Oracle Parameter _FIX_CONTROL: EWA vs SAP Note Recommendation?
We have Oracle 11.2.0.2 on RedHat Linux
cat /$ORACLE_HOME/sapbundle/version.txt
SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.2.3 - 201108
For FIXCONTROL '6055658:OFF' what recommendation should I take the SAP Note or EWA?
1) SAP NOTE
In the SAP Note 1431798 "Oracle 11_2_0 Database Parameter Settings" ...
May 12, 2011:
added FIXCONTROL '6055658:OFF' for UNIX
FIXCONTROL
'6055658:OFF' UNIX SBP 11201x_date ( date >= 201105 )
So the SAP Note looks like FIXCONTROL should contain '6055658:OFF'
2) EWA
Settings defined but not recommended
6055658:OFF
Thanks in advance.
Hello Bill,
You should always check and go with the recommendation from the parameter note.
10g - 830576
11g -1431798
For the fixcontrol parameters, these were introduced to allow enabling and disabling of optimizer fixes . The corresponding patch therefore needs to be installed to enable you to you set the required parameter. With EWA, this report usually flags any parameter which may require further checking, (ie because a note exists that details behaviour of setting this parameter for example a performance behaviour in OLTP versus OLAP). EWA is doing this to ensure that the DBA is aware that there is some additional step, info regarding the parameter. The Colleagues above have already mentioned to run the parameter script which checks it's result against the Oracle version parameter note and flags any incorrect setting and also provides the setting that is recommended. Before you do this you should check the relevant parameter note for these recommendations.
Hope this helps
Best Regards
Rachel

SAP Bundle Patches and Automatic Oracle parameter check script (note117165)
After reading SAP note 1027012 on SAP Bundle Patches and SAP note 1171650 on the
automatic Oracle parameter check script I have a simple question:
Is it still necessary to manually check whether some patch is installed in order to determine
exactly which event and fixcontrol to set?
Or is the automatic Oracle parameter check script so sophisticated that it is fully
sufficient to implement its recommendations, and you don't neet to manually
check any more which SBP with which bugfixes has been installed?
It would be great if SAP could confirm that the automatic parameter check is sufficient,
but so far I haven't seen this statement explicitly. I believe this is mostly because it
is so difficult (impossible?) to determine via SQL which patches have been applied.

Yes and No.
until now, fixcontrol are dependent of CBO patches and those are "register" on the view v$system_fix_control. They can be "check" autmatically, so you get the "proper" recommendation for those.
the parameter event depends on different situations, like some patches. But those patches are "normal" patches and it is not possible to check if they are installed from inside the DB with a simple script. For those, the check script will tell you to do it manually and will tell you which patch has to be check
In addition, there are other parameters that have to be check "manually", like processes (where you get a "semiautomatic" check) or db_cache_size, where you should check if the size

The automatic parameter check is sufficient, meaning that you get all information, including the parameters that you have to check manually and some information for that check. Currently, it is not possible to automatize it 100% -
Physical Memory Upgrade [SAP, Oracle parameter changes]
Hello Guru,
Good day!
I'm not sure if I'm in the correct forum, please bare with me if I'm not.
We are actually planning to increase our Production [Physical Memory] server from its current size 15360GB including [oracle, SAP & OS] to 44GB memory. Do you have any idea how can we calculate to the most needed SAP / DB parameter should be increase after we allocate the 44GB in preparation for Go-Live. Below are details of my systems [oracle version, kernel, R/3 System, OS version, SAP parameter and DB parameter.
Reason for memory upgrade: will create two client in one system with a different number of users and different plant e.g. America / Canada

MikeI feel the best way to get the parameters which needs to be adjusted is to go for EarlyWatch Check after increasing the Physical Memory of your SAP system, as we cannot say how and which parameters needs to be checked and changed.. as there is some dependiblity also between the parameters...

SAP Note 378648 - Offline backup support with Oracle Fail Save
I am trying to implement SAP Note 378648 - Offline backup support with Oracle Fail Save, but am unsure about part of the solution....
Basically, I have to add several parameters into the Environment Variables of the MS Clustered Servers running Windows Server 2003 for the user xidadm...
Fairly straight forward apart from one parameter....
BR_OFS_DOMAIN=<domain>
I am unsure what is required/meant by domain. Can anyone shed some light??Those are environment variables of the Windows user who is running brbackup; usually this is SAPService<SID>.
You have to set this variables the same way as you set ORACLE_HOME and so on.
(I am not sure about the details; never worked with MS cluster.)
hope this helps -
EWA report did not go to SAP!!
Hi Exprts,
my EWA report did not go to SAP this time.. It has been going before.. is there any reason? Can someone please help?
Thanks,
I will post points for sure!!Hi Afi,
the EWA report is scheduled every week in the SAP Solution Manager system for the satellite system.
As described above it's forward to SAP after first execution
- every 4 weeks
- in case of a red rating of the overall session.
Sessions forwarded to SAP are indicated by a small "SAP" icon right at the session link (tx DSMOP, Operations: Solution Monitoring -> EarlyWatch Alert).
Do you refer
- to EWAs scheduled via SolMan or
- to EWA scheduled as a session directly in SDCCN (session number contains a Z)
These session data (also know as download data) is sent to SAP and you are able
to access the generated MS Word (XML) report in SAP Support Portal.
I am not aware of other functionalities (and I am quite familar with this topic).
Sessions with GREEN, YELLOW are not sent in SAP Solution Manager to SAP every week. I have never seen this and it was not developed.
Could you explain in more detail
- how did identy forwarded sessions in the past
- what's wrong now, how do you see this.
- What's your current Support Package level
Best regards,

Oracle on Xen: Ambigous information - Metalink vs. SAP notes
Note 1173954 - Support of Oracle for VMWare and XEN states:
<...>
Oracle is not certifying any of its products on XEN and VMWare virtualized environments.
<...>
but Metalink 563608.1 states
<...>
As the Xen kernel is shipped by the Operating System Vendor, and it is not tainted, it is fine for Oracle, and it is certified to be used.
<...>
Can anyone please elaborate what is correct?
MarkusHi Markus,
the SAP note has been written by the Oracle development support at SAP. These are Oracle guys.
So for SAP customers this is the current state of affairs.
Anyhow, Metalink 563608.1 is about Oracle 11g which is not even released for SAP yet. Also it has not been reviewed yet - so it may be subject to change.
More information are also available in Metalink 249212.1 (VMWare usage).
Anyhow, since SAP is moving strongly towards supporting virtual environments now for quite some time, I would assume, that XEN Support will be given also for Oracle platforms sooner or later.
But for now: better don't use it for production systems.
Best regards,

Oracle Time Zone - SAP Note 1019133
Has anyone applied this patch or skipped the patch?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
In 2007 the USAs daylight savings starts earlier and ends later, so Oracles table of time zone rules should be changed for America.
The SAP note 1019133 said we probably do not need a patch.
The Oracle Note 396671.1 said, apply it just in case.
SAP Note: 1019133
" In the standard SAP application the JVM and the mentioned datatypes (TSLTZ / TSTZ) are not used. Therefore it's not necessary to apply this patches."
Oracle Doc: 396671.1
"If there is no other use of time zone data than stored TSTZ data, and the utltzuv2.sql script shows that none of these use the affected time zones, then you could choose to not apply the new time zone files (even though in such a situation the application would also be very easy, so the advise would still be to do it "just in case")."since the oracle notes had said it is the same patch for the DB and client, i just thought : in an SAP environment, how does a client connect.....
well, our SAP users use the SAP Login GUI thingy.... which gets them to the SAP instance of their choice, ..... and it's the SAP instance that is then actually the "client" for the oracle DB.....
so.... well, the SIDadm account must be indicative of how this client process works for SAP because SIDadm can start and stop the Oracle DB....
so i logged in as SIDadm and looked for the client that way.... i.e.... go to the $ORACLE_HOME/oracore/zoneinfo directory that SIDadm sees and what's there....
in my case it put me in same dir as the DB files.... so must be getting it from same spot.
cuz this was something i just made up as i went along and i was very tired at the time, i also ran a find command from the root directory..... i am on Sun.... my find command was :
find . -name timezone.dat -print
granted there were a lot of directories i did not have perms to see, but it returned only 2 timezone files for me....
the one in the $ORACLE_HOME/oracore/zoneinfo directory
and one in /local..... (which is what we have for some secondary things, not SAP related)....
so try a big system level find command if on Sun, or something similar on your O/S..... if you have your SAP and your DB on the same server.... it's got to be on that server somewhere....
hope that helps. -
Is RAID 5 not recommended for Oracle database ?
- I am planning to install Oracle database
Here are the specs:
- Dell PowerEdge T610 server
- Windows 2008 R2 (64-bit )
- 24 GB memory
- Oracle 10g database (64-bit database)
- Our database is for an ERP based client server application
- Will have around 35-45 users
- Will have around 150-200 transaction per day ( 8AM-5PM) only database
- database would be around 10-15GB (data files)
Now I am planning to buy the hardware server, I heard that RAID 5 is not recommended for Oracle database.
Is it true ?
What do you recommended for Oracle database ? RAID 5 (or) RAID 1johnpau2013 wrote:
I heard that RAID 5 is not recommended for Oracle database.
Is it true ?Kind off... as Oracle (as per the RAC Starter Kits for example) explicitly recommends SAME - as in Stripe And Mirror Everything.
This is a combination of RAID1 and RAID0.
However, you will also get whitepapers from storage vendors like EMC in partnership with Oracle, that explains how to configure and use RAID5 storage and how effective this is. And as some will tell you, RAID5 can work just fine with Oracle... and some others will grimace and tell you how bad an idea that is from personal experiences.
In a nutshell - RAID5 requires a parity calculation on each write. That is a very expensive overhead if that calculation impacts the fwrite() (file write) command of a process writing data to disk. It significantly slows down the write operation.
However, if that parity calculation is done asynchronously and does not effect the elapsed time for a fwrite(), then a fwrite() to RAID5 is as fast or as slow as it would be to RAID10 for example.
Unsure how many modern storage system supports off-loading the parity calculation and not impacting the write I/O call. This can be done using ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits), specialised s/w on the storage server, etc.
Whatever you put in place - test the RAID config thoroughly up front and ensure that performance is up to specs. There's a utility called fio (<i>Flexible I./O</i>) written by a Linux kernel hacker that works for Oracle. It is an excellent utility to use to generate and test I/O - but it is Linux and Unix based.
Any specific reason using Windows? Linux is by far a more predominant 64bit operating system than Windows, and has significant higher market share in Oracle RDBMS than Windows. Given the fact that over 93% of the 500 fastest computer systems on this planet runs Linux, I'm always kind of amazed that some would still use Windows as a server-side o/s for Oracle. -
SAP Note 23345 for Oracle Consistency Check
Dear All,
I would like to run a Consistency check using backup type = online option via DB VERIFY but unfortunately each time I run the backup online using the below commands I am getting permission error.I have run the commands below using ORA<SIDADM>
brbackup -u / -m all -w only_rmv -e <parallel degree> -c
brbackup -u / -m all only_dbv -c -t online -e 3
brbackup -u / -m all -w only_dbv -e 3 -c
brbackup -u / -c force -w only_dbv -t online -p init<sidadm>.sap -m ALL -e 3
brbackup -u / -c force -w only_dbv -p init<sidadm>.sap -m ALL
I hope someone could provide what is the best command to use in order to execute the Consistency check in Online mode as I am planning to schedule it on weekly basis with the Online option..
Thank you.

Need info about the parameter _FIX_CONTROL in a BW environment
Hi ,
I have done some research about the parameter FIXCONTROL and went through the SAP note 1165319.
We have a task at hand where SAP has recommended a new value to be added to this parameter in a BW production environment.
Now in the above note there are an entire set of values which this parameter can take up.
I have understood to some extent that this has to do with this Fixes if case of any issues.
last month we have upgraded the oracle version of the database from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.4.
Can anyone help me in understanding what this MergeFix is all about?
I need to better understand this concept.
Thank you.
Regards,
Hari Kishan.Hello,
still not sure if I fully understood your question; but the recommended approach regarding patches is:
1) Apply all the interim patches recommended by SAP. For Oracle 10.2.0.4 these will those from SAP note 1137346. The merge fix from SAP note also 1165319 is mentioneded there.
And by the way, SAP note 1137346 is updated about once a month; new patches may be added, old ones may be removed. SAP recommends to follow accordingly; but if there aren't any problems, you might want to you keep your current state for a longer period.
2) Read all the SAP notes mentioned there. You may have to do additional tasks like setting Oracle parameters, FIXCONTROL or others. The value you have to set now may or may not be mentioned in one of these notes, I can't know.
3) If you encounter some problem, first search in SAP notes, or if necessary open a support call with SAP. You may then have to apply additional patches and set addtional values for FIXCONTROL.
And yes, this way the list of required patches may become specific to each customer, as customer requirements are specific.
But it would be difficult to find the exact list of needed patches in advance.
I think a BW consultant who is familiar with Oracle installations will tell you something similar. One who is very experienced in your scenario might also be able to recommend additional patches in advance.

Archiving: experience with Oracle's Archive Adapter for SAP
All,
Does anyone have experience to share about Oracle's "Content Database Archive Adapter for SAP Applications"?
Thanks
GuentherSasi,
There is a new MySAP adapter with 10.13.1 and above to support ECC 6.0. Please see the following section in the 10.1.3.1 adapter release notes:
12.4.1 MySAP ERP Versions and APIs
The following MySAP ERP platforms are supported by OracleAS Adapter for MySAP
ERP:
■ SAP R/3 Enterprise 47x100
■ SAP R/3 Enterprise 47x200
■ MySAP ERP Central Component (ECC) 5.0, deployed on SAP NetWeaver 2004
■ MySAP ERP Central Component (ECC) 6.0, deployed on SAP NetWeaver 2004s
■ SAP Java Connector (SAP JCo) Version 2.18.
For the current release status of the SAP Java Connector, refer to SAP Note #549268
in the SAP Service Marketplace.
Release versions may vary by product component. In addition, SAP functions may
vary by SAP product version and support package.
Note: The OracleAS Adapter for MySAP ERP supports only the versions listed above.
It is not recommended to use the OracleAS Adapter for MySAP ERP with older
versions of SAP R/3. If you plan to use the adapter with older versions of SAP R/3 for
example SAP R/3 4.6C, prior approval from iWay Software Product Management is
required. -
Unsupported version of oracle database in ewa
hi sap experts,
When going through my ewa report, i'm getting the following issue, which is showing
"Unsupported Oracle Release"
I also notice that on the database part, the current version of Oracle is missing? We have Oracle version 10.
please help me!Hello Jessica,
I've seen this issue many times and the way it will definately get resolved is by doing a full service definition refresh. Please follow SAP Note 727998 to do this completely. Please complete this first on your Solution Manager system and once completed, do the same on the Satellite system.
Please note that there are 3 steps in the service definition refresh & they are:
- Delete the Service Definition
- Refresh the Service Definition
- Regenerate the Service Definition
Note 727998 will outline all the steps required to have this happen.
Once you have completed this, please re-generate the EWA report in question to ensure that the problem is resolved.
Hope this helps you out!
Thanks,

RSECNOTE - too many Notes recommended !!
Hi friends,
based on EWA recommendation & alerts, i executed RSECNOTE in my system and it is reporting missing SAP Notes.
But now problem is .. too many !! more than 100. Is it required to implement everything ?
Should we implement all 100 SAP notes listed or any filter on them ?
ANy way i can implement multiple notes in one go ?
thanks
ashish
Edited by: ashish vikas on Jul 19, 2011 1:13 PMI am worried about disturbing production by 100 note implementation at one go
You won't, you'll implement in DEV and create a transport... then transport to QA for testing and finally deliver to produccion
.. and its a big manual effort to check every note in marketplace before implementing.
It is a small project yes... we all have to go through that :-D
Should i go for everything what SNOTE say can be implemented without reading them for side-effects/prerequisite..
Not recommendable, always read the documentation... it may take you a few hours and you will find that some of the Notes may need manual code update so you will want to include your ABAPer into the equation too..
