Oracle reports not supporting WCHAR and WVARCHAR

I have been using Oracle Reports Builder 10g (Report Builder 9.0.4.0.33) to test against an ODBC backend database via the provided jdbc-odbc bridge, this has been working well but recently the server backend changed to be UTF-8 compatible and as a result now returns the WCHAR and WVARCHAR types (ODBC types -8 and -9). These cause an error in the Report Designer
REP-0069 Internal Error
JDBCPDS-62013: The column type WCHAR used in the query/procedure is not supported by Reports JDBC Query.
I have my NLS_LANG and DEVELOPER_NLS_LANG set to ENGLISH_UNITED KINGDOM.UTF8.
Is there any way to enable the support for WCHAR/WVARCHAR in the Reports Builder?
Regards,
Adam.

Is this a problem with one type of report? Does a simple test report created in the builder work ok?
How are you running the report? From a URL or from Forms?
Is there any error showing in the ?/reports/logs or in the ?/opmn/logs (either in the report server log or in the OC4J)?
Can you run the report using rwrun?

    Hello All
It's been a year after those posts about the limit of identifiers in Oracle Database. Does anybody know what can be done to get rid of that primitive limit? We are developing using Application Servers, Java, generated Code and a very nice object model, in which we can't just use abreviations because of early database age memory shortcomings.
We are currently using 8i in a very large organization. Is there any chance this version can be configured to allow larger identifiers? Is upgrading to 9i going to solve this problem? Is Oracle Databases really doomed forever because of a 20-year-ago limitation?
Please, I do like Oracle Databases. I don't want to be flooded with quick answers like "just use 32 character identifiers". I would like to hear a serious solution. Is anybody there still locked in the 8.3 filename paradigm of MS/PC-DOS? Does anybody has to fit an entire Enterprise System in segmented 640Kb of memory? Does anybody has to use monochrome character mode interfaces? Of course not those in the mainstream.
I also know that other hadrware and software products have lots os limitations. Take Windows 2000. Its command line has a limit of 255 characters! You can't have more than 4GB of memory in a PC! However, one can't expect one mistake to justify others.
I wish I were very wrong in this respect, and all it should be necessary is to turn on some kind of configuration parameter in 8i to allow us to develop high quality code.
    Thanks for your attention.
Please, feel free to contact me if you have a solution.

  • Why Oracle 11gR2 not supported on Virtual machine

    Dear All,
I have googled this topic and have found various view from different people.
I just need to know solid reason for why Oracle do not support VMWARE. I am not talking about Oracles VM Virtual Box but the others.
    Will highly appreciate your suggestions.
    Regards,
    Imran

    Hi Imran,
The Oracle support policy states that “Oracle will only provide support for issues that either are known to occur on the native OS, or can be demonstrated not to be as a result of running on VMware.” This statement may
create a perception that customers are somehow at risk, but the growing number of customers virtualizing Oracle on VMware have chosen to do so after carefully weighing the benefits against this implied risk.
VMWare believe that three considerations are especially relevant to this assessment:
    • You can evaluate the risk by considering the following facts:
––VMware does not modify the native OS, so the solution Oracle provides for the native OS is fully expected to work for that same OS running on VMware.
––VMware has received no reports of incidents in which vSphere was determined to have caused a technical issue in the Oracle application or database.
––At worst, Oracle might ask a customer to reproduce the issue on a physical server, particularly if Oracle’s solution does not work. This request is seldom made, and even in the physical world Oracle reserves the
right to request reproduction on different physical hardware in this situation.
    • You can negotiate the terms in your support agreement with Oracle and insist that Oracle provide you with the support commitment that meets your needs, including support for Oracle products running on vSphere.
Some industry analysts have stated that it is commercially unacceptable to have policies that are difficult for Oracle customers to locate on Oracle’s Web site and that are changeable without notice.
    • VMware has its own policy to support customers running Oracle applications on VMware, available at https://www.vmware.com/support/policies/oracle-support.html. If required, VMware will take ownership of
the support request and pursue rapid resolution, in collaboration with the Oracle support organization through TSANet as needed. Because VMware customers virtualize all types of Tier 1 applications, we have
significant expertise in making this a seamless support experience.
We are running many mission critical systems in VMware products.
Provide your email id, I can send you the good white paper on Understanding Oracle Certification, Support and Licensing for VMware Environments

  • Difference between deploying oracle report in RDF format and REP format

    Hi All,
    Good Day!!!
We are frequently encountering report failures in our production environment with the error message "REP-1247: There exist uncompiled program unit(s)"
But the report executes successfully in the next try and the issue is intermittant. In production the reports are deployed in RDF format.
So in our test environment we tried of deploying the reports in REP foramat and we cant find any errors.
Is there Difference in deploying oracle report in RDF format and REP format?
Is there any diffence in execution?
Your inputs will be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks in Advance,
    JK

    Hi,
REP is to RDF what FMX is to FMB, MMX is to MMB, etc.
Only difference here is that if you deploy RDF, not REP, then the RDF is compiled at runtime by Reports Engine and then executed. In other words, if REP is deployed then it is straightway execute.
That should explain all your observations.
    Cheers.
PS: Please post Oracle Report queries on {forum:id=84} forum.

  • Oracle Reports 6i Delimied Format and Carriage Returns

    Hi
I'm using Oracle Reports 6i to generate a report to a text file using delimited format so I can read it in Excel. I've done some testing putting some information in the layout but it seems that all my data is generated in one line. It does not generate the carriage return for the multiple rows I need. Is this standard functionality?. If so, that means I have to generate the file using PL/SQL to get the control I want?

Whew...lot's of questions...let's see if I can help (at least a little)...
    1. Quite possibly, the user is/was pulling the image from the database? I do this in my environment, so it might be worth a look.
    2. You should be able to print in any format from the web. You may need to adjust your destype/desname/desname parameters.
    3. Only thing I can think of here is that maybe the original report was not written using a standard web-friendly font?
    4. There's a couple of ways you can get data into an excel file:
    A. Use DDE and poke the data right into it (messy when you need to print the regular Oracle report too).
    B. Add an option to print to file and set the desformat to DELIMITEDDATA. Be sure to go through the data model and set Exclude from XML Output to 'Yes' for fields you don't need. Also, be aware that this may not come out in the same order as they do on the printed report. You can read about this on Metalink.
Hopefully that helps you a little bit. :)

  • Oracle Report vs JSP efficiency and Excel XML in Web Source Questions

I have used Oracle Reports in the past 6i, but haven't used them in about 4 years. We are now using 9.0.4 reports and I am trying to generate Excel XML from an Oracle report by manipulating the web source of the report. Basically copying and pasting the Excel XML into the web source of the Oracle Report instead of html as suggested by this Metalink Doc ID 240819.1. I do have a JSP working example that generates Excel XML created in JDeveloper and successfully spawns off a very nice looking Excel spreadsheet.
However, a statement was made here by our app sever guy that an Oracle Report is more efficient at getting data from the database than a JSP. The app sever section does not want anyone using JSPs to generate a report of any kind. I guess small web pages are OK since our java guys use them all the time. This rule for a Reports only environment seems a little restrictive to me. Is there any truth to the statement that Oracle Reports bulk collects data in one chunk as opposed to a JSP making multiple trips to the database from the middle tier?
Secondly, if an Oracle Report is more efficient in the way that it collects large record sets from the db, and if I save an Oracle Report as a JSP not an rdf, and use the reports_tld.jar with the rw tags instead of the typical jsp jstl tags, will I still get the same improvement from using an Oracle report? I guess the improvement is in the library used correct?
Thirdly, although not part of this forum, I also am assuming that if we have single sign on that when I call a JSP from an Oracle Form I will not have to log in again correct?
    Thanks...

It could be the configuration issue. Reconfigure the engine.

  • Oracle product not supported on Vmware virtual environment

    Members,
Oracle certification says Oracle products running on Vmware virtual environment are not supported.
One of my development Identity manager setup is running on Vmware virtual environment.
As of now application is running fine and I am getting support from Oracle on product issues.
Can anyone suggest what could be the impact of this in future and what types of issues I can expect in future.
    Thanks,
    S M

Could you verify this behaviour outside a VMware virtual machine?
If yes, then please open an SR on Metalink to let support diagnose.
Provide an RDA, AWR snapshot if you have licensed the Diagnistic Pack - if not than provide STATSPACK snapshots.
Sorry - but this is a database upgrade forum :-)

  • Included Mini-DVI to DVI adapter does not support HDCP and iTunes HD movies

    Hi.
Just downloaded Twilight in HD (to own) from the iTunes Store and had the annoying message about HDCP not being supported by my display, and that I could not play the movie in HD.
My Mac Mini is plugged to a very HDCP-compliant Sony Bravia 40" LCD TV via Apple's mini-DVI to DVI adapter (included in the new Mac Mini's box) and a DVI to HDMI cable.
(HDCP works well for this TV with a PS3, another Sony Blu-Ray player (the 2 are for zones A and B), an AppleTV)
Since I have other recent Macs with a Mini DisplayPort, I happen to also have an Apple branded Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
So I replaced the (mini-DVI to DVI) adapter by the (Mini DisplayPort to DVI) adapter and plugged it on the Mini DisplayPort on the Mac Mini.
I can now play the HD version on my Sony TV!!
This really sounds like a joke!
A joke that is going to make me go the shop and buy another (Mini DisplayPort to DVI) adapter, since I like to always have one, as well as the VGA adapter, with my MacBooks.
Let's hope there will sonn be an iTunes, Leopard, or mini-DVI to DVI adapter firmware update very soon to fix this.

I am actually very surprised that your miniDisplayPort to DVI transition works with HD content.
I'd consider that a bonus and cherish it until Apple removes that functionality in a future update.
It is probably a bug as it should not work.
The thing to keep in mind is that DVI cables do not support the necessary DRM/encryption signals for HD video content.
This is one of the main reason DisplayPort was introduced.
So I am not surprised that miniDVI to DVI to HDCP does not play HD content on your TV.
In fact this is +expected behavior+ due to the lack of DRM/encryption signals.
No matter how you convert from miniDVI to DVI, the port cannot create something that it doesn't have in the first place.
The more I am surprised that the miniDisplayPort to DVI to HDCP transition provides these signals. I would have expected them to be filtered out in the DVI cable in the middle as this cable cannot pass something on that DVI is not designed to carry (HD DRM/encryption signals).
It could very well be a 'bug' in the miniDisplayPort to DVI cable controller, which Apple might 'fix' in a future driver update.
It is likely a mistake that this works.
What you really need is a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort to HDCP conversion. Or directly a miniDisplayPort to HDCP cable. Those are the only routes that are guaranteed to work passing HD video DRM/encryption signals along.
But as far as i know neither of these two cables are available yet.
Which might be the reason why Apple - for the time being - allows your miniDisplayPort to DVI route to work. Emphasis on +for the time being+.
I would not count on the fact that this will work forever.
And I would certainly not count on a software update that will make the DVI route work. This will never work due to DVI's incapacity of providing DRM/encryption signals for HD content.

  • When I tap a photo in my iPhone photo gallery, the photo appears but there is always a "this movie format not supported" alert and then the alert goes away and the photo appears. These are photos I've taken with the iPhone and aren't even movies.

It's very odd. I take photos with my iPhone and then later go to view the photos in the Photo Gallery on my iPhone. The photos to appear, but I keep getting "this movie format not supported" alerts, even though I am looking at photos taken by my iPhone. The alert appears briefly just after the photo appears and then the alert goes away and I can see the photo. They are just still photos and not movies. Why wouldn't the iPhone recognize the format of photos it is taking?

That thread helped for a time.  But now it seems as though my computer is back to slow again.  But, some of the jargon is over my head as well.  Not sure I knew quoite everything they were talking about.  But thanks a lot for that, it helped I probably just need to reread it and follow the instructions again.  Thanks so much.
