Outage in Southern California High Desert Area (93555)

I am currently experiencing an outage in Ridgecrest, CA. Any information on when service may be restored is greatly appreciated.

The Verizon tech rep I spoke with at the toll free customer service number says that 11 sites are out and they do not have an estimated time for restoring the service...she is unaware of the exact cause of the outage...

    Hi Sam,
I am not sure wheher memory is really a serious constraint anymore. Consider this:
    a) the price of memory today is pretty much at the price point of hard disks in the year 2000 (at least according to a study I saw). In 2000 we happily ran business systems without being worried about the cost of hard disks ... and that is where we are today with RAM. Sure, disks also became much cheaper, as did flash memory, but the speed benefits of RAM are so superior that it is worth investing in it.
    b) there are already 1 TB RAM blades available, and I think there is now a 2 TB RAM blade on the market (I heard about Samsung having one, and others may have one too)
    c) we indeed routinely achieve compression factors of 10-20 x. It all depends much on how full the table field is, and how homogeneous the content. A field "Currency" compresses great, a field with a "UUID (Universally Unique Identifier)" does not.
    d) customers typically only want to access this and last year's business data (and keep the rest just for reference)
So I think that it is quite possible to have the active business data even of the largest SAP customers completely in memory, at a reasonable price point. Sure, more expensive than disk ... but who cares about disk anymore (apart for backup)?
    Kind regards, Oliver

  • Finding and Engaging Certified BlackBerry Professionals in Southern California? Massachusetts?

We're migrating our few remaining BlackBerry users to the BlackBerry Classic devices, and we'd like to engage firms and/or professionals with certified competencies in the southern California and/or Massachusetts area to assist.
If successful, we'll roll out more.
The "Partners" shown on the BlackBerry website are generally overseas.  Other web-based searching has been fruitless.
Any advice on how to find and engage qualified support for our small migration would be most appreciated.

  • I am moving from Southern California to Maui, Hawaii and I need to figure out the best way to get my 24 inch iMac across the ocean. Does anyone know the best way to do this?

I am moving from Southern California to Maui, Hawaii and I need to figure out the best way to get my 24 inch iMac across the ocean. Does anyone know the best way to do this? I have found GearGrip's LCD harness so that I can do carry-on onto the plane...  Or maybe use a Pelican Case to do it as a "checked bag"? Or any other suggestions??! Please help!
    Thanks so much!!

I don't recommend you send the iMac in a checked bag. Might get damaged.
Check the airlines website for carry on guidelines.
Or, if you have the original box that the iMac came in, if you have someone who can pick up the iMac for you, send it ahead Fed Ex and insure the package.
Just make sure the display is covered to protect it. A blanket perhaps.
    Aloha ...

  • FLICKER IN HIGH CONTRAST AREAS Premiere CS5.5

    Hi,
I am getting video flicker in high contrast areas of my videos. I recently posted up a discussion to get the correct sequence settings and that has worked miracles...
Here are the links to my previous discussions...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4092910#4092910
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4102131#4102131
Now, my footage is looking great but when I play it back on a TV in DVD format, areas with detail, such as... Details on an Indian wedding dress, trees, backgrounds with distinct dark and light shades all flicker. By he way, I've slowed the footage down to 30%.
    I've already read some posts...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3889344#3889344#3889344
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3808039#3808039
I tried reading others and looking for them but didn't find the problem or resolution specifically.
I have already tried right clicking the footage, going to field options, then clicking flicker removal, but when I play it back the picture is good until the camera pans, and that's when you can see he picture jumping or jittering.
Ot sure if you need these details but here they just incase.
    I use windows 7 64
    Premiere CS5.5
I read about the temporal smoothing, but also read that it doesn't work in manual mode of the shadow/highlight effect.
Below are some images of my sequence and project settings + clip info

    Hi Ann,
I've tried a different TV (2 different TVs) and the results are a a little less flickering but the flickering is still there. I also checked the speed and it was at 45%. I then went ahead and changed the speed duration to 25% and then did another export at 50% speed duration as well. I found that the picture was a little steadier but the flickering in high contrast areas were still the same.
I also did another export with the same settings,  'speed duration' - 45%, 25%, 50% with Flicker Removal in the field options and in the steady shots it was great but if the camera or objects were moving then the picture jumps. Would you have any more suggestions I could try?
Was 45% speeed duration then the wrong speed to choose?

  • 3G outage in Northern California

I noticed 3G outage in San Francisco Bay Area for the past hour. Restart of the phone and removing the battery didn't resolve this issue. Did anyone else noticed that in other areas as well?

Finally, I was able to speak to supervisor. There is a problem with Sunnyvale router switch that is taking care of majority of the Northern California and especially SF Bay Area. There is a master ticket open for that and Verizon is working on resolution. No ETA at this time. Supervisor mentioned that when the next bill will come we can call and request bill credit for the day/time without coverage.

  • Southern California FIOS excessive hopping (BAD LAG)

Ive called fios about this issue multiple times and they have still yet to fix anything. Is 25 hops to google normal? Is routing me across the country( sometimes multiple times back and fourth) efficient? This issue is killing my online gaming. Verizon advertises that fios is the best for online gaming but with all these inefficient routers i don't see how it can be.  115ms ping times to google is bad on its own so you can imagine how bad it is on xbox live. Its basically unplayable. Here is a video of someone else having the same issue so i KNOW i am not the only one. I feel like because most people probably dont game a whole lot this issue isn't at the top of verizons to-do list but its getting annoying. Could a mod or someone please put me in touch with a person who will fix this issue. I have about 40 traceroute logs that are over 20 hops!! to sites like google, espn, yahoo.  Almost everytime the route is different depending on the time of day. If you are reading this and are having lag issues i suggest you download a traceroute program and post your results to this thread because calling their tech support and talking to some guy in India for an hour will get you nowhere. PLEASE HELP!!
    DARN

That video has got to be one of the worst "analysis" of a problem I think I've ever seen.   No ... I take that back ... some of the other posts which come up as "related" are far worse and in some cases even laughable.  But, let's try to take a look at what he's showing on his screen and complaining about.
First, router hops does not necessarily equal latency.   While the first 7 or 8 hops in his diagram are Verizon local and Alter.net (also Verizon) hops, look at the latency thru all those hops ... less than 20ms.   That's pretty darn good and not atypical in today's networking.   Many of today's layer 3 switch routers do the packet handling at the port/card level and can very quickly move traffic without introducing much if any noticable latency.
What happens next?  Well, it dumps into Level3 -- which is a different provider and from there the routing traffic takes  to the final destination is NOT within Verizon's control.    A full 2/3's of the transit of this session happens on Non-Verizon networks.   Now, perhaps Verizon could add some more peering points in their network, but at the end of the day, internet routing is a funny thing where you're dependent on the route information coming into your network when calculating least cost (network speedwise) paths.   This could be a condemnation of the overall infrastructure of backbone internet providers in California -- but it's hardly one based solely on the video posted  which points at Verizon.
The guy goes on to complain about 100ms+ latency and the screen shot clearly shows 70ms or less all of it picked up from other carriers networks.  A little truth in advertising if you're going to make a rant is probably appropriate.  With that said, I hit 12 hops to the same site and I get low 20ms RTT's, so that is substantially different (the server in question being Google's public DNS -- which is probably AnyCast, so there is no certainty that I ended up on the same server this individual did).  A 60-70ms RTT for coast to coast traffic, for instance, is a physics-based reality (that silly little "speed of light" thing).  Interestingly enough, I've seen poor performance to Xbox live and when I ran some analysis, the latency was all coming from the last two to three hops -- capacity issues close to the Xbox-live could, not the local or intermediate networks.
Now, I don't know your professional background as it relates to carrier class wide-area networking, so maybe you have some other pertinent information which you can add to what you provided so far, but at a minimum, why don't you post some of the traceroutes you made and let folks here take a look? Worst case you'll not resolve the issue, but you'll get some confirmation of your speculation that you're indeed barking up the right tree.

  • Southern California Fios Slow Speed 7/1/13

Did anybody experience very slow speeds today? My internet was down for like 1-2 hours not so long ago and extremely slow speeds..it just went back up right now... am i the only one who experienced this?Oh and is there a system status page to see the network statuses? Thanks

To answer the last question, the network status page has been gone for ages. Best way to check at this point is phone or live chat with Verizon. The reps are always willing to check for outages if you ask nicely.

  • Why does Letchworth State Park have no service at all.  High traffic area.  Lots of tourists.

Letchworth State Park in NY is call the Grand Canyon of the east.  It has 3 high falls and a huge canyon.  Very Popular tourist attraction.  Lots of people traffic.  Dangerous area.  14 year old fell off a 200 foot cliff last week and died.  How did they summon help.  Not through Verizon.  No service at all through out 80% of the park.

The reason is regulatory interference. For many years people who live in the Adirondack Park Corridor also had zero cell service. Most do not even today. But Verizon does have two towers there now.
Slow progress. In fact they are made to look like big trees because the residents did not want the towers showing.
In your location it is probably the same issues. Towns and villages or even New York State  just won't approve placement of towers.
It is the same all over.
Remember the state putting emergency phones on highways and other areas that had no cell service? Then spent millions removing them? Then put them back for millions more tax dollars due to people yelling for their return.

  • What can be done if other higher bids are received after the bid is closed?

What's your question? When an auction ends normally, no more bids are accepted and the highest bid received wins the auction. Or do you mean, what to do if I'm outbid?

Are you the buyer or the seller? If the auction is closed and someone contacts you with another, higher bid, too bad for him (and you). It would be unethical (and difficult) to refuse the winning bidder. To say nothing of dealing with someone who is unwilling to follow the normal, protected procedures. If you are a bidder and someone bids higher than you, bid again. The usual advice is : bid once, bid your maximum. The eBay 'bots won't push your bid any higher than you have instructed them. That can be trusted.

  • Clarity/shadows + distortion correction = terrible artefacts in high contrast areas

common example (clarity and shadows +100):
    without distortion correction
    with distortion correction
    Raw file: nycz.info/temp/castle.dng

The adhoc fix I'm using for images where it's causing problems is to paint out the problem areas with a localised adjustment brush with a very large hit of negative clarity. As most of the problem areas have been pretty small it's an easy fix, but I'd like to see the issue addressed before the final comes out as close examination has shown it up on quite a few images (reflective mike against black stage background, pier edges against a bright but cloudy sky, tree branches against the sky). I've also now set my default to having lens profile distortion off and only using it where I need it.
Edit to add: Unfortunately on the image I'm working on at the moment, it only removes it as long as clarity is set to less than 50 - I need the lens adjustment to get the horizon flat, and I want the clarity, but if I try to have both I'm getting nasty white streaks along the pylons of a pier and it shows at screen size  let alone on prints or 100 per cent view.  With this particular image any amount of clarity over about 15 and the profile image adjustment is producing ghastly results, visible at small sizes.
Edit again - urggggh. Manual adjustment to level horizons (beach images again) using lens correction plus clarity isn't good either. I've got rather a lot of those and basically can't use any amount of clarity or I start getting areas of light stripes along dark high contrast edges. However if i go to the crop and straighten settings,  and straighten there, it's fine.
Edit again: Ok this is an app killer. Back to Lightroom 4.0 (If I can work out how!). Too many of my images are affected, and affected noticeably. What a shame as the defringing in RC2 is absolutely fantastic on long lenses, but this is affecting too much stuff.
I'm getting it  on quite a few images I've done nothing to excepted converted them to LR4 - it's very clear on the before/after previews of PV2010 and PV2012. And the edges don't have to be that high contrast - I'm not sure if this screen shot shows it clearly enough but conversion gives a row of little white dashes along the green girder in the attached images Click on images to see them a bit larger- the first image shows small size before and after comparison with problem area highlighted - nothing done except change process PV2010 to PV2012; second image shows PV2012 magnified a bit. Turning off the enable profile corrections button returns image to PV2010 appearance. Removing  clarity  adjustment will also remove artifacting -  in this case it's the clarity that is mucking things up. I can get the same artefacts with clarity on zero and the shadows pushed up above 70. Clarity gives problems at much lower settings.
