OS 6.0.0.668 instability ?

Hi, I am confronted to an instability to the 6.0.0.668 operating system. Indeed, the touch pad evolves all only by activating options even if I dont do anything. In this case, the browsing becomes then impossible for a few minutes. Could you help me ? I dont see any fix for my problem.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
There may be an updated OS for your model. At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for each model. Please use those as reference as you proceed.
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Official PlayBook OS v2.0.1.668 Announcement and Breathing Life back into a Dead Battery

    Where is it?!
Well, you can go to the software update page and discover that the only thing RIM indicates the update does is provide a security update for the Adobe Flash player,
    http://ca.blackberry.com/support/tablets/playbook/software-updates.html
The details can be found here.
    http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/viewdocument.do?externalId=KB31675&sliceId=1&cmd=displayKC&d...
That said, it would appear speculation related to wifi and browser improvements (among other things) is very subjective and likely as varied as individual user experience. Here’s a quote from a Crackberry News & Rumours Post
    http://crackberry.com/whats-new-playbook-os-201668
Frankly, this sort of commentary drives me crazy. What company would make the kind of improvements identified above without documenting them for their existing and future customers, if they were real. Is it that we're all so desperate for good news from RIM that we have to make it up? If anyone can find anything official behind the article's claims, feel free to post a link in response.
A couple things do still confuse me though. Some users are claiming that the new OS v2.0.1.668 version has been pulled. My Playbook upgraded to this update without any issue on the first try. Didn't take hours and the whole process seemed quite normal. Smooth as molasses.
Didn't notice anything weird at all until last evening, a few days after the upgrade. I pulled off the charger cable and looked at the battery and it was 0%, dead as a door nail. Perhaps the magnetic head of the fast charger wasn't seated properly. I turned off the Playbook and then attached the fast charger. Left it alone and went back about an hour later and it was still at 0%! It was acting like it was still losing charge and getting weaker. This is not typically the case, so I shut down wifi, turned off backlighting, put it into airplane mode and tried again. No change when I checked back later. At some points, I couldn't even get it to boot to the main screen, just battery empty symbol, at best.
I read on this and other forums how others were having problems after teh update. Erasing their Playbook and reloading OS. I couldn't even do that, because the Playbook has to have enough power to update the software through the Desktop. While I could connect and see the device via Desktop, there wasn't enough juice to do anything at 0%. It seemed that there were folks holding the battery button for 10-20 seconds claiming that worked, but it didn't do anything for me.
To say the least, I was getting pretty ticked off after reading the forum and discovering that the battery issue I was dealing with might be related to a pulled OS upgrade that had screwed my Playbook. Proper QA and testing should preventthis sort of blunder. Even more ticked, if the update has been pulled and RIM has not made any official statement that I can find to that effect! If they have pulled it (which I still haven't been able to personally confirm), this information should be publically available and explained. The one thing they need to do is look after any loyal customers they still have left. Personally, I have loved my playbook, although RIM has definitely botched a great piece of hardware with inadequate software enhancements to the OS, that continues to this day. The fact that we still can't categorize browser favorites in folders at this point is inexcusable. Anyway, I digress.
Back to the battery. Here's what I did after about two hours of snarling and becoming increasingly frustrated with my dead playbook and not being able to find any way to breathe life back into it. I remembered what happens to my rechargeable batteries for my xbox controllers when they drain dead. They simply won't charge. They become un-rechargeable. I eventually figured out via an obscure internet posting, what no retail clerk or xbox support person seemed to know. I returned more than my share of brand new unrechargeable batteries, because they wouldn't charge when drained. This is what I discovered. You take the dead controller with battery and connect it to the charging cable. It lights red... but after 13 seconds it goes green. If you leave it connected it simply will not charge. Originally, I concluded I had a faulty battery that would not recharge. Not so. You must pull the cable off. Light goes out, connect it again. Light goes red, 13 seconds turns green. Pull the cable off. Light goes out, connect it again. Light goes red, 13 seconds turns green. Pull the cable off. Light goes out, connect it again. Light goes red, 13 seconds turns green. Pull the cable off. Repeat until you figure there is no point to this exercise, and then do it one more time. Pull the cable off. Light goes out, connect it again. Light goes red, 13 seconds later it stays red and doesn't go green, it stays red. Might be the 5th try, 20th try, 30th try, who knows, but eventually the xbox controller light will actually stay red and not switch to green and will then recharge. It's almost like each previous failed connection provides a bit more juice to the battery, until it has enough to finally be rechargeable again. Come back in a couple hours and what appeared to be an unrechargeable battery is fully charged.
So I took my Playbook, Turned it off. Connected cable. Light turned red, then turned green. Disconnected cable. Held power button to shut playbook off. Connected cable. Light turned red, then turned green. Disconnected cable. Held power button to shut playbook off. Connected cable. Light turned red, then turned green. Disconnected cable.  Held power button to shut playbook off. Connected cable. Light turned red, then turned green. Disconnected cable. Held power button to shut playbook off. Not sure how many times I went through this painful exercise. Maybe 15-20. Maybe I only needed to do it 5 or 10times. Maybe I didn't need to do it at all.
Frankly, in the course of doing it, it seemed like I was almost draining the battery more. I think there was a point where it almost was dead and wouldn't even light up. That had me spooked. By pressing and holding the on button and connecting the cable, I somehow got the red light to come on, then switch to green and it began pulsating. At this point, I didn't want to push my luck. Left it alone and went to bed. Got up this morning and it was alive and 100% charged. It went into an automatic reboot. The wifi password had to be re-entered and saved in order to get connected back to the internet, but everything else seemed to be fine.
I’ve used it solid for one hour and the battery dropped to 80%. This felt like a much faster drop than in the past. It's been in standby mode for an additional two and a half hours since and it is now at 60%. I never shut my PlayBook off. I keep mine in standby all day, with the screen on lowest brightness and wifi typically on. Do I think that the latest update has had an impact on battery life? Well, my Playbook originally died and ran out of charge, when I had it attached to the fast charger! Can't explain that right now. I suppose I could have improperly connected via the magnet and this was my own user error. Could be just coincidental that this happened to me after the update and at the same time others are complaining about battery issues. Personally, it does “feel” like my Playbook is draining faster in standby mode than it has in the past. I have my eye on this and if it goes dead again, I'll repost. Obviously, my recharging "technique" worked for me, so if it helps breathe life back into your battery dead playbook, I'd be interested to know.
If RIM has actually pulled the update and not updated their own web site to reflect a battery issue and not officially disclosed a known problem to their customers it would be at best totally unprofessional and at worst inexcusable. I'm still not sure what to make of everyone's comments and issues, when RIM still lists the v2.0.1.668 update on their corporate page.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

RIM exec Michael Clewley confirm that 668 was pulled because it has upgrading issues with Playbook with OS 1.0.7 --- and that is the ONLY reason why it was pulled.

  • Z77A-G45 System Instability

Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 (BIOS Version E7752IMS V2.4 - I did not update the BIOS, it shipped this way)
CPU: Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge
    PSU: CORSAIR HX850 850W
    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL
Case: Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
HDD: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX  (SATA Port 2)
Optical: ASUS 24X DVD Burner DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS  (SATA Port 3)
    GPU: EVGA 012-P3-1570-AR GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Main Problem: System Instability.  I've managed to get the OS installed, and was able to eventually get VirusScan, Windows Updates, Chipset drivers, and other drivers installed.  However, this was a painful process, with several BSOD's, program crashes, and other lock-ups.  After doing so, the system is still unstable.
I also have an SSD I intend to use for acceleration via Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST).  I plan to eventually plug this into SATA Port 1.  But I didn't get that far...
I am not OC'ing - using Standard Mode.  The only change I made in the BIOS was to switch the SATA Mode to "RAID Mode".  I did this prior to OS installation, per instructions.  And during OS install, I loaded the Intel SATA controller, per instructions.
OS install was unusually rocky.  First attempt failed.  Second attempt worked, but took longer than it should have.  After installation... crashing, instability, and BSODs.
Checked Memory a couple times, via Microsoft's memory checking tools.  Also reseated all DIMMs, to no avail.
After some amount of troubleshooting, I saw that my memory was being reported as: F3-12800CL9-4GBXL DIMMs.  I assume this is correct, and that the "Model" I bought (F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL) just describes the whole package of 4 DIMMs.  However, the one thing that is incorrect is that the timing is reported in the BIOS as 11-11-11-28.  The timing specs on my RAM are 9-9-9-24.  Overriding this in the BIOS to those numbers (for TCL, tRCD, tRP, tRAS) did not make any difference.  Instability continued.  The memory speed and voltage seems to have been set properly to 1600/1.5V.
The other thing to note here is that I just bought the MSI Z77A-G45 to replace an ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3, which was experiencing the same (but less frequent) instability.  I've been using it for a couple months, and decided to try my luck with a different motherboard.  Only this one is worse.  The only components that were reused were the CPU and RAM (and optical drive, PSU, and Case, if that matters), and the only other thing in common was that I had both set up in RAID Mode.
Thoughts on how I should proceed?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Todd

Regarding the memory speed, I'm confused.  The maufacturer site (gskill.com/products.php?index=349) says:
    CAS Latency   9-9-9-24-2N
    Speed   DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800)
Also just to confirm, to change the timing, I assume I change this in the BIOS, under DRAM Timing Mode, switch to "Link" (from "Auto"), correct?  And when I do this, it enables the "Advanced DRAM Configuration" section.  If I double-click that, I can specify 9-9-9-24 (for tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS).  Former values were 11-11-11-28.  I assume I leave all other fields at "Auto"?  What is the "-2N" in the CAS Latency description on the GSkill site?
    Here is the reason:
    They are real DDR3-1600, but that means CAS = 11 @ 1.5V
Their XMP profile is buggy (in fact that's the DDR3-1333 profile).
    For 1600MHz with CAS = 9, they need 1.60-1.65V

  • Msi ge620 instability/won't turn on

    Hello,
here's my story and i hope someone can help me out!! because ITS VERY COMPLICATED! and i cannot diagnose the main issue!!!!!
i have been having an issue with my msi ge620 for almost 3 months now, at first i thought it was a heat problem ,and then i started to believe its an electrical issue .and now i think its the motherboard dead or dying .. but sometimes my notebooks turns on and can work normal and get into games but might turn off after 10 min or 1 hour gameplay despite that the heat doesnot pass 85C , but usually in winter is less than that
my current warranty is invalid and 2 years already passed this summer, because i bought this notebook from kuwait , and i am currently in egypt, i couldnot send it back to msi for maintenance via shipment in order to check the issue,
because firstly i dont know how exactly to send it back there or to europe etc..
and secondly cairo is not a safe place to do so..or to search etc and to ask around despite that i asked most technician or electronic shops and i am not certain if there is msi in egypt !? ,, and i dont want to handle my laptop to a technician here because i had alot of problems with them and especially stolen hardware or replacement of hardwares without notifying me .. and especially with gaming consoles..
and thirdly i couldnt travel back earlier this year because of university etc,, anyways it doesnt matter because i already opened the notebook so i thought of seeking help here from experienced people.
this whole issue started when i was playing guildwars 2 suddenly during the game my pc shuts down, so i realized it was a heat problem and then
i did some googling early that month and believed it was really a heat problem especially that i could see dust inside the fan and couldnt reach it with my electronic vacuum and was worried about the warranty if i opened it but latter that month i realized i couldnt send it back or travel etc.. so i have opened it and  started cleaning it and of course it was full of dust, and i did it by carefully watching videos and reading guides etc,,, and i am certain i did it correctly it worked perfectly afterwards with no issue at all FOR ANOTHER MONTH~! and also to note that i used to open my old desktop and replace parts or cleaning it but never did it before with laptops
and that made me realize it was a heat problem
and then later that month the issue reappeared so i went to clean it back again and it worked fine but afterwards it reappeared AGAIN and started to shut down! but this time when i opened it , it had no dust at all! so i gave it a rest, and i realized my pc was shutting down only after 6-8 hours of gameplay! and i have to mention its hot here , but i usually play with my home fan on or with my air conditioner on to cool the room
so i started giving it rest each 2 hours, and then one day it stopped responding and it wont turn on and i knew this would happen sooner or later..., so i didnt use it for a while maybe 3 days or so ,
and the next day it started again after holding shut down button for 30 second!!! i was really starting to get angry, so i did google search and i found that some guy had the same issue as me and when he replaced his electrical cable cord it worked normal, so i started to check how i can order from outside for replacement particularly from usa.. and i found a company called avadvancemax and rakkuten and also amazon that has a replacement for my discontinued msi product but the problem it kinda takes over a 1 month for the order to appear in egypt and i am certain that it will take longer with whats happening in the streets, so for the last two weeks it appeared that i cannot order from outside for certain issues , so i started to try to repair it until i can place my order for replacement,
this is what i have tried so far and it kinda worked out well but for a while only
hold power button for 30 seconds. and this brought my notebook back to life
remove power plug for 1minute  then try again
remove li-on battery for 1 minute then put it back in
start the notebook by battery and then put the plug in and it worked
play with battery only or use laptop with battery only and recharge with cable cord
and this made me believe it was electrical problem , especially that my plug looks like one from UK  which is usually used in kuwait and i convert it to european standard plug which is used in egypt
BUT! it only works for my notebook if i want to use the internet or watch videos etc,,, IF i decided to play a game such as the last remnant it shuts down, but if i play a very old game like final fantasy vii it works without shutting down .
and yesterday i played the game such as last remnant for almost 45 minute to 1 and half hour in very high graphics despite that its 2009 game and then it shuts down ,
i also bought a cooling pad just recently and started using it whenver i used the notebook , and notebook fan inside is working perfectly
and i also thought of replacing thermal paste but i am not sure if that will help since it wont turn on , and i am not sure if formating the pc would help, since it usually starts and shuts down on windows logo but now it wont turn on at all
and what made me post this today after all this experimenting and instability etc.... ,
    is because;
today i tried to start my notebook from the battery and it wont start all and neither from the main cord plug
and when it starts its shuts down very quickly less than seconds,, it used to happen before but usually it would start if i used the battery only!
and now when my battery is plugged in , and the cablecord is also plugged it , it seems that the battery is charging ...
i am really sorry for the long post but anyways as you can see its really weird and complicated issues, and i never overclocked it but i usually play in high graphics etc.. and maybe it consumed too much power from nvidia perhaps ? i usually use it for maximum graphics and sometimes i use it for high performance only
i cant specify my notebook nor  i can get dxdiag because my pc wont turn on but this is my notebook copied  from  msi website

    *** note:
the same issue happened to my xbox 360 and it completed wont turn on and the issue by then was the cable cord , and then it worked out well after i replaced it and afterward my xbox 360 died... despite the new cable cord
and another note is that here in egypt and especially before the military coup that happened, usually the electricity here turns off suddenly and it really made me worried that it caused both my pc and xbox to fuse .. because they both faced the same issue..
and i never had this kind of issue in my 10 years old desktop in kuwait which is really making me believe its electricity issue
    or maybe motherboard died..
    and thank you in advance!

you mean its doing at his own 30 seconds On, then shutdown for 30 seconds and repeatable in that way?
that hapends if you use battery only?
or its doing the same if you leave ac charger only?

  • In and out of sleep (no reboots) for over a week:  instability, failures

My wife rarely reboots her MacBook. She'll literally go a month without rebooting it. She just puts it to sleep when she's done and wakes it up again when she needs it. Only for the occasional software update will she begrudgingly and belatedly reboot the thing.
The same isn't true for my MacBook Pro. It takes about a week (or two at the outside) from the time I reboot my MBP until the time it manifests some kind of instability or soft hardware failure. Sometimes, apps crash, or I'll get a kernel panic (the gray screen that asks you, in multiple languages, to reboot). The last time, the computer wouldn't go to sleep when I closed it, and bluetooth became "unavailable". The time before that, the core keyboard and trackpad stopped working, so I had to use a USB mouse to cleanly shut everything down. A reboot always completely clears everything up.
I called AppleCare about this. They told me to run the hardware tests that come on the MacOS install disc. It ran for over 24 hours and could find no problems. Without some kind of diagnosis, they can't help me.
Both the MacBook and the MBP have had their memory upgraded. The MacBook now has one of the Apple (Samsung) 1GB sticks that had been in the MBP, along with another 1GB stick from Crucial. The MBP has one of the original 1GB sticks that came with the MBP, along with a 2GB stick from Crucial. My understanding is that in sleep mode, the memory is in a low power auto-refresh state (I get the impression that some of the peripherals are also not entirely switched off either). It seems to me that perhaps one of the memory sticks is bad. In fact, the 2GB one from Crucial I have is actually a replacement for the one I originally bought from them. Could I get two bad ones in a row? Is Crucial having quality problems?
I've decided I'm going to try each memory stick in isolation for two weeks with no reboots to see if I can tell which one is the culprit. (It's not going to be fun running with only the 1GB stick.)
There's one other thing to mention. These instability problems didn't always happen. They just started happening one day with two kernel panics in a row. Prior to that, I had been running some neural nets experiments, where I was running SSE-heavy code on both processors at full tilt for two weeks straight. I was concerned about the CPU temperature getting awfully high, so I installed a fan control tool to set the RPM to max, and I directed external fans at the computer. The problems started happening just after that. I'm concerned that some component(s) may have been damaged due to sustained excessive heat.
Can anyone give me any tips on resolving what's going on here?

Have you considered the possibility that the third party fan software might itself be implicated in the issue, theosib (or perhaps something else introduced at about that time?).
My inclination in a situation like this would be to back up your drive to an external, wipe the drive, and do a clean installation. At the very least I'd try an archive and install.
Do you have plenty of free space on the drive? Once you get things down below the last 10 to 20% things can get hairy at times, and may not be fixed as a result of simply freeing up some room, as free space fragmentation is likely to have set in.
As far as RAM goes, either "Rember" - http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember/ or, better still, but less user friendly, "memtest" - http://www.memtestosx.org/ does a much better job of checking your RAM than the AHT. Still takes a while to run for a thorough test, but much quicker than the approach you are planning on using.
You might also want to use "Activity Monitor" to check for any applications with progressive "memory leaks" or that are acting as CPU hogs, given your symptoms
    Cheers

  • Safari 5.1.7 instability in Snow Leopard

I use Chrome, Firefox, and Safari depending on what project I am working on. The recent update to Safari 5.1.7 using Snow Leopard has only resulted in instability and constant crashing. Has anyone figured out why and how to stop it?

Glad it's not crashing but it happens again ..
cuz I didn't see a Go button anywhere and I searched but couldn't find webpageicons.db
    It's not a button.
Click the Finder icon in your Dock. That will open the Finder for you. (Should be all the way to the left).
Now look at the top of your screen in the menu bar. Click Go then from the drop down menu click Go to Folder
    Type this:    ~/Library/Safari
Then click Go and move the WebpageIcons.db file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
Crashed Thread:  2  WebCore: IconDatabase  < from your crash report. So that means the WebpageIcons.db is corrupted. When you delete that file and re launch Safari your Mac will generate a new WebpageIconsdb file for you.

  • Sound Blaster Instability - Are you affected? (Stability Test for "Squealing", et

I've created a test that works on my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS with my particular hardware configuration as a proof of concept of the instability ( "high-pitched squealing" ) issues I have. (I have an ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard.) I am seeking to find out if it "works" for other people with squealing issues (i.e. triggers them).
Do our problems really have common symptoms, or a common source? I hope we can find that out, and ideally this would be a step toward that.
I believe it would be helpful for people who have problems with their cards to post some system information, along with descriptions of what the problems are.
Some useful system information to post would be . Motherboard, 2. CPU, 3. Video Card, 4. Sound Card, 5. Operating System, 6. Sound Driver and version, 7. Power Supply.
.. and then whether you have problems with Snap-Crackle-Pop (SCP), High-Pitched Squealing (HPS), BSODs, or other errors.
    For example, here's my information:
    . ASUS P5N-E SLI
    2. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    3. ATI X800XT
    4. Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
    5. Windows XP Pro SP2
    6. Creative drivers, 5.2.4.96 (SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_006)
    7. Cooler Master iGreen Power 600W
I experience HPS and BSODs. Typical times for the sound test to fail for me are between 5 seconds and 2 minutes.
Some information is better than none. It's not necessary to give complete system information if you don't know it all. But the most important information would be what motherboard you have, what sound card you have, what problems you experience (if any) and whether or not the test results in instability for you.
IMPORTANT: It's important to note that you are running this test AT YOUR OWN RISK, and while the files included don't inherently cause harm, it is possible for data corruption to occur if your system is affected by this issue.
These key files are needed in order to perform the test: a MIDI and a high-definition audio file (in this case, a high-definition (24-bit/48kHz) WAVE of near-silence). These are included in the zip file I have linked to below. According to CreativeSkeptic, MIDI playback makes high utilization of the PCI bus, so this may be why the problem is caused so easily this way.
I would be interested in hearing your results if you have experienced the high-pitched squealing in games or even if you haven't.
You can hear an example of what may happen if you experience instability [url="http://www.supload.com/listen?s=Sxfea3MfL">here[/url].
    Sound Blaster Test.zip at Wikiupload.com
    Or.. Sound_blaster_test.Zip by Bigupload.Com
(Note: The zip file is around 50KB in size, but it expands to over 42MB. This is due to the high-definition nature of the 5-minute wave file necessary to induce this problem in affected systems.)
This test will measure the stability of your Sound Blaster in your
particular system configuration. It is tested with Windows XP and
Windows Media Player , though these *may* not be essential for the
    functioning of the test.
    WARNING:
CLOSE ALL RUNNING PROGRAMS TO AVOID DATA LOSS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
    Instructions:
. Open silence.wav in Windows Media Player. To do so, you can drag it
onto the Windows Media Player shortcut in this folder.
    2. Then, open the Play Midi shortcut.
    Note:
This test will ONLY work if your system is using standard or full
hardware sound acceleration. In addition, your system must be using
your Sound Blaster as its MIDI interface directly. Software synthesizers
    will not trigger the problem.
You can tell if your system has become unstable based on the
corrupted nature of the instruments played by the MIDI. It will
begin to sound odd and unnatural, with random notes inserted
here and there. It will be clear to you that this has happened.
For me, it doesn't take more than a few minutes before the instability
    appears.
If this is the case, it is recommended that you do one of two things:
    - Press the RESET button on your computer.
    - Pull the power plug, if you have no reset button.
This is to avoid data loss associated with a blue screen of death
that would normally occur if you did not take these measures to
    prevent it.
If you do experience these stability issues, you are at risk of BSOD's
when gaming or other playback problems. Please report this in the forum.
To hear a sample case of instability, visit the following URL:

My X-Fi XtremeGamer passes this "test". No BSODs, etc. But I've discovered my computer has problems beyond sound card issues (I didn't even notice them until recently).
In other words, I've seen firsthand (whether this is true for the majority or not) that my issues with the Audigy 2 ZS don't translate exactly over to the X-Fi XtremeGamer, so if you have an X-Fi don't expect problems with this test, but by all means try if you want to see for sure.
(One problem remains from the Audigy 2 ZS, however: randomly skipping ahead in videos or certain audio streams. It doesn't happen with onboard audio, but my tendency is still to call this a system problem unrelated to the sound card because it doesn't happen on my old PC.)
(Oh, and I know I'm replying to my own post, so don't think I'm nuts. I just thought it would be appropriate to report my experience with my new card in another post.)Message Edited by sireebob on 03-27-20072:24 PM

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • Snow Leopard Instability - Possibly To Do With WD and Lacie FW Drives

I have an early 2009 2,66gHz Mac Pro. 7GB Ram.
At some point it got incredibly unstable running 10.6.4 (and earlier SL versions).
I've tried running it with stock RAM. Same issue. Tried clean re-installing. Same issue.
I post this here because I have the exact same system running on an iMac (cloned) - and it works fine with all my firewire drives so this must only affect certain (older?) machines.
I have read a lot of the "general instability" threads concerning SL and they seem all to have issues as diverse as mine; basically this is what happens for me:
I boot the machine and it works fine until a certain *key event* makes everything wonky. At this point, all these seemingly random issues pop up.
Such as, but not limited to:
The finder will crash and then give that darned "could not be relaunched -10601" error.
Most things to do with saving/exporting will fail and crash the corresponding app.
    Toast will not launch.
AFP Server becomes unresponsive, as does screen sharing.
    Opera will crash.
Disk Utility will crash on launch.
iTunes will crash, then fail to relaunch "checking library" then beachball.
I have tried to identify this *key event* because it might help the apple engineers get this fixed.
It seems sometimes to be something to do with Quicktime-based operations. Clicking around in Disk utility is also a good way of making it hang. It never happens spontaneously without user input. There is always something I click, that starts the whole thing off, although the trigger is generally very diverse. A friend of mine has the same issue, and he says he can always trigger it by re-scanning AU units (?) in Logic.
Once you have reached "Firewire ****" the machine needs to be hard-reset. A reboot gets as far as the blue screen with the spinning wheel. I don't know if it goes on spinning forever because I don't have forever to wait, but it does not reboot within 20min. If there are no firewire drives attached, none of this ever happens. I have a 2TB DualDrive FW800 WD and a 2TB Lacie which is also FW800.
Now I'm trying to identify which one of the two FW drives is responsible, and I will post back with results. I shall also try FW400. They are both brand new drives by the way.
I swear this is going to make a little vein in my frontal lobe go pop pretty soon.

  • Continuous Kernel Panic and heavy instability for my iMac Mac OSX 10.6.8

Two or three days after the second upgrade to Mac OSX 10.6.8 my iMac started with instability.
Hour after hour the system stability degenerate affecting all the applications, the Finder and at the end with all the user's accounts of my family.
The problem started with Mozilla that was unable to launch flash player on youtube asking for an update, I switched to Safari, but after a first video without problem I obtained the same result (the plugin stopped to work). Then Firefox and Safari did become unstable and crashed all the time also looking to other website. Nor other application was affected at that moment.
I downloaded and installed Google Chrome. After few minutes of normal behaviour the same thing happened to Chrome. It doesn't crash but it is impossible to see any single web page (session crash).
In few minutes any single application started to become unstable, crashing all the time.
Finally a grey shutter appears on the screen with written in different languages something like: you have to reboot manually your system maintaining the power button for a while.
It seems as a strong Virus (on a mac? it is possible? and no one report this in internet?).
Hour after hour the situation becomes unmanageable. Finder crashes, Dock crashes if only I try to ope application folder and restart, antivirus are stopped or crashes when I try to make a full scan of the disc. When some application attempt to use the network it crashes.
I did try to use Time Machine to restore the system at the date 25/7, when all worked fine for sure. Nothing. Time Machine crashes as soon as I try to restore the system at the date.
At the end I - desperate - took the original DVD of my iMac and make several attempts to reinstall all tfrom scratch.
Nothing to do. A strange message appears: "The Mac OS X Installation couldn't be completed" and an error log appears.
Let me summarize the message in the log (what I think is relevant):
    Process:      LCA
    Path:           /System/Installation/CDIS/LCA.app/Contents/MacOS/LCA
    COde Type: X86-64 (Native)
    Application Specific Information:
*** error for object =0x....: incorrect checksum for fread object - object was probably modified after being fread.
    Thread 0 crashed:
< follows threads items reverse history >
It seems to me that this means there is a strong Virus affecting my Mac. But please correct me if I'm wrong.
What appear strange to me is the fact that the OS X installation program cannot proceed. How it is possible if the source code is read from a DVD?
If a virus affect my iMac it should be activated by normal bootstrap of the system, not with a boot from CD.
Please help me. Now I finished ideas.

I suggest you might try some maintenance on the system:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Delete caches to resolve some startup problems:
Boot into single-user mode.  After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it.  At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN after each commandline:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK."  If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*
    rm -rf /Library/Caches/*
    reboot
I suggest you print out the above to be sure you do not make any errors when entering the commands.  When in single-user mode you have 'root' access, so it's important that you not make any mistakes.

  • IPad Instability when connected to MacBook

Whenever I connect to my MacBook Pro using O/S 10.6, the iPad goes beserk. Apps open and close randomly, Contacts pages open and turn, the Calendar opens and changes dates chaotically etc. Any insights? I have restored the iPad twice.

    Hi,
If you are running v10.6.2 (your profile) click your Apple menu / Software Update...
Restart your Mac after the updates are installed, then restart your iPad. Hopefully that will take care of the instability.
Most recent Snow Leopard version is v10.6.4

  • System instability using reports that raise an exceptions

I am having a problem with some reports when I use the type "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query".
If the Function raise an exception, the apex's engine will call again the function and it raise again the exception. These will make a loop that doesn't end until you close the session. The problem is that this page consume all the recourse of the CPU and/or fill the partition where the logs are saved. All these generate Instability on the server and also could bring down the server.
To reproduce this error you have to follow this steps:
    1)     First create a simple function to return a raise.
    FUNCTION DORTEGA_TEST_RAISE RETURN VARCHAR2 IS
    BEGIN
    DECLARE
    A NUMBER;
    BEGIN
A := 12/0; --This operation generate an exception.
    END;
    RETURN 'SELECT 1 FROM DUAL';
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    RAISE;
    END;
    2)     Create a empty page with one report region.
    3)     Edit the report region and set these values:
    a.     Type = SQL Query (PL/SQL function body returning SQL query)
    b.     Display Point = Page Template Region Position 2
    c.     Source = BEGIN RETURN DORTEGA_TEST_RAISE; END;
Use Generic Column Names (parse query at runtime only)
    4) When we run the application the page never load, and if you look the data base, you can view that the session it’s growing and it’s begins to consume all the memory and the processor of the server.
I am using APEX 3.1.0.00.32. And the DB is 11g.
Someone know why is this happening? Are there any fix for this bug?

    Hi:
I was able to reproduce this in APEX 3.1.2 installed in an Oracle XE instance.
The APEX engine does seem to go into an endless loop and the server Oracle process handling this request eventually does with an out-of-memory error.
However, if instead of raising an exception in the exception handler of the function I have a statement like 'Return Null;' then the APEX engine comes back with an expected response of
    failed to parse SQL query:
    ORA-00900: invalid SQL statement

  • CS3 debugging causes instability

    I am a relatively new Flash CS3 user (3 months). I am
maintaining a large code base of ActionScript 2.0, and I am having
difficulties with instability which may be caused by debugging.
Debugging appears to cause some kind of instability in the
Flash compiler. It is very hard to characterize the actual
scenario, but I feel I cannot trust the swfs that I produce to be
the _real_ result of the code I am compiling, without testing them,
which is tricky because they run as clients to a server and are not
easily switched to local xml file input testing. I am debugging
inside the IDE and doing remote debugging as well.
I have found that exiting CS3,then deleting the aso folder in
    here, helps: C:\Documents and Settings\<your.login>\Local
    Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash CS3\en\Configuration\Classes
Some of the time the IDE just crashes (or takes so long to do
something that it may as well have crashed), but largely I seem to
get a previous version of the swf, or some of the classes/files
don't get properly recompiled. The output file appears to be
new...it has a new timestamp, but it exhibits old behaviour.
I am not sure that anything can be done about this, or if
anyone has advice. I would welcome some sort of reassurance that I
am somehow operating the IDE incorrectly! I am an experienced
programmer in other fields and this has been a horrible experience
    - IMO CS3 is not a stable development platform and a poor tool.

All good now. I think it was that my pdb was still called getter.pdb not the name of my plugin.

  • Internet Connection Instability

Up until last week I had my home network configured in the way described below and it worked fine. Without any changes that I'm aware of, suddenly I'm having trouble staying connected to my ISP.
I have a dual band network:
A Time Capsule connected via ethernet to my ISP. I have it set to "create a wireless network" (n speed 5 GHz). I use DHCP and have it set to "share a public IP address". The network called "adibiase" is extended at the other end of the house by an Airport Extreme with "Fast Ethernet" (the original n speed airport).
Connected to the Airport Extreme/Fast Ethernet that extends the n network is an older domed Airport Extreme. I use it to broadcast a g speed network at that end of the house called "gdibiase". It's set to "participate in a WDS network" and has its connection sharing set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
I access the n network with a MacBook Pro. My wife accesses the g network with a iBook G4.
This all worked great until the n network started dropping its connection to my ISP. Sometimes I times I can switch over to the g network which at times gives me a pretty fast connection. In fact, at times I've been finding it more efficient to work on the g network....it's more reliable (doesn't drop out as much) and actually seems faster than the n network. But the real problem is a baseline instability in keeping the connection to my ISP. Very disruptive to doing any work online.
I'm sure my configurations are not the best. But for a few months they did seem to work flawlessly.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated,
    Allan

Update: I simply gave up on the dual band. I have a single network now that's b/g compatible. It works faster than the n network ever did and now no dropping of the connection which could happen 10 or more times an hour....which is impossible.
