ORACLE 8.1.5 on RH6.0?

All:
Just joined the OTN and found this newsgroup.
We first tried to load 8.0.5 by downloading the ~175M
from the ORACLE site. This took a few days to get what
we thought was the complete package.
I tried installing and got quite a few errors/anomalies.
Last week, I/we received my/an ORACLE CD ROM with 8.1.5 (*not*
8.0.5) on it last week. I tried to install it and I had
some weirdness using "dbassist".
Came back tonite to try to figure out what was going on.
Several things mostly gleaned from this newsgroup:
1) If you use GNOME/ENLIGHTENMENT you must install the
enlightenment patches from Redhat, otherwise the
GUI installer doesn't work properly.
2) JRE 1.1.6 seems to work fine on my RH6.0.
3) Pay close attention to the "deinstallation" notes
on the CD ROM (I should have looked this over more
closely; I had 8.0.5 partially installed before
I started the 8.1.5).
4) I'd definitely would suggest using the "Custom" installation
mainly 'cuz the LINUX docs are not included in the
"Typical" installation.
About 2 hours ago I used the installer to de-install
everything related to 8.1.5, and then per the "deinstall"
instructions removed everything under $ORACLE_HOME.
Will report back here when I get done with the re-install.
Would be glad to share info/ideas with others who are using
8.1.5.
If you should respond to this particular thread please
include my EMAIL as well as posting to this group as I
don't regularly access this newsgroup.
Thanks,
Charlie Lindahl

The Oracle Enterprise Manager is not on the CD either. (at least
not the one I received in August)
As far as I have heard, the all Java, cross-platform, OEM 2.0.4
doesn't install or run on Linux.
If you find out any differently, please let me know.

  • Installation problem 8.0.5 on RH6.2

I've installed this many times on various Dell machines with no problems, following the guide on jordan.fortwayne.com.
However, I am having problems with the latest box from DELL. It's poweredge 2400 with RH6.2.
Upon creating database objects, the installer takes a long time and the proceeds with the error message. The log file contains the following error:
ORA-00445: background process "PMON" did not start after 120 seconds.
I followed the guide as usual. I had a small problem with rpm's because the rpm kept saying that rpms were installed, while when i tried doing rpm erase, it was saying they were not installed. I decided to force install by doing rpm -ivh force <name>. In either case, binaries don't core dump at this point. I can enter sqlplus and it gives me log in prompt. Interestingly though when I type exit it just hangs.
Any help would really be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Personal Oracle 8.1.5, Installation Problem

I installed Personal Oracle (Windows NT)8.1.5 and
    I installed Oracle Client 8.1.6
Personal Oracle (main database: ZEUS) works fine! only if I am at network.
As soon as I undock my laptop, personal Oracle does not allow me to get connection through sqlplus.
    I checked listeners:
    File:D:\Oracle\Ora81\NETWORK\ADMIN\listener.ora
    ZEUS =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = sashb)(PORT = 1521))
    (PROTOCOL_STACK =
    (PRESENTATION = TTC)
    (SESSION = NS)
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
    (PROTOCOL_STACK =
    (PRESENTATION = TTC)
    (SESSION = NS)
seems they are fine. sql.ora - looks like fine as well!
    File: D:\Oracle\Ora81\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora
    SQLNET.CLIENT_REGISTRATION = sashb
    NAMES.PREFERRED_SERVERS =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = sashb)(PORT = 1521))
    configuration file ... find!
    Configuration File:D:\Oracle\Ora81\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
    ZEUS.LAN.MIL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = SASHB)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ZEUS)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA.LAN.MIL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
The question is very simple, why the personal Oracle works inside network, and it does not work if I undock my system?
If I need to make any changes, what changes must be done?
It is window NT, Service pack 5.
Personal Oracle installed with default settings at D: drive, with default directory settings.
    PS.
I tryed to shutdown database, listeners, and startup listeners, and after this database--did not help. I check registry... seems fine.
    What is missed?
    Thank you very much.

  • 8i: delete db w/ dbassists leave files; should it?

Have Oracle 8.1.5.0.0 installed on RedHat 6.0.
Created database instance TEST (and tried to put the data files
in /db/oradata rather than ($ORACLE_BASE=/db/ora/)oradata [see
    other post].
Tried using "dbassist" to delete the database. It proceeded
without complaint but left several files/directories for TEST.
I'm not sure if its a bug or a feature but here's what it left
    behind:
all the files usally in "/db/ora/admin/test/" are still there.
just the directory "/db/oradata/test"; the data files are gone.
all the files/links usually in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs:
    initTEST.ora link
    lkTEST
    orapwTEST
all the files usually in $ORACLE_HOME/install for "test".
I can see where the files in $ORACLE_HOME/install might be
retained (IF you can use them to recreate the database) but I
think the rest are all "missed" and need to be removed by hand
(to avoid confusion and problems if/when "test" recreated).
    Comments appreciated.

  • Why is Advanced Replication available with Standard 8i?

I was installing Oracle 8i "Standard" today on RH6. When I ran
dbassist it offered an option to install Advanced Replication.
According to the white papers online, Advanced Replication is not
an Option available for 8i Standard, unless I am misreading
things. "Basic Replication" is supported in 8i Standard, but
Advanced Replication was listed as a Feature of 8i Enterprise
    Edition.
FYI we are interested in using Standards support for Updateable
    Snapshots and "Basic Replication".
Anyways just hoping someone can clear things up for me.

No just the postcode checker, but the BT call center have confirmed that they think its odd, and when i did the home move order they have had to downgrade my package from infinity (currently get 60MB) to standard Option 3 adsl, they checked the other addresses and confirmed that mine was the only one that was saying no go

    Hi,
Reports runs in the OC4J_BI_Forms instance. You have to stop it to stop Reports. Unfortunately, you will also stop Forms. Not sure why Oracle included Start/Stop/Restart buttons for Reports - my experience has been they are useless. Note that Forms does not have these buttons.
Sorry, don't have any experience with virtual paths.

  • Oracle 8.0.5 installation on linux RH6.0 kernel 2.2.5-15

    Good evening.
I'm trying to install Oracle 8.0.5 on a machine running Linux RH 6.0 kernel 2.2.5-15.
I wish to obtain some information about how and where can I set the following parameters:
    SHMMAX
    SHMMIN
    SHMMNI
    SHMSEG
    SEMMNS
    SEMMNI
    SEMMSL
    PROCESSES
    Thanks forward for your help.

You'll have to be prepared to wade through and understand the Linux way of recompiling your kernel. The files can be located using the "find" command. There is some great "HOW-TO"s in the Linux RedHat site.
Tip: Be very careful how you answer the "make config" questions because it can mess up the resulting VMLINUZ object. Also, be sure to place secondary entry in your "lilo.conf" to allow you a graceful way of getting back to the old kernel should the new one fail.
    Good Luck!

  • Here's a solution to Oracle Startup / Shutdown on RH6

I had a hard time getting Red Hat 6.0 to startup and shutdown
Oracle properly. Red Hat's slick rc scripts look cool, but hide
the problem unless you do some serious reading.
This script still isn't perfect, mainly because it can't
shutdown if oracle users are still logged in. This is a problem
with the dbshut scripts. I try to avoid hacking Oracle's bin
directory, but if you really want to go down, change the
shutdown lines to shutdown immediate. Oracle, please provide an
option to dbshut to fix this! :-)
My changes to the book version fix the following:
    1. It creates a file /var/log/dbora to log the startup output to
give you some visibility after the fact.
    2. Creating the /var/lock/subsys/dbora file after startup makes
the shutdown work. Otherwise rc won't even try. Deleting it
makes changes between run levels work right.
    3. The startup is NOT backgrounded so that if you are watching
it boot you can at least gauge the time it takes before the
    startup.
    4. It starts the listener too.
    5. It checks the log file for startup errors and makes the
screen say FAILED in red if it sees any errors.
    5. It allows dbshut some time to finish before unmounting. My
dual xenon machine goes down do fast dbshut wouldn't finish
    downing both of my sids.
    # dbora -start/stop Oracle
    #action
    ORA_HOME=/home/oracle;export ORA_HOME
    ORA_OWNER=oracle;export ORA_OWNER
    if [ ! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME ]
    then
    echo "Oracle startup: cannot start"
    exit
    fi
    case "$1" in
    'start')
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c "$ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart" >
    /var/log/dbora.log
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c "$ORA_HOME/bin/lsnrctl start" >>
    /var/log/dbora.log
    touch /var/lock/subsys/dbora
    'stop')
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c $ORA_HOME/bin/dbshut &
    sleep 15
    rm -f /var/lock/subsys/dbora
    esac
if egrep -q "ORA-" /var/log/dbora.log; then
    exit -1
    else
    exit 0
    fi
Note that the links prescribed by the book are also incorrect.
Linux's rc levels do NOT run sequentially. Therefore, you need a
start and stop on the same level. If you want to save some RAM
on the serve by not running X, you'll want level 4 scripts and
level 5 scripts. So, Create all these links (as ROOT).
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc4.d/K10dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc4.d/S99dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/K10dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99dbora
To be really safe also create these links. This way there is no
    escaping a proper oracle shutdown.
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K10dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc1.d/K10dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/K10dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/K10dbora
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K10dbora
    Have fun!

It isn't necessary to create the symlinks for the rc scripts
manually--that's what the "chkconfig" command is for.

  • How to install oracle 8i On RH6.1?

I use jre-1.1.7 ,tcl7.5 and oracle patch to install oracle 8i on RH 6.1
1 ,rebuild the kernel as oracle told
    2 ,install jre-1.17
    3 ,do as oracle say
    4 ,run $oracle_home/install/linux/runins.sh
    not create database while installing
    5 ,install oracle patch
    6 ,install tcl
    7 ,./dbassist
    create database...
it said error "not logged on"
    I am crying
I struggle with this three days
    but I failed .
    I am so sad.
    Who can tell me?

After installing the jre exaclty in /usr/local/jre/bin and following the instructions in the Installation Guide for Intel-Linux I got the error in the database creation. Then I went to the shell prompt, checked the environment variables and started dbassist. This time successfully (without patches).

  • Root access denied on RH6.1 and Oracle 8.1.5

    I get:
    ORA-12546: TNS:permission denied
When running sqlplus as root... all other users can run it fine,
    ENV var's are all okay...
    Any ideas?

: Not sure, but I am not quite sure you should be running

    I agree,
Running any client or database utilities with Root is a bad
