Oracle 10g Workshop I or Oracle 11g workshop I

Hi guys,
I need a bit of advice on which course should I follow. I know that Oracle 11g is the latest release and it composes of new features compared to 10g, but I need to know the which is worth doing is 10g or 11g.
-Coz I heard that oracle 11g still runs on beta versions and the revised version has not been released.
-The demand and the market base for both of them, coz far as I know one of my neighbour who is a dba he said
oracle 10g has around 80% of the market share whilst 11g has only around 15%.
-And also guys the exam paper itself coz 10g has a duration of 90 mins and 11g comprises of 3-3.5 hours paper
which most likely means that the paper might be difficult.
I am new to this field and I am not quite sure which exam I should write, so need some clarification,,,,

Thanks in advance for your replies...Just in addition to Hans and Bigdelboy's replies, first thing , `11g is NOT in beta. 11g R1(11106) release officially came in 2007 July and was launched completely for commercial use. As Hans pointed, release 2 of 11g is currently in beta but as per the "rumours" , this also should end soon. So you must throw this out from the mind that 11g is running in beta. Its very well out and its amazingly very well accepted in the industry.
I won't comment or contradict (and won't even agree) to what your friend said about the percentage of the usage of the versions. But few thoughts that do come in mind, 10g is around now from some time so its obvious that its acceptancce would be more as compared to 11g. But that said, 11g , as a surprise, even in release 1 is much stable and proving-to-be-efficient as compared to 10g. So very soon, IMHO, industry would be coming out to 11g. As pointed to you already about 10g's extended support, and I guess this year is also extended support year for 9i, very soon, lots of migrations would happen( and are happening) over either 10g/11g.If it would be me who has to decide between 10/11g, I would pick 11g. But this should give you an idea for the point. There are many shops which still have not bothered tolook even at 9i, let alone be 10/11g. The site where I am at the moment, they still are running many of their production dbs on 7.3even. And who knows even being a 11g certified, you may end up for your job in a shop who runs 9i,8i or even versions before that.
Which version to pick from 10/11 as 11g is new and has new features as compared to 10g, for this I shall say, 11g's most of the features(not all though) are actually enhancements to the features of 10g. Many things hail from 10g only. So its not wrong to say that if one has an experience of 10g, it would be a bit easier to understand the terminology of 11g when it would say, there is some thing called ADDM which is now both database wide and Intance wide(an 11g feature). But as ADDM came in 10g first, if you have the idea about it, IMO, it would be easier for you to take care about 11g. I played with 10g for almost 3 years before taking up the new feature exam of it and it took almost 1 year with 3 different books and playing with 11g to take up the new features exam of 11g.
In the end, certification , in whatever version, is just a mark of your will to be current with teh technology. Even if you have scored 100% and are not ableto answer the questions in the interview, it won't take you much far for getting a job of dba and being good in it.

Build the Indexes and it is still slow. I am querying from a view from another database, which is in 10g instances.

Upgrading from Oracle 10G standard edition to Oracle 10G enterprise edition

I want to upgrade from Oracle 10G standard edition to Oracle 10G enterprise edition. Is there any script provided by oracle which I can run on existing Oracle 10G standard edition to upgrade to enterprise edition after completing the licensing formalities or do I need to install Oracle 10g Enterprise edition from scratch and then migrate my data.

You will not need to perform any data migration to upgrade to EE. The diffetence between standard en enerprise editions are the features offered. When you upgrade you can use the same set of files you used to install standard edition and just add the enterprise edition features you want to use in the 'Custom' section of the Universal Installer.

Connect Oracle 10g client to the Oracle 10g database behind a firewall

I need to connect an Oracle 10g client to the Oracle 10g database (windows server 2003 box) behind a firewall. I ran into this problem: Port redirection. Port redirection requires the Oracle client to connect to the database using a different port (usually a randomly selected TCP port) than the default or originally configured one. If there is no firewall between the server and the client, port redirection will not affect the actual connection. However, if port redirection does occur with the server behind a firewall, the client will be likely to suffer from a connectivity failure. The reason is simple: the newly assigned port based on port redirection is often blocked by the firewall. Such failures are not uncommon on Windows platforms.
I don't know how to stablished an unique TCP port.
I Enabled USE_SHARED_SOCKET on the Oracle database server, windows registry. Acording to what I read,that will force the server machine to share its port 1521 and thus all clients will stay on that port when connecting to the database. Noticeably, port redirection will not occur with USE_SHARED_SOCKET enabled, but that's true in oracle 8 or oracle 9. In oracle 10g this solution doesn't work.
I will apreciate any help about this. Please!

Three solutions in order of preference
1 Use Connection Manager on the server (only installed using a Custom Install). This will tunnel all traffic through a single port. It will also allow you to configure allowable nodes
2 Set up shared server to use a fixed port. Disadvantage: shared server has overhead and the number of connections is limited
3 Use shared_sockets. Disadvantage: when you stop the listener everyone is disconnected.

Its really very difficult to tell you what exactly went wrong with the limited information given by you. Did you check the alert log and other cluster (crsd and cssd ) logs? If not, I would strongly recommend you to pay attention to these logs for any clue.

Oracle 10g reports migration to Oracle 11g migration

I have migrated oracle 10g reports to Oracle 11g reports and generated REP file. But when we execute REP file using RWRUN.EXE I am getting below error.

1. Go to C:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\config\FRComponent\frcommon\tools\admin
2. Make a backup of the file 'cauprefs.ora'
3. Open up the file in a text editor:

Oracle 10g client connect to oracle 11g server

In my system, i have installed oracle 11g server(11.1.0.6.0). while i try to connect to this server by 10g client in my friends system,which is in the same network,it is showing
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist,
then i tried with other system (using oracle10g client), its showing
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
then i tried with one another system (using oracle 9i client) -- its is connected.
what may be the problem. not connecting using oracle 10g client. and also different error.

Windows 7 64 bit, Access 2010 32 bit, Oracle 10G client 32 bit, Oracle database 10.2.0.4 64 bit

I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database from Windows 7 OS - 64 bit using
Access 2010 32 bit and Oracle 32 bit client version 10.2.0.1 installed on PC.
My user requires a 64 bit Windows 7 OS for other needs.
Oracle ODBC driver is 32 bit from Oracle 32 bit client.
In Windows 7 OS 64 bit, ODBC DSN setup software is located in:
C:\Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe for 64 bit drivers - all DSN types setup and
C:\Windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe for 32 bit drivers - USER DSN setup
When I run the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I see the Version number is 6.1.7601.17632
I setup a User DSN using the 32 bit odbcad32.exe with a 32 bit ODBC driver.
Our Oracle TNSnames.ora file has our standard entries which have worked for years
(Windows 7 OS 32 bit and everything 32 bit has connected for years too)
So when I configure an ODBC User DSN and leave all the default settings and press the TEST Connection button, it says it works.
But when I open the existng Access 2010 database (which does connect to Oracle in a Windows 7 32 bit PC environment),
1. I go to Access External Data ribbon tab / Link to the Data Source by creating a linked table / press OK
2. I select the Machine Data source = to the USER DSN name / press OK
3. The Oracle ODBC Driver Connect Window opens with Service Name = USER DSN and User Name and it wants a Password
4. I enter the correct password and I get the following error message:
ODBC call failed
[Oracle][ODBC]{Ora]ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified

I have tried a quite a number of fixes:
I have gone into the PC registry and cleaned out most or all off the Oracle client keys and
reinstalled the Oracle 32 bit 10g client. It didn't fix the error.
I read about the Oracle instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.4.zip with ODBC modules but I have Windows 7 64 bit.
Anyone experienced a problem like this and have a fix?

I did not get to try it because after I entered my question, I did a lot more internet Googling.
I found this small comment:
“There's a known issue where you get a 12154 error message running 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS using client 10201, and
It should be resolved by patching the client to 10204, which you do by applying the 10204 database patch to it.”
I searched around for the 10.2.0.4 patch for 10.2.0.1 Oracle 32 bit client.
When I contacted my Oracle DBA to ask if he had that patch, he said that I should try the 11g 32 bit client on the Win 7 64 bit PC.
We have a 10.2.0.4 Oracle database but he said the 11g client should work fine.
I tried it and it solved the problem!
With so many settings, configurations and permissions involved in ODBC, I am inclined to think that I missed a setting but
it was a bug in the 32 bit client 10.2.0.1.

Oracle 10g AS pacth for Oracle Apps 11i

Hi everyone,
I have installed Oracle 10g AS (10.1.2.0.2) for Oracle Business Intelligence on Sun Solaris 10 (64 bit) and integrated it with Oracle Apps 11i (11.5.10.2).
Everything seems fine but i am facing problems like
1) Toolbars not appearing correctly sometimes like it is disabled and enables by itself.
2)sometimes clients come accross "Connection with Server lost..." error while taking export (very few).
3) Its giving the error (mentioned at the end) only on one client machine while taking export to Excel.
I have tried installing Oracle 10g AS patch set 2 10.1.2.2 for Solaris but the problem persisits. Is patch set 2 compatible or certified with Oracle Apps 11i? if not then is there any other work around or do i have to wait for some new patch.

The last I heard is that 10.1.2.2 is not yet certified for use against E-Business Suite unless your operating system is Linux. Please take a look at this posting on Steven Chan's blog: http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/2007/04/23
The issues you are encountering, particularly the one with the toolbars disappearing, were fixed in patch 5345528 as described on my blog here: http://learndiscoverer.blogspot.com/2006/08/more-to-toolbar-icons-graying-out.html
I would advise you to go for this patch first until Oracle certify 10.1.2.2. for Sun.

Is it possible to enable Java in oracle 10g express with the oracle jvm?

I've oracle 10g express installed. I would like to create java stored procedures in a schema. But, how do I have the database java-enabled?

It might be possible.
Realize, however, that the Oracle JVM is a component of the Standard Edition One and higher - so to be able to use it you need to license Standard Edition One or higher.
If you are going to violate the license anyway, why not stick with an Edition that contains the JVM.

Password problem in oracle 10g after upgrading from oracle 9i

Hi to all,
i'm migrating oracle 9i to oracle 10g. in oracle 9i username/password are same character(eg kareem/kareem)
after upgrading to oracle 10g will it create any problem. Because in oracle 10g the condition is when creating user is username and password should not contain same character (kareem/kareem not allowed).

in oracle 10g document, they have mention below condition to create user. See the second condition.
• Passwords must be between 4 and 30 characters long.
• Passwords cannot be the same as the user name.
• Passwords must be from the database character set and can include the underscore (_), dollar ($), and pound sign (#) characters.
• Passwords cannot be Oracle reserved words.
• Don't start the password with a numeral.
• Don's use change_on_install or manager as passwords, since they are used by Oracle.
As i'm going to upgrade oracle 9i to 10g. if it give problem because username and password are same then i have to request my development team to change the password in their application.Can you please verify and tell me.

Actually i am new to oracle *9i R2* because i worked on Oracle 7 in that i was getting by default forms and reports will be installed. after inquiring with my friends they said that in oracle *9i R2* there wont be forms and reports installed for that you have to install Oracle 10G Developer Suite. but i am having a doubt that weather both can be installed on the same machine in the same operating system.

Yes we can use 2 databases on same machine on same operating system but u need to use different Oracle Homes for each version. But u can't ran Form 10g wid Oracle 9i database. You need to use only 10G forms Reports wid 10G Database.

In oracle 10g is the same Oracle Net Listener than...?

Hi forum members again I'm vey new in oracle server10g, this time I have a doubt about oracle components , that is the same the Oracle Net Listner than the Oracle SQL*Net listener, if is not the same, please tell me the diference

SQL*Net has gone through a few minor revisions over the years.. We've seen SQL*Net Version 1, SQL*Net V2, Net8, Oracle Networking and now (in 10g) Oracle Net Services.
It's exactly the same, only different.
Not surprisingly, Oracle actually documents the differences in their documentation which is freely available for all to read.
If you want some information about what's new in Oracle Networking, I encourage you to read the introduction section of the "Oracle® Database Net Services Administrator's Guide (10g Release 2 (10.2))" titled "What's New in Oracle Net Services?"
