Ordering an E540: SSD option

Hello all,
I am interested in getting an E540.
The ordering/configuration page specifies SSD or HD but not both.
My plan is to use the M.2 connector to install a primary SSD (AFAIK only 128GB as it's a 42mm slot)
and use the HD bay for another HD/SSD.
My question is: is the SSD option shipping with an M.2 SSD, leaving the HD bay free ... or a 128GB SSD in the HD bay, leaving the M.2 slot free ?
On a side issue: My intent is to use the M.2 SSD for the OS install (Linux) not as cache.
Any thoughts and recomendatioins welcomed :-)
Thank you.
Cheers.

Hello and welcome,
I'm only going by what I read, but it looks like in the as-shipped configuration the M.2 option is only used for cache and the data/OS drive is 2.5" whether it is an HDD or SSD.
Snips from the tabook:
[edit] Looking around the web at retailers of the 20c6008uus - as an example.  They tend to list the 128GB SSD this way:
Solid State Drive Capacity
128 GB
Solid State Drive Interface
M.2
That's a little confusing.  If they're referring to the OS SSD in both cases, then it's M.2.  My suspicion is that they're conflating the two drive locations.
I guess we could use a more definitive answer.

  • E540 SSD caching - how to make it work

Hello. Does anyone know how can I rebuild E540 SSD caching? The problem is, that I formatted the whole notebook (1TB HDD + 16 GB SSD) and now after fresh install of Windows 8.1 it doesn't seem to use the 16 GB SSD as cache. I installed Intel Rapid Storage, but I can't install Intel Smart Response (which seems to do the SSD-caching) because it needs the RAID to be enable in BIOS but I don't have such an option. Any idea how to make it work?
    Thanks in advance!

I think you need the ExpressCache package.
Well that seems to do the trick. The quiestion is  - why? On lenovo expresscache download page (http://support.lenovo.com/en/downloads/ds035460) my model (E540) isn't listed in the supported models. That's why I didn't even try it. Although I was considering this until I saw, that my model is not supported.

  • Looking For 2009 Xserve SSD Option Parts

I just purchased a "new" fully loaded 2009 Xserve that has everything except the SSD option and I need it. Anybody here have a source for the 3 parts besides eBay and Amazon? The part numbers are...
    661-5067 (SSD)
    992-8958 (SSD Cable)
    992-8959 (SSD Bracket)
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Chris,
Have you used Impact before? I have attempted to order these parts from 2 vendors now who have advertised them as "in stock" only to have them subsequently cancel my order after putting holds on my bank account funds because they didn't really have the parts to begin with. Apparently it's accepted behavior to advertise the entirety of Apple's part catalog and hope somebody will order something, whether you have the things you have advertised or not. The picture Impact has posted of the drive isn't even close to the specs of the real drive, so I'm suspicious.
After the 2 disappointments, I went ahead and bought the cable from an eBay vendor and I bought the exact same Samsung drive but without the Apple logo, also from an eBay vendor. I got the drive today and the cable should arrive tomorrow. If it all works, I'll go after the bracket next week.
    I'll post the results.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

You don't need to upgrade your software.  But if you're struggling with Spry, IMO you should cut your losses and switch to something better for the longrun.
If you have a budget to work with, I highly recommend Project Seven's Pop-Menu Magic 3.  It's easy to use in DW CS4, 5, 6 or CC.  More importantly, it's bullet proof and works in all devices.

If you don't have a budget to work with, you can roll your own menus with jQuery plugins.  A bit more effort on your part, but they perform better than Spry.

I want to order files (e.g., photos) in a particular order (not necessarily an order that is an option in MacOS. Ie, my own custom order, and I want them STAY in that order until I change the order. Is this possible?

Custom sort order is not a typical option in the list view of any desktop computing systems I know of. The way you're seeing it work is also how it works in Windows and other systems.
There is no "None" sort order. What you're seeing is a "None" option under "Arrange By." Arranging is not the same as sorting; arranging is how the files are grouped in the window. For example, you can arrange (group) files by Kind while sorting by Name. You'll notice that if you are in List view and you choose Arrange By "None," in the window there is still a sort triangle next to the column name that it's sorting by.
If Arrange is set to None, the files appear in one big group (the traditional view) that is controlled by the Sort order (where there is no None option).
I didn't even know the difference between Sort and Arrange until I saw your question and did a little research! This Macworld article helped:
How to arrange and sort files in Lion Finder (also applies to later OSs like Mavericks)
As for your main question, how to do a custom sort order in the Finder, you can only rearrange files manually in Icon view. As with other operating systems, if you want to create a custom sort order for photos there are other ways:
Use a photo organizer application like iPhoto or Lightroom. Some let you have custom sort orders in folders, but others only let you have a custom sort inside a different container like an "album" or "collection". Having those additional container types is part of why photos are often best managed in an organizer application and not on the desktop.
Rename the files. You can use a renaming utility program to rename the photos with numbers that will enforce your sort order when sorted by name on the desktop, like
    01 Photo.jpg
    01 Photo.jpg
    01 Photo.jpg
    or
    Photo 01.jpg
    Photo 02.jpg

  • SSD Options for 2710p

Are there any 64+GB SSD options for a 2710p? HP used to have a model that came with an SSD, can the drive be purchased separately? I found a couple 1.8" ZIF drives, but nothing exceeds 32GB without costing almost a grand.

Thank you for the very helpful and excellent post in this. I looking at the Runcore 64 SSD Pro IV RCP-IV-Z1864-C for my 2710p,
    it shows to be compatible.
However mine does not have a HD so I have to do a fresh install, use a USD external DVD drive to load windows with, it should boot to this external drive.
I missed or just not sharp enough to get it where you 'lift the bar'  to remove or incert the ribbon connector to the new drive ? I guess I should wait until it arrives first. Can you clear me up please on how to make sure the connector is correctly incerted into the new drive please ?
Also I am missuing the hard drive braclet and two screws, any idea where I can find these. I am searching the net but no luck so far ?
    Thanks again,
    bruce.

  • No 256GB SSD option in late 2012?!?

So just noticed that the new iMacs are now in the online store and was excited to check out price and options... but OMG you can no longer order it with a 256GB SSD?!? Only a 768GB option wich costs a small fortune! I mean the "fusion drive" is fine for the non-tech people who swallow all the hype raw, but many of us want a real SSD and a second normal big HD. There is no way I am upgrading now like I was pondering.

Apple doesn't like users to have many options.

  • SSD Options for W520

Hi, all. I'm shopping around for a SSD to replace the mechanical drive in the new W520 I just purchased, and would like some input. I know that performance tends to improve in higher capacity drives, but I'd like to keep my SSD budget under $350. Right now, the 128GB Crucial m4 (approx. $240) is looking like a good drive for that price range. Can anyone think of a faster/larger capacity SSD in my price range?
I know that the Vertex 3, the first of the SandForce-2000 drives, is now out, and it seems to be insanely fast. I'd like to get one for my laptop, but I'm probably not going to spring for that particular drive, because of several W520 users having issues fitting it in the case. Should I wait until more SandForce-2000 drives are out before buying a solid-state drive?

Hi tek and welcome to the forum,
Whatever you choose you don't have to buy a new license for Windows. If you do have a standard Windows installaton media (same edition as the one that came with your computer) the key you can find on a sticker under your computer or behind the battery should work fine. So if the key is for Windows 7 Prof you need a Windows 7 Prof media kit. The automatic internet activation will fail and you will be given a list of phone numbers to activate by phone. Choose the correct phone number for your country and do a automatic activation by phone (don't need to talk to anyone).
Another option would be to use the recovery media set from Lenovo and it should work fine with the SSD and no need to buy a new Windows license. I never tried this approach, but it should work.
Using a tool to create a image and recover on the SSD should work as well. The only issue i can think of is the SSD alignment which is important for the write speed. There are some more details about the SSD alignment here:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/113967-ssd-alignment.html
Whether or not Ghost handle this and make sure the alignment is correct i don't know.
Here is also a calculator to check if the alignment is correct if you decide to try Ghost or some other tool:

  • SSD option for iMac when working off external worth it.

Ordering the maxed out iMac 27 i7 16g ram etc. is the SSD helpful if I work off externals for all my media etc.
I have the Air and see the boost for start up and application load times. Other than that is it really a boost for working with say FCP with media on an external drive.
I would assume the boost only helps if the files are on the actual ssd which given its size is not possible.
    So a bottleneck occurs.
Just could use 600$ in other areas if I only gain a fast startup and fast app loading.
    Thanks

Thank you and so well spoken baltwo
I have gotten so much "your crazy" from my buddy for spending tha max on everything else why not just SSD.
Just seemed at 600$ what's the gain if all my content is bottle necked on a second drive Or external....what's the point. Rather spend that cash on proper backing up solutions etc.
Guess I was feeling what we all are getting caught up in this SSD speed vacum. I have the air it's snappy and great but all files are residing on the drive. Not happening on an iMac so was wondering how much of gain is true to form.

  • 2012 Macbook pro 13" 2.9Ghz i7 ssd options

    Hey everyone,
    This is my first discussion!
So I owned 2010 mbp 13 inch base model but after failing few times
Apple has finally decided to replace my machine to a brand new 2012 machine
and I am so excited! Becauase of my budget I chose 2.9Ghz i7 750gb hd
and I only paid $300 out of my pocket for an upgrade!
So now I want to upgrade my HD to SSD and what are my options?
And what exact SSD model do I need (Like SATA ii/iii) I am so confused
I am thinking of getting between 128gb or 256(?)gb
    1. Intel
    2. Samsung
    3. OWC
    4. crucial
What are my best option on price range (below $280), speed, realibility, easy to install?
and I am thinking of getting HD enclosure for my 750HD, what are good enclosures out there?
    Maybe thunderbolt or usb3.0 ?
    Thanks a lot !

I'd still go ahead and recommend the Crucial M4, this SSD is cheaper and offers good performance.
Have a look at the link I've included and you'll see the performance of the Crucial is pretty good compared to the other SSDs out there.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4224584?start=0&tstart=0
You'll see that we did a speed test between the Crucial M4 and Kingston HyperX, although the KIngston HyperX is faster - the Crucial was faster in some areas.  For the price difference however, the Crucial M4 wins.
Good luck and hopefully this gives you an idea on which SSD to purchase.

  • ExpressCard SSD options

Anyone using / find a good solid state disk option that for the MBP ExpressCard slot? I do a lot of virtualization work and would love to not be tied to my external FireWire drive all the time.

I've checked this out as well. I installed a VMWare Fusion VM on an express card SSD and wow, was it slow. For writes anyway. Not usable for everyday work.
BUT I wonder if it would be at least slightly useful for loading Applications. I mean, copy /Applications to the SSD... trying that now, actually.
It might not help tremendously, but I am curious. Anyone tried this on Lexar, Transcend or the like ?

  • ExpressCard SSD options to boot a Powerbook (Leopard)

    Hi all,
Not sure if this is the correct forum/category for this but...
Anyone know of any particular type and/or brand of ExpressCard SSD from which it is possible to boot a G4 PowerBook running Leopard?
I have a very individual and specific reason for doing this and just hope that it's possible!
Looking to learn from others' experiences before I blow the cash only to find out that I've bought the wrong item or, worst still, it can't be done.
    Thanks!

Snow Leopard comes in discs only.  The USB drive may be a counterfeit and/or corrupt.  There are two options for you:
Get replacement original OSX installation disks from Apple customer service.  Have your MBP serial number ready and there is a charge.
Or two, purchase a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple online store:
