDBA. So from what I can tell the database is working, not the interface though. I get Java Exceptions, URL:null errors and so on.... Can I use the command Prompt to restore a cold backup? I don't know how to use RMAN functions, but if thats the only way i guess i will have to learn. Thanks in advance.

    Ok well to detail more....I performed a cold backup on a customer production server and need to restore that cold backup to a test server to check for consistency. So right now I have 2 files in a folder which are the cold backup files and a server with a non functioning Oracle Interface to restore. I can't startup the database in the interface, and when i navigate to the perform restore in the interface it asked me to supply host and database credentials. I did that and it returns a error of something like URL null cant contact agent. I forget what the exact error is and I have already uninstalled oracle hoping to install again to fix problem, but after 4 times I doubt it will. All Oracle Services are running also. The admin accout is part of the ora_dba group as well. Any other permission things I need to check for?

    For Oracle 10g, here is some information from metalink.
    O/S Information:
    Tru64 UNIX 5.1b patchkit 4 or greater is required. You must also edit the following parameters in the /etc/sysconfigtab file:
    vfs: fifo_do_adaptive = 0
    vm: new_wire_method = 1
    Note: That setting new_wire_method = 1 should increase overall performance. If you are using 5.1b patchkit 2 or less, you should set new_wire_method = 0

  • Oracle 10g server sizing information

    We are planning to implement WEBMTHODS and METAMATRIX tool. These apps require Oracle database. We are planning 3 HP rp4410 servers running HP-UX 11i. One foe WEBMETHODS APP, ONE FOR METAMATRIX. BOTH APPS are using one ORACLE DB server.
    I am looking some type of ORACLE 10g server sizing information to support ny hardware configuration. Can someone help me where to find this information?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    What is AFAIK? As Far As I Know
    Can you send the contact info?Unless you're not living in the same country (please see my profile), I don't think it would make any sense. I do know that hp.at offers sizing information.
    If you are refering to Just HP support I did contact
    them. They asked me to contact Oracle. I am looking
    for some guideline documentation.So thing are a bit different in your country ...

  • Find deleted information from user_jobs in Oracle 10g

    Hello All,
    I had scheduled a job in oracle 10g to run only once using dbms_jobs.
    I wanted to find out how long the job took ( total_time) and what SQL it was running ( user_job.what) but the information about the job seem to get deleted from user_jobs once the job is completed.
    Is there any other table/ view I can use to find these information?
    Also, will it be possible to query the user_job as of previous time when the data was there? if yes, please also let me know what privilidges and setting is required. Currently, I just have basic developer priviledge.
    Many thanks in advance for any help.

    Information about how long a job took and what SQL it was running is not stored anywhere when you use DBMS_JOB. Once of the nice things about using DBMS_SCHEDULER rather than DBMS_JOB for job scheduling is that DBMS_SCHEDULER automatically logs timing information.
    How long ago do you want to look at the data in USER_JOBS? If you are just trying to look back an hour or two ago, you may be able to use a flashback query. How far back you can go depends on your UNDO_RETENTION setting, the size of your UNDO tablespace, and the amount of UNDO that is generated by your system. The theoretical maximum you could flashback is 5 days, realistically, not many production databases can flashback more than a few hours unless someone has specifically identified the need to do longer-term flashback queries. The default UNDO_RETENTION is only 15 minutes. Plus, you're not guaranteed that you'll be able to flashback (that can be changed, but it's a pretty dangerous change because it will cause the database to stop if you run out of UNDO space).

    Hi Anit,
    Is it safe to do so.ALWAYS check with your CSR for licensing deals, things change constantlt.
    what are the difference between both the edition.EE has all the goodies! Here is my list of differences in SE and EE: http://www.dba-oracle.com/art_so_oracle_standard_enterprise_edition.htm
    what are the restriction i can face if i am moving form 10g enterprise to 10g standard.No replication, no Data Guard, no stored outlines, no MV's . . . .
    what are the steps i have to do to do the same.Just install SE, point your $ORACLE_HOME to it and bounce
    Hope this answers your question . . .

  • Oracle 10g Lite Product Information

    Hi all !
    I just need a help regarding the Oracle 10g Lite product from Oracle.
    I need to work on a Java/J2EE project that requires an Oracle DB as backend. I recently came to know about Oracle Lite and want some suggesstions.
    My requirements:
    1. I need a local Database in my "laptop". Can this software be used for that purpose.
    2. I should be able to create a new schema with some tables and procedures (I thnk this is possible in Oracle Lite).
    3. I have a Windows XP Home Edition. I read in many threads that Oracle Products do not work on Windows XP Home Edition. How true is this ?
    4. Is Oracle Lite appropriate for my requirement.
    I am reading the Oracle Lite white pages to find out more info. Please share your thoughts on this.
    Thanks.

  • Oracle 10g just installed

    Please help me, I've just installed the Oracle 10g Database with the Enterprise option in my laptop, but this database actually eats all the RAM of my laptop, I just have 512MB, is there any way that I could possibly change this behavior? i mean, Is there anyway that I can change the settings of the database so it wouldn't consume all my system resources?
    THANKS!
    PS: I installed the enterprise version because I want to practice certain things that are available only in this version.

    You may check your SGA settings in init.ora/spfile.ora , especially
    db_cache_size
    java_pool_size
    large_pool_size
    shared_pool_size
    (10g Release2) streams_pool_size
    You have to play around with the values, there are no general rules, possibly you can set java_pool_size and large_pool_size to 0.

  • Oracle 10G to me or just for Puschitz

    Hi,
    I am having such a tremendous dificulty trying to install Oracle 9i that I wonder if it would me more inteligent to install Oracle 10g.
    Of course my question is: Is it for a common non super skilled mortal like me or another challenge that only Puschitz will be able to win?
    Have anyone tried it?
    What are your opinions? Should we go with 10g or is it preferable to deal with better known problems?

  • Oracle 10G New Feature........Part 1

    Dear all,
    from last couple of days i was very busy with my oracle 10g box,so i think this is right time to
    share some intresting feature on 10g and some internal stuff with all of you.
    Have a look :-
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Oracle 10g Memory and Storage Feature.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    1.Automatic Memory Management.
    2.Online Segment Shrink
    3.Redolog Advisor, checkpointing
    4.Multiple Temporary tablespace.
    5.Automatic Workload Repository
    6.Active Session History
    7.Misc
    a)Rename Tablespace
    b)Bigfile tablespace
    c)flushing buffer cache
    8.ORACLE INTERNAL
    a)undocumented parameter (_log_blocks_during_backup)
    b)X$ view (x$messages view)
    c)Internal Structure of Controlfile
    1.Automatic memory management
    ================================
    This feature reduce the overhead of oracle DBA.previously mostly time we need to set diff oracle SGA parameter for
    better performance with the help of own experience,advice views and by monitoring the behaviour
    of oracle database.
    this was just time consuming activity.........
    Now this feature makes easy life for oracle DBA.
    Just set SGA_TARGET parameter and it automatically allocate memory to different SGA parameter.
    it focus on DB_CACHE_SIZE
    SHARED_POOL_SIZE
    LARGE_POOL
    JAVA_POOL
    and automatically set it as
    __db_cache_size
    __shared_pool_size
    __large_pool_size
    __java_pool_size
    check it in alert_log
    MMAN(memory manager) process is new in 10g and this is responsible for sga tuning task.
    it automatically increase and decrease the SGA parameters value as per the requirement.
    Benefit:- Maximum utlization of available SGA memory.
    2.Online Segment Shrink.
    ==========================
    hmmmmm again a new feature by oracle to reduce the downtime.Now oracle mainly focus on availablity
    thats why its always try to reduce the downtime by intrducing new feature.
    in previous version ,reducing High water mark of table was possible by
    Exp/imp
    or
    alter table move....cmd. but on these method tables was not available for normal use for long hrs if it has more data.
    but in 10g with just few command we can reduce the HWmark of table.
    this feature is available for ASSM tablespaces.
    1.alter table emp enable row movement.
    2.alter table emp shrink space.
    the second cmd have two phases
    first phase is to compact the segment and in this phase DML operations are allowed.
    second phase(shrink phase)oracle shrink the HWM of table, DML operation will be blocked at that time for short duration.
    So if want to shrink the HWM of table then we should use it with two diff command
    first compact the segment and then shrink it on non-peak hrs.
    alter table emp shrink space compact. (This cmd doesn't block the DML operation.)
    and alter table emp shrink space. (This cmd should be on non-peak hrs.)
    Benefit:- better full table scan.
    3.Redolog Advisor and checkpointing
    ================================================================
    now oracle will suggest the size of redo log file by V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY
    SELECT OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE
    FROM V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY
    this value is influence with the value of FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET .
    Checkpointing
    Automatic checkpointing will be enable after setting FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET to non-zero value.
    4.Multiple Temporary tablespace.
    ==================================
    Now we can manage multiple temp tablespace under one group.
    we can create a tablespace group implicitly when we include the TABLESPACE GROUP clause in the CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE or ALTER TABLESPACE statement and the specified tablespace group does not currently exist.
    For example, if group1 is not exists,then the following statements create this groups with new tablespace
    CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp1 TEMPFILE '/u02/oracle/data/temp01.dbf'
    SIZE 50M
    TABLESPACE GROUP group1;
    --Add Existing temp tablespace into group by
    alter tablespace temp2 tablespace group group1.
    --we can also assign the temp tablespace group on database level as default temp tablespace.
    ALTER DATABASE <db name> DEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE group1;
    benefit:- Better I/O
    One sql can use more then one temp tablespace
    5.AWR(Automatic Workload Repository):-
    ================================== AWR is built in Repository and Central point of Oracle 10g.Oracle self managing activities
    is fully dependent on AWR.by default after 1 hr, oracle capure all database uses information and store in AWR with the help of
    MMON process.we called it Memory monitor process.and all these information are kept upto 7 days(default) and after that it automatically purge.
    we can generate a AWR report by
    SQL> @?/rdbms/admin/awrrpt
    Just like statspack report but its a advance and diff version of statspack,it provide more information of Database as well as OS.
    it show report in Html and Text format.
    we can also take manually snapshot for AWR by
    BEGIN
    DBMS_WORKLOAD_REPOSITORY.CREATE_SNAPSHOT ();
    END;
    **The STATISTICS_LEVEL initialization parameter must be set to the TYPICAL or ALL to enable the Automatic Workload Repository.

    Benefit:- Now DBA have more free time to play games.....................:-)
    Advance version of statspack
    more DB and OS information with self managing capabilty
    New Automatic alert and database advisor with the help of AWR.
    6.Active Session History:-
    ==========================
    V$active_session_history is view that contain the recent session history.
    the memory for ASH is comes from SGA and it can't more then 5% of Shared pool.
    So we can get latest and active session report from v$active_session_history view and also get histortical data of
    of session from DBA_HIST_ACTIVE_SESS_HISTORY.
    v$active_session_history include some imp column like:-
    ~SQL identifier of SQL statement
    ~Object number, file number, and block number
    ~Wait event identifier and parameters
    ~Session identifier and session serial number
    ~Module and action name
    ~Client identifier of the session
    7.Misc:-
    ========
    Rename Tablespace:-
    =================
    in 10g,we can even rename a tablespace by
    alter tablespace <tb_name> rename to <tb_name_new>;
    This command will update the controlfile,data dictionary and datafile header,but dbf filename will be same.
    **we can't rename system and sysaux tablespace.
    Bigfile tablespace:-
    ====================
    Bigfile tablespace contain only one datafile.
    A bigfile tablespace with 8K blocks can contain a 32 terabyte datafile.
    Bigfile tablespaces are supported only for locally managed tablespaces with automatic segment-space management.
    we can take the advantage of bigfile tablespace when we are using ASM or other logical volume with RAID.
    without ASM or RAID ,it gives poor response.
    syntax:-
    CREATE BIGFILE TABLESPACE bigtbs
    Flushing Buffer Cache:-
    ======================
    This option is same as flushing the shared pool,but only available with 10g.
    but i don't know, whats the use of this command in prod database......
    anyway we can check and try it on test server for tuning n testing some query etc....
    SQL> alter system flush buffer_cache;
    System altered.
    ++++++++++++++++++
    8.Oracle Internal
    ++++++++++++++++++
    Here is some stuff that is not related with 10g but have some intresting things.
    a)undocumented parameter "_log_blocks_during_backup"
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++
    as we know that oracle has generate more redo logs during hotbackup mode because
    oracle has to maintain the a complete copy of block into redolog due to split block.
    we can also change this behaviour by setting this parameter to False.
    If Oracle block size equals the operating system block size.thus reducing the amount of redo generated
    during a hot backup.
    WITHOUT ORACLE SUPPORT DON'T SET IT ON PROD DATABASE.THIS DOCUMENT IS JUST FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSE.
    b)some X$ views (X$messages)
    ++++++++++++++++
    if you are intresting in oracle internal architecture then x$ view is right place for getting some intresting things.
    X$messages :-it show all the actions that a background process do.
    select * from x$messages;
    like:-
    lock memory at startup MMAN
    Memory Management MMAN
    Handle sga_target resize MMAN
    Reset advisory pool when advisory turned ON MMAN
    Complete deferred initialization of components MMAN
    lock memory timeout action MMAN
    tune undo retention MMNL
    MMNL Periodic MQL Selector MMNL
    ASH Sampler (KEWA) MMNL
    MMON SWRF Raw Metrics Capture MMNL
    reload failed KSPD callbacks MMON
    SGA memory tuning MMON
    background recovery area alert action MMON
    Flashback Marker MMON
    tablespace alert monitor MMON
    Open/close flashback thread RVWR
    RVWR IO's RVWR
    kfcl instance recovery SMON
    c)Internal Structure of Controlfile
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    The contents of the current controlfile can be dumped in text form.
    Dump Level Dump Contains
    1 only the file header
    2 just the file header, the database info record, and checkpoint progress records
    3 all record types, but just the earliest and latest records for circular reuse record types
    4 as above, but includes the 4 most recent records for circular reuse record types
    5+ as above, but the number of circular reuse records included doubles with each level
    the session must be connected AS SYSDBA
    alter session set events 'immediate trace name controlf level 5';
    This dump show lots of intresting information.
    it also show rman recordes if we used this controlfile in rman backup.
    Thanks

  • General question on SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g

    Hello all,
    I just have a general question on migration from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g using SQL Developer.
    How does it migrate Users with proper privileges from SQL Server to Oracle? Follow the interface steps? Or should the users be created on destination Oracle side?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    It depends which type of migration you are making.
    For a 'Standard' migration when you migrate data a 'create user' statement is created as part of the migration and you will see this in the generated code.
    If you are using the 'Quick' migration option then you need to create the Oracle user or use an existing user to receive the data.
    Your best option is to review the documentation available from -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration//workbench/index_sqldev_omwb.html
    or directly from -
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12151_01/index.htm
    and then get back with specific questions if this does not give you the information you need.
    Review the chapter -

    hi,
    currently i am doing integration b/w uccx7.0 and oracle 10g. i have installed the oracle client 10g . and i added the DSN in ODBC and also the test connection is succesful.. but when i mention the DSN in app admin page (Subsytem> Database). it is showing me error that some of the information is incorrect for the connection. and is not allowing me to add DSN in appadmin page of uccx 7.0.. even though i am using the same information in sqlplus to query the database from ipccx. Do i need to mention sth to make it work.
    Regards
    Nareh

    Hi there
    A few things you have to watch out for.
    Firstly if you have create the DSN and able to connect to it via the ODBC its more likely that the driver was not loaded correctly.
    - Remove the Driver and DNS
    - Install the driver again and create the DSN and test if it works
    - Reload the whole windows <----- was working on a case for 3 hours UCCX just wasn't loading the new 10g drivers reload fixed this
    Now create the database connection and test.
    Should this not work you can try the following:

  • "In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition

    Hi,
    In one of our applications, we are using TimesTen 5.1.24 and Oracle 9i
    databases (platform - Solaris 9i).
    TimesTen holds application information which needs to be accessed quickly
    and Oracle 9i is a master application database.
    Now we are looking at an option of migrating from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g
    database. While exploring about Oracle 10g features, came to know about
    "In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle Enterprise Edition. This made
    me to think about using Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition with "In-Memory
    Database Cache" option for our application.
    Following are the advantages that I could visualize by adopting the
    above-mentioned approach:
    1. Data reconciliation between Oracle and TimesTen is not required (i.e.
    data can be maintained only in Oracle tables and for caching "In-Memory
    Database Cache" can be used)
    2. Data maintenance is easy and gives one view access to data
    I have following queries regarding the above-mentioned solution:
    1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
    "In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
    2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
    installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
    cache feature)?
    3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
    Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
    4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
    access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
    in making this statement?
    5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
    Database Cache"?
    In "Options and Packs" chapter in Oracle documentation
    (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/options.htm
    #CIHJJBGA), I encountered the following statement:
    "For the purposes of licensing Oracle In-Memory Database Cache, only the
    processors on which the TimesTen In-Memory Database component of the
    In-Memory Database Cache software is installed and/or running are counted
    for the purpose of determining the number of licenses required."
    We have servers with the following configuration. Is there a way to get the
    count of processors on which the Cache software could be installed and/or
    running? Please assist.
    Production box with 12 core 2 duo processors (24 cores)
    Pre-production box with 8 core 2 duo processors (16 cores)
    Development and test box with 2 single chip processors
    Development and test box with 4 single chip processors
    Development and test box with 6 single chip processors
    Thanks & Regards,
    Vijay

    Hi Vijay,
    regarding your questions:
    1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
    "In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
    ==> Product has just been renamed and integrated better with the Oracle database - Times-Ten == In-Memory-Cache-Database
    2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
    installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
    cache feature)?
    ==> Seperate Installation
    3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
    Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
    ==> Please have a look here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/quickstart/cc_qs_index.html
    This explains the differences.
    4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
    access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
    in making this statement?
    ==> Please see above mentioned papers
    5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
    Database Cache"?
    ==> Again ... ;-)
    Kind regards
    Mike
