OS 10.6.8 Internet recover (command + R at startup)

Everywhere I look I find that OS 10.6.8 CANNOT enter Internet Recovery mode, but I held down command + R at startup and was able to enter it.  Everything looks like Lion (which I don't own), and I am asked if I want to reinstall Lion.  What is going on here and why am I able to do this?
I entered this mode in order to copy my boot disk to a new SSD I bought using Disk Utility's 'Restore' function.  Is it a bad idea to do this with OS 10.6.8?
Thanks!

There is no Internet Recovery with Snow Leopard. That was not introduced until Lion. To clone your boot disk to the SSD:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
       it to the Destination entry field.
  5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new SSD. Source means the original boot drive.

  • RMAN-03002: failure of recover command

    Hi all,
    I am testing a new backup and restore mechanism of a 11.2 system in Linux. A third mirror of the disks from the database server has been split and mounted in a media server. An RMAN backup was taken then, on tape, using HP Data Protector. Then, in the media server again, I mounted all the disk groups and removed all the files from ASM via asmcmd. With everything cleared, I proceeded in doing the following:
    1. Started up nomount using an old PFILE.
    2. Initiated an RMAN session and SET DBID, connected to the target and the catalog. Restore the SPFILE in a PFILE.
    3. Shutdow and started up nomount with PFILE the newly created file (edited it first to comment out CLUSTER_DATABASE parameter, as the media server is not configured for this).
    4. Restored the contorl file. This was done successfully.
    5. Restored the database. This was done successfully.
    6. Mounted the database and attempted to recover it. I received the following error:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of recover command at 07/12/2013 09:42:24
    RMAN-06094: datafile 1 must be restored
    7. I attempted a recover from SQL*Plus; the error message was a little more helpful:
    SQL> recover database using backup controlfile;
    ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors
    ORA-01110: data file 1: '+BT1_A_SYSTEM/bt1_a/datafile/system.259.813148661'
    ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 1 - see DBWR trace file
    ORA-01110: data file 1: '+BT1_A_SYSTEM/bt1_a/datafile/system.259.813148661'
    8. I checked my source database and the file name is as it appears above. But in the restored system, the file has a different name:
    ASMCMD> pwd
    +BT1_A_SYSTEM/BT1_A/DATAFILE
    ASMCMD> ls -l SYSTEM*
    Type      Redund  Striped  Time             Sys  Name
    DATAFILE  UNPROT  COARSE   JUL 11 16:00:00  Y    SYSTEM.257.820514399
    9. OK. I presume that this happened because we are using OMF. But, I was expecting RMAN to specify the full file names and thus restore them with their original names. The problem is now that the control file has the original file names, which cannot be found in the media server, where the restore took place. I am wondering if I should MOUNT the database after the control file restore and before I start the database restore, so RMAN might have the opportunity of renaming the file names in the control file.
    Has anyone encountered this problem? I would appreciate some help.
    Regards,
    Takis.

    That is correct Hemant. I latter realised my mistake.
    When I mounted the database, the control file was opened. Then I repeated the restore. RMAN, this time was able to access the control file and rename dynamically the files, as they were restored and getting their new names.
    So, I think, the correct sequence of events may be:
    1, Check in ASM if the disk groups are mounted (lsdg). If not, mount the disk groups (alter diskgroup <dg_name> mount;).
    2. Startup nomount (if no PFILE available, create a simple one with only db_name in it).
    3. From RMAN, set DBID and then connect to target and catalog.
    4. restore spfile to pfile from autobackup
    5. restore control file(s) from autobackup
    6. alter database mount
    7. restore database
    8. restore archivelog all
    9. recover database
    10. alter database open resetlogs
    In my case, this worked, by enslarge. RMAN stopped when it run out of archived redo logs.
    I then attempted, via SQL*Plus:
    recover database using backup controlfile until cancel
    When prompted, I typed: CANCEL
    That was fine, but then, when I attempted:
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
    alter database open resetlogs
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-19809: limit exceeded for recovery files
    ORA-19804: cannot reclaim 525336576 bytes disk space from 2147483648 limit
    So, I needed to increase the parameter db_recovery_file_dest_size which I did (in the pfile; luckily I had available space in the disk group). I shut down and started up (mount). Then:
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
    alter database open resetlogs
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00392: log 24 of thread 2 is being cleared, operation not allowed
    ORA-00312: online log 24 thread 2: '+BT1_A_RECO'
    So:
    SQL> alter database clear unarchived logfile group 24;
    Database altered.
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
    Database altered.
    SQL> select * from dual;

    Happy days!

  • Hi I have a message saying a file on my accounts progaramme is damaged and cannot be opened. It says use the Recover command to recover file. How do I do this please.

    Hi I have a Macbook. Yesterday and quite often it freezes and runs really slow. But I was working on my accounts programme and it froze and now that file won't open. It says to do the recover command on the file, but not sure how to do it!
    Version is Yosemite 10.10.1 Macbook 13inch late 2009. my accounts programme is Instant Admin. Please help.

    Hi pennsmith67. You have the program Instant Admin and it wants you to do a recover. You would have to open the program or the installer to see how to do this. You might have to reinstall it. As far as Yosemite being slow, one thing you could do is add more ram. You can run as much as 8Gig's of ram with your Macbook. as to running slow read this. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19031

  • Not always connecting to internet on command but can always recieve emails

    I have a curve 8330 on the Altell/Verizon network and for some odd reason when I try to connect to the internet it won't always oblige, it will connect and work fine, then no more than 5 minutes later it won't connect for about another ten minutes, yet I'm always able to recieve emails, even when it won't connect to the internet. It's always 1X and not 1x, and I've tried all the simple fixes like a battery pull etc. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Since you are only getting 1X, I would suggest you contact VZW for support...something is not right. 1X means that everything is going through the voice network...which can include internet access, but it will be slow and flaky. EV will give you the power of the data network...but VZW needs to help you figure out why you are not getting that.

  • I can't copy and paste from the Internet (using commands or manually).

    I can cut and paste within word but just not from the Safari to word.  I have just recently purchased MacKeeper if that has anything to do with it?  HELP!!

    There are a range of different kinds of forms. For example, this site uses very simple controls that don't automatically convert Word's formatting to an online format. The site where you are trying to paste your resume probably works differently.
    What methods have you tried using to paste? Typically one of these will work:
    * Ctrl+v
    * right-click > Paste
    * Edit > Paste (from the menu)
    Some sites offer their own buttons to paste, but for security/privacy reasons, Firefox usually disables those.

  • Internet Connect Consistently Hangs On Startup

    Anytime the computer is shut down and has to be restarted, Internet Connect always hangs without fail. It appears to actually connect, but quickly thereafter, I get the prompt that tells me that it's unexpectedly quit. When I try again, I'm successful. All disconnects and connections thereafter work until I shut my computer down and have to restart.
    I've gone so far as to reinstall from the DVD, backing up, and selectively reinstalling third party apps, but the problem persists. Anyone else encountering this problem, which came bundled with my new 20" G5 iMac and Tiger?

    Hi, WildBill —
    I hope you'll forgive if it takes me a moment to get acquainted. It's been a long time since I used Internet Connect.
    How are you using it — Bluetooth, AirPort, PPoE, VPN, etc.? (I'm wondering whether something like a signal delay or connection problem may factor in to the behavior...)
    Have you tried logging in to a temporary, "test" user account (with administrative privileges) in an effort to determine whether the problem is restriced to your user account or system-wide? This and other general troubleshooting tactics are described in KnowledgeBase Article Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.
    When you say "I get the prompt that tells me that it's unexpectedly quit" —are we talking about the application actually "crashing" ?  If so, have you used Console to look in ~/Library/Logs/ for an Internet Connect.crash.log? This may help to identify the specific sequence that's causing the problem.
    Looking forward to hearing back from you.
    Hope this helps... and
    Good luck!
    Dean

  • "MerpAD RDC" file in Trash "Recovered Files" after every startup.

    Does anyone know what this "MerpAD RDC" file is? It shows up in the Recovered Files in my Trash every time I reboot / startup. It's not causing any trouble, just curious as to what it is.

    I have the same issue. I don't seem to see it everytime, but almost. I am going to try to keep better track of it. I have seen several different files show up here. Mostly this one.

  • Unix Command Disabled in Startup Items

    I have a MaXtor One Touch II. After installing the software, during the Restart, Mac advised me that the security settings for an unknown (to me) file needed to be fixed or disabled. I disabled it and have now realised it was a UNIX command to watch the One Touch button. I found the file using System Profiler and it lies domant in the Startup Items.
    How do I enable it again?

    I don't know what mechanism is used to disable the "StartupItem" in this situation, but I have read that one way is by creating an invisible ".disabled" file in the top level of a given startup item's folder. If this is the case here, there are a few ways to get rid of the item but since there aren't a lot of details in your post, I'll suggest a generic method. Try opening "/Applications" > "AppleScript" > "Script Editor.app", paste these lines, and click "Run":<pre>set theItem to (choose folder default location path to startup items)
    set ppath to quoted form of (POSIX path of theItem & ".disabled")
    do shell script "mv " & ppath & " ~/.Trash" with administrator privileges</pre>Choose the folder corresponding to the specific startup that is to be enabled, and provide the "admin" username and password at the prompt. If the "startup item" has been disabled by another method, the script won't find a ".disabled" file so it should just fail harmlessly.
    However, there have been issues with other third party startup items being improperly programmed so that they required incorrect permissions in order to function. If this is the case, the "security settings" dialogue may continue to appear, despite choosing the "fix" option. If that happens, check the Maxtor website for updated software.

  • No internet (wired) connectivity directly after startup

    Often after starting up my computer I have no functional internet connection. A restart is then required to get connected.
    As a result syncs normally done at startup (such as dropbox and an rsync script I run) fail.  Safari behaves as if there is a connection,
    but does not actually connect to any site.
    Note that this is NOT a WiFi problem, since I am connected to the router by ethernet cable (as well as WiFi, usually).
    I have never seen this before on Mavericks.
    I have started noticing this after upgrading to Yosemite, on several occasions and on several computers, including a late 2013 iMac and an early 2008 iMac.
    After a restart the problem is always gone. I have never seen it happen on the second start.

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for your reply.
    Tonight the problem has turned from a minor nuisance into a major disaster, so I hope you -- or some else -- can help.
    When I turned on my new, 2013, iMac this evening I had once again no internet, as stated in my post. I checked that the status lights in System preferences, Network was green. But there was no connection to anything. I restarted. Still no internet. I turned WiFi on. It connected (WiFI signal in status bar was black, with four bars showing). Now both status lights in System preferences (Ethernet AND WiFi) were green. But still no connections to anything. Then I decided to restart my router, and then the iMac, but this did not help.
    I checked that my iPad connected to the internet, and it did, before and after the router restart. I tried two more restarts, but unlike what happened in previous occasions this did not help either. Then I decided to try my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009), via WiFi, and it connected without any problem. Then I tried to restart my iMac from a clone I made a few months ago. This worked, and I was connected to the internet. Then I restarted my iMac from its internal disk again. Now, finally, I had internet.
    But then I noticed something really weird, which might be a clue. I clicked the two links in your mail. They opened in Safari. The pages load extremely rapidly, but turned out to be completely empty. This is not the first time I have noticed such behavior with Apple Support pages. Previously, I believed that there was something wrong with those pages. But now I tried to look at those pages on my laptop (also running Yosemite 10.10.1) in Safari, and they load at normal speed, and are visible. Then I tried looking at them on my iMac using google Chrome, and once again they are visible.
    Unfortunately those pages do not address my problem, but I understand these are the first things to check, and I appreciate your help.
    I will report here how this story continues, because clearly it is not finished.

  • Run a sudo command on system startup via Applescript?

    Hey, I'm trying to hide the Spotlight icon on my menu bar using the sudo command shown here:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/12/hide-spotlight-menu-icon-mac-os-x-lion/
    It works fine, but when I reboot my Mac (I tend to turn it off at night since it has a habit of waking from sleep by itself) the icon has re-appeared, and I need to run the command again.
    I'd ideally like to write an Applescript to run on launch to execute the two commands (which also requires entering my password), but I've not been successful, I get various errors talking about authentication and such.
    Is there an easier way to get this icon permanently hidden? I use Alfred, so while I make use of the Spotlight index, I never touch the magnifying glass icon, and I like to keep a clean menu bar!

    You don't need applescript. What you need to create is a LaunchAgent. Lingon (available through the App Store) can help you write it. But, there are other sources that can show you how to write the raw file and put it in the LaunchAgents folder, like here: http://www.devdaily.com/mac-os-x/launchd-examples-launchd-plist-file-examples-ma c

    I never zap the NVRAM/PRAM as a first resort. First I ask myself if the problem I am experiencing might have anything to do with the parameters stored in NVRAM. If not, I don't bother zapping it.
    For instance, if an application is crashing, there is a slim chance that would be affected by anything in parameter RAM. I'll look for corrupted preferences or odd file/folder permissions/ACLs first.
    But if I am having trouble getting a display or startup disk to be recognized, resetting NVRAM would be higher on the list of things to try because those can be affected by the NVRAM settings.
