OS X Lion and Mountain Lion stops downloading on me.
I recently wiped my old MacBook Pro running Lion clean. Reformatted and installed Snow Leopard. Installed all the updates that came up under a software update. Went to redownload Lion and it gets to 425mb completed. And then says "calculating". Won't restart again. No matter whether or not I log out the App Store, restart my Mac. Same thing with Mountain Lion. It gets to 79.4mb. Then stalls. Never starts again. I had Lion previously. Why will it not allow me to redownload it again ? I'm not desperate to fix this as I recently purchased a me MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. But a solution would be great so I could sell this or give it to a family member

No, there is no ISP limit on my bandwidth. I have restarted my router but still no success. I can download other Apps but with Mountain lion 10.8 it simply says waing in mission control and in the App Store it say "an error has occurred". I have been working at this now for 3 days and it is very frustrating and I do not think the error is on my side but elsewhere.
I would suggest to contact the Mac App Store Support Team. Make sure to note down the error message and the steps that you do that lead to the problem. Click the link below and select the "Contact Support" option in the sidebar, there you'll be able to appropiately select your options and possible support solutions including contacting the Mac App Store via e-mail.

I am running OS X Lion on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 4GB of ram and a 160GB HDD. I was going to download Mavericks from the app store but waited to long. Now that Yosemite is out Mavericks has disappeared from the app store. WHY? A person can buy and/or download Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion but not Mavericks??? And the kicker is that it was FREE!!! I just wanted to load Mavericks on my MacBook Pro to see how it performs. If I could live with any slow downs or quirks, I'd leave it installed. If not, I'd roll my system back. Apple's policy of ramrodding unstable product down our throat is BS. I don't want to use Yosemite until it has become more stable!
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless. -
Why is searching so much slower in both Lion and Mountain Lion than Snow Leopard?
Hi, I use Snow Leopard run on several Mac Pros to perform multidimensional time-lapse-imaging in our lab. Snow Leopard provides instantaneous (seconds) searching for folders containing the image sequences I require for analysis (distributed across 4 x 2TB hard drives- images are saved under the structure Time\Position, and for analysis I need to retrieve all folders with the same Position label). Lion and Mountain Lion either fail to search or are painfully slow. For analysis I use internal hard drives connected as external volumes via USB and I suspect this might be part of the problem, however the same setup works flawlessly with Snow Leopard.
This problem is becoming very frustrating as I can’t figure out what has changed, or whether I am overlooking something obvious. I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro over 6 months ago which is when I discovered this problem and had to reinstall Snow Leopard. At that time I had hoped that the next OS might provide a better search function for our use, but after some testing it seems the same. To search through folders manually takes over 10 x as long as using a simple search in Snow Leopard. Can anyone provide me any advice as to what might be causing this problem and whether there might be a solution? I’ve tried a few free searching tools from the app store, but these do not perform any better than searching in Finder. I would obviously prefer to be able to invest in new Macs in the future which run the most current OS without having to install Snow Leopard on them all (if this is even possible without future models without causing compatibility problems).
Many thanks for reading and for any advice you can give me.

is there any benefit updating OS 10.6.8 too Lion and Mountain Lion etc. before updating to Maverick?
No. Before you upgrade check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
Application Compatibility
Do a backup before you upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
You might update your profile - shows 10.5 -

The difference between Lion and Mountain Lion
Can some one explain to me the difference between Lion and Mtn Lion? I'm currently 10.6.8 Is it beneficiall for me to upgrade?
Mountain Lion is an enhanced version of previous OS X and so that is Mavericks.
About upgrading it all depends on what your needs are and if your hardware supports it.

Safari crashing constantly on Lion and Mountain Lion
Ever since upgrading to Lion, and then, Mountan Lion, on an old MBP, and on a new one, Safari has been crashing all the time. Many crash reports have been submitted. Any ideas on why this is happening? It seemed fine on Snow Leopard. Practically everything running on each system is 64 bits. Nothing changed when upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion; Safari is still unstable.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -

Video chat in Lion and Mountain Lion
My iChat wont let me accept videochat invite in Lion and Messages wont let videochat in Mountain Lion. Any suggestions?
Hi,
There are several ways that you can open ports in a router.
Some of this depends on the capabilities of the router but UPnP is becoming more common.
UPnP allows multiple computers to use the same ports
A simple explanation is that the process allows the Apps on the computer to tell the router which ports to open and you don't have to worry about it.
Port Forwarding is another method.
It lists one port at a time in most cases and points that to one IP on the LAN (Computer)
You then have to set up the 20 plus port iChat/Messages uses.
You then have to make sure the the Computer keep the same IP
Normally this means turning Off DHCP in the router and setting the computer to do Static Routing.
Can only be used for that one computer it is set up for.
Port Triggering is a method that set up "Listening" port that then open other ports
You have to know which are the ports that need to be set as the Triggers/Listening ports in iChat or Messages.
Can be used by multiple computers.
Can't allow iChat to do Screen Sharing.
DMZ An Extreme form of Port Forwarding. An ON/Off setting enables all the ports (65535 of them) to be open to one IP (Computer)
Useful for testing but not that secure.

Is it possible to use screen sharing between lion and mountain lion
I could always use screen sharing between my 2010 macbook and my 2007 macmini, both with lion. But now since I upgraded the macbook to mountain loin it doesn't work. The macmini did at first show up on the macbook finder sidebar under sharing like it always had done but as soon as I tried to connect the sharing option disappeared and won't come back. The macmini can still see the macbook however, its on the finder there. But when I try to connect from the mini to the macbook I get an error message that says something like "server error" and contact administrator(that's me!)I can't upgrade the mini to mountain lion as it's too old.So it this an incompatibility between the two operating systems or is it something else?
I also tried to do it with BackTo My Mac,enabled through icloud on both computers but no luck, not even showing the Back to my Mac icon on either Finder sidebar like it's supposed to.When I did it through system preferences-icloud,it said this was successfully enabled but it just doesn't work at all.
Cross about this since I always use the macbook to control the macmini which is plugged into a flat screen tv and it's much easier than fiddling around with a mouse and keyboard.I can screen share my wife's Lion iMac using Mountain Lion and the reverse is true. If the computer is not showing up to be selected under shard on the left column of the finder it is probable a connection issue. I would check my home network, restart the the macs and toggle the sharded settings and energy saving settings like wake for network activity. Be sure and set up iCloud on both your macs and turn on UPnP if you have a router for your home network serving up NAT IP Numbers. UPnG will make the port forwarding enteries in you router to allow you macs to connect behind the firewall created by nat addressing.
I am currently having a problem with back to my mac. S
creen shares great the the Lion iMac but Mountain Lion to Mountain on one computer will not connect if the computer is sleeping. It lights the screen on the sleeping computer but never shows on the computer requesting to share. File share always workd. If I wake the computere before I attemp the connection, screen share work as it should. If I try to screen share while the second computer is sleeping, It will never work again until I restart the iMac. -
