Oracle Career Help

Hi,
I am new to Oracle though I am known to Oracle DBMS, SQL, PL/SQL, Fusion, SOA, ADF and so many terms, but I am unable to choose which technology I should focus on.
I am university student and want to develop my final project in Oracle. I need help from you buddies to help me choose the technology which will help me secure and find job in future. Just tell me popular technologies and available. Some of my friends told me to work on Oracle Form and Reports 10g, but I think that is an old technology.
Please help me choosing the technology.
Regards
Sarfraz

Why did I start my reply with that quote? Because I think you are focusing on the wrong thing. You should use your university time to explore several areas, and not all of them technology. Find out what you enjoy working with - application design? Database management and optimization? Networking? Security? How about geology? Chemistry? Literature? History? Expose yourself to several things, find what you truly enjoy and get very good at it. (If you really enjoy it, you will get very good at it). Employment will follow, and will be much more enjoyable than if you just pick "a technology" because you think it will provide the best employment. Odds are you'll be doing something else within 10 years anyway ( "Life Happens").

  • Oracle DBA Help

We have an Oracle 9i Database Standard Edition that is in production for about 3 years running on Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. Our company does not have Oracle DBA. When we purchased Oracle license we didn’t sign up for Oracle Support.
If something goes wrong with Oracle Database, if we could not figure out the solution on our own, is there any company that provides Oracle DBA help on a contract basis?
What happens if we get internal errors in the database? Can we still contact Oracle Support?
    Please advice.

#1. When you purchased Oracle Licenses, I guess Oracle would have provided (Support Identifier or CSI numbers), with that you should be able to create accounts/access with METALINK, which is one form of support Oracle provides. 99.99% of the day-to-day problems are resolved via metalink, oracle forms (like this) and other discussion threads.
#2. But if you want Oracle personnel onsite, then it needs a different contract or support level, which is very expensive in my opinion. There used to be different support levels like platinum, gold, silver etc., I'm not sure of the classification now, better contact Oracle for additional info.
I would highly recommend for #1, check the cost involved in #2 compare that with that of hiring a part-time/remote DBA, and see which one works better. If your database is not mission critical, configuring proper back and restore would help bring your database up, but with some downtime.
    Hope it helps,
    Babu Rangasamy

  • Oracle Career Path Advice

    hello,
I'm working in Oracle Inventory Purchasing & Finance modules support for end users.
For example:I have modified purchasing hierarchy several times and created a new inventory organization. Also, I have developed customized reports in oracle apps for purchasing and Inventory. But, I do not have any Oracle certification. I do believe that choosing a career path and getting certified will help enahance my carrer opportunities.
can somebody advise me on which oracle courses to take and which oracle certification to go after?
    Thank you...

I believe there are lot of oil companies in Nigeria are recruiting DBA's.
All you have to do is to read the manuals and be strong in concepts.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/server.101/b10742/toc.htm
Also install and practice oracle at home.
    All the best.

  • Oracle career beginning

Before I start my second year of University I'm hoping to have achieved my OCA Certification. I would like to know from personal experience how you started your career with Oracle database? What I've read so far suggests a good place to start is as a Database developer.
I have recently discovered that it has been announced that the route I'm taking for my degree will have a DBA module next year which I'm pleased about!
    Many thanks
    Mike

I would suggest you start reading Oracle documents,
    http://tahiti.oracle.com/
Especially, Oracle Concept, Performance Tuning Guide. Get better understanding and grip of how things work inside Oracle.
Get out of the 'better not crash' mode as soon as possible. When you get better knowledge of the database you are managing. You will gain confident and not afraid of crashing. Because you will know what to do in the event of disaster and have a plan.
Besides just managing the database itself (backup/recovery,patch etc), try to understand the data it storing and applications it serving. That will help a lot when you do performance tuning and capacity planning.

  • Oracle career with unix scripting?

    hi
iam working in a reputed mnc with CMMi level 5 .started as fresher (BE I.T) i have around 1.6 years of experiance in unix scripting/oracle sql production support.
with learning of sql and shell scripting
i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic, learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.
could anyone please guide me about what career path i should choose ?
DBA , i have heard is montonous job too with same routine backups,no creativity with nightshifts and all, but it is more stable as people said. I have no experiance of it.
second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BO
i don`t have any info about others areas like that i would like to explore
    1)Datawarehousing
    2)Oracle apps
    3)Business objects (BO reporting)
    4)Oracle CRM etc
5)Others (thats all i know, please add some others if they are creative )
iam really confsused now which way to chosse. and how to jump in other company on wat basis?
preparing for OCA right now but uncertain for career.
Seeking good help from forum experts.

"with learning of sql and shell scripting"
Ah, very good move, so you must pick my tool, it is all about managing Oracle DB through Korn shell http://www.smenu.org.
As of your question, the answer is in your mood and preference.
Oracle DBA: Definitely more money, less opportunity. the job is dwindling somehow due to Grid automation and budget restriction.
It is not that you don't need DBA, but manager thinks they can do without and don't (try) replace them. Pressure on DBA is a myth: more work = more money = happy DBA until wife run away.
Developer : Definitely less money, not necessary more opportunity unless you have java EE. no shift but more pressure: Projects are always in late, usually in the development area, not in the infrastructure.
One funny thing I noticed during these last 15 years, is that DBA have usually more children than others people (unix sys admin or Dev). Probably related to better earning.
DBA can be boring or passionate depending on your own knowledge, most of others DBA I know are still in the job, only one is now JAVA EE guy.

ResultSets based on a wildcard are generally treated as views by Oracle, meaning they are not updatable no matter how you create your statement. Try either "select swa.* from sw_assets swa" or "select all from sw_assets swa", that should get around the problem.
Also (just being thorough) make sure that you specifically created your statement as being updatable (stmt = conn.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE, ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE) ).
I would not normally expect a NullPointerException when encountering this "feature", but then I don't often use the ODBC bridge.
Good luck! I hope this helps.

    Hi Leon,
Thanks for your quick revert, but just wondering if Banking domain is good for FI/Co, as I guess it has more to do with Finance and not Retail Banking, I in the mean time searched another Module for Banking Industry called IS- Banking..I think, this module will be in line with the Banking Exp but whats the demand of this module in Banking sector that has to be seen!!

I followed the articles in oracle site to loadjava jar files (soap.jar, dms.jar, ejb.jar, jssl-1_1.jar, mail.jar, servlet.jar) into Oracle DB 9i before invoke jpub to gen stub class and wrappers in oracle 9i but i have many errors such as ora-29534 and ora-29521. As consequence i could not invoke jpublisher to generate code.
Pls. help my with detail guide to overcome these errors, thanks in advance! My DB is Oracle 9.2.0.5

I don't know if anyone can help me based off this, since I know it's not really what the main post says to provide, but it's all I was given.
My IT department also made a few changes to my original query (see below) and told me it got rid of one of the full scans of the PACT table, but they aren't sure why it helped, and I have to say I'm suspect of any fixes where it's not understood why it helped.

    Hi,
    Well, let's see.
You get 156 rows returned using IN and 121 rows using exists.
You need identify the 'missing records' and conclude if that's correct or not, I'm not able to do that from remote, without knowing your data or system.
It would be helpful if we could see cost and cardinalities, you (or your IT dept.) can get them easily be running the queries from your SQL*Plus prompt.
    Type
SET AUTOTRACE TRACEONLYbefore running the queries.
That gives you the explain plan and additional statistics (sorts in memory and sorts to disk).
Since you use a group by, and you're on 8i can you also post results of these queries:
    select banner from v$version;
select name, value, isdefault from v$parameter where name like '%area%';Finally, does below query give you a different plan?
    select oord.part_nbr
    ,      oord.ord_nbr
    ,      oord.sub_ord_nbr
    ,      pact.major_seq_nbr
    ,      sopn.wctr_id
