Oracle DB licensing for APEX applications

Scenario:
Currently we use Oracle EE 10g with an intranet application system(using oracle technology stack) and let's say the # of named users are' X'. We are considering using APEX for a customer faced application so that customers can view their information online. The # of customers that use the APEX based application would be 5000.We are planning to go for custom authentication where by customers register themselves and use e-mail id as their userid.
Questions:
1. I was told that we could create a generic user for our customer(s) so that they could all log into the database
as one named user so that the # of named users are X+1. Hence it just requires an additional named user license. If so, how that generic user works?
2. With one application user with multiple connections, how does the licensing model differs to the one that we currently have?
3. Using APEX, if an application(public user) is deployed in production and public(unlimited # of users) access the application, how does the licensing for Oracle database affects. Do we need to go by processor based licensing? Is so, it is very expensive and could be cost prohibitive. Is there any cost effective solution?
I have gone through the following thread Re: How is an Apex solution priced if one is using standard 11g? However, I am looking for a specific answers my questions above.
Thanks in advance.

John is correct. Named user has NOTHING to do with database users / schemas. Just because your whole app runs as one schema does not mean you only need one named user. Named users are people, no matter how they connect. As John stated, if you have an additional 5,000 users, you'll need to up your named-user licensing by 5,000. However, per-CPU licensing is probably much more cost-effective with those numbers.
As for more cost-effective options, there are several. It might be much cheaper to use a cheaper version of the database on a different machine. You could take a look at Standard Edition (SE), Standard Edition One, or even XE (free). It all depends on what features you need.
Since you are going from Intranet to Internet, make sure you consider the security implications carefully. At the very least I would make sure the HTTP Server is NOT on the same machine as the Database. I would put the HTTP Server in your DMZ and your Database either fully inside your intranet or at least a behind a second firewall. You should probably review "Project Lockdown" for more details:

  • Microsoft Office can't find your license for this application - multiple copies of Office 2013 x32 failing to start, Software Protection Service timing out

We're experiencing a growing problem with our users in several different domains running in to Microsoft Office 2013 x32 'activation' issues.  We use KMS for licensing, which works properly, but some of the machines (~20-30 out of 1000+) sporadically
    throw the following error:
'Microsoft Office can't find your license for this application.  Microsoft Office will now exit.'
We know it's not an issue with the licenses per se, since they work on and off and we can force KMS activation correctly / talk to the KMS servers.
It appears to be an issue with the Software Protection service not starting properly.  In Event Viewer, we see the following:
'Software protection service failed to start due to the following error- the service did not respond in a timely fashion.
    Event 7000'
This is occurring on a variety of machines in a variety of environments, all fully patched with the latest Office updates.  It's inconsistent, and the 'manually restart the Software Protection Service' solution is not viable as it's occurring on many
different workstations.  Office repairs have also been unsuccessful.
Has anyone else come across this? Or have any idea why the Software Protection Service might be sporadically failing?  Maybe an Office update in the last 2-3 months?
    Thanks for any info.

  • App-V 5.0 Sequencing Office 2010 - Cannot verify the License for this Application KMS

    Hey Guys,
i already found some Topics about my Problem, but None of the Solutions i have found, help in my case. I hope someone can help...
I Sequenced Office 2010 Professional Plus x86 on an App-V 5.0 Sequencer Client (x64) and streamed it to Windows 7 x64 and Windows Server 2012. While i was sequencing, i followed the Articles at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_resource_kit/archive/2011/06/15/sequencing-office-2010-for-app-v-part-1-considerations.aspx and also used the Parameter:
    msiexec/i OffVirt.msi ADDLOCAL=Click2runMapi,Click2runOWSSupp,Click2runWDS,OSpp,OSpp_Core PROPLUS=1
In the sequencing Process anything ist working fine, i can start Word, Excel... and Office is activated. When i publish the Application and stream to the Client or RDS, i get the Error message in the Screenshot.
I also tried to create a new Package and type in the KMS Client Key directly to Office, didnt work. In a third Sequencing Process (also new Sequence) i tried with an another Script what i have found: msiexec /i OffVirt.msi PROPLUS=1 KMSSERVICENAME=”SERVERNAME”
    KMSSERVICEPORT=1688
    Please help!!
    Best regards

I am having this same exact issue; however, I have done everything in the App-V 5.0 Sequencing document, and I have enabled Set-AppVClientConfiguration -EnablePackageScripts 1.
The sequencer is on a Win 7 32-bit machine, so I used the following:
    msiexec
    /i OffVirt.msi ADDLOCAL=OSpp,OSpp_Core PROPLUS=1
KMS is registered in DNS, so I shouldn't have to specify KMS.
As soon as I start Office on a machine, setup screen comes up briefly, and then I see the:
"Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this application. A repair attempt failed or was canceled by the user. The application will now shut down."
I would use the package accelerator; however, it's a new Pro Plus 2010 build, and it says 12 files are missing from the install (files like the actual OffVirt.msi and manifest files).
This is getting a little frustrating, as I've already tried the package 4 different times. I also tried this version:
    msiexec/i OffVirt.msi ADDLOCAL=Click2runMapi,Click2runOWSSupp,Click2runWDS,OSpp,OSpp_Core PROPLUS=1
I am also using the latest SP2 client, Sequencer, and then the AppV 5.0 SP1 server is using the latest hotfix 4 which was released in April 2014.

  • Create time-limited license for my application

    Hi,
I have created an application for my client, but i would like to add in a function below into my software for license renew.
For example, after the application is used in a PC for one year, it will be locked and will ask user to renew the license, to activate the application again.
Is there anyway can create the time-limited license for my application?
My application is developed by LV 8.5.1.
I am appreciated for your feedback.
    Thanks.

The Third Party Licensing & Activation Toolkit will do what you want, but you need LabVIEW 2010 or later.
There was even a NI-Week presentation: NIWeek Session: Creating a Software Evaluation for your Product in 10 minutes
Still, I agree with Norbert that an expiring licens is a very dumb idea. What if you go out of business? What if you are on vacation while their license expires? What is the system is on a space flight to Mars?
I would never install software that expires, because if it cannot be guaranteed that it will run a year from now I might as well not use it at all.  If NI would do the same, your LabVIEW 8.5 would have stopped working long ago.
If you want to ensure that users upgrade to a new version, make sure to add new and exciting features. Offer service subscriptions, etc.

  • Oracle database licenses for 32 bit and 64 bit ?

    Quick question on Oracle Licensing.
We have brought Oracle database license for 10g few years ago. We had 10g 32-bit database installed and its working fine.
Now we are in the process of migrating our hardware to 64-bit, since Oracle database has a 64-bit database, we are planning to move our database as well to 10g 64-bit database.
Now as far as licensing is concerned, do we need to buy new licenses in order to use the 10g 64-bit database ?
or its the same license for 32 or 64 bit database - so we are good ?

You can migrate your Oracle license from one platofrm to another even if the platform is sold by a different manufacturer. If you have cpu licenses though you have to take into consideration the different way Oracle charges for some vendor CPU's. That is not all CPU's are considered equal.
The licensing information is available at oracle.com and your sales representive should be able to help if necessary. We just open an SR and ask Oracle for assistance to get the necessary software.

    Hi ,
You can create a single dynamic distribution group with the condition to have only the mailboxes in exchange as its members . Then when a person send an email to that  Dynamic distribution group it will get distributed to all the mailboxes
    in exchange.
Note : Most important feature in the dynamic group is that the membership of that group will be maintained automatically and also along with that we can have group membership by defining the recipient types/OU /rules.
I agree with ED and also based on my knowledge you cannot achieve your scenario without Distribution groups or dynamic distribution groups.

  • Oracle Functional Testing for Web Applications for Oracle Apps

I am trying to test Oracle Application 11i and R12 using Oracle Functional Testing for Web Applications.
    In 11i:
If i open any forms then then the Application is getting crashed whereas it's recording the html events.
    In R12:
If i open any forms then the Form is getting opened but it's not recording the events happening on the forms
whereas it's recording the html events.
Please let me know whether Oracle Functional Testing for Web Applications supports can be used to test Oracle Apps 11i/R12 including the Forms.
    Regards,
    Arun

    Hi,
AFAIK, there is no official document which states that "Oracle Functional Testing for Web Applications" is certified with Oracle E-Business Suite 11i/R12. I assume it should work with Forms 10g but not with Forms 6i, so it should work (does not mean it is certified) with R12.
I would suggest you log a SR and confirm this with Oracle Support.

microsoft office can't find your license for this application.  A repair attempt was unsuccessful or was cancelled.  microsoft office will exit
Please do help me for the same.  I have a valid license even updated the same today itself.
    Thanks

    Same issue, different question!
my problem is that all my office apps hangs, then freeze and not responding (not even in /safe) and as the normal step of troubleshooting, I restarted my computer to safe mode in order to see if it happens because any third party process or service in the
    background.
I get the same error! "Microsoft office can't find your license for this application"
In safe mode it is impossible to start the "Software Protection" service.
this was a base troubleshooting step up until Office 2010. what is the solution with Office 2013? (obviously, I'm not talking about clean boot, but safemode!)

  • How I can use my domain name for APEX Application at Oracle Cloud?

    Hello,
    1. I have for example my-custom-domain.com and want that my customers use this domain to login at APEX Application at Oracle Cloud.
I don't want that my customers see https://blablabla.db.us1.oraclecloudapps.com/apex/ and see instead of my-custom-domain.com :)
How I can do it? Don't find any technical information about it...
    2. Can I use my ssl certificates for my domain for Oracle Cloud Instance?

may be I don't understand you right...
I have trial instance and test application here at https://database-trialajnn.db.us1.oraclecloudapps.com/apex/f?p=1500304
    database-trialajnn.db.us1.oraclecloudapps.com - it's 216.131.136.193 IP
I write to my domain this IP = login.ds24.ru
    But when I test https://login.ds24.ru/apex/f?p=1500304

  • Choose the appropriate and cheapest license for Apex

    Dear Experts,
If a customer likes Oracle Apex and want his system to be built with this technology on his private server but he has problems in expensive license of Oracle Database compared with MS SQL Server.
    If the customer has:
    - Planned No. of users: 25 user - max of 10 concurrent users.
    - Server Processor: Intel Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz 2.53GHz - 64bit
    - Server RAM:  4GB (I think it is too low for his number of users)
    I have the following questions:
    1) What is the cheapest and appropriate Oracle Database License to buy for this customer to build Oracle Apex system for his users?
    2) What are the cheapest and recommended upgrades in the server processor and RAM in order to provide a good performance for the system with that number of users?
    Best Regards
    Mahmoud

    Dear Scott,
Thank you for reply. If we look at:
Comparison between Oracle Database 12c Editions
We will find the following features not available in Express Edition compared to Standard Edition One
    1) High Availability - Fail Safe
    2) High Availability - Server Managed Backup and Recovery
    3) Performance and Scalability - Integrated Clusterware
    4) Security Defense In Depth - Proxy Authentication
    5) Application Development - Oracle Flashback Data Archive
    6) Application Development - SQL Pattern Matching
    7) Application Development -  Temporal Database
    8) Application Development - Java Support
    9) Manageability - Oracle Enterprise Manager
    10) Manageability - Oracle Automatic Storage Management
    11) Integration - Based Replication
    12) Unstructured Data Management - Multimedia
    13) RAM - 1GB
    - Do I need to plan for some of those features in the first or second release of system? especially those related to backup?
    - Is RAM 1 GB too low for good performance according to the number of concurrent users?
    - Do I need to upgrade or replace the Server HW specially processor to have a good performance or upgrading RAM only is enough?
    Regards

  • Suggested Licensing for our applications

    Hello:
This is my first post, so this will seem like a very inexperienced question. I'm currently evaluating the purchase of Oracle 10g Standard for our company. It is a relatively small company. One of our applications has 12-20 concurrent users accessing the database at a time, but on a very light level (that's the most widely used application).
I'm curious as to what licensing options we should consider, and what are the limitations. Does a "5 Named Users" mean that all application users wont be able fetch the data at the same time? Or does that type of licensing refer to the quantity of "accounts" (user1, user2, user3) we may have on a server? Currently all users connect under the same account for each application (we create an account per application and provide appropriate access to the required database for each), so we have around 6 different accounts.
We are using SQL Server at the time, but we are starting to see the need for increased performance since one of our applications is what we consider data-intensive (when compared to our company size). Our server has two Xeon processors, does that mean that a "Named Users" License wont apply?
When the suggestion of using Oracle appeared, a co-worker expressed that he understood that, while the cost of the DBMS is affordable, the required hardware is too costly. I tend to differ. Im assuming that I will be able to host the Database Server in our existing hardware. Am I correct?
    Specs:
    2x Xeon 3.0Ghz
    4GB DDR2
    Dell Rack Server PE2650
    Raid 1 and Raid 5 (around 200GB)
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but Im no DB expert, I just consider myself a pseudo-functional user.
    Regards,
    Roberto Rivera

Your machine should work fine. However, I would not use Standard edition, I would use Standard Edition ONE which is specifily restricted to machines with a maximum of 2 processors. The costs follow.
If you want to pay a single fee for unlimited use of the database, then you would pay $5000.00 US dollars. If you want to pay per person then it would be $149.00 per person with a minimum of 5 people. Named users mean that if you have 20 employees that use the database, then you need to purchase 20 licenses even if only 5 users at a time would access the database. both solutions seem to be not so easy to understand.
the blog solution produces errors and where do i have to put:
    my $configfile = "/export/home/oracle/HTMLDB/htmldbvirtual.conf";
i testing on a windows system at the moment, later on unix
the other solution in the posting from Jes i tried it like that:
    <VirtualHost *>
              ServerName localhost/test
              ServerAlias localhost/test
              ErrorLog /wwwlogs/error_log
              CustomLog /wwwlogs/custom_log combined
              ProxyPreserveHost On
              RewriteEngine On
              RewriteRule ^/$ /pls/htmldb/f?p=101:1 [R]

              ProxyPassReverse /pls/htmldb http://localhost:7777/pls/htmldb
              ProxyPass /i http://localhost:7777/i
              ProxyPassReverse /i http://localhost:7777/i
              </VirtualHost>
but it dont works, what do i have to change?

  • Licensing for Forms Application (Database and Application Server)

I was going to give Oracle a call, but I wanted to run this buy you guys before I did so.
I am a developer trying to find a niche creating a custom software application. I have two ideas (partially developed), but before I continue, I want to determine the costs to my target customer/audience.
The application is Forms and Reports based (Oracle 6i). I can deploy the application as the 6i runtime clients, or I can migrate the application to Oracle Forms 10g. In both of those deployments, what would be the cost to me? From what I understand, please correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that I will have the following costs:
Product (quantity) = Cost / ALS
    Oracle Developer license (1) = $460 / $102
    Oracle Database - standard edition one (5 users) = $900 / $200
    If web deployment:
    Oracle Application Server - standard edition one (5 users) = $900 / $200
So $2260 for web deployment (5 users) and $1360 for client/server (5 user) application - Is that correct? I am trying to write customized applications for the mom and pop shops in my area. There is no way they will even consider paying that kind of money for my application (the above prices does not include any profit for me, either - ugh!).
What options do I have (if any)?
Thanks in advance for your feedback,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Please call up the Oracle Embedded Business Unit or the associated rep in your area. They will help you with the right licensing options.
If you let me know which country you are in, I can point you to the right person too.
