Oracle in RHEL 5. Which one to learn first? Linux or Oracle?

My office uses Oracle Database in RHEL 5. Which one should I master first to be a qualified DBA? the Linux or Oracle? If the answer's Linux, where can I find Linux Tutorial for Dummies since I've never handled Linux in my life before. thanks

Both.
Best way to start is install a VM on your computer and download a Live distribution (Ubuntu, Fedora Core, etc...), install it. While you are playing around with linux in your VM, install oracle on your windows system and start playing around there. The only real difference you will encounter when playing around with the basics of oracle is the path reference to files. It may seem hard to get started but once have gotten to the point where you know enough to install oracle under linux (install apps via YUM or RPM, change configuration, install other daemons or services; IE: postfix, samba, smtp, etc) and know about creating users, creating tablespaces, creating tables/procedures/packages, altering system parameters, creating database links, etc...you will be on your way.
However becoming a DBA is not as simple as just knowing about Linux and Oracle. Since you have not indicated what you do know about this area I will assume a few things. First off when you start working as a DBA, you may not be just running Oracle on Linux, you may be running oracle on HP-UX, AIX, Linux, Solaris, Windows. Plus you will also be expected to know about writing quieries and optimizing queries. There is no magic settings that make databases run fast, you have to know about how they work, how queires are executed by the sql parser (this is where the real performance gains are).
One thing that I have been constantly expected to know (with detail) is oracle licensing. This is a nightmare, and it takes a while to learn about how all the licensing works so you can give advise for new projects that want to use certain technologies from oracle. This is very daunting at first, but as you learn about everything and become more comfortable about using and knowing all of this stuff it will become second nature to you. If you know DBA's (work colleagues or friends) talk to them, get them to show you, you will learn a lot more in less time than learning by yourself.

  • How the process starts in XI and which one should start first ?

    How the process starts in XI and which one should start first ?

    XI flow :
    1.File picked by the adapter,at the A.E it converts to XML format.
    2.Generate a msg ID for the file and creates XI header to that file  using CPA cache. CPA cache will be having the    information about all the Control(address) data.
    3.Module processor
    4.The file goes to send queue by the adapter engine, that file will be  picked by the internal XI adapter and the file    will be forwarded to the Integration engine.
    5.Pipeline steps follow the Integration Engine.
      Receiver determination, Interface determination, Msg split, Msg  mapping, Logical routing, Receiver aggrement, call adapter
    6.The file will go to receive queue, which was taken and forwarded to the adapter engine.

  • Node manager or the Admin server - which one to start first?

    Hi Experts,
    Somewhere i see its this way.
    OBIEE 11.1.1.6 | OBIEE
    To start the Oracle Business Intelligence system, you start:
    the Node Manager(It is by default windows service in Enterprise Installation of OBIEE 11G)
    the Administration Server (It is weblogic Admin Server)
    the Managed Servers(Comes with Enterprise Installation of OBIEE 11G)
    and then you start the system components.(All OBIEE Components : BI Server,Presentation Server,Schedular,Java Host,Cluster Services.
    and at other places i see this...
    OBIEE 11G - Starting Oracle Business Intelligence | GerardNico.com (BI, OBIEE, OWB, DataWarehouse)
    To start the Oracle Business Intelligence system, you start:
    the Administration Server
    the Node Manager
    the Managed Servers,
    and then you start the system components.
    I have Linux environment and it has just single BI Server and i go like this.
    1) startWeblogic.sh script
    2) startNodeManager.sh
    3) startManagedWeblogic.sh
    4) then system components.
    Thanks
    Ashish

    so the way i am starting OBIEE Services currently is basically wrong ie..
    1) startWeblogic.sh script
    2) startNodeManager.sh
    3) startManagedWeblogic.sh
    4) then system components.
    ( by the way everything  comes up perfect even if i start the nodemanager after the startWeblogic.sh script)
    and i should do it this way..
    1)startNodeManager.sh
    2)startWeblogic.sh script
    3)startManagedWeblogic.sh
    4) then system components.
    Kindly confirm...

  • HKCU registry and the start up application which one will ready first

    Hello guys, here is my question. When create a new user in windows8.1, and I write a service to launch my appA to do something.
    and my appA will read the registry at HKCU, but failed! Then I restart appA, read the registry again, it success!  I guess when the new user was created the appA was launched before the HKCU ready. Is it true?

    Hi Henry,
    It might be a permission issue. Windows services execute under different account which compare with desktop app. They are the following.
    LocalSystem,
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms684190(v=vs.85).aspx
    NetworkService,
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms684272(v=vs.85).aspx
    LocalSerivce,
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms684188(v=vs.85).aspx
    Please add log handler in appA to see the failure in details.

  • Which one is run first, Constructors or Initializers?

    When creating an object, do Constructors execute before Initializers? Or is it random (lol)?

    If I got it right, then the Initializers for my object execute before the constructors, but I'm not sure.
    This means that the following example would throw a null pointer exception, because the initializer would run before the constructor, right?
    class Test {
         Thread t = null;
         Test ( ) {
              t = new Thread ( );
              t.start( );
    Edit: I don't have Java with me right now, I'm just editing code on Notepad++.
    I can't install it at the moment, that's why I asked.
    Edit 2: Still unanswered. Could anyone at least run that for me, please?

  • Which is better to learn first, Dreamweaver or Flash?

    I just got the CS5 Web Premium.  I have to learn several of the programs.  Which should I learn first, Dreamweaver or Flash?  Thought I'd ask this forum because I want to start out well.
    Thanks for any advice you can offer.

    They aren't closely related, so flip a coin.   Learning both at the same time couldn't hurt either.
    As far as Dreamweaver goes, that is primarily a tool, one that is more useful to people who have a good understanding of the languages that are involved with web design, and is not really for learning how to do web design if that is your intention.  Learning web design requires learning html, css, javascript, php, etc...   and learning those really only requires a simple text editor and the drive to pursue them.

  • Which one should I learn first?

    I am becoming an common Oracle DBA and I want to learn RedHat Linux. But I do not know the difference between Redhat Linux 9 and Redhat Enterprise Linux 5. What are they for? Which one should I learn first?

    But I do not know the difference between Redhat Linux 9 and Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.RedHat Linux 9 is very oldest brother of RHEL5. While RH9 is public (free of charge) distribution, RHEL5 is commercial no free (of charge) distribution. Redhat 9 was last public (free) release from Redhat corporation, since next release it was called Fedora. Name "Redhat" is used only for Commercial enterpise distribution.
    There is not difference between using/mantaining of them. But the main difference is that Redhat 9 has pretty old version of kernel, and other packages and is not supported by Oracle.
    What are they for?If we are speaking about Linux then we are speaking about Unix like operating system. So your question is just like "What is Windows for?".
    Which one should I learn first?As I said before, there is not difference between using/mantaining of them. But as Redhat 9 is pretty old distribution then use RHEL5. There is also existing distribution Centos which is clone of RHEL. When you install Centos 5 in fact you are using RHEL but with changed logos and texts (brands). But unfortunatelly this clone is not officialy supported by Oracle so it can't be use for production Oracle installations. For more informations and download look here: http://www.centos.org
    There is also another RHEL clone shipped by Oracle (and is supported by Oracle of course). You can download it from http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux

    I think 6.2 is easier, just follow read me instruction, on redhat 7.0 you must run patch to downgrade glibc from 2.2 to 2.1
    null

  • With multiple Oracle Clients how do you know which one ADO is using

    Currently using Oracle client 8.1.7 to connect to a 10g database with the following connection string.
    Driver={Microsoft ODBC for Oracle}; CONNECTSTRING=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=127.0.0.1)(PORT=10001))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=Falcon2))); uid=Falcon;pwd=*******;"
    If I add a second, newer client, how do I tell ADO to use the newer client?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Oracle Linux vs. redhat 5.2 - Which one do I go with????

    Which one should it be? Can anyone shed some light on this decision?
    Your thoughts...
    -Rob

    The light in which I see this is much like segio's:
    RHEL & OEL are build from the same source, and will be copies of each other (remember the goal of OEL is to remain in binary and source compatible with RHEL)
    I want to add another version of RHEL, CentOS to this discussion.
    If you want enterprise grade support, RHEL and OEL are clearly the choices. The real choice between RHEL and OEL is where you want your support to come from. There's no such thing as better in this area.
    If you want to be able to update your linux install without a paid support contract, take a look at centos. It is very convenient to have a RHEL compatible linux version, with yum working out of the box, and have updates and the ability to install other packages from repositories on the internet.
