Oracle Demand Planning or Demantra?

It seems fairly obvious that if you are starting out an implementation (or even part way through), you would cease implementing Oracle Demand Planning (ODP) and implement Demantra. I have read that all development work was ceased on ODP (even though some new features have been implemented in ODP R12). Further, I have read that there is no simple migration path from ODP to Demantra (due to the very different data structures).
My questions:
1. Do you agree with my comment about ceasing the implementation of ODP and resuming with ODP, and if not, why not?
2. Is there any known migration path between the two products that is supported by Oracle or is a completely new implementation needed?
3. What are the comparative costs of the two products?
4. What are the technology stack requirements of the two products? (particulary of Demantra).
Thanks, as always.

with regards to point 1... demantra is a better tool; it will create better forecast numbers and will provide a much more sophisticated end user experience. however the answer to your question is not always an obvious one.
firstly lets talk about finance and schedule. ceasing an implementation that is costing a large sum of money in favour of a newer product may not be the right course of action. budget alarm bells will start ringing since the delivery schedule will now be off the chart and the costs will only go up. is the implementation required to fix legacy system and data problems? if so there will be groans from the people that need the forecast numbers when they hear that the current inaccuracy will continue because some fabled "even better numbers" will be available somewhat later than promised.
what about stability? odp has it's fair share of problems but it is still much more robust than oracle demantra and depending on factors such as company size, structure, product life-cycle, forecast horizon and methodology demantra may not even provide a better solution. an r12 implementation of odp would survive for a number of years before requiring an upgrade and by then newer and better versions of oracle demantra will be available. there are a lot of customers still using odp and oracle will continue to support them.
don't forget the bigger picture and plan for the future. planning and forecasting solutions need to be flexible - whatever solution you use you should expect that it will need to evolve and part of that evolution should be a product migration. if the planners that are expected to use the new tools and process are not yet skilled at forecasting (maybe they just manipulate numbers in excel based upon weekly meetings?) then the basic approach to skills development might be as follows: start simple, then develop a more sophisticated approach and finally create a sophisticated forecasting solution (this pathway could take years). if you don't yet know the medium or advanced strategy then how can you possibly know which tool is best suited? start simple with odp knowing that in two years when you will want to move to a more advanced forecasting approach your users will understand what they want. at that point you can decide whether to stick or twist.
as for the other questions: 2 is a no. 3 & 4: don't know (sorry)
good luck and let us know what you decide.

  • Can i access the Oracle Demand Planning Cubes using the AWM?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to access the Oracle Demand planning data which is stored as Express server using the Analytic workspace manager?
Any information regarding this is really appreciated.

    Abdul Hafeez,
Is ODP using Express Server or Oracle OLAP Analytical workspaces?
If Express Server is being used by ODP, then you cannot create sql views for OBIEE.
If Oracle database is being used for ODP data, then it is storing the data in Analytical workspaces. In that case, you can manually create OLAP views using OLAP_TABLE function. To do that, you will first have to know all the required structures inside the Analytical workspaces. Without that knowledge, you will not know what olap structures to "expose" in the OLAP views.
You can read about OLAP_TABLE function from Oracle 10g documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/olap.102/b14350/olap_table.htm
If you are using 9i database for ODP, then read about OLAP_TABLE function from 9i documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/olap.920/a95295/olap_tab.htm

    Hi user602232,
the batch logfile does not reveal any issues. It would be helpful to get more details:
    1. what kind of data does not appear in the worksheets? Level values etc?
    2. some more details about the demand plan setup and demand plan assignments would help.
The first things I would check:
    a) was data collection successful
    b) check the demand planner assignments

  • Demand Planning: How to create a forecast in ODP

Our client is using Oracle Financials OM etc however it currently uses a separate tool for forecasting. We are planning to start forecasting in Oracle Demand Planning.
Following is the simplified calculation for forecasting, how can this be done in ODP:
Calculation is done for item type, 2 calculations are done for every month (X and Y changes every month):
    JAN:
    1. A= X% of Jan sales
    2. B= Y% of last year sales
The forecast should pick greatest number among A and B (it should not pick A+B).
Is this possible in ODP, how to setup the forecast and its calculations.
    Thanks in advance.

You could do this in ODP using the absolute value function and some formula measures.
I assume you are familiar with formula measures in ODP and hence I will focus only on the math behind the formula measures. I am ignoring the percentage aspect that can be easily achieved using formula measure capabilities.
The result set that you want is the following:
    if X > Y return X else Y
    Formula measure 1 = FM1 = X + Y
    Formula measure 2 = FM2 = = |X - Y| (absolute value)
    Formula measure 3 = (FM1 + FM2) / 2
    How does this work?
    |X - Y|
    returns Y - X if Y > X
    returns X - Y if X > Y
if X > Y then the result is
    (X + Y + X - Y)/2 = X
if X < Y, then the result is
    (X + Y + Y - X)/2 = Y
This will give you the results you want.
Note: the formula measures apply at all levels of the hierarchy and is not the aggregation from the lowest levels.
Please be careful and validate this solution against your total set of requirements.

  • Demand Plan and Supply commit

The forecast or demand plan from Demantra (monthly bucket) is sent to suppliers by Collaboration planning Via ASCP (broken to weekly bucket). The supply commit will be received through CP (wkly bucket) to ASCP (wkly bucket) to Demantra (aggregated to monthly).
The reason being demantra values are in montly bucket and we want weekly break up and thats why we are thinking to use ASCP.
    Is this true?
View Plan vs. commit by month in Demantra
View Plan vs. commit by week in ASCP
CP is a portal for file exchange
Or supply commit is visible only in CP?
Please explain and suggest alternate design if possible?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You need to define the SNP Demand Profile and SNP Supply Profile in the Product Location master data.
Goto -> /n/SAPAPO/MAT1 -> On the selection screen below the Product / location fields, you see the fields for
    - Lot Size Profile
    - Demand Profile
    - SNP: Demand Profile
    - SNP: Supply Profile
    - Deplloyment Profile.
Here you can enter the name of any profile you want to create and use the 'Create' button to create your profile. This will be then available for selection when you create your Product Location master.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you still have any doubts.
    Cheers,
    Srinidhi
    Hope this helps.

  • Demand Planning:  creation of several Instances or Organizations

    Hello,
I have to setup and ODP environment for several entities. The data will come from legacy systems (not Oracle Applications) from each entity.
We will have as many plans as entities. I would like to know if it is better to create only One Instance, and each entity is defined as organization, or if it is better to create one Instance for each entity.
What are the pros and cons of each method ?
    Thanks in advance.

    ct,
It is usually about common data and workload.
If going the Instance per Entity route: each Instance will require a full collection of data (Products, Bill of Materials, Customers, Organisation etc.) to set up the structures that Demand Planning needs. There can be tremendous data management issues with having multiple instances.
If your multiple entities share common data then it would be easier to manage them as Organisations of one Instance. The maintenance and loading of data would be much easier. The new Demand Plan Scoping functionality will also enable easy Demand Plan creation per Org.
Making the assumption that your entities don't share common data I would advise doing some analysis to determine how easily they could be merged and what the maintenance effort would be. If the source data is merged then you may get benefit in reduced customisation of hierrachies and data streams.

    Simon.

  • Not able to Upload data in Demand Planning data view

    Hi
I am trying to upload a csv  file in to Demand planning interactive planning through " Upload Data " functionality
First I exported data from interactive planning , updated some data in file and again trying to upload same file.
    I am getting following error
    File cannot be uploaded
    Message no. /SAPAPO/SDP_UPLOAD009
    Diagnosis
File  has no technical information or incorrect technical information.
    Procedure
Save the file again locally. Make sure that the file has the technical information.
Could u please suggest what needs to be done
    Thanks and regards,
    Nitin Lavhe

    Hello,
For using the upload data functionality from interactive planning grid, you need to first download the data. While downloading the data, please check the check box for "Prepare the file for upload at later time", and then select the option of putting the technical setting into the file or into the system. Either way is okay. Then try uploading the same file.
    This should solve your problem.
    Thank you.

  • Oracle EPM Planning 11.1.2.1 - Ziplogs utility not working on all servers

Oracle EPM Planning 11.1.2.1 - Ziplogs utility not working on all servers
We have Planning 11.1.2.1 distributed so that Planning web app, EAS etc. are on own webservers and Essbase is on separate cluster.
Currently we have an issue with ziplogs utility - it seems to work on Essbase servers gathering all necessary ODL logs for over 100MBs, but on Planning Webservers ziplogs utility seems to start, but generates only empty 1kb zip file without any content.
We haven't touched logging otherwise, everything should be pretty much in original state.
Unfortunately I can't remember now exactly, but I have a a hunch that ziplogs utility worked prior patching Planning element on webservers to 11.1.2.1.600.
Other servers or elements haven't been patched (although Oracle recommends also FS, EB etc. to be patched to 11.1.2.1.600). I'm wondering, could this be the reason as in a way FS and EB are on same patching level whereas Planning is not?
Also, there seems to be a bit of limited diskspace on webservers (still waiting for extension), but I would imagine lack of diskspace for preparing any temp files etc. would results in some errors, the problem is that ziplogs doesn't give any errors, just runs very short time and then ends bringing 1kb empty file.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and are you perhaps able to give quick guidance how to enhance or modify ziplogs batch file etc. to make it create a bit of logging of its own actions?
Thanks in advance if anyone has ideas what could be the root cause for this or faced something similar.

Okay, I was able to get it installed and Common Components installed correctly this time. I still can't access workspace though.
Is there something I need to do before I can browse to http://localhost:19000/workspace/index.jsp?
All I get is the following error:
    Error 404--Not Found
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
    10.4.5 404 Not Found
The server has not found anything matching the Request-URI. No indication is given of whether the condition is temporary or permanent.
If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 403 (Forbidden) can be used instead. The 410 (Gone) status code SHOULD be used if the server knows, through some internally configurable mechanism, that an old resource is permanently unavailable and has no forwarding address.
    Anyone know what's going on?

  • Business Process: Final Demand Plan Key Figure in the past for APO DP

    Hello APO process experts,
I have a BPX question for APO DP process owners, consultants or gurus:
1.- Have you ever seen in any SAP APO customer, that in their APO DP planning books, they chose or designed to update the Final Demand Plan key Figure in the past closed historical buckets with the Actual Sales?
Meaning that that in the Past closed historical Buckets, Actual Sales and Final Demand Plan, look exactily the same.
Meaning that they create a dynamic Final Demand Plan key figure so to speak, yet they did not choose to create a key figure that also keeps the Final Demand Plan as originally entered.
2.- Would you think that doing the above, without keeping any keyfigure in the planning book that actually shows what the Final Demand Plan was in the Past, is a good practice?
The Demand Planner could still retreive the Final Demand Plan from BI reports, yet, dynamically they could never really see it in the planning book.
3.- Do you think the above dynamic key figure would bias the Demand Planner's behaviour to manipulate the future open Final Demand Plan buckets to enter volumes in order sum to a monthly total, independently of what were the over and underachievements in the past (since they are not really visible to him) ?
I would really like your feedback,
    thanks in advance!
    JD Loera

    Hello Thanks for your feedback.
I agree with your point, and I hope that i still get more feedback from other Business Process Experts.
I am trying to build a case for my client, to challenge the decision of their initial design as this practice is going to hurt the Demand Management process, if what they intend to achieve is a true "unconstrained demand plan"
    Much appreciated

  • Oracle.jbo.NoDefException: JBO-25002: Definition oracle.epm.planning.applic

    All,
Want some pointers to the error that I am running into. The application supports webcenter and when we bring up the web page we get the error below
oracle.jbo.NoDefException: JBO-25002: Definition oracle.epm.planning.application.ui.DataControls of type null is not found
caused by the nested error Caused by: oracle.mds.core.MetadataNotFoundException: MDS-00013: no metadata found for metadata object "/oracle/epm/planning/application/ui/DataControls.dcx"
    at oracle.mds.core.MetadataObject.getBaseMO(MetadataObject.java:1279)
There is no file called DataControls.dcx under the "/oracle/epm/planning/application/ui/ package.
How do we remove the runtime reference that webcenter still seems to hold onto?
    Any help is really appreciated.

It supports WebCenter Customizable Components tag library in the ViewController project. The DataControls.dcx file which was under the oracle.epm.planning.application.ui package was still present under the classes folder. Since this file was deleted from the JDEV view it seemed that it should not be included. It worked on my environment but not for others who did not have the file stored under classes folder under the ViewController project.
I have the problem resolved now. Thanks for all the pointers.
