OS X Server IP Multipathing for NIC failover

I am looking for pointers as to how to set up IP multipathing on an Xserve. I am looking for the equivalent to basic Solaris IPMP (I don't need probing, just link failure detection would do). Is LAGG from BSD available in the OS X kernel? That might do it if there is nothing in OS X directly. I would prefer an OS X direct solution only because while I will set this box up I might not be the one trouble shooting it going forward, and as such I will have better luck passing on an OS X solution rather than a BSD / Darwin solution.

Link aggregation is supported with Mac OS X Server. ([Details|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/AdvancedServer_Adminv10.6.pdf])
And at its simplest (and depending on your requirements), generic IP routing and DNS-based failover can also provide something similar, if your TTL timers are set (fairly) short.

well some servers allow you to install routing protocols on them. you could OSPF some links together.
or you could NLB if it is a microsoft server. this uses a heartbeat network, a virtual mac and an IP address bound to the vmac.
you could use NIC teaming. broadcom nics on dell servers allow you to configure them for loadbalancing, failover and a few other options.
or if the servers are mirrored using MSCS or something similar (i.e configured the same but independant) you could just load balance using DNS.
hope this helps. jsut some ideas quickly off the top of my head

  • TCP connection for DHCP failover frequently are broken in Solaris 10

    Hi
We have two dhcp servers which are installed in Solaris 10 and set to a failover pair. Currently, we can find that tcp connection for dhcp failover protocol are frequently broken. It looks like that primary dhcp server initiatively send FIN message to secondary one but in general, this tcp connection should always keep alive. On the other hand, the tcp connection can not completely be closed right now which FIN_WAIT_2 status in Primary one and CLOSE_WAIT status in secondary would last for a long time.
Will Solaris 10 cause this fault? Is it a known bug in OS?

  • Enqueue replication server does not terminate after failover

    Hi,
We are trying to setup high availability of enqueue server where in we have running enqueue server on node-A and ERS on node-B all the time.
Whenever enqueue is stopped on node-A, it automatically failovers on node-B but after replication of lock table, enqueue does not terminate the ERS running on node-B and as a result our enqueue and ERS both keeps running on the same host (Failover node-B) which should not be the case.
We havenu2019t configured polling in that scenario SAP note-1018968 depicts the same however this is applicable only for version-640 and 700.
Ideally when enqueue server switches to node-B, it should terminate the ERS on the same node after replication and then HA software would take care of its restart on node -A.
We have ERS running of version 701; could anyone please let me know if the same behaviour is common for 701 version as well?
Or there is any additional configuration to be done to make it working.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers !!!
    Ashish

    Hi Naveed,
Stopping ERS is suppose to be taken care by SAP only and not the HA software.
Once ERS stops on node -B there would be a fault reported and as a result HA software will restart the ERS on node A.
Please refer to a section of SAP Note 1018968 - 'Enqueue replication server does not terminate after failover'
"Therefore, the cluster software must only organise the restart of the replication server and does not need to do anything for the shutdown."
    Another blog about the same:
    http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/veritas-cluster-server-sap
    - After the successful lock table takeover, the Enqueue Replication Server will fault on this node (initiated by SAP). Veritas Cluster Server recognizes this failure and initiates a failover to a remaining node to create SAP Enqueue redundancy again. The Enqueue Replication Server will receive the complete Enqueue table from the Enqueue Server (SCS) and later Enqueue lock updates in a synchronous fashion.
So it is nothing about HA software, it is the SAP which should control ERS on node-B.
    Cheers !!!

  • Replicating simple Java objects for automatic failover

Is there a way to replicate a simple java object that is bound from JNDI
across all servers so that if the primary server fails, it will
              automatically failover?
We have a java client that uses JNDI to access EJBs on WLS5.1 SP8. In order
to determine client information, the client currently binds a simple java
class in the JNDI tree. The Entity and Session beans use the caller
principal to locate the object in order to access client-information for
such things as record locking, logging, etc..
We have to move this architecture to a cluster environment and we are
wondering how we can replicate this object across cluster servers so that
failover is handled automatically, and that it is still accessible through
              JNDI.
An RMI replicated stub is not enough, since it only works as long as the
server hosting the RMI object is alive.
I'd like to add that the object is created and bound at client start-up and
              destroyed at client exit.
Thank you for any advice or information,
              Dania Kodeih.

A: Replicating simple Java objects for automatic failover

That's what I figured. I guess the only solution in this case is to persist
the object during client sessions. I was hoping for something simpler, but I
guess I'll have to create an Entity Bean and everything else that comes with
              it.
              Thanks,
              Dania.

  • Server Update Wizard for Unity 7

I can't seem to find any documentation on this, but I'm basically looking for best practices when running the server update wizard.
For example, should I run the update wizard on the failover server first with the "automatic failover and failback" and "file replication" disabled?
    Any info is appreciated.  Thanks.

If you have a Unity failover setup with automatic failover configured, then you could safely install updates on the Primary server and allow failover/failback to work as configured.  In this manner, Unity will failover when the server reboots and failover when the server is back online and services are up.  Then when you update the failover server, it just requires install/reboot - i.e., all else is operating normally.  The process can be done in the reverse as well.  Update backup first, then primary.
As far as best practice is concerned, this is probably flexible since the SUW is usually a pretty benign process.  The best practice would be to perform during off-hours when call volume is low.  You shouldn't need to tweak any failover/failback settings as long as you're operating during an approved window.

  • UCCE for CCM failover with DNS SRV.

we are testing UCCE for CCM failover with Local DNS SRV. We have enabled the "Use DNS SRV type query:YES"&"Resolve SRV records locally:1" on CVP Call server configuration SIP tab.
The srv.xml file updated with CCM  IP addrs in this path \Cisco\CVP\conf\srv.xml
On testing, the agent state moved to reserved state, but call is not delivered. Static Route is added for Phone Extension as "500>,proxy.ipcc.com".
What will be the issue? Kindly let me know what needs to be done.
    Thanks & Regards
    JP.

So, as Markus already figured out, you need to make sure that your CUCM actually understands that it is the intended recipient for these SIP INVITEs. I.e. if you define the static route to point to cucm.cisco.com you have to specificy the specify the Custer FQDN to be cucm.cisco.com under the 'Cluster Wide Domain Settings' in the CUCM Enterprise Parameters.
A second thing to watch out for the CUCM Group assigned to your SIP Trunks. Each SIP Trunk, like any CUCM device, has a Device Pool, the device pool has a UCM Group defining on which UCM nodes that device 'exists'. For phones that typically means : which UCM nodes can I register to ?
But for SIP trunks this means : which UCM nodes have a SIP deamon process for this Trunk and so which of the UCM nodes will actually accept INVITEs for this trunk. The most common cause for 503 Service Unavailable is probably this, (not all) the CUCM nodes in your DNS / srv.xml round robin are in the UCM Group assigned to the Device Pool configured on the SIP trunk for this Call Server.
    Cheers,
    Kris

I have an Ipad 2 and here is what I am trying to accomplish.  On my laptop I connect to a remote desktop connection to access a shared program we use for reporting.  How do I set up my Ipad to access this remote server?  Thanks for the help.

Close ... before going for a specific Cisco app ... lets find out some details:
    Host we need more details:
What is your server environment (Windows Server, or Mac OS X Server, or Linux)?
What security is implemented in your environment - as what is restricted (RDP for all or specifc credentials on all machines? Are you part of local admin group to the server you wish to connect)?
Does your environment Support CISCO IPSec connection? If so use Settings> VPN and IPSec tab to enter VPN details, if not then go with above suggestion. IF your restricted to RSA then either built in VPN settings or 3rd party app for RSA would suffice.
Finally, there are many RDP applications out there I use "Mocha RDP Light" (free minimal ads when launched not when connecting).

  • Is it possible to have two or more virtual machines point to a shared instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 for systems administration?

    Hello All,
I am the Systems Admin for a production box running SQL Server 2008 R2.  I have been ask to do the following and and trying to figure out if it's even possible.
    1. The Production Server is named ProductionA
    2. Create 3 Administrator accounts on ProductionA each with access to the SQL Server instance on ProductionA.  Use Standard SQL Server login for credentials. i.e. Username/Password and assign the role sysadmin.
    3. Install 3 Virtual Machines on ProductionA each with Windows 2008 R2 64 bit operating system.
    4. For each Virtual Machine, Install SQL Management Studio and write down the IP Address assigned to each VM.
    5. Using Remote Desktop Connection, connect to each virtual machine to be able to manage the SQL Server.
Is this possible?  And, why am i doing it?  Because I DO NOT want the three people who will be having access to the production SQL Server to also have access to the primary host ProductionA.  Since I have to allow them to RDC into the box
to manage the SQL Server, I figure why not create a separate VM for each one of them and they can RDC into those instead.
    Does this make any sense?
Any tips are greatly appreciated.  The main reason for doing this is because the three people who will be accessing the box, I need to isolate each one of them and at the same time keep them off of the primary ProductionA.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello M,
Since you dont want the 3 guys to have access to Production machine A.You can install SQL Server client .By client i mean SQL server management studio(SSMS) on there local desktop and then create login for them in SQL Server.Open port on which your SQL server
is running for three of the machines so that they can connct. Now with SSMS installed on each machine each can connect to SQL server from there own machine.
I would also like you to be cautious with giving Sysadmin privilege to all three of them ,first please note down what task they would do and then decide what rights to be provided.
Your option will also work but you need to create 3 VM for that .Which is more tedious task.
    Hope this helps

  • Is RoboHelp Server the solution for us?

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out whether RH Server is the solution for us. I've seen a few similar posts in the forums, but none that really answer my specific questions. I'm hoping for feedback from someone with experience in RH Server, who is perhaps in a similar situation to us.
We are a software development company, creating desktop software for PCs. We have three main applications, and approximately 20,000 users. I am the company's (only) Tech Writer.
Currently I provide documentation (user guides) to our clients in the form of the good ol' CHM file. I develop these in RH8. Each of our applications is bundled with an installed CHM file which users access by pressing F1. I'm sure you're all familiar with this process. Our users run our software on their own systems, completely independent of us - there's no connection to us whatsoever. However, they all have Internet access, as it's a requirement for them to be able to use certain functionality within our applications. Hold that thought.
I also write Knowledge Base Articles in MS Word, as PDFs, which users access via our web site. Internal to our organisation, I provide KBAs and other such material for our Technical Support staff. These aren't available/accessible to the public. I write these in Word because they need to be sent around to a team of reviewers from time-to-time, and whilstI'm the only person with RH installed, everyone has Word.
What I'm hoping to achieve with RH Server is this:
Do away with the old CHM files that our users have. They're just awful. I'm hoping that in future, when our users press F1 from within our applications, they will be taken to a corresponding page on a web site or AIR page similar to what the Adobe Help looks like when we access it from RoboHelp. Forgive my ignorance if I've used incorrect terminology. That way they'll always be reading the latest Help content, live, online, instead of what I wrote last time we sent a product update out. I imagine our programmers will have to edit the functionality behind the action of our users pressing F1 in our applications. Has anyone done this? Are there any issues we should be aware of? What happens if our users don't currently have Internet access, for example - is it possible to call a local version of the Help instead, if this is detected? Has anyone done this with a similar number of users to us? We could well have 100s of users trying to access the system simultaneously.
Gather feedback from users. From what I understand, we'll be able to use RH Server to see which Help topic/content is being viewed, and also receive feedback from users. Can anyone give me feedback on their experiences with this? Any tips/hints/issues I need to be aware of? Is it possible for us to determine which users accessed which content? Remember, the idea is that users should be able to access this content by pressing F1 - I don't want them to have to sign in every time they need to access our Help system - it should be seamless to them. So, I'm wondering how it would be possible to track user usage without making them sign in. This is important to us because some of our content is region-specific, and it would be handy to know if users from those regions are actually accessing the Help content that relates to them.
Host our internal documentation on the same server as our public documentation. Is it possible to host all of our internal, private documentation on the same RH Server, making it available to our Tech Support team (and other internal teams) only? I imagine we could do this by password-protecting it, but I want to ensure that the public don't even know it exists. ...and our Tech Support people would not be impressed with having to sign in every time they wanted to access their Knowledge Base. Any tips here regarding locking down / restricting access to content?
    A quick note about collaboration:
Currently, although the Help menus are developed in RH, the KBAs and other PDF documents are written in MS Word. I send them around to a team of reviewers who add their comments/edits and send them back to me. From what I understand, this is something I can do with RH10 - export PDFs and send them around for review, combining the results later, at which time I give them a final review before publishing. Have I understood this correctly? Does RH Server play a part in this process? Can I use RH Server's feedback capabilities as a mechanism for my review team to make edits/comments? I guess I'm trying to get an understanding of how sophisticated the RH Server feedback system is. If I can use RH Server to have the team read/review documents, it'll save me having to manage a bunch of Word documents that I email them. It'll also minimise the chance that a redundant document gets distributed by mistake - something that can occur because people use their locally-saved documents I emailed them earlier, instead of the finals.
    Thank you.

    Hi, symmetricalMan
Let's see if I can tackle some of these "inline". There are a lot of moving parts to your system (you're a busy guy!)
I only have time for a few of these. Perhaps Colum McAndrew and others will chime it with their experiences.
    >>they will be taken to a corresponding page on a web site or AIR page similar to what the Adobe Help looks like when we access it from RoboHelp.
It would be WebHelp Pro in the scenario you mention (not AIR Help).
By "taken to a corresponding page" you are referring to Context Sensitive Help which RoboHelp Server does support (including your F1 scenario).
    >>What happens if our users don't currently have Internet access, for example - is it possible to call a local version of the Help instead, if this is detected?
Hmm. You could either package a plain WebHelp (not Pro) output and distribute for access on a share drive. The detection thing would be up to your developers. Come to think of it, AIR Help does have a potential alternative here which might be worth looking into. Obviously, there would be two systems to maintain. I'm not up to date on it, but you'll find info here in the online help: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/robohelp/robohtml/WS81F63111-6ACF-4a02-B2B2-461FEBFA8093.html
    >>.we'll be able to use RH Server to see which Help topic/content is being viewed, and also receive feedback from users.
Actually, the "feedback" is anonymous (no names are collected.) You can however, create "Areas" and analyze the traffic on topics according to sub-sets of your users.
The feedback is not direct from the users. In other words, RoboHelp Server (at least for now) does not support Commenting (as AIR Help does). So Feedback Reports are derived from the end-users "surfing" your site and collecting their search terms verbatim to get an idea of what they are searching for in order to improve your content.
    >>So, I'm wondering how it would be possible to track user usage without making them sign in.
RH Server Sites do not have to be "Protected" by authentication. It is your choice. You can have some sites (called Areas) that are authenticated and some sites that are not authenticated, all on the same RH Server. RoboHelp Server uses a database and can authenticate users (by setting up protected "Areas".) However, my networking knowledge is limited and you would have to ask someone else about "persistent logins" etc.
    >>content is region-specific, and it would be handy to know if users from those regions are actually accessing the Help content that relates to them.
Yes, you can do this. This is where RoboHelp Server can be used to create "Areas" for different content to be delivered to different audiences.
    >>Is it possible to host all of our internal, private documentation on the same RH Server,
Yes you can. However the Tech Support sign in scenario question would have to be answered by someone else. It's hard to know from where I sit.
    >>RH10 - export PDFs and send them around for review, combining the results later, at which time I give them a final review before publishing
Yes, this workflow would seem to work for you. However, RoboHelp Server plays no role in this review one way or the other. There are many alternatives for sharing the PDF which is described in the documentation.

  • Unable to install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 Release Preview on RTM 8 Enterprise

Unable to install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 Release Preview on RTM 8 Enterprise
    Standalone installer available here
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972
    fails with error code 0x80004005
Is this because my installation has issues, or would the admin pack files be updated for RTM?
Thank you in advance for any insight

    Found the solution here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itprogeneral/thread/6d8745e0-c4c1-463a-b4bb-09f6c9c22527
    Workaround:
Download the RSAT package intended for Windows 8 Release Preview: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972
Extract the .msu file with a tool such as 7-Zip.
Open an Admin command prompt and change directory to where you extracted the .msu.
Run the following command to install (if x86 you probably have a different .xml filename): pkgmgr /n:Windows6.2-KB2693643-x64.xml
Wait a while. You can look in task manager for pkgmgr. When it disappears, the installation is done.
Use the tools as per usual.

    Hi,
This 3rd time I followed this link. But nothing new, same error.
Can you please tell me how to do follow, I cannt do the 1st step, how to change the local system to windows level account, vice-versa. It is shown mine as
    Server Configuration Manager(Local)
From here I folllowed the steps ---[I cannt insert link/image :-(]
SQL 2008/R2 setup fails with "Wait on the database engine recovery handle failed"
If I right clicked on SQL Server Service, there is no option to change the account.
    Hello,
Thanks for your patience, did you tried stesp mentioned in below article
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqljourney/archive/2012/03/16/sql-2008-r2-setup-fails-with-quot-wait-on-the-database-engine-recovery-handle-failed-quot.aspx
To resolve it, follow these steps:-
When the installation throws this error, click on OK and allow it to proceed. It will fail for Database Engine, but the SQL Server service should have
been created. Check the Services console.
If the service is present, perform the following steps:-
    1. Go to SQL Server Configuration manager, right click on the SQL Server service, and change the service account (if it is local system, give
it a windows level account, and vice-versa). It might throw a WMI error but you will see the account getting updated anyway. If not, then use the Services console. Change the account for SQL Agent as well.
Use this link to change sql server service account
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345578.aspx
    2. Next, try to start the service. It should come online.
    3. However, you will not be able to log in to the SQL Server
    4. Now stop the service and start it from the command prompt using -m -c -T3608 parameters.
    5. Now try logging in to the server using admin connection from sqlcmd (sqlcmd admin:<server name>\<instance name> ...)
    6. Once logged in, use the sp_addsrvrolemember '<domain\username>','sysadmin'.
Also add the builtin/administrators to the sysadmin role
    7. Now stop the service from the command prompt and start it from SQL Server configuration manager
You should be able to log in to the server now.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Thanx Mete, yeah i did...
but i solved it some other way... not entirely sure this was
it though as i was doing a lot of things at once...
it was fds.swc... possibly it was out of date or missing.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.
