Outgoing Mail - Authentication grayed-out, password not saving

I am running into a strange problem since having to restore my iPhone after the 1.1.3 software update.
I am unable to send mail. What I am finding is that the mail accounts that I have set up are not using the password I need to authenticate my outgoing mail. There are two more detailed symptoms, and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen them...
1.) When I enter a password into the "Optional" area, it isn't staying-- when I go right back to the config screen for that account, it is already gone. Not surprisingly, I am then failing to authenticate when trying to send mail.
2.) I notice that the "Authentication >" button on the Advanced screen of email account config is greyed-out. I suspect this is somehow related.
I have tried re-creating the accounts a number of times. Eventually accounts are created, but outgoing email isn't working. This was working before the update, but I also deleted and re-created the accounts after first seeing problems. My provider has ports 25 and 587 open, and requires password authentication to send.

I may have found my own solution for this, so I am posting it here in case anyone runs into the same thing.
I removed all Email Accounts from my iPhone. Then I recreated them one at a time, from scratch. If the Add Account screen came up with previous info in it, I started over until it started blank. I was sure to enter the server addresses, passwords, etc. correctly the first time. I didn't specify ports at all. I had to click past a "Do you want to retry without SSL?" message a couple of times for each.
Once all of that was done properly (took a few tries) the accounts appeared with the password already saved rather than blank. Sending email then worked. The "Authentication" on the Advanced tab now shows up with "Password".
This looks like a subtle bug to me, even though it has a work-around.

  • IPad2 iOS 6.1 cannot send email - password not saved

I recently upgraded to IOS 6.1 and it must have been around that time that I started receiving errors when trying to send emails.  I can recieve fine, but cannot send.  The error I get is "A copy has been placed in your Outbox.  No password provided.  Please go to Mail Account Settings and enter a password."
When I add the password to the outgoing server it verifies.  I try to send and get the same message.  When I go back to the server settings the password is no longer there.  Why won't my password save and how can I fix this?  I never used to need a password but for some reason it won't work now without it.
I was able to get it to work once from home with the password but now it won't work anywhere.  If i try adding a username as well as the password it just gives me an error that the user name is invalid.
I have checked all my smtp and outgoing server settings, added multiple servers (primary, remote, etc....) and validated ports, changed my webmail password with shaw (to ensure req's for mobile access were met), tried deleting the account and setting it up again, etc...  Everything short of actually restoring my ipad, which I don't want to do unless there is no other way.
Also as an FYI - I have 2 mail accounts with Shaw but use one only to send mail (in the process of removing the older one).  We also just moved and cannot Shaw service at home so are with Eastlink.  The Shaw account is still active and will stay active and I have added both Shaw and Eastlink Server details for outgoing mail.  When I'm not home, I rely on my Bell 3G connection for data.
Its very frustrating since I no longer have any other way to email and don't have a cell phone so my main way to contact atm was via email.  I am fairly certain that the issue is related to apple software and not my servers, but I'm no expert.  I have read that I cannot downgrade my iOS as well.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Ya i tried that (see above). No such luck :(. Thx tho.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

  • Old mail keeps coming back? & Junk Mail Delete grayed out.

    Issue 1
Old mail, dated from previous months, keeps appearing, mainly in Trash.
I read some Discussion about 'ipurge,' -- I tried it as a Terminal command but said it wasn't there.
I checked with the mail server - Google -- and the emails are not there...
    Issue 2
Also, on Mail menu>Mailboxes>Erase Junk Mail is grayed out.....and maybe this happen after starting to use a spam filter (SpamSieve).
I sure wish I didn't get so much spam. My email address must have recently gotten picked up...it's disgusting.

    ONE DAY LATER -
From another thread I got the idea to check out these ever returning trashed emails. The idea there was to delete Google's Junk folder.
Did that but it didn't seem to solve the problem although the idea of investigating the Google Mail Server.
That led to discover that after clicking on Trash/Delete for emails they went into a Trash folder -- and stayed there -- and a 2nd trashing was necessary and there was a tab/button saying: DELETE FOVEVER, which sort of implies that Trashed items hang around and require this 2nd trashing, with clicking DELETE FOREVER (see photo).
I'll see what happens over the next few days.

I've been using LR with my Nikon D3200 for a year or so. Shooting in RAW/NEF no issues with import etc until I updated LR and now I can't get LR to allow me to select when I try to import. It does show the images but they're grayed out and not able to be selected. Any thoughts? TIA

Greyed imaged in the Import dialog box mean you have already imported the photos into Lightroom, so there is no need and no benefit to importing them a second time.
Just go to the Library module, search for the desired photos, and resume working on these photos.

  • Keychain: What happened to "passwords not saved"?

I was about to answer this question by directing the user to Keychain Access, where he could find the relevant website and simply delete it.
For as long as I've known, if you tell a website to never save passwords for it, Safari would create a Keychain entry with the website URL along with the note "passwords not saved". From that moment on, Safari would not ask if you'd like to save the password. The Keychain entry was self-explanatory; if you asked Keychain to show the password the field would be blank.
So, I checked my Keychain for the several secure financial websites where I store various amounts of the enormous Galt wealth all over the globe. They're not in Keychain any more - they're gone completely!
I suspect this happened when I updated Safari from 4.0.4 to 4.0.5, since I got the familiar popup "Keychain has been updated" etc.
Something must tell Safari not to ask to store a password for a particular website, and without a Keychain entry, it can't be the Keychain, right? So what is it now? A cookie?

Thanks, BD, this makes sense to me, though I can't seem to find a Login keychain I think I understand what's going on now.
The difficulty seems to be function of how Safari interacts with secure websites, and that's changed with Safari's evolution. At one time Safari would give you the option of saving names and passwords no matter what. They were stored in Safari's Autofill preferences while the actual passwords were stored in the Keychain. Later, it appears that Safari began to honor a secure website's request to not even do that, so I'm never given the choice. Those Keychain entries disappeared.
Firefox behaves differently still. At least one secure website will not allow Safari to autofill, but the same one will autofill with Firefox. It requires a ridiculously secure, non-memorable password, such as U*ng%!+{&.4 - you know, the kind you have to write on a Post-It note stuck to your monitor since it expires every 36 hours. It's a government website and by definition, stupid. For that one I use Firefox.
I would surmise that if the internet standards allow for a choice, Apple is taking the more secure route.
So, some websites, even though their address starts with https:// allow Safari to store names and passwords. I surmise that some do not; for those Safari will not even give you the option. I was looking for those in my Keychain - now they're gone, and I guess that's the way it's going to be!
You deserve a by the way, but I had clicked "Helpful" before I unraveled this mystery. Sorry!

  • Sound for outgoing mail sometimes happening and sometimes not

    Hello,
I noticed already some time ago that Apple Mail seems to make the usual sound for outgoing mail only sometimes and sometimes not. It is more not happening than happening. I cannot recognize any pattern in this behavior.
Any idea what is going on here and how to fix it - or is this a normal behavior for Mail?
    Thanks.

Thanks--I found it interesting! Especially when Spell Check quit working for me, too.
    Very weird.
I went back and selected 'Correct Spelling Automatically' in Text Edit-- that works, but I don't like it either. Whoops, only intermittently. I just looked again and that's not working now. Wow, no restart of computer and I hadn't closed Text Edit-yet it stopped working.
Spell checking seems to be behaving badly. It will not underline in mail--until I change a misspelled word....and then only sometimes. At the best it's intermittent.
I hope someone found it interesting enough to fix w/the next system update...

  • After syncing my music onto my iphone5, why are songs grayed out and not playable

after syncing my music onto my iphone5, why are songs grayed out and not playable?

If you are syncing music to the iPhone automatically, you won't be able to drag and drop tracks on to the iPhone and the music will be grayed out.
You'll have to Manually Manage the music.
Configure iPhone, iPad, or iPod for manual management
If you have iTunes 7 or later*, follow these instructions:
Connect the device to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the Devices list.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos".
    Click Apply.
Even when you have enabled manual management, you can still sync some content automatically. Select any content tab, such as Video, to enable automatic syncing for that type of content.

  • Networked user accounts, mail passwords not saving or notes?

    Hi there,
I have a mac mini set up as a server with latest software. On it i have 20 networked users which use between them for different mac mini's.
Problem which i have come across and i haven't found a solution yet. When i created them emails on there user accounts the incoming mail password won't save? On occasion i has saved, but once log out of the user and log back in the password has gone. which then it prompts me to keep typing the password in and won't save the password. This is very frustrating!!
I have also just noticed when i put message in notes and then log out and log in the the message has gone. This got me thinking it could be something with the user account not saving any data that put in? I don't really want to reformat the server if i don't have to.
If anyone has solution to this problem, it would really handy to know?

I click the Note button, nothing happens. The feature is completely out of service. I don't understand. Am I missing something obvious? I have tried the keystrokes too, no reaction at all, no errors, just can't use Notes, at all! rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Please help.
Update: I opened Console to see if I could find any errors immediate after trying to create a note and this is what I found:

  • Outgoing Mail with Yosemite still does not work

My SMTP outgoing mail still will not work since I upgraded to Yosemite. It worked fine with Maverick. I have tried deleting the mail and starting over unchecking different things and retyping the password.

this helped immediately: i changed the DNS (network settings) to the google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 – all emails went out in the same second.

  • The To Do List Items in Mail are grayed out. I can't edit or mark them :(

As stated in the title, the To Do items in Mail are all grayed out, I can't edit or mark them complete anymore. In iCal, on the other hand, To Do items are working correctly. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and the To Do items were working fine before, but are not now.

Sorry, I should have explained it more. I had 186 To Do items in the Mail To Do section that were working fine before I installed Snow Leopard (I was able to mark them complete or incomplete, rename, and edit them). After installing Snow Leopard, half of them are grayed out and half of them are working correctly. I am unable to mark the grayed out To Do items complete, or rename or edit them. The To Do items that are grayed out are random, like, it's not all of the complete ones, or all of the ones that are in a month or so.
    Here is a screenshot: http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/4743/screenshotgh.png
I know it's not the biggest deal, I just used to use Mail as my To Do thing If you know of a better app for the kinds of To Dos you see in the screenshot, let me know

  • Password not saved in PowerPivot 2012

    Hi
We facing problems using the 2012 version of PowerPivot. The password for the connection to SQL Server is not saved anymore! We previous used the 2008 version without any problem, now we want to upgrade to 2012 but this issue is holding this.
We use PowerPivot as an offline version and users update there data by refresing the powerpivot. When done in 2012 version, the user is asked to enter the password for the SQL connection. We can't have endusers to enter the PW. It might be reported as a
bug in 2012 already but no solution yet.
    Anybody?
    Thanks

    Hi Bertil,
It seems you encountered the similar issue in the thread below:
SQL Server Authentication connection don't retain password in PowerPivot for Excel 2010:

I have tried to reproduce this issue using Excel 2010 and Excel 2013 again SQL 2008R2 and SQL 2012, but everything were fine. If you can provide the following detail information to us, I will reproduce it again and help you to solve this issue.
Could you please share the detail steps to reproduce this issue?
What're the specific versions of SQL Server and PowerPivot for Excel?

  • Passwords not saved

When I enter a user name and password, Safari usually asks if I want to remember it, or gives me the option "Never for this site." How do I know what it is set to do? If I click never, do I just never ever have the option to save a password again? How do I check if this site isn't saving my password just because I accidentally told it not to?
I'm suspicious because this site doesn't save my info and it's REALLY annoying. I've looked at the source and there are no autocomplete=off tags or anything, so it should be saving my info.
I think maybe it isn't being saved just because it isn't a username and password (it's a first name/last name and password). ...but shouldn't it be able to save the form field data somehow?
GRRRAWRRR!! I'm so frustrated. There must be SOME way to make Safari save my information!
...so yeah, how do I check if it's set to try and remember passwords, or if it's just "never for this site" going to remember. ...and how do I reverse that setting?
ALSO.... changing browsers is out of the question. ;D

I've had the same problem and it has everything to do with Code Signing: the way Mac OS X checks if applications can have access to secret data (in Keychain Access). Safari uses this too and if Code Signing is somehow broken; strange things happen with saving or not saving passwords.
You can check Code Signing for Safari in Terminal:
    codesign --verify --verbose /Applications/Safari.app
...If the result is different from:
    /Applications/Safari.app: valid on disk
    /Applications/Safari.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement
    ...then something is wrong.
There are complex ways to change the Safari code signing, so just take the easy way: just put your Safari application in the trash and copy the complete (working) Safari application from another Mac (with the same version number) to yours (or from a Time Capsule version of Safari from the period everything was nice and easy).
After starting the copied version of Safari, Keychain Access will ask you for permission. Choose "always" and you're problem is fixed!
It did the trick for me after Googling and troubleshooting for hours...
