Oracle database reorganization (moving datafiles to new filesystems)

Hi All,
We are planning to perform a database reorganization (moving datafiles to new filesystems) in our Production environment using SAPDBA.
We had noticed in our recent performance reports that few datafiles in some of the SAPDATAxx filesystems are having higher I/O contention and are putting heavy load on those filesystems resulting in poor performance. So, we had identified the datafiles and planning to move them to new SAPDATA filesystems (uniformly distribute the datafiles to stabilize the I/O). Below are the version information.
SAP: 3.0F
Oracle: 9.2.0.8
OS: HP-UX 11.23
SAPDBA: 6.20
I'm going through SAP notes and Oracle documentation on this. Can you please share your experiences if similar activity was carried out by any of you and the documents relating to this.
Your inputs on this is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Vasu

If your goal is just to make use of new storage, it is fairly straightforward and quick to move the datafiles as others mentioned. However, moving the datafile will NOT reorganize tables/tablespaces.
You can optionally reorg tables/tablespaces in addition to the move of datafiles. This generally saves space and helps performance. If you decide to reorg, I would suggest you move the datafiles to faster storage then reorg (since reorg itself is highly IO intensive).
Some points to consider:
- perform the reorg when business use is least
- perform online reorg where possible
- online reorg creates temporary snaps, typically in the users default tablespace, make sure it has sufficient space
- start with small tables/tablespaces first to get throughput estimate and also estimate of reduction in size
- estimate the size of target tablespace (how small it is going to be compared to source) and build the target tablespace smaller to avoid wasting space
- watch the space usage of the target tablespace when the reorg is running
- if you are reorging individual tables, make sure the indexes are rebuilt
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Shan

    Dear Sir,
JD3.* could connecting Oracle database 8.05 but not new version of Oracle_Database at all(8I and 9I in OTN version), but could run on Borland JBuilder.

Steve -- My guess would be that you need to upgrade your JDBC drivers for your client program. They are downloadable from OTN. I expect that JBuilder has its own JDBC drivers which are newer than what you have and that is why it does not have a problem.

  • Oracle Database Reorganization

    hi,
Planning to reorg oracle database for apo. This involves transparent tables and also cubes. Is there any SAP recommended Oracle reorg strategy / guide for doing so.
would appreciate any detailed guide is available.
    Thanks,
    RajS

    Hi,
You can perform online database reorg on APO system. An online
reorganization is online per definition, so it doesn't interfere on a
logical consistency layer with other system components.
The online reorg need additional CPU, disk space and other system
resources. If possible, we do not recommend to do the online reorg when
you have heavy workload on the system.

    I suppose that is nice.
It would be even nicer if the drivers actually conformed to JDBC so that one could for example reliably use blobs in a J2EE server with CMP.

  • Changes to be made in EP server during Oracle database migration

    Hi,
Currently we have a scenario where both our Oracle database 10.2 and NW 7.0 server are on same system which has got the hardware configuration as 32 bit 2003 windows machine. Due to memory constraints DB team is planning to migrate the database in to another system which is of 64 bit unix OS.
Now before they migrate the Oracle database from current system to new system i wanted to know on what all parameters and changes have to carried out from NW/ EP end so that after the database is moved EP points to the same Oracle database in the new system and runs smoothly.

This is a heterogeneous migration (you change the operating system) - which requires a certified migration consultant to do that task. If you do it on your own you will loose support for the target system (see http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration)

You will have to use the Java export/import method, not copying database files over.
Check the official system copy guides.

  • Loading XML files to an oracle database

    Hi,
I have some users who would like to send me XML files that I would need to parse and load into multiple tables in my Oracle database. Since I'm new to XML, I'd like to know if XMK DB is the technology that I need to explore in order to do this, and if so, are there any white papers or articles out there that might get me started.
I have previously loaded data into my databases via text files that I parsed using text_io, I'm not sure if there is a significant advantage in using XML. This data load is going to be on an regular basis and I would like to validate the data the data before loading this.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Azeem.

XML is becoming the defacto method of exchanging data between systems due to it's self describing nature. XML DB is the preferred way of processing XML in Oracle 9iR2 and later. The banner for this forum provides links to the XML DB OTN pages where you can find lots of information related to using XML DB.

  • Oracle - Move datafiles to a new filesystem

    Hi,
We have an ERP system running on HP-UX with Oracle database.
To stick with SAP recommendation, the filesystems holding the datafiles should have a blocksize of 8192K. We have 5 filesystem of 2 TB for the datafiles of the production system, and 3 have a blocksize of 1024k instead of 8192k.
The safest strategy would be to:
    - Stop SAP and DB
    - Copy the datafiles of these 3 filesystems to 3 new filesystem with a blocksize of 8192K
    - Adapt the mount points
    - Restart the DB and SAP
The problem with this strategy is that it is very time consuming, and will need a long downtime to complete it.
We have another strategy in mind:
    - Putting the database in backup mode
    - Copying all the datafiles (for the 5 filesystems) to new filesystems
    - Putting the database back in normal mode
    - Stopping SAP and the DB
    - Changing the mounting points to the new filesystems
    - Starting up the database and recover it (applying all the logs)
    - Starting SAP
This should help us reducing the downtime.
Can you advise if it is a valid strategy ? Do you have any other idea on how we could proceed ?
Thanks in advance for your help :-)
    Antoine

    Hi Antoine,
well from a technical point of view this is valid, but to be honest it is slow as well and it includes many manual error-prone activities. Nowadays there is no reason for not using RMAN
The fastest and safest method (in my opinion) would be the following:
Create the 3 new file systems
Perform full image copy backup of corresponding data files to that file system
Perform incremental backups (with block change tracking) and apply them to the corresponding image file copies (Rolling Forward Image Copy Backups)
Perform the last incremental backup (with block change tracking) and apply it right before shutdown of SAP
    Shutdown SAP
Use RMAN to switch to data file copy (in new file system)
Use RMAN to recover data files, which should take only a few seconds to minutes depending on the load between step 4 and 5.
    Start SAP

  • New IP-address or hostname change affect Oracle database?

    Hello,
Our Oracle database servers will be moving to a different location that we might have to change to new IP-addresseses or host names. I was told that we might have to re-install all Oracle homes and databases. Is it true? And generally, what else do I need to concern about when we decide to change the IP address or hostname?
Thank you so much in advance.

    Is it true?NO!
Oracle RDBMS does not know or care about anything involving IP#.
In fact Oracle RDBMS can run OK, without the system having ANY network interface.

  • Moving an Oracle Database from Solaris to AIX

    Hi all,
I have been asked to move an SAP system using an Oracle database from
Solaris to AIX (on an IBM P590).
Most of the move is straightforward, except the Oracle database
transfer. It would make my life so much easier if I could simply
restore the Oracle datafiles from an off-line backup of the Solaris
system and then link it to a clean install of the Oracle binaries on
the AIX system, rather than have to do an export and import.
Is this possible, after all the AIX Oracle binaries would be the same
patch level as the Solaris binaries and the file systems would be the
same. Also as it would be an offline backup we would not have to do
any recovery, so the archive logs and the original redo logs would not
    be required.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has actually executed it
successfully, any hints and tips on the gotchas would be greatly
    appreciated.
    TIA
    Chris aka BoobBoo

    Hello Chris,
unfortunately you didn't write anything about your oracle version or your backup mechanism like RMAN,etc..
I think you will use Solaris on a SPARC architecture and not on x86? (same endian)
If you have RMAN and 10gR2 then you can use the "Database Transport Across Same Endian Platforms":
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/wnbradv.htm
    > RMAN now supports the CONVERT DATABASE command, which can prepare a whole database for transport to a new platform that uses the same endian format. Database transport across platforms provides a faster and easier way to move databases from one platform to another than previous solutions requiring the use of Data Pump.
Metalinknote #413586.1 has a FAQ and a step on step guide.
If you have created your tablespaces under Oracle 10g (no oracle upgrade from previous releases!!) you can use the "Transportable tablespace feature" and copy the database files. SAP has published note #1035051 for that.

  • Creating a new database in Oracle Database 10g...

I have downloaded a copy of Oracle Database 10g Express Edition from Oracle's website. I am using Windows XP. I am trying to create an Oracle database that I can connect to from Access 2003 via ODBC.
    1. How do I create a new database? I can see options to create tables, views, etc. but not a database.
    2. I have created a System DSN connection in the ODBC Data Source Administrator for the Oracle ODBC driver. Once I create a database in Oracle, how do I actually establish a connection to it from Access? The ODBC code to connect is there, but when I run it, I get an error.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. How do I create a new database? I can see options to create tables, views, etc. but not a database. If you can see those options then you are already connected to the database. You probably want to create a user, not a database (are you by chance coming from SQL Server?)
driver={OracleDriver};Dbq=TESTDBQ;Uid=Administrator;Pwd=;You would replace "Administrator" with the name of the user you created in the database.

I figure out you are trying to install 10gR2 on top of an existing 9iR2 Oracle Home. This is corrected at the Path definition window. Most probably you just click on the <Next> and by default the 9iR2 Oracle Home was selected. You must define a new oracle home for the 10gR2 install.

  • Create a new oracle database from OCI or OCCI client

    Hi,
How can we create a new oracle database from OCI or OCCI client?
i am using the oracle 11gR2

So connect as OCI_SYSDBA and try executing the entire create database command.
