"other" disk space category....

I have a 4th Gen ipod touch and when I check on the disk usage it says that there is 8.2 GB used in an "Other" category.....what is this other and how can I reclaim that memory...cause 8.2 GB is a lot.  I would rather not have to reset my device and have to put everything back on, is there a way to find out what is in the "other" category that way I can delete it and free up some space.  Thanks

An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" included corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • 80GB of "Other" Disk Space?

    Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with hard drive space with my new Macbook Pro 13" 128GB Running OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Under the storage tab is "About This Mac" it says I have used up 84.67GB of disk space in the blue "Other" category. Because I edit lots of videos with Final Cut Pro X and record with Logic Pro X, I use lots of disk space and need as much storage as I can use. How can I find out what is taking up all of that storage, and how do i delete it? Below I have attached an image for you to get a better idea of what I'm saying.
Thank you for all of your help,
    - Jake

First, upgrade to Yosemite 10.10.2 by downloading and installing OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update. Second, open Spotlight preferences, click on the Privacy tab, then drag the Desktop icon for the HDD into the list. Wait 30 seconds, select the disk in the list and click on the Delete [-] button. This will force Spotlight to re-index the hard drive. Wait until indexing is complete which may take an hour or so. Then recheck storage.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • "Other" disk space is almost full; Can't restore "firmward file"

I am not quite sure what has happened with my mini. First of all, I did just get a new computer. I think this was the first time I hooked up my mini...maybe I missed a step here. I downloaded iTunes 7.0. Now there is some new summary page and it is telling my that my ipod has 3.60 GB of "other" information. I tried to erase and start over using the 5R strategy. I cannot restore because I get an error message stating that "iPod cannot be restored because firmware file cannot be found."
Needless to say, I am having serious issues. If anyone has some ideas, please let me know. I think I may have read the available information on the apple site, so any other info would rock.

I tried that and now there is an error message that says: The ipod cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application.
There is also a pop up window titled "Autoplay" that seems like it very quickly scans through my library.
It did help and took my iPod through most of the process, but it did not complete the restoration.

  • Graphical disk space usage analysers

anyone got any suggestions for other disk space usage analysers?
it's nice that on ncdu's site a few "similar projects" are mentioned.
treesize is a lovely little gui app, does what it needs to, clean n no fuss.
~but it's not in pacman or the AUR.
i'm not really interested in filelight, since it will want to drag along half of kde, and similarly i expect baobab is a bloater for the same reason with gnome.  no sign of philesight in the repo either though.
anyone got any suggestions for other disk space usage analysers?
perhaps a lighterweight, less DE-dependent, ring-style one?  ...if such a thing exists yet.
or is xdiskusage the best i'll find in the arch repos?

Just for the record, you don't have to go to ncdu or treesize webpage to look for alternatives, we have (some of) them listed in our wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … y_Programs
Maybe you can ask sb to put treesize in the AUR: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewforum.php?id=38 ?

  • 'Other' taking up half of my hard disk space!

I’m having an issue with the “Other” files on my hard disk, as in they are taking up over half of my disk space.
2011 MacBook Air 64GB running OS X Lion.  I use it mostly for surfing the net, storing music, photos and apps.  These things only take up 22 GB. I don’t store movies, and I have very few third-party apps.  There are no previous OS versions.  I’m the only user.  But out of 60GB, 30GB of that is in the “Other” category and I only have 8 GB of free space (and this is after I performed the steps below).  After reading a ton of blogs and forums, here’s what I’ve tried:
Time Machine is OFF (never turned it on)
Moved all documents to an external WD Passport drive
    Deleted all downloads
Installed and used OmniDiskSweeper, Onyx, WhatSize, CleanMyMac and MacKeeper: this cleared cache and removed old system log files
Cleared web browser cache and changed history to 1 day
    Removed unnecessary languages with Monolingual
    Uninstalled iMovies and Garage Band
    Removed old iOS device backups
    Emptied iPhoto trash
Emptied Trash (under Secure Empty Trash)
Deleted all emails (inbox, sent, junk, trash)
Before this my disk was so full it wouldn’t allow me download software updates.
HELP!  I don't know what else to do.  Any other suggestions?

  • Out of disk space--want to install on other drive

I am trying to install j2sdk 1.4.2.05 standard edition on my windows 2000 machine. I do not have any extra space on my C drive so I am installing it on another drive. However, when I click the application or try to go through the Windows Installer Package, I eventually get an error that there is not enough disk space on the C drive, even though I have pointed it to another drive. How can I force the installer to put everything on my E drive? Is there some commands that I can use from the command prompt?
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks

I tried going to the command prompt and typing:
    program-name-windows-i586.exe -is:tempdir e:\my\temp\directory
when i run the install program, i change the drive and directory that I want it installed, it still says that I do
not have enough room on my C drive (I even do the custom installation and force a different directory)
    any other ideas?
    thanks

  • What does the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iOS devices consist of?

I have searched everywhere for an "official" Apple response as to what the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iPads/iPod Tocuhes consists and have not found one.
    Apple, can you please answer?
I have multiple devices that contain the Other usage ranging anywhere from 1gb ~ 5gb and I'd like to know what it is.
    Thx!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple.
'Other' contains things such as Safari's cache and cookies, notes, contacts, downloaded emails (and their attachments), and the content of third-party apps. Unless you have, for example, newspaper/magazine apps and/or third-party music or video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) then 1 to 5 gig sounds like too much and you might have some corrupt files.
Have you tried syncing with you computer to see if that reduces it, and/or a reset (press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds ignoring the red slider, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot). Or you could try restoring to your last backup or back to new.

  • Hi, In "disk space," how do I identify what "other" is?

    Hi,
In "disk space," how do I identify what "other" is?
I want to free up disk space, and I've already backed up with an external hard drive, and moved files around.  I still have over 60gbs of "other" to tend to, and I'm not sure where to start.
    I appreciate any help!

"Other" is everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps, and backups. It includes your email messages and attachments, all your documents, downloads, and OS X itself.
To learn how to reclaim disk space used by "other" read: OS X: Increase disk space

HELP and i cannot return to my desktop with the old sofware so i cant use my computer normaly

This error means that your hard drive is badly corrupt and cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Since you say you don't have backups, this is very bad news. You may already have lost data irrevocably.
First order of business needs to be backing up whatever you can, but this may be difficult to do if the machine won't start up any more. See step 1 of the following post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21614450#21614450
Once you have backed up your data, you can address the other issues.

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Does iTunes offer a restore from other than current data on my pc?  I've lost all my pictures because of lack of disk space on my pc.

Does iTunes offer a restore from other than current data on my pc?  I've lost all my pictures because of lack of disk space on my pc.

Are you talking about restore of the iPhone from its backup, or something else? The first time you sync an iOS device on each calendar day iTunes will update the backup set for the device. If you remove data from the device and backup, then the backup of that data has gone. For this reason it actually makes sense to restore an iOS device periodically as, once used for a restore, the backup set is archived and a new one created.
Ideally you would have backed up these pictures somewhere. If you enabled it, you may find pictures in your Photo Stream.
In general you need to keep a backup copy of all your important files. iTunes will let you download most past purchases from the store but backing up other content is down to you. The user  Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy suggests a way to do this for iTunes, but the same tool can be used to preserve other folders of data.

  • Disk Space: Other

It is strange, but I swear that my disk space on my 30gb video iPod has decreased. I have had 3gb worth of space and now I'm down to half a gig. I have uploaded somew new music, but on the iPod management window on iTunes, it shows that over 2 gigs of space is used by "Other". I tried looking at my iPod in the finder window, thinking I might have dropped some stuff in there that is taking up some space, but it seems the most a folder is using is about 27mb. Strange. I can't find what is using that much space?
Anyone else have this problem, or know how to find out what is taking up so much space?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Other can be contacts, calendars, photos, album art, and anything put on iPod in disk mode. One way to clear things up is to restore iPod then fill it up again.

  • Disk space vanishing, other strange behavior

In the last two days TechTool has been announcing that my free disk space is getting low. Started at 15%, but it keeps dropping down to 1%. I've deleted about 100GB of data in the last two days, but it isn't helping.
Checked my log files which aren't ridculously big. None of my processes are using a fraction of the 160GB+ it shows as being allocated to VM. Some strange log entries in console related to MacHelper, but I don't think I ever installed it. Ran an uninstaller just in case.
Prior to this happening some other odd things have been happening for a week or so:
External drives aren't dismounting correctly. Click eject and the name remains grayed out and if I unplug the drive I get chided for removing a drive.
System hangs and requires forced restart. Hangs during restart on the desktop image.
Had some trouble with an external e-sata drive dismounting all the time using the card slot adaptor for e-Sata. Card would get extremely hot. Used FW800 but had strange behavior with 5 additional drives reminiscent of SCSI. Once I changed the cables around it stopped doing this.

You may not have gotten all of MacKeeper. From an earlier post of mine:
I'd search for it using EasyFind. Enter "MacKeeper" and "Zeobit." Set EF to scan all files and folders, invisible, case insensitive, package contents. Search using boolean and phrase. It will probably do a more thorough job than Spotlight. If you can't "Destroy" from EF, use Reveal in Finder to trash and authenticate from there.
It is also known to install a Windows emulator called "wine;" search for that.
Also, look in the Keychain for anything MacKeeper or zeobit related, and for its cookies in your browser. When finished, empty the Trash and restart.

Somehow, as BDAqua suggested, I'm still suspecting it's the logs filling up with a constantly repeating message. Are there any other Users? Can you log in to those and see what's going on with those logs?
Permissons repair has nothing to do with this.
Get OmniDisk Sweeper. Run it logged in to all your users.

  • What is disk space other on Mac bool pro

On my disk drive I have over 260 GB of  " OTHER " space used, But i don't know what it is and I need the disk space how do I frre this space up?

Any number of things - what cannot be classified into the other categories is Other. This also includes local Time Machine snapshots if enabled. To disable and remove snapshots:
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and enter or paste the appropriate command line. Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed.
To turn them ON: sudo tmutil enablelocal
To turn them OFF: sudo tmutil disablelocal
Note that turning them OFF will also delete all existing snapshots.
Otherwise, perhaps your drive is just full. If you select your drive's Desktop icon and Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. What is displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used in the upper panel?

  • The server is failing to download some updates. Event ID 10032 (ran out of disk space & extended volume, still got error)

On Friday, 9/17 @ 7 am, after deselecting Windows 2003 in products, I ran Server Cleanup Wizard (as well as sqlcmd -I -i"WsusDBMaintenance.sql" -S "np:\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query"), and 0 bytes were freed which I thought
odd.   I then selected Windows Server 2012 R2 and Office 2013 since we're going to be using those.
After this, on 9/19 @ 7:30am, the server had the message:      Event 364 Content file download failed. Reason: There is not enough space on the disk.    Source File: /d/msdownload/update/software/secu/2014/04/coreservermui-it-it_ebb7e1e8d487b90ffd719f06122a3db947b3f949.cab
    Destination File: e:\WSUS\WsusContent\49\EBB7E1E8D487B90FFD719F06122A3DB947B3F949.cab.
At some time during the day on 9/19, our SAN admin increased the volume (all server's volumes are on a SAN) from the SAN end, and I extended it in Disk Mngmt on the WSUS server.   I went home for the weekend
I came back today (9/22), saw I had gotten the "the server is failing to download some updates. Event ID 10032"   on Saturday 9/20 @ 1:30am.   I checked the volume \WSUScontent is on (the volume we extended) and it has
17GB free. So I assume space should not still be an issue.
The same 10032 error had occurred on 9/19, at 1:30 pm, but I assume it was before my colleague and I bumped up the disk space.  But why it occurred again the next day I'm not sure.
However, since the 10032 error on 9/20 @ 1:30am, it has not reoccured, and no yellow or red event messages.  So possibly all is well now.  Could it have been that WSUS was being sluggish to recognize the increased disk space, even though Windows
    itself recognized it?

Thanks Lawrence, I went through the steps you instruct on (which I did not know about, so I greatly appreciate that!), and freed up over 30GB of space.
    Outstanding! :-)
But your steps don't really address deleting all (solely) 2003 updates.
Correct. First, because you cannot DELETE updates, unless they are expired or old revisions, and use the Server Cleanup Wizard to do that.
Second, because the article was about removing *unneeded* updates. It does not consider the scenario where a product category is being retired
When I go to my "2003" update view, sorting by Any Except Declined, and Status Any, I still see tons of 2003 ones, some solely for it, others that apply to 2003 and other OSs. I want to leave the latter, but delete the ones solely for
2003. Not just superseded ones, but ALL that are solely for 2003.
You cannot delete updates. You can DECLINE updates, if that's what you want to do.
So let's talk a minute about these updates that might be applicable to operating systems other than Windows Server 2003. Let's be practical about the other operating systems listed. If you look closely, I suspect you will discover that those "other
operating systems" are either Windows XP or Windows 2000, but nothing else. Do updates for Windows XP or Windows 2000 really matter to you? I suspect not.
The reason I highly suspect this is because the practice of building packages targeted at multiple operating systems was terminated when Windows Vista was released (actually I think it happened with the release of WSUS v3, but this is just a matter of trivia,
the relevant point is that it's not done anymore, and has not been done for many years).
Ergo, I know for a fact, that NONE of the updates applicable for Windows Server 2003, will be applicable for any newer operating system. Ergo, it probably doesn't matter at all, so just SelectAll -> Decline if that's what you want to do.
