Oracle, VMS, and Forte

What is the most recent version of Oracle in use with Forte under VMS, and
what version of Forte are you using with it? We're at Forte 3.0.G.2, but
still at Oracle 7.3.2.3.0, because when we tried 7.3.2.3.2 it wouldn't link
(and no, I don't remember the version of Forte - sorry!). Forte support
keeps telling us the current version "should work", but I'd like to know
what "will work".
Thanks,

G'Day Tom
FWIW, as of three days ago we have:
OpenVMS v7.1
Oracle v7.3.2.3.2
Forte v30G2
The local Forte apps are limited and small to date. Testing (including Y2K)
failed to show any problems with Forte and Oracle.
I'd be interested to know about any specific problem you have with Oracle
v73232 and Forte (30G2).

  • Re: Crystal Reports 5.0 (32-Bit) and Forte 2.0H16 on NT3.51

    Dear Silke,
    Crystal's default for identifying a table in the report design is
    <schema>.<table>. You can change that by going to the Database Location menu
    item and cutting the schema prefix off. You should do that for every table in
    the report. The PESetNthTableLogOnInfo function will, I believe, not change
    the schema prefix of a table, since it assumes you really want that schema,
    i.e., as an override. Also, if you are using the propagateAcrossAllTables
    feature of the function make sure that every table has the schema prefix cut
    off, otherwise those tables will be skipped, since the propagate feature applies
    to all other similar tables only. For example, some of the tables could be
    Sybase, etc.
    I believe you can change the default behaviour of the CR Report Designer in the
    File->Preferences menu, so that when reports are designed the schema prefix is
    not automatically attached.
    I have compiled some guidelines on designing reports to make them work properly
    with Forte. I will try to send them to you next week. Crystal Reports and its
    C API are a good product, and you will get good performance once the report
    design is set up properly.
    Yours very sincerely, John Hodgson.

    Hi There,
    Crystal reports stores Database name as a hard-coded
    value in the
    report template. So if you have to use an other
    database, you will
    have to open the report template and modify the
    database name. I
    think this is why you are getting Crystal API error.
    Hope this helps!

    Hello,
    I wonder if we have a similar problem.
    We are using Crystal Reports 5 and Forte 3.0.F.2. For
    the interface
    between Forte and Crystal we have in Forte a Lib using
    C-wrappering to
    the C-API of Crystal.
    We have developed a report on a database in our
    development-environment. This report comes up with data
    and works
    correct. It's no different if we have saved the report
    in Crystal with
    data or without.
    If we want to use the same report on another database
    in our
    test-environment the window from crystal reports comes
    up and when
    starting there is an error from the Crystal API
    function.
    Both environments use the same version of an Oracle
    Database and are on
    Open VMS. The client for the test is in this case
    always the same.
    From the C-API we use the method PEStartPrintJob after
    we have specified
    the rest for the report.
    Is there a possibility that this is the same error you
    mentioned? Or do
    you have any other ideas?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Tim,
    You need to upgrade to CrystalReports 6.0. There isa bug in the
    interaction between Forte and CrystalReports 5.0 (Idon't know on
    which side the bug resides, but I think that it is onthe Crystal end,
    since the problem occurs both through C-wrapperingand OLE
    interaction), which does not allow you to invoke thePrintReport
    method unless you have saved data with the report.
    As far as I know, there is no workaround, and theonly solution is to
    upgrade to CrystalReports 6.0.
    FYI, there is no ActiveX control supplied withCrystalReports 5.0 -
    you are actually using standard OLE integration.
    Hope this helps...

  • RE: NT Server Reboot and Forte Partitions[Ref:C943460]

    Hi Bradley.
    At our customers, we need one of our Forte applications to be running for data
    communications to take place. After a reboot, we need this application's
    partitions to come online. The way we did this (as you suggested) was to use a
    BAT file, and then install this as an NT service (we used a utility that comes
    with the NT resource kit - srvany).
    This works fine for us. One of the issues we had was that the partitions tried
    to come online before Oracle was running - this resulted in the dbsessions
    failing and the partitions not coming online. We got round this by preceding
    starting the partitions with a loop that polled Oracle until it was up. Needless
    to say, piping all output to log files was essential for us to figure out what
    was going on.

    I have a system administration question for users with NT servers in
    their Forte environment. If I have installed Forte partitions on an NT
    server which I would like to startup when the server is rebooted, then
    what are my options for scripting this to happen automatically?
    Currently the only Forte process on the server which starts up
    automatically is the Forte node manager, through the installed NT
    service. I have been contemplating setting up a BAT file process as an

    How is this situation being handled in other environments? Thanks.

    Hi Brad,
    I am not sure if this is the right solution in the long run, but if you
    login into NT after reebot you can create a simple client that "pings" your
    service objects and put the shortcut into the Startup Group. I think such a
    client may also be useful to monitor your Forte server for application
    specific parameters, instead of relying only on logs/econsole.

  • Oracle VM and storage network

    I am running Oracle VM 3.1.1 on a server with 4 ethernet interfaces.
    bond0 is setup with eth0 and eth1 and bond mode is active/backup. This bond is used by the managed network.
    bond1 is setup with eth2 and eth3 and bond mode is dynamic link aggregation. This bond is used by public network.
    Managed network channels: Server Management, Cluster Meartbeat and Live Migration
    Public network channels: Storage and Virtual Machine
    All my 7 virtual machines are installed on separte physical disk using iSCSI.
    95% of my network traffic on dom0 is going though eth0, so I belive that iSCSI is not using the public network.
    How can I make my VM use bond1 / public network for iSCSI traffic?
    The managed nework did have storage assigned when I created the storage connection, but I have rebooted dom0 after applying the settings above. Can this be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Thomas

    It matters if the traffic is routed or not. "Routing" traffic and "switching" traffic are two different things and the "bandiwidth" rating on "routing" traffic versus "switching" traffic are considerably lower. More takes place when a "packet" is routed than when it just uses layer 2 traffic. This must be taken in consideration when planning traffic between your VM servers and its respective "storage, VMs and etc. Personally, I would never have that traffic "routed". Never. Do it if you like. I wouldn't recommend it. Any time your "hop" to a target... you introduce latency. Maybe your network fabric can handle it now... But what will happen when you start adding to your environment?
    Remember the maximumn throughput on a 1 GB connection is 125mbs. Even creating a 2 member bond just gives you 250/mbs. Throw a "hop" in the mix....... I just don't like the numbers. Especially if you're going to run several VM guests on one server.
    I feel your pain. Oracle VM can be a complicated product to use if you don't understand its full functionality. If you don't have your system in production.... then change it. Go through the headache now. Oracle VM works very well when it is setup properly. Very well. I just implemented a RAC environment running Oracle's ERP systems for several hundred users. It works great. Haven't had one problem since the migration. Performance is spectacular...

    I think others have answered most of your questions, but you indicated that "iTunes 10 is for Intel Macs only" -- that is not actually correct, you can certainly run iTunes 10 on your G5 PowerPC. What you need to do is:
    (1) upgrade to 10.5 operating system
    (2) upgrade to iTunes 10
    While Apple doesn't officially sell 10.5 anymore (Apple sells 10.6, but 10.6 won't install on your G5 PowerPC), if you call their 800 number and explain that you need it to use your new iPhone, they may be able to sell you a copy from old inventory. Alternatively, some retailers are still selling older inventory 10.5 install DVDs but you need the version that installs on any computer, many 10.5 disks are made for a specific model only.
    Before you do either (1) or (2) above, make sure you have enough memory as indicated by Apple in their system requirements. If you need more memory, it is inexpensive to upgrade.

    I'm in the process of getting a specification for a new Oracle VM host server which will run OEL VMs and host Oracle databases (10g and others), currently we're looking at getting an HP DL580 and a MSL6000 tape library using SAS connectors.
    Regarding backups, I understand that Oracle VM Server doesn't have a built in mechanism for backups so would need to use a backup method from within the virtual machines.
    Is it possible, and advisable, to use a tape library directly attached to the host server and use an OEL VM running Symantec Netbackup which will then backup the other VMs, if so, are there any issues or gotchas I should be aware of?
    If it is possible to do this, do I connect the tape library to the VM by editing the VM config file and add the tape library devices as 'phy:/dev/xxx'
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

    NDMP is for backing up NAS platforms.
    Does your backup software support "LAN-Free" backup ? Typically enterprise backup software like Netbackup, TSM, Networker require a special license/agent that gets loaded on server where you are going to implement LAN-Free backups. Without that software/license servers will be fighting for tape resources and it will be a mess (if it works at all). Also you want to use dedicated HBA or port on dual HBA for tape traffic, do not mix tape and disk traffic on the same HBA/port. In big shops people configure dedicated "tape" VSANs but that would be an overkill for your current environment.

    taking place to close database connections. But just to be safe verify it
    in your test environment before moving to 3.5. To verify if its happening
    in your Forte version just create a small application that connects to the
    database and run it in debug mode. Log into the database and then stop the
    debug session. The connection will still be open. This will also occur
    when you use the running man or in a deployed application.

  • CAC or smart card use with Oracle database and web server

    I've been asked to smart card (CAC) enable our Oracle web server and database access. We currently use CAC to access many of our other applications.

  • JSDK 1.4 and Forte on Windows 98 - which version?

    Hello all,
    I am brand spanking new to Java ... so please bear with me. I have just installed the latest and greatest SDK
    1.4. I have also acquired a great book on Java programming which contained on the CD , SDK 1.3.1 and FORTE 2.0 Community Edition. I am also running on Windows 98SE.
    According to the docs, Forte 2.0 needs an NT machine or WIndows 2000 to run. I also found that the 3.0 version of Forte can run on Windows 98, but I need the
    JSDK 1.3.1 (so it says) to run FORTE 3.0.
    I am assuming that I can download/install FORTE 3.0
    from this site and install with the JSDK 1.4 (hoping for a little backward compatability)........
    Does anyone know if this is do-able?????...... I was kind of bummed when I saw that the 2.0 would only work on NT/2000 platforms...
    Thanks very much

    THanks for the prompt response guys....... I was laid off about 6 weeks ago .... I am an Oracle guy (Developed using Oracle FORMS and REPORTS), but from everything I see and hear it seems that JAVA will be the development tool for Oracle databases.... sooooo, since
    I have some "free" time, I've decided to learn JAVA and get my Sun Certification....... lots of work, but I am
    quite excited, so if you see my postings and they look kind of weird , it's my learning curve so-to-speak talking,

  • Can  RAC support Oracle VMs ONLY ?

    Can RAC support Oracle VMs (virtual servers only) ? ie No physical servers.
    or must have a mix of physical and virtual servers for RAC ?
    QN

    No Real Application Cluster technology has ever supported more than one database.Quite untrue.
    I know that both you and Tom Kyte take the stand that a cluster should have only 1 instance per node.
    That doesn't mean that it is not possible to have more than one database in a cluster -- i.e more than one instance in a node.
    That doesn't mean that it must always be so. Installing a separate cluster and additional EE + RAC licences for a separate database can be quite expensive. Of course, your reply is "consolidate". That is another debate that has been going on for years.
    A discussion on multiple databases on RAC is also at

  • Installation of Oracle VMs

    Hi All,
    I am using VMWare on my laptop to study the R12. (R12 is installed on Win2003)
    VMWare is installed on laptop and it is mapped with .vxd file on my external hard-disk (This .vxd file if for Windows 2003 and and this Win2003 contains R12).
    So I have to start the VMWare and power-on the mapped the .vxd file only.
    I want to use the Oracle VM.
    But I am not able to understand how to install Oracle VMs.
    Once it asks to install Oracle VM virtual Box and then map it to pre-built Appliances.
    But I saw the some documents stating the steps to first install the Oracle VM Manager then Oracle VM Server then map it to Oracle VM templates.
    This step in detail ask to create some bootable CD and for 2 machines first for VM Manager other for server.
    Please let me know the correct steps to install the Oracle VM for R12 and what files need to be downloaded.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Upender

    In order to run any Oracle VM's you have to have Oracle VM server and Oracle VM Manager (although you can create vm's outside of the VM manager, you need VM Manager to create the "Server Pool" and setup the roles of the individual servers.
    I would start here to get a better understanding of this:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11081_01/doc/doc.21/e10898/ovmserver.htm
    Also, I'm not going to pretend to know how all this is setup on a single stand alone machine already running windows but you will end up with something like this (high level)
    1. One dedicated Oracle VM server machine from which you will be using the resources, ie. cpu, memory, IO etc to run all VM"s. Think of this in vmware speak as having one ESX host machine where all the vm's are stored, same concept. The VM server is the home to all the vm's running. It's only when you setup the server pools and servers that you desinate the roles of each server, master, utility or vm server. From there you can add additional servers to act as VM servers only. In a HA failover scenario if the main pool master goes down, one of the other vm servers are called into action to fulfill that role.
    2. One dedicated Oracle VM Manager machine (physical or virtual) but only virtual if it is not created in DOM0, as this is unsupported. What does this mean you might ask? Well it means that if you install oracle server on server #1 you do not want to install VM Manager on that same machine. It has to be on a seperate box or in a vm created just for this purpose. On the download page you can download a prebuilt template already running VM Manager on top of the Oracle OS.
    3. You can use local storage for doing all this but in a larger environment you should use iscsi, nfs or fiber to a backend SAN device. If you are going to use local storage for a root repository (you will find this in further reading) you have to make sure you have 30-50% overhead for space on your system. NOTE: I set this up on one server in my early stages and have a 300gb set of drives which filled up fairly fast as the iso's and templates can be rather large so plan accordingly here... This setup was me attempting to run r12 38gb download along with Oracle Vm manager templates and 1 Oracle Linux template.
    I hope you find this information useful and inlighting. You have a long way to go and my recommendation to you is to pour over the documentation as this will provide you with the best direction.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11081_01/doc/nav/portal_booklist.htm
    If you were looking for a quick and easy way of setting this up, I've not found one.....
    Good Luck!

  • Oracle, Null and empty Strings

    Currently I'm facing problems with a class, which contains a String, which
    is set to "" (empty String).
    When the class is persistent, oracle writes null to the table column
    (which seems to be common oracle behaviour) and when retrieving the class,
    the field is set to null as well, giving me a lot of null-pointer
    exceptions.
    Anyway ... I can cope with that (just a lot of extra work)
    far worse is the problem, wenn searching objects, that have this field set
    to "" oder null.
    Oracle can't find the records because JDO creates Querys "where
    string=null" or "where string=''" , where oracle expects "where string is
    null" to find the records.
    Is there a workaround or solution ?

    Yeah, that would work as well, thx, but since I have to cope with
    null-Strings now everywhere in my program, it doesn't hurt just to forbid
    empty strings on the program side.
    In future times I'll test on Oracle first, then porting to DB/2 - this way
    I suppose work is far less to garant compability.
    Nevertheless ... having to set the bankcode into quotes is a kodo bug in
    my opinion.
    Kodo knows the type of classfields (in this case string) and shouldn't
    send the parameter as a BigDecimal to the database.
    Given that, and having only bankcodes of null (only neccesary when using
    Oracle), the method would look like:
    public Collection getAccounts (String bankCode)
    throws Exception
    return getAccounts (Account.class, "bankcode=="+bankcode);
    which is how a transparent persistent layer, um, should be , um , I mean
    ... just transparent ;-D
    Marc Prud'hommeaux wrote:
    Stefan-
    Couldn't you just do something like:
    public Collection getAccounts (String bankCode)
    throws Exception
    String filter;
    if (bankCode == null || bankCode.length () == 0)
    filter = "(bankCode == null || bankCode == "")";
    else
    filter = "bankCode == "" + bankCode + """;
    return getAccounts (Account.class, filter);
    If I understand the problem correctly, this should work for all the
    databases.
    In article <[email protected]>, Stefan wrote:
    What operations are you performing to cause this SQL to be issued? You
    say you are having trouble removing objects, but this is clearly not a
    DELETE statement. Is this the SQL that is issued when looking up
    objects by identity?I'm not removing objects, I was removing just quotes from parameters ;-)
    A string column... is it also represented as a string field in your class?Yeah ... just to give you an impression of the code:
    First we have a class, representing a bank account:
    public class Account {
    private AccountMgr myAccountMgr;
    private String bankCode;
    private String id;
    Note, that in nearly all cases bankCode will be a number or null.
    I have a second class "AccountMgr", which does all of the persistant stuff
    (seaching, making persistent etc.)
    This class has two methods, one versatile (protected) to retrieve accounts
    by a given filterString and one who just returns accounts by bankCode,
    building the expected filterstring. Here is my current working version:
    public class AccountMgr {
    public Collection getAccounts(String bankCode) throws Exception {
    if (bankCode!=null) {
    if (bankCode.equals("")) {
    throw new Exception("check code, bankCode='' not allowed to get
    same behavior from DB2 and Oracle");
    // if set, quote the bankCode
    bankCode="""+bankCode+""";
    return getAccounts(Account.class,"bankCode=="+bankCode);
    protected Collection getAccounts(Class accountClass, String filterAdd)
    throws Exception {
    PersistenceManager pm = MyHelper.getPersistenceManager();
    String filter="";
    if (filterAdd!=null && !filterAdd.trim().equals("")) {
    filter+=filterAdd + " && ";
    filter += "myAccountMgr==_accMgr";
    Query query = pm.newQuery(accountClass, filter);
    query.declareParameters("AccountMgr _accMgr");
    return (Collection) query.execute(this);
    As you can see, in the first method I have to set the bankCode into
    quotes, when it's not null.
    This is because otherwise a filter like "bankCode=1234" will be translated
    in a way, where 1234 is send as a BigDecimal to the database:
    [...] executing statement <4239745>: (SELECT [...] FROM JDO_ACCOUNT t0
    WHERE t0.BANKCODE = ? : [reused=1;params={(BigDecimal) 1234}]

    So Can someone tell me how to solve this problem ? Is there a parameter in oracle 9 to set?
    Thanx.

    Whenever you are posting anything over internet forums like this - you should be very careful about not just posting the details which requires to solve the problem - also should be sensible about your question.
    This is not at all desired when you are posting such question. It may be because - you may not well aware of the fact.
    My suggestion is -> First Go through the basics Of SQL in general.
    Then go for any specific product like Oracle/ SQL Server/ Sybase etc.
    And, finally learn the advanced commands of that DB.
    You asked it - may be you thought the difference in output in terms of lines. But, that is not your actual output. That is the graphical display part only.
    Anyway,
    You can get the quite familier output by first type the following command ->
    set lin 310Regards.
