OS Migration from Solaris 10 to Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher

Hi experts,
We'd like to migrate the OS of our SAP systems to windows from Solaris 10. We're still wondering which version of Windows we'll use. (matter of money)
Could you give me some docs, tips or advice to do that ? (requirements, how to do it, packages to install)
I have checked berforehand that all the SAP solutions we're using are compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher.
I heard I'd need an OS Migration Expert to do it, but still, before that I need to check if it's possible and a roadmap could also be nice.
Thank you in advance,
Best Regards.
Alexiel.

Hi Alex,
From license perspective you need to procure license for Windows 2012 but for installation you can downgrade it to windows 2008 R2 as required.
From suggestion perspective, it is always good to go with Windows 2012 to gain benefits from mainstream support and new features as compared to windows 2008 r2.
As per SAP recommendation, it is good to have OS/DB certified consultant to perform the migration.

  • Migrating DHCP Server From OpenSuse to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

    Hello,
I'm planning to migrate a DHCP server from OpenSuse to Windows Server 2008.
Is there any procedures for that ,Or should i configure my Windows server 2008 DHCP service again.
    Thank you

    Hi,
I have done somthing similar in the past. Basically i got exported all the scopes and settings from the linux dhcpd service, then created the scopes in Windows, stop linux dhcp service and start windows one. Use conflict detection setting to leverage any
    IPs lease from linux server.
    Hope it helps.

  • Migration from SBS 2003 to Server 2008

Couple things. First, I wouldn't bother with 2008 at this point.  Here's a pretty handy guide for 2012R2.

Did you spec your server already?

Hi guys,Very new to dealing with servers too much so please excuse any lack of info/dumb questions!I have been tasked to do a server migration for a small business. The details I know thus far (more to follow soon) are:There is currently only one server. It is running SBS 2003. It functions as a domain controller, and provides AD, DNS, exchange, DHCP and file sharing services. It is a physical server (Dell I believe). They want to move to another physical server running Windows Server 2008.There are around 15 users/terminals.There is a VLAN set up, not sure how yet. The VLAN needs to 'have a strong connection because heavy architect software needs to be used'Here is the plan of action I have so far:Ensure licenses for win server and exchange are bought.Install OS on new server, install all updates, service packs etc.Configure AD...

I am trying to install the dpm 2012 agent on a Windows 2008SP2 server. An automatic install failed, so I installed the agent manually. After installing the agent I tried to associate the agent. I got a success message, but in the management console there
is an error under 'agent status'. If I try a refresh on the server I get this error on the DPM server:

  • Migrating from Solaris Sybase Adaptive Server 12 to Windows2000 Oracle9i

Can I run the Sybase Adaptive Server 12 Script "SYBASE12_DSML_SCRIPT.BAT" on the Solaris (UNIX) server to generate metadata flat files (.dat) and then copy them over to the Windows2000 Oracle server and run the Oracle Migration WorkBench to capture the source model?

You should still be able to use the Oracle Migration Workbench.
The migration workbench is for microsoft windows, but can connect to oracle on HP using oracle's sqlnet, JDBC/ODBC bridge is used to connect to Sybase, which should be supplied with your Sybase release.
I hope this enables your migration to move forward,

    Hi,
We want to change our Server from 2003 to Windows Server 2008 64bits.
My question is : is there a compatibility between Oracle forms 6i (our application) and Windows Server 2008 ?
Will the migration be successfull, or will we have some bugs?
    Thks for your help.
    O.

YES. It worked perfectly for me, you'll have to use oracle 8/8i lite though.

  • Intermittant disconnection of Shared Drives on Windows 7 Client machines hosted in WIndows Server 2008 Standard Edition

    The environment - Windows Server 2008 Standard/Windows 7 32 bit Client machine.
Share - It is not a DFS share.
    Antivirus - McAfee
The issue - 1 user is unable to connect to a particular shared drive hosted from within the Windows Server 2008 Standard file server.  This drive is one of the multiple drives which are supposed to be connected to the user machine during logon using
the logon script.  All the other drives mentioned in the logon script gets mapped fine but one particular drive does not.  The user uses a laptop and we have checked his connections while in LAN, Wireless, VPN.  Everything seems to be working
fine apart from this one shared drive.  Rest of the users within that office gets the drive fine but just not this one user.  Since we are not domain admins so we do not have a visibility of the group policies linked to this particular drive and
hence RSOP as well does not help.  We have not seen the user getting logged into the machine using a TEMP profile as well for us to ascertain that the issue may be with a TEMP profile logon.
Please note that the drive does get connected at times and at times the connection just drops off!  As an interim measure the local IT has created a batch file and given it to the user which maps the drive for the user.
Any help in resolving this long impending issue would be much appreciated!
    Suman

    Hi Suman,
You could keep the session always active to workaround this issue. Please open Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Policy -> Security Options and set the value of the policy Microsoft Network Server:Amount
of idle time required before suspending a session to 99999 and see how it works.
This security setting determines the amount of continuous idle time that must pass in a Server Message Block (SMB) session before the session is suspended due to inactivity. Administrators can use this policy to control when a computer suspends an inactive
SMB session. If client activity resumes, the session is automatically reestablished. For this policy setting, a value of 0 means to disconnect an idle session as quickly as is reasonably possible. The maximum value is 99999, which is 208 days; in effect, this
    value disables the policy.

It's not normal, but others have not complained about it and we do not have any open bugs. However, I don't know how to troubleshoot crashing Windows guests like you can with crashing Linux guests. Your best bet is to open an SR with Oracle Support, and perhaps also Microsoft support, so you can track down why the guest is crashing.

We want to activate Windows Server 2008 R2 on the system where trial version is already activated,

    Hi,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with this issue.
If you mean that convert the Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation version to a full version, we can get following
details from this KB: Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 evaluation version
Question: Can you convert the evaluation version to a full version?
Answer: Although this conversion is not blocked, we do not support an upgrade from an evaluation version
to a full version or changing the product key to a full version key. Since there is no support for any type of upgrade you must do a install to new directory using non-evaluation media. If you change the product key to Full Version, the visual evaluation references
in Winver and as displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, but the WLMS service remains on the system and the media retains its evaluation status.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 as a resources

    Hello All,
Has anyone successfully used Server 2008 R2 as an IdM managed resource?
    Thanks for all replies.

    Hi There !!!
I want to use  Windows server 2008 R2 as a router for a lab setup. I have a DC, Exchange and some other machines. I want to use member server to use as a router. I have installed the routing and remote access role. I have also enabled it.
I am able to ping internal ips and external ips from the router ( Windows sErver 2008 r2 machine). The problem is that i am not able to ping other subnet from internal PCs ( ANY Of them).
    Regards,
    Mohammed.
But how did you configure it? You should be able to see other subnets if you configured it as a NAT router (but they will not be able to see your new subnet). If you configured it as a LAN router, you will only be able to contact other subnets if
you have set up the necessary routing so that they know how to reach your new subnet.
(Hint - what is the default gateway of the other subnets?)

  • Migrating ADRMS from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008R2

    Hi all,
I am struggling to find an answer on this, but effectively I need to replace a Windows Server 2008 (x86) server running ADRMS with one running Windows 2008 R2 (so I can't do in-place due to architecture differences). It has a separate backend on SQL 2008R2,
but what concerns me is this: "All servers added to an AD RMS cluster must be running the same
version of Windows Server as the first server in the cluster." from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771019(v=ws.10).aspx
    My plan was to:
    Spin up a 2008R2 server.
Backup the ADRMS databases on SQL.
Add it (2008R2) to the existing 2008 ADRMS cluster
Repoint everything to the new 2008R2 (DNS/SCP)
    Decommission the old server.
I suspect there's a stage where I need to upgrade ADRMS for the 2008R2 schema, but not quite sure where that would slot in (maybe after I add to the cluster?)
Am I on the right track here? Last thing I want to do is mess up ADRMS.
    Thanks in advance.

    Lync Edge Port Check (Beta)

I managed to get it working by following the steps I had mentioned above:
    Spin up a 2008R2 server.
Backup the ADRMS databases on SQL.
Add it (2008R2) to the existing 2008 ADRMS cluster (it upgrades the schema at this point and the 2008 server no longer works)
Repoint everything to the new 2008R2 (DNS only) - I needed to keep the existing cluster name and you can't change the SCP
Because the customer didn't use a custom FQDN and rather used the server hostname as the URL, I ran into authentication issues, which I believe were caused by Kerberos, so I needed to manually change the priority of authentication on the _wmcs Virtual directory
in IIS to use NTLM first and then Negotiate which solved me having continually being prompted for credentials until I received an unauthorized error)
    Decommission the old server.

  • Problems after print server migration to Windows Server 2008 R2

    Hi all,
New forum member, first time poster. I am at my wits end and have concussion from banging my head on the desk for several days running. Hopefully someone here may be able to help.
    Environment
I have recently moved our printing environment from a Windows Server 2003 machine to a new Server 2008 R2 machine in prep for rolling out Windows 7 x64 clients. We have 30-40 printers, majority of which are HP's (M2727's, P4015dn's, CM3530's, P2035's & a CM8060).
My procedure for setting up the printers on the new server involved manually creating each printer and using up-to-date drivers, we wanted to start fresh. The HP's are all using the HP Universal PCL 5 or PCL 6 (61.115.1.10527) x86 & x64 driver. We use Desktop Authority on logon to install the required printers for each client.
    Problems
Since everyone is now running through the 2008 R2 server we have had a bunch of intermittent problems pop up all over the place, mostly with our HP printers. When using the PCL6 driver some applications print a page or 10 of garbled gibberish (wingdings etc), so most printers are now using the PCL5 driver. Other applications print the error "PCL XL error" when using PCL6. Sometimes reinstalling the printer on the client machine will resolve these errors, however they tend to resurface.
When we use the PCL5 driver our M2727's intermittently report "Out Of Memory" on the printer display (they are stock with 64M RAM each) - upgrading the RAM may fix this but we never had this problem before on the 2003 server. This problem is not specific to the size of the printed document - it could be a 20 page report or a 2 page excel document. Resetting the printer will generally clear this issue temporarily. This is currently our most annoying/biggest issue.
Some people are having issues printing to a FujiXerox 340A-AP printer - in particular 1 person is able to print fine, where as another prints and the print margin appears to be far too small. After confirming all print margins on the server then reinstalling the printer on the client machine, the problem still persists. We have two FujiXerox printers, the second one is working as intended for 8-10 users with the exact same settings.
    Attempted Fixes
These are some of the attempted fixes that I have tried:
    Turning it off and on
Upgrading the firmware on the M2727's to resolve garbled printing & out of memory
Upgrading the firmware on the CM3530's to resolve garbled printing
Reinstalling all HP Universal PCL5/PCL6 x86 & x64 drivers on the print server
Ensuring that the 2008 R2 server is 100% up-to-date with MS patches
Backing up all printers on print server, removing the print server role, deleting all printers & drivers, rebooting, reinstalling the print server role and restoring all printers from backup
Upgraded Desktop Authority to the latest version - as this application is in charge of installing the printers on logon
As you can see we are having a lot of problems and nothing seems to make any sense. None of this happened before Windows Server 2008 R2 was brought in to the equation.
If anyone is able to provide any assistance that would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Hartz.
tldr; our printers are screwed since migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Hi all,
New forum member, first time poster.
