OUTAGE 6-01/2010 Yorktown, Mohegan Lake,Crompond NY

Yesterday (6/01/2010) I reported an outage affecting parts of the town of Yorktown Heights, NY (particularly sections of the Mohegan Lake, NY area). I use a Motorola Droid.
As of now, 6/02/2010 at 11:05 a.m. this has not been resolved.
We had a bad thunderstorm yesterday (6/1) afternoon.  After that, in my home, where I have ALWAYS received strongest signal (consistent 4-5 bars) signal dropped to 0-1 bar with continuous switches from 3g to 1x. Impossible to place outgoing calls; data connection extremely erratic, etc.
Interestingly, when I opened Google Maps and kept GPS disabled (so that it would rely on cell tower fix) -- it gave me a location of being in Garrison,NY -- which it has never done before (it always had reported me as being in Mohegan Lake, NY (and it always showed me as being off of Lexington Avenue close to its intersection with RT. 35/202).  So I know that the closest tower is not functioning properly !!  I have an older VZW device which also lacked signal within my home (so I know there is nothing wrong with my Droid).
I called VZW last evening and reported this problem.  After calling VZW support -- I drove around my local area and was able to receive a good signal in several other spots not near my home (for example at the Cortlandt Town Center on Rt. 6 in the area bordering Mohegan Lake/Cortlandt Manor, NY -- the signal strength was 3-4 bars with good data speeds,etc...)
I hope this issue is resolved soon.

Follow up to my prior post.An aside -- several of the cell providers in my area share towers (lease them).  It just so happens that my son has a pre-paid T-Mobile phone which also has been having issues since Tuesday. He called T-Mobile today and, unlike VZW's customer service was given an accurate and truthful explanation:  T-Mobile told him that 2 local towers were out since and because of the storm -- He was even given their geographic location ! and told an ETA for repair.  They didn't hem and haw and make up stories -- they told him what was wrong, where, and when it would be fixed.  That's the way to treat customers.
You have presented a very interesting series of events.....what was the ETA given for repair?  And who was doing the repair work?  Verizon?  T-Mobile?  Some other company?  Perhaps Verizon IS in the dark or has little to no control of the actual repair process if they are simply one of the "lessees" of the tower(s) in question.  It still seems they should have the same information as the other providers in the area, and giving YOU the runaround is not right.
Keep us posted.....I'm curious to see how this all resolves!
PS - Many years ago in my college days I would drive the Taconic Parkway to and from home upstate to Stony Brook  - and we'd spend summer weekends at my aunt & uncle's place on Lake Mahopac - beautiful, beautiful country!  And I loved driving the Taconic - so much prettier (and cheaper) than the Thruway!!!

  • Prepare Exchange 2010 for a Major Network Outage

We are planning to replace our Core networking switch in our production environment. I am looking for a best practice option for Exchange to be placed into during this outage. This will be an approximate four hour outage.
Our current environment for Exchange is this:
Exchange 2010 SP3 rollup 8v2 two CAS servers and Three MBX/HT servers.
I read a few articles and they recommended different things, one was to just power down all of the exchange servers before the outage and then bring them back up after the outage. To me this just seems like a bad idea. The other was to put the MBX servers
into maintenance mode prior to shutting them down. This seemed more practical.
Can anyone provide feedback, insight, and guidance in this case? Has anyone gone through this type of outage and if so how did you handle your exchange environment and what was your success or failures with the scenario you used?
    Thank you

When the server is in maintenance mode it moves all the active databases to other DAG members. It pauses the node in the cluster, and sets the DatabaseCopyAutoActivationPolicy mailbox server setting to Blocked. The Suspend-MailboxDatabaseCopy cmdlet is run
for each database hosted by the DAG member, and the cluster core resources will be moved to another server in the DAG if needed. This prevents data bases from auto activating in the case of a server failure. Just powering down an exchange MBX server would
cause the active data bases to failover to the alternate server, but once Quorum is lost due to more than half of the servers being shut down, I am not sure how the data bases would react after being brought  back on line. Based on
this it seems to me that putting the servers in maintenance mode prior to powering them down would be the safest bet.
TL;DR What I am really looking for is advice or experience from an Admin who has already gone through a similar exercise.
    Thanks for your input.

GO: "This article deserves absolutely a medal THANKS!"
    Jinchun Chen: ""
Richard Mueller: "Good topic. Grammar needs work. "Caution" states undocumented stored procedure is safe for production, but later states it is not."
Ed Price: "Great article. We should include the technology in the title. Good descriptions, and great References!"
JS: "Although the outlined solution is interesting and shows the public the usage of the "new" system views finding the right dependencies, it is not recommended to describe the usage of undocumented features such as sp_msforeachdb
as there are alternatives, especially in this scenario. You could generate a query using the sys.databases view and let it print out the database name along with the use statement. In addition to this and as the statement has to be run with a high privileged
account as schema information is secured as well, it should be made safe to SQL injection. In many case in the statements there is just a concatentation of values used. You can easily inject code in here, Also make sure that names / object identifiers are
quoted with [] in order to allow also special characters like spaces in the names"

Parsing Out Data From Flat File With Inconsistent Delimiters in SQL Server
Durval Ramos: "Very useful. Good job !"
Ed Price: "Fantastic job on the code formatting, in-depth descriptions, and robust use of images!"
AM: "Thanks for presenting multiple approaches to solve the problem. It would be good to see a second part describing the format file."
DRC: "This is a good article which provides different ways to import the data to SQL, But this article needs some modifications. Suggestions: • It would be helpful, if mentioned on which version of SQL server and Visual studio scenario
was tested • We might encounter errors while using the format files, for example we get the below error if the format file doesn’t have blank space (character ) at the end of each line Msg 4862, Level 16, State 1, Line 10 Cannot bulk load because the file
"C:\temp\good.fmt" could not be read. Operating system error code (null). • So it will be helpful if you can provide a sample format file and TSQL script along with the possible output which can be tested and compared. • The sample query and the
format file is not yielding the right output. Screenshots shown in the article has invalid values (for example ID coulmn has invalid values). Format file need to be fixed to get the right data. • The format file under section “Files With Text Qualifiers” is
also invalid and the data is not imported properly. • Implementation of import using the SSIS package needs more details about how to make the delimiter consistent, Attaching a sample package would be helpful. "

     Transact-SQL Technical Guru - May 2014
    Naomi N
    T-SQL: Random Equal Distribution
    Jinchun Chen: "Nice."
JS: "The crucial thing about such a procedure is to check the data before the randomization and afterwards. You might encounter situations where "John Smith" and "John Meyers" might have exchanged their First names
which is technically correct, but logically and obviously wrong. So make sure that there is one additional check afterwards that makes sure that eventual privicy concerns will not survive the random process. Normally this would not happen, but I have already
checked this is one of my older blog entries, where we exactly had that problem obfuscating data to make that operational and live data will not be recognized afterwards. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jenss/archive/2009/04/08/when-is-random-random-enough.aspx In
addition to this some attributes are sticky to each other like gender and First Name. You also have to make sure that your distribution might change statistically in relation to other attributes."
Richard Mueller: "Very instructive. Perhaps the See Also section should have more links."
Ed Price: "Great formatting and topic! Could benefit from more descriptions. Great article!"
GO: "Naomi, your article is nice. Simple to understand the 'problem' and execute the 'solution""
Manoj Pandey: "Nice article with a different way to resolve a given problem. I think this can also be done by using NTILE() function. I've added the code in comments section."

GO: "Great article, I enjoyed reading it. Thank you"
Manoj Pandey: "I like the idea, but it took me some more time to understand the overall logic as I'm new to Geo datatypes, Thanks."
JS: "For me not using this sort of things regularly, I don't see the problem and the benefit. I have no doubt that this is a brilliant explanations how to cope with a problem, but for me this is missing yet the red line. More pictures
would be helpful describing the problem and outlining the results produced."
Richard Mueller: "Needs more explanation, and perhaps an example. There should be links to relevant references."
Ed Price: "Good job on the opening descriptions! Could benefit from breaking up and explaining the code more. Images and references would be helpful. Good article!"
    Hasham Niaz
DataCleanUp() Function Implementation in MS SQL Server
    Jinchun Chen: "Good."
JS: "-Does actually not work for Case senstive areas where I want to remoce certain Upper/lower case characters. This might be not interesting for some people, but is extremely important and relevant to other people. The limitation is
that I can´t pass multiple values to be removed from the string, right ? Could this be implemented as well as many people wash out their data from unused / unimportant control characters. "I have tested it on a table which has got more than 11 Million
rows and it executed fine returning the correct results. Since this is a scalar function you will notice decrease in performance." Once you want to maintain the old data and keep the new cleaned up one seperately, you could suggest something like persisting
the data in a computed column which could be indexed and then help improving the performance. This would not be the case for any adhoc queries though."
Richard Mueller: "Very clever and also very useful. There should be links to references, for example to explain the PATINDEX function."
Ed Price: "Great job on this article! Very clear and well executed! See JS's comments for some thoughts about what's possible. Great article!"
Manoj Pandey: "A good utility Function that I can use and tweak for my future needs, Thanks."

  • Filtering a sharepoint 2010 list using Multiple values from Multi-Select Filtering In Infopath 2010 form

I am creating a browser based InfoPath 2010 form Calendar Filtering
using SharePoint 2010 Calendar List (All Events) and InfoPath 2010.  This form has data connection to the Calendar list. Goal is to
compare Calendar Events from Current Year to Previous Year. I have 2 columns called - Previous Year and Current Year. I have 2 drop-down controls in each columns called
Select Year  and Select Week. I also have common drop down called
Select Category which holds category of the events such as weather, power outages and so on. I wish to display specific events on specific date and specific week on both columns.
I am able to filter the list based upon Year and Week
on both these columns by applying rules in the InfoPath 2010 form. The real issue is that I want to apply category filter on the search result of
Year and Week. Or it needs to show all the values if I
select Category value as All. So I wish to apply filter on Search results using Category drop-down list selection.
Hope I could explain this better but I tried to do the best here. Any suggestions, hint, or pointers

I would like to praise the staff at the BT call centre, for doing an excellent job under extreme presure, with little or no help from other BT technicians. for the past 2 months i have been in contact with them about 'my' connection problem. the advisor who took my case called me up to day, to  say that all my woes can be traced to a major service outage at my local exchange, that is not only affecting me, but a lot of people - much to his astonishment and dispair, as no-one in the centre knew anything about the problem.  I only knew of the problem due to using a different modem to the bthub, and a download monitor they are working on the problem, but i wonder how many other people on here are suffering the same 'fault' as me - it being their local exchange, and not them.. by the look of it, quite a few.
below i summarise my journey to discovery (which is/was going to be the basis of my complaint, now fingures crossed - not needed)
Prior to June 30th 2010, I received an email from BT services saying that if I re-signed up on my option 3 plan, my current speed of 7mbps could be increased to around 13mbps – I signed up.
On or about 1st July 2010, Btbroadband suffered a major outage, losing the service for 2 days or so. After about 5 days, I still had not regained a proper service. I was receiving a asdl2 line speed of 0.01Kbp, so I made enquiries with the  BT help desk, who blamed a fault in my BT home hub modem even though I told them I did not use it prior to the problem, and only connected it after calling BT.
The day before my new Bthomehub2 modem arrived, I regained some level of service –
on July 6th  2010, of  around 2420kbps. Although extremely unhappy that my so called upgrade was infact been a downgrade, which had left me with half of what I had had before, I believed the BT help desk who had said their system was not at fault, so resigned my self to be on that speed.
I did a full system overhaul and rolled my system back a couple of months prior to ‘my’ problem, and brought and fitted a netgear router, all  to no effect, with my speed remaining constant at around 2418kbps.
On August 28th 2010, my speed dropped to 1963kbps
On August 29th 2010, my speed dropped to  729kbps
On August 29th 2010, my speed dropped to  340kbps
It then proceeded that my new ‘upto 20mb’ speed was 340kbps, and has remained so.
On  August 31st 2010, at 18.17hrs the BT help desk had my line reset to 6767kbps. I was getting a full  service
On September 1st 2010 by 05:20hrs the connection had dropped to 495kbps. By 07.28, it had reverted back to 340kbps.
On September 4th 2010, after a BT engineers visit, my DSL connection rate had been set to 8124kbps, with my ip profile set at 350kbps. tests on other speed checkers showed a 339kbps connection. I was told that the signal would improve, as it needed to synchronise .The engineer departed at 15.20 on  having done wire test from phone point and computer room. Capability of line was 18.6mb.
I was away that evening, but by the time I returned on September 5th  2010, my connection had reverted back to 340kbps.
Since then, my speed has been an average of around 340kbps.

  • Search issue with Outlook 2010 SP2 in Online mode

We are dealing with a weird issue that started after a routine maintenance window this past week.  We took our Exchange 2010 server down while we performed maintenance on our SANs.  After bring the servers back up we have developed an issue in
Outlook with searching.  When a user searches for emails only those that are before the outage are returned in the resultant set even if an email from after the outage matches the search.  However, if you search from OWA all the expected results
are returned.  Please remember that we are in Online mode with Outlook and not cached mode.
I can say that I have checked Exchange and it appears that all indexes are fine and the fact that OWA returns the correct result would prove that.
One other thing to note.  If you do an Advanced Find in Outlook and select frequently-used text fields it give weird search results, but it will include the emails from this week.
What am I missing?  I can't think of anything else to look for.

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, when Outlook is in Online Mode, the search is based on the Exchange Search Service. Although the search works on OWA, I still suggest you try re-indexing on Exchange Server to check the result.
Moreover, there are some steps we can perform to narrow down this issue:
    1. Switch to Cached Exchange Mode, then the Index is based on the local computer, check if then the issue persists. If the issue persists, we can say it's not about the index, maybe something else stops Outlook from searching properly, such as an add-in.
Also, it can be a workaround if it works in Cached Mode.
    2. Create a new Outlook Profile to setup the account, check if the problem persists. Please do not remove the previous profile as this is just a test, I want to know if the problem persists with a new profile.
Please feel free to post back with more details.

  • Lync 2013 Edge server compatibility with Lyn 2010 Front end Pool

    Hi All,
Technet article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj688121.aspx) says the following:
If your legacy Lync Server 2010 Edge Server is configured to use the same FQDN for the Access Edge service, Web Conferencing Edge service, and the A/V Edge service, the procedures in this section are not supported. If the
legacy Edge services are configured to use the same FQDN, you must first migrate all your users from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013, then decommission the Lync Server 2010 Edge Server before enabling federation on the Lync Server 2013 Edge Server.
Can you tell me why it is you have to change the External Lync Web services URL during a migration to Lync 2013 from Lync 2010. What purpose does this serve?
Also can you clarify this and explain why this is required, why would you have to migrate all of your users, would a Lync 2013 Edge not talk to a Lync 2010 front-end?
Any help would be much appreciated. MANY THANKS.

Thank you very much for all your inputs.
    We still have few questions:
    Questions:
Can you tell me if Lync 2010 users will be able to login using mobility if we repoint the reverse proxy (TMG) web services publishing rule to the Lync 2013 server? Remember both systems Lync 2010 and 2013 are using the same web
services URL so they will both end up at the Lync 2013 server. Alternatively if not we will migrate all users to 2013, this is not a problem
In addition to this I cannot find anything that states how Exchange UM will operate when you are running from a backup pool and the exchange UM contacts are not available because they are homed on the server that is down. This
configuration is 2 x standard edition servers pool paired. How can we make sure Exchange voice mail works during a pool failover?
Call Park is not clear to me I read the following:
Lync Server 2013 provides new disaster recovery mechanisms in the form of failover and failback processes. These failover and failback processes support recovery of Call Park functionality by allowing
users who are homed in the primary pool to leverage the Call Park application of the backup pool when an outage occurs in the primary pool. Support for disaster recovery of the Call Park application is enabled as part of the configuration and deployment of
    paired Front End pools.
Is this saying we need to deploy Call Park in the DR pool and use a different range of orbit numbers, or can we use the same range in the DR pool?
Further, I can see that Common Area Phones will be fine as they will log into the DR pool automatically. Response Groups need to be exported and imported to the DR pool. Incidentally these did not migrate well at all and have
    caused us a big headache!
Any inputs will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all of your time.

  • Issue with SLA reports of Exchange 2010 MP in SCOM 2007 R2 !!

    Hi,
I have issues with Exchange 2010 MP SLA reporting. Whenever report is run it fails on some or the other dataset(Outage**,SLAbyDAte etc.) When I digged in, I found that it is connecting to DW Exchange 2010 Availability tables + Planned maintainance +
outage table. The tables were not available in the DW, not sure how it got removed. Initially I tried by uninstalling and installing MP(Exchange 2010  & Exchange 2010 reports both) if relevant tables get created automatically but it did
not help and I was still facing the same issue. Then I tried to create the tables manually and check if it could resolve the issue. There was unique ID associated(different in different computer) with the name of most of the tables. I tool it from Exchange
report data source which exists in reporting server. But I could see that table remain empty with no records there and SLA report start giving different issues stating table instances do not exist.
Could anyone help me to restore the SLA report of Exchange 2010 MP ? How should I ensure that data start populating the tables ? I am also helpless here because we do not have correct DW dump to restore back to earlier when it was working fine.

    Hi,
Based on my research, to correctly install the Correlation Engine, consider the following when you install the Exchange 2010 Monitoring Management Pack:
Determine which server will host the Correlation Engine. While not strictly required, it's strongly recommended that the Correlation Engine be installed on the Root Management Server computer.
Make sure that you download and install the Exchange 2010 Management Pack that matches the operating system for the selected server. You can install the 32-bit or 64-bit version.
Make sure that you run the Microsoft Installer (.msi) package on the server where you want the Exchange 2010 Management Pack and the Correlation Engine to be installed.
After the installation is complete, the Correlation Engine service will have been installed on the server, and the Management Pack files will have been copied to the

  • Outlook 2010 - sending mail with attachment - "The system cannot find the file specified"

    Hi forum Fellows,
I have the following failure scenario:
    1. A user receives an e-mail with an attachment.
    2. The user opens the attachment --> Forwards the mail and writes something in the body of the e-mail
    3. For whatever reason the user leaves the e-mail and works on something else --> the user comes back to the e-mail an hour or more later.
    4. The user then wants to send the e-mail but gets the following error message: "The system cannot find the file specified"
    5. The effect is that the user cannot send the e-mail.....
    ------------------------------ TROUBLESHOOTING -----------------------
    - I can see that when the user opens an attachment this attachment is saved in the OutlookTemp folder. Actually, there is a difference between opening the attachment before or after clicking forward on the e-mail.
---- Before: Two files is written to the OutlookTemp folder. For example if the attachment name is FileX.pdf - there will be a FileX.pdf but also a FileX (2).pdf in the folder (if OutlookTemp is empty/do not contain a file with the name FileX.pdf already)
---- After: Only one file is written to OutlookTemp. That is FileX.pdf
    - Running Process Monitor when trying to forward the e-mail I can see that Outlook is calling a file that is not in the OutlookTemp folder anymore.
**** To me this is the heart of the issue. For some reason, when a user has an e-mail with an attachment open for an extended period of time (not sure on exactly how long is necessary), files in the OutlookTemp folder is deleted - files that Outlook is depending
    on to be there.
    - Going with a totally clean OutlookTemp folder does not help.
    ------------------ NOW WHAT ---------------
    - The question now is: Is this by design? Can it be fixed by some Outlook 2010 patch? Or perhaps a group policy/registry setting as a workaround.

    Red Baron

    Hello Red Baron,
Although not a complete answer, the way to treat attachments in emails require some discipline:
    1. Never open an attachment directly from the email (and NEVER edit it from there). Always save it in a known location as the desktop or (better) in a designated document folder. Then you can proceed as usual, like editing the contents, printing, forwarding
    the new version etc.
    2. Directly forwarding the attachment is ok, along with additional text in the body of the email.
    3. Having any (unsaved) document open for several hours should
never occur. What if there is a power outage?
Bottom line is thus Discipline. This is regardless of Operating System (which might handle temporary files differently).
These are the rules I teach my customers and they never leave any document unsaved for hours ...
    Best regards George

  • Event IDs 136 and 137 0x80000000000000 in System Log on Windows 2008 R2 Server, Exchange 2010 in Cluster

    Hi,
I'm having an issue with one of my exchange 2010 Servers. We had a power outage and upon recovery, I cannot start Services Net.Pipe Listener Adapter and Net.Tcp Listener Adapter (And thus cannot Start IIS and provide Exchange Client Services.) This is a
physical server (Not VMWare or Hyper-V)
The System event log has lots of Event 136's and 137s on Ntfs with the keyword - 0x80000000000000 - The General Messages are: The default transaction resource manager on volume C: encountered an error while starting and its metadata was
reset.  The data contains the error code.
    and
The default transaction resource manager on volume OS encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

When I attempt to start the services - I get the following errors:

Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error.
The Net.Pipe Listener Adapter service depends on the Windows Process Activation Service service which failed to start because of the following error:
Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error.
I have tried the "fsutil resource setautoreset true" fix without success.
Any ideas or direction would be much appreciated. Restoring this server will be extremely difficult.
    Thanks!

    We can close this question.
From an elevated prompt, I ran 'fsutil resource setautoreset true' and attempted to remove the files with .blf and regtrans-ms file extensions from C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR. but these files were locked by system processes. (They are also
tagged with the hidden file attrib so you may not see them at first)
So, I booted the system with a Windows 2008 R2 Install Disk, selected repair OS and selected the command prompt. I then performed a chkdsk /f c: and selected "Y" to unmount the drive. It made some repairs.
With the system booted from the install disk, and chkdsk executed, the locks were freed and I was able to delete the files from C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR.
Once the system rebooted, the services came back fine and everything was back to normal.
