Except for statistics_level , I don't think that there is any other parameter which is there and its not normally touched. So what did you choose to get to the conclusion that both the things are disabled? Are you getting the error, disconnection forced, connection terminated ? If yes, post here the pfile that you have used to startup this instance as well. The alert log file is under the background_dump_dest folder(as suggested already) . What's underneath that folder, is it there in the first place?

  • Drop database deletes the alert log

    Hi DBA's ,
I ran into a strange situation i never faced before.
We have a Oracle database version 11.2.0.3.0.
This is dev db which i had to refresh from production via rman.
After the  drop database command finished all the contents of my trace folder dissapered including the alert log.
Has anyone faced this situation before or help me understand what happened

himmy, if you are dropping the database why would you need the old alert.log or any other diagnostic directory files?  Ideally if you drop a database there should be no record of it left on the system when the drop completes.  Why is this a problem?
If you are refreshing the database from production then instead of dropping the database and creating a new database via rman restore perhaps you should be using either the export/import transportable tablespace feature to move the files or traditional export/import of the data.

  • Cloud Control 12c monitoring Oracle 11g Standard Edition alert.log

    Hi guys.
I just installed Cloud Control 12c3 and added my cluster database, I have readed many papers, tech docs and tech discuss and now i have a huge confussion about packs, licensing and other fruits. Please help...
I have four Oracle 11g databases (differents hosts) Standard Edition, and i want monitoring and notificate alert.log errors. For example, if alert.log says "ORA-01438, blablabla" i want a email notification.
I read about packs, and says that "diagnostic pack" is needed for alert.log monitoring in Cloud Control 12c. But my version database is Standard Edition without packs, so I CAN'T MONITORING ALERT LOG!!!.
    Question:
Do I really need Diagnostic Pack for monitoring alert.log with Cloud Control?
If Diagnostinc Pack is not necessary, how can i monitoring alert.log?
    Thanks

I do not think you require any pack for alert.log content monitoring but you might need to check with Oracle rep. I am saying so because if you go to the "Alert log content" page and click on management pack for this page, Grid will display a message that this page does not require any pack.
Go to the Alert log content by "oracle database -> logs -> alert log contents"
    then
go to SETUP -> management packs -> packs for this page
You will see the message will be displayed " this pages does not require any pack"
Can you also provide the doc where it says that this pae needs diagnostic pack?

  • Bouncing Oracle Database Creating Broken Pipe Error On Oracle 9iAS 9.0.3

We published and deployed PL/SQL web services using JDeveloper 9.0.3 wizard on Oracle 9iAS 9.0.3. We bounced the database nightly, in turn, closes the application server connection between 9iAS and the database. This causes the broken pipe error. Bouncing the 9iAS is not an option for us.
Is this an Oracle 9iAS bug? Is there a workaround to this problem without bouncing the application server?
    Please help.

I have discovered a strange thing. I created a new OC4J instance which I called it: Intelap

  • IBM HACMP + Oracle Database 9i ( without RAC ) Install

    Hi all,
Is there any document or installation guide about installing Oracle 9i on HACMP ?
I found that if I installed HACMP first, and later install Oracle 9i , it will be installed in a "clustered way".
I mean when i install Oracle 9i after HACMP, OUI will ask me for choosing node1 or node2 to install, just like I've installed Oracle Clusterware (but i haven't installed Oracle Clusterware).
    Is it normal ?
Or should I install Oracle 9i first then HACMP ?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Best Regards.

    Dear Virendra,
    Thanks for the reply.
I found that If I installed HACMP first, OUI will detect it and Oracle Clusterware will be installed automatically.
So I need to choose the "Custom" mode to install Oracle 9i and deselect Oracle Clusterware manually. By this way Oracle 9i could be installed in an single instance way.
After that I just need to use dbca to create my database in SAN storage、install Oracle binary on node2 and copy some files from Node1 to Node2.
My problem is solved. Thanks for all the reply.
    Best regards.

When oralce starts every first time, oracle does create a alert log file and whenever oracle wants to update the alertlog file, it updates the existing one and in case of missing alert log, it re-create the alert log and updates it.

alert log contains database activities list carried out in the related database.
trace file can be generated due to number of reasons, like, hardware problems, due to oracle internal errors, user errors, whenever you trace a session and etc.

  • Rogue alert log in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

Hi there, have looked all over and not yet found the answer to my query. I have a database instance running at 10.2.0.4.0. There is a rougue alert-{ORACLE_SID}.log created in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory when an instance is started. Show parameter background_dump_dest points to the correct directory - $ORACLE_ADMIN/$ORACLE_SID/bdump wether using spfile or pfile.  To confirm what is happening I shutdown the instance and deleted both alert logs from the two locations and restarted the instance. Again two alert logs were created. Can anyone please advise why this is happening. I have found threads suggesting that logs are created in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs as default if parameters are not set correctly, but this is creating an alert log in two locations at startup.
    in $ORACLE_ADMIN/$ORACLE_SID/bdump/alert_DBAASS06.log shows -

Adjusting the default value of parameter parallel_max_servers

Thanks for the reply. The cloned database source looks like it uses spfile on startup on the test box, but as I hadn't checked this at the time it was cloned, the spfile was not copied over, so I'm assuming it would have used the default init.ora created which had the correct dump dest defined. As for the new database, it was created from scratch, so I don't see why this should not work correctly. Unfortunately as I am new to this establishment, I have no history as to how Oracle was installed on either machine or how any of the other databases were created, though I do understand that many may have been cloned.
So while I can't speak for the databases that already existed on the Dev box, it seemed weird that they all appeared to be doing the same thing.  So I found one that hadn't been started for a while for which there was no historic alert log in dbs and started it to see what happened. It had no spfile, started with pfile and did not create a rogue log. I created an spfile and restarted and still no rouge log.  I ran show paremeters and compared to another similar database that had a rougue log, DASSEN02 v DASSEN04 and the only differences were with the instance name and all the files (bdump, cdump etc) existed correctly. Had a further look ref RMAN as some but not all databases had snapcf files in the dbs directory, but again some that had snap files had rougue alert files and others didn't. Also double checked file permissions on the bdump directory, no issues there. Unexplained issues really do bug me, but I think I'll just have to live with not knowing for now, till I have a spare few hours to look at again.

  • Delete content in alert.log file

    hii,
Presently, i am working at oracle 10g database on windows 2003 server.
alter.log file size is 432 MB around which take several time time to open.
so, how can i delete content form alert.log file to reduce size
    Regards
    Vaibhav

    Hi,
No need to delete contents of alertlog.
just rename the alert log file or copy to another location and delete old one, then it will automatically creates new alert log file with format alert_<sid>.log
    note:
    no need of database bounce.

  • Multiple Oracle Databases in a Single Windows Server

    Hi all,
I have Windows Server System which has oracle database created.
    My question is:-
How can i create multiple databases on the same server without affecting the first created database & i want to use the both databases at a time?
Please give the steps to do multiple databases in the same server if possible..
    Thanks in advance,

Oracle scales by adding more servers to a single physical database. This is called Oracle RAC.
You want to add more physical databases to a single server - doing the exact opposite of what Oracle offers as a scalable solution.
Please give the steps to do multiple databases in the same server if possible..No special steps. Run DBCA and create a new database instance. In other words, the exact same steps followed for creating the 1st database on that server.
Also make sure you fully understand WHAT you are doing and the IMPLICATIONS of that. An Oracle database is not the same as a mySQL or SQL-Server database. An Oracle Schema is a logical database - and compares to what a mySQL/SQL-Server database is.
And a single Oracle database can contain 1000s of logical databases (schemas). Each with their own dedicated storage, own security, own resource profile, etc.
    Oracle is not mySQL/SQL-Server.
    Understanding the differences is important.

  • Grep in alert.log

Hello, i want to grep the startup time from the Database in the alert.log
But grep "Starting ORACLE instance" alert.log returns only the Starting String.
I need also the Date line. Has anybody a solution with sed or awk where i can extract the Date line an the startup line from the Alert.log?
    regards
    Frank

Take a look at the grep manual pages:
    OPTIONS
    -A NUM, --after-context=NUM
Print NUM lines of trailing context after matching lines. Places a line containing -- between contigu-
    ous groups of matches.
    -B NUM, --before-context=NUM
Print NUM lines of leading context before matching lines. Places a line containing -- between contigu-
    ous groups of matches.
There are options which will grep After or Before the selected line.
