ORACLE'S IDENTIFIER LENGTH

IS ORACLE'S IDENTIFIER LENGTH FIXIED AT 30 CHARATERS? OR THERE IS A SETTING CAN BE MODIFIED?
THANKS

It's fixed for things like tables, columns, usernames, indexes, procedures, etc. Database links can be 128 characters. Long experience and tired fingers says that 30 characters is plenty, and ideally most database object names ought to be well under 20 characters.
Here are some tips:[list]
[*]Learn to use abbreviations and standardise them with your colleagues.
[*]Don't duplicate info. If the table is owned by the SALES account don't call the table SALES_MONTHLY_TOTALS: MONTHLY_TOTALS will do.
[*]There's probably more, but my wife wants me home.

P.S. Have you heard of this great new technological invention, the SHIFT key? It means we can now type in Mixed Case, which is So Much Easier To Read THAN ALL CAPITALS. Check it out!

  • What are the solutions offered by Oracle to handle length based products

    We are on 11.5.10. Current version treats beams as each, we have 30 feet beams, 20 feet beams etc.
    We do not want to set-up different items for each length of beam.
    We need ability to tell we have 10 pieces of 26 feet beams in inventory.
    Currently we can only tell we have 260 feet of beams.
    Current solution treats it discretley. We need ability to sell length based items, receive length based items, do inventory management based on length based items.

  • Identifier length exceeds the maximum of 31 characters

    I use the sun f90 compiler to compile a subroutine. However, the compiler told me the subroutine's name is too long. Deos anybody know how to solve this problem? I really need such long subroutine name. Many thanks!
    % f90 -DCAM -DNO_SHR_VMATH -DHIDE_SHR_MSG -inline=%auto -fast -g -fsimple=1 -fns=no -O4 -DHIDE_MPI -g -c gfdl_column_diagnostics_mod.F90
    gfdl_column_diagnostics_mod.F90", Line = 379, Column = 15: ERROR: Identifier length exceeds the maximum of 31 characters.

    Thanks for your reply!
    The version we use is:
    Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 Fortran 95 6.2 2001/05/15
    Must we update our compiler to enable longer
    identifiers?Yes, I am afraid so. You can download the latest version at no charge
    from Sun's website. I suggest waiting until Monday or Tuesday to
    download it.
    You might have a problem mixing old and new .mod files with such an
    old version of the compiler. You should plan on recompiling all your
    files that contain modules.

  • Download Patch Set without Oracle Support Identifier

    How do you download the Patch Set under the developer licences. I don't have a Oracle support identifier.
    The relevance of this question is, when you have 4.2 on an Oracle Express instance how do you upgrade it to 4.2.1
    Can the 4.2.1 full download be used?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    The developer base volume and software application user volumes have to be miles apart. :-)
    And commercial reality I expect will come from the user volume base (as in users using software built by developers).
    It is the era of .99cent apps and that model is effective when you have large consumption. How about all forum users have a registration fee of $2.00? :-)
    Anyway's the current scenario is not increasing take-up :-)
    e.g. Developer downloads express edition, this comes with a version of apex. Along comes new apex version. Now what is the upgrade path to try/test the new features.
    Keep in mind release cycles are shorter nowadays.
    We live in the era of VM's now.
    I want to be making 1 steps forward (upgrade apex) not 2 step back(export applications and misc, un-install apex) and then 2 steps forward (install apex, import applications and misc).

  • Error when calling a Oracle package with length 30 (ORA-01948)

    Hi...,
    When I call a Oracle package I get this error message.
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01948: identifier's name length (39) exceeds maximum (30)
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_PICKLER", line 18
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_PICKLER", line 58
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    There is not way we can change the package name. How do we fix it on the java side?
    Regards,
    Praveen

    The statement 'ORA-01948' is coming from the database and not your java program. Therefore you cant fix it on the java side. There is some stored procedure, stored function, or other such code on the database that is too long. Use a database utility tool such as 'Toad' to examine the database and see if you can find what SYS.DBMS_PICKLER means.
    Here is a definition of ORA-01948 I found on the internet:
    ORA-01948: identifier's name length (string) exceeds maximum (string)
    Cause: A name has been specified that is too long. For example, dbms_session.is_role_enabled() specifies a role name that is too long.
    Action: Change the application or command to use a correct identifier.

  • Does Oracle allows zero length string

    Hi,
    I tried to insert zero length string ('') into an Oracle table, a null value and a non-empty string. But I found that zero length string and null are stored as NULL in the column.
    Create table test (col1 number(2), col2 varchar(10));
    Insert into test values (1, 'hi');
    Insert into test values (2, NULL);
    Insert into test values (3, '');
    Select * from test where col2 is null;
    Result: 2 rows
    Select * from test where col2 = '';
    Result: 0 rows
    Is this to do with some environment setting in SQL* Plus or does oracle doesn't allow zero length string?

    Oracle treats '' as NULL.
    There are frequent murmurs that some new version of Oracle is going to change this behaviour (I believe it's not ANSI-compliant) but I doubt that they will, as it will break too many old applications.
    Cheers, APC

    it is showing synonyms created ...
    but it gets converted into encrypted forms,
    due to this i m not able to use actual synonyms that i have created
    so tell me how can i create synonyms of more than 30 characters
    If this is not possible , then wht else solution by which i can solve ma problem.

  • Oracle 9ir2 Max length of element/field name?

    Does anyone know what the max length of a element/field name can be in Oracle 9ir2?
    thanks,
    -mcd

    Thanks.. So, the max length is still 30.. what about this:
    Is this also true for the length of element names defined in an XML schema for use by Oracle XML DB?
    There are two ways in which XDB can absorb a schema -- one that causes the XMLTYPE to be stored in a CLOB, the other causes the XMLTYPE to be broken down into relational tables behind the scenes. The latter uses the element names for the table names, so I'm assuming it would be restricted by the 30-character column name limit (unless XDB has some way of truncating the column names but preserving the element names). But what about the case where the XMLTYPE is stored in a CLOB? In theory, there's nothing limiting the length of the element name.

  • Oracle Client Identifier, Web, JPA

    I am working on a Web application that uses Struts along with EJB3. I want to user Oracle Virtual Private Database to restrict access to data based on the current user.
    Is there any way to set the Client_Identifier based on the Principal currently using the connection? I am looking to see if there are perhaps any Interceptors I could use or some function of JPA that allows me access to the connection just before it is actually used. Any idea?

    Hello,
    in my java web app running on Weblogic which uses connection pooling, I am calling an Oracle Stored Proc that sets client identifier to userid using dbms_session.set_identifier
    I then retrieve it in triggers attached to db tables to capture before-after image
    I must have missed a step because this is what I find (testing locally):
    1. I login to my app as USER1 and update some data
    2. I check the audit tables and sure enough last_updated_by is set to USER1
    3. Without logging out, I start a different browser (Firefox, in step 1 I used Chrome) and login as USER2
    4. I now switch to USER1 session in Chrome browser (still logged in as USER1) and update some data
    5. This time I see that the audit tables show last_updated_by as USER2 (instead of USER1)
    What am I missing?
    Many thanks!since Connection Pooling is being used, do you acknowledge that both USER1 & USER2 could actually use the same Oracle session to execute SQL?
    At what point in time is the Stored Procedure that sets Client Identifier actually called?
    How do I ask a question on the forums?

  • Oracle support identifier

    I have logged into metalink.oracle.com and trying to complete the registration process, It asks me for a support identifier? I have downloaded oracle 10g for linux. Where do I get this from ?
    Prashanth

    You contact your local Oracle Sales person, and purchase a license, which includes a support contract. When you've done that, Oracle will provide you with a CSI number. That number is entered, and that will authorize you to access MetaLink.

  • Setting Oracle session identifier from TopLink

    To audit which users make which changes to the DB via Oracle auditing, I would like to call DBMS_SESSION.SET_IDENTIFIER(userID) before a UnitOfWork commits. After the UnitOfWork commits or rolls back, I would like to reset the identifer to empty string. Here's what I've come up with:
    class MyEventAdapter extends SessionEventAdapter {
    private boolean hasSetSessionID = false;
    private static void setSessionIdentifier(UnitOfWork uow, String id) {
    StoredProcedureCall call = new StoredProcedureCall();
    call.setProcedureName("DBMS_SESSION.SET_IDENTIFIER");
    call.addUnamedArgumentValue(id);
    uow.executeNonSelectingCall(call);
    public void preCommitUnitOfWork(SessionEvent event) {
    setSessionIdentifier((UnitOfWork)event.getSession(), userID);
    hasSetSessionID = true;
    public void postCommitUnitOfWork(SessionEvent event) {
    setSessionIdentifier((UnitOfWork)event.getSession(), "");
    hasSetSessionID = false;
    public void preReleaseUnitOfWork(SessionEvent event) {
    if (hasSetSessionID) {
    setSessionIdentifier((UnitOfWork)event.getSession(), "");
    hasSetSessionID = false;
    uow.getEventManager().addListener(new MyEventAdapter());
    Looks OK? Any better ways to do it?
    NOTE: This needs to work in a managed environment - JTA + external connection pooling.

    1. ... I am not able to read the session value of P1_ITEM1 in the PL/SQL procedure. Am I doing something wrong, or is this by design? I would like to read the session values as well as modifying some of them.This is by design. That function access session state held in PL/SQL arrays in package state. The package state exists only in the database session used to service the HTTP apex page request.
    So, is there any other (recommended) way to read the values in session state?
    I can get the values directly by selecting from wwv_flow_data, but I'd like to use a supported API if there is one.
    2. I could only set the security group ID (using wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id) if the schema in which the procedure runs is associated with the workspace. Otherwise the value after the call would be 0 (zero) but no error was raised. Is this by design?Yes, so that you can't access workspaces you are not authorized to access.Fair enough, just wanted to get the behavior confirmed.

  • How to increase the length of the identifier?

    I want to create a table with a column name as:
    "domainnameregistrationassistance"
    oracle 9i does not allow me to do this.
    as the identifier length is fixed to 30 characters.
    how do i increase the length of the identifier?
    any help on this will be great!

    Don't forget that there is a comment space for each table
    and column, so calling the column DNR_ASSIST doesnt
    revent you from doing ...
    COMMENT ON TABLE M_SCHEMA.DNR_ASSIST IS '
    Domain Name Registration Assistance';

  • Oracle table size

    We have oracle 10G. We need to replicate data from mysql database into oracle using java/xml program. According to the java program, it looks for the same table names on mysql and oracle . One of the oracle table names is different than the table name on mysql database since oracle doesn't allow more thwn 30 characters to create an object.
    Is there any way to insert data into oracle table based on the above conditions.
    Thanks in advance.

    Not sure how to work on it, but have you try to work with synonym ? Oracle synonym length may be on more than 30 characters for Java.
