  • Exchange vs. Outlook Sync for Calendar/Contacts

I currently sync my iPhone with Outlook 2007 calendar and contacts, and (with the notable exception of the 9.1 fiasco) it has been great.
This week, they migrated us to an Exchange server. I'm still syncing via USB (everything stayed with the same name in Outlook, so iTunes was fine) but am considering switching to Exchange for contacts and calendar (I don't use the email address on the exchange server on my iPhone - long story).
What I was hoping for is to find someone who has more familiarity with Exchange on iPhone to answer a few questions.
    1. If I setup Exchange on the iPhone, that means contact/calendar changes made in Outlook (to the exchange account) automatically update on the iPhone, right? Can I control how often this update happens? Does it use heavy data amounts every time, or just the updates? (In other words, if I add a phone number to a contact, does it send my whole contact list, or just that contact?)
    2. Is there any harm in leaving iTunes configured to sync to Outlook? Logically, it's syncing the same data (like I said, the pointers are to the exchange items), so I can't see if there's a reason to remove it. But at the same time, I don't want to mess up my contacts/calendar by leaving it on.
Any help or advice anyone can offer would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think I can answer your first question (assuming you're on iOS 4.0.1 like me
When using Exchange ActiveSync on the iPhone, you can independently set which of the following you want to sync: Mail, Contacts, Calendars. This means you could choose to sync mail and calendars, but not contacts (or any other combination of 1, 2, or all 3 services).
I have all 3 set to sync, and I find that any change I make to my inbox, contacts, or calendar, in either Outlook 2007 or on the phone itself, is generally synced the other direction within 30 seconds (sometimes as fast as 5 or 10 seconds). While I haven't done a controlled test of the data transmitted for each sync, I would be very surprised if it sends anything other than the actual changes.
So far, my experience with ActiveSync on the iPhone (for all of 2 weeks) has been quite positive. I can only think of 2 problems:
    1. When a meeting reminder displays on the phone, it gives me all 3 buttons (Accept, Reject, or Maybe) even though I had already accepted the invitation when I first added the meeting to my calendar.
    2. When adding an event to the calendar on the iPhone, it always sets the status to "Busy", even if I marked it as Free. I have to edit the event and re-save to get the status corrected.
    Hope this helps.

  • .  It's not clear to me if the default sync for calendar is the iphone or my mac (shows 82 modifications).  I want it to default to the mac but the wording suggests the iphone.  Also, I don't see any way to do the syncy

I'm having trouble with a sync alert.  It's not clear to me if the default sync for calendar is my iphone (3G) or my mac (shows 82 modifications).  I want it to default to the mac but the wording suggests the iphone.  Anybody know the default device and if it can be and if the other can be selected if desired
Also, I don't see any way to do the sync on an individual entry basis for calendar.  Looks like it will only do all of them at once.  I'd like to go through them one by one to confirm which entry is correct.
    Thanks

Maybe you should get new friends.
I'm not sure that recovery mode works when you have to trust the computer, but did you try it?

If that won't work, perhaps you can use Find my iPhone from a computer in your iCloud.com account to erase the device.

This has nothing to do with the Find my iPhone app being installed on the phone, but you do have to have Find my iPhone activated in the iCloud settings on the phone.

  • Outlook Sync - Multiple Calendar Problem

(I am not sure whether this belongs in this Forum or would be more appropriately directed to my Device (Curve 8900) forum or Desktop Software.  Please advise or re-direct if that is the case.)
I am having a sync issue with Outlook, and it revolves around the issue of having multiple calendars on the Device, each of which is associated with an e-mail address.  I understand this has been a relatively common question; however, although I admittedly may be looking in the wrong place, I have yet to come across a comprehensive solution.
I understand how to switch the "default" e-mail associated with scheduling items on the calendar, and I believe I'm correct in thinking that this is what syncs with Outlook.  I've noticed that when I try switching the default, Outlook wants to delete all other appointments which are NOT associated with that device calendar.
So I guess my specific questions are:
    1) Is there a way to have Outlook sync with ALL calendars on the device, i.e. not just the default?  It's easy enough to make all appointments from here on out with a single account & have that be the one that syncs; however, it doesn't seem possible to do that without having Outlook want to delete all other appointments.
    2) Is there a way to change the associated email/calendar for events on the Device?  When I open an event, I can see which email/calendar it is but I don't know how to *change* it -- I only seem to have a choice when scheduling new events.
If either of these was an option, I think that would solve my problem -- I could either go through the device & convert everything to the default email/calendar & everything would be there upon sync, OR Outlook would just pick up everything from all calendars when I sync.
I don't understand why it's so complicated to have everything in one place!
Thanks in advance to those willing to share their wisdom & advice in this matter.

I was going to post that article but you beat me to it.
I believe this is the only way to accomplish this on a BlackBerry

  • Outlook Sync (Contacts/Calendar) Issues - Progress today........

    Folks,
I posted another earlier discussion on this topic over the weekend, but since I got my iPhone on Friday, I have probably burned about 20 hours working trying to figure out why I cannot sync my calendar and contacts from Office 2003 "OR" 2007 into my iPhone. When I started this process, 584 of my 1310 contacts did sync, I had NO luck on getting any of calendar items to sync.
Today we resolved the Contact issue!!! Still working on the calendar issues and if anyone has any further ideas, I am open to it, but it appears for both the contacts and calendar issues, I had corrupt data. You dont know it until encounter it this way.
Here is what you need to do in order to get the contacts to sync, it worked for me, hopefully it will work for many after me:
    1. Export "ALL" of your contacts to a .CSV (Comma Separated Value for Windows) file. Just export them to your desktop or somewhere easy to find them. As an extra safety net to ensure you dont lose your contacts, back them up also to a .XLS file as well as a .PST file.
    2. Delete "ALL" your contacts out of Outlook. Sync Outlook, especially if your like me and have your contacts and calendar on a corporate exchange server. Be sure you clear your iPhone so there is no contacts on it.
    3. Import the .CSV file to a VCARD file, sync to your coporate server, sync your iTunes and you should now see all your contacts.
Again, it worked for me and hopefully it works for you.
    Good Luck!!

Dell D420 running Win XP   Windows XP Pro

    Everyone is waiting for this.
Right now you cannot sync locally between your phone and your desktop. You are forced to upload your contacts to another company's server (read "the cloud") and then download them from whatever device you didn't upload them from.
Still waiting for this fix please.

  • Cannot connect iCloud and Outlook 2013 for Calendar, Mail, and Contacts

I have to re-establish my Outlook so my iPhone 5 can get my Windows 7 emails.  I have reduced my data to almost nothing, bare minimum and I continually get an "exceeded the maximum number of 25000 allowed events and tasks"  message; any suggestions?

    Hi engineer53,
I have an article for you that can help explain the source of that message:
iCloud: Limits for Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Bookmarks

In order to resolve this issue, you may need to turn off iCloud syncing for Outlook, adjust the number of events and tasks in Outlook, then resume syncing. Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

  • Desktop sync for calendar

    Hi everyone.
This is my first post.  I have a user who is connected through wireless sync through the BES but he wants to be setup to sync his calendar from his pc since he is connected to the domain through a vpn tunnel.  Everytime I set his handheld to disable wireless sync for the calendar it works, but when I hook it up to the machine and configure the sync options for the calendar it doesnt work.  It says it is disabling it because wireless sync is configured.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

So you go into the Calendar Options and set the wireless sync to No, and it still gives you that error?
Can you try first starting by leaving the BlackBerry disconnected from the computer, then changing the setting to No, then do into the Desktop Manager and make the change?

  • Any new thoughts on local sync for calendars

Any new ideas on how to achieve local sync for iOS devices under Mavericks? I am still not comfortable with using iCloud and would prefer to manage my data on my own. I am aware of options like setting up your own local wifi server and am intrigued by the 'devicesync' app on the app store. Anything else out there or do you know of anyone working on a solution to this 'feature'? Thanks and happy holidays to all.
    Marc

Hi nbar, and thanks for your reply. Apologies in advance if it appears that I'm getting on my 'high horse', as the saying goes.
First off, I'm not a power user....I've got a very simple set up with a 4 year old MacBook Pro. When I do my work I do it on systems purpose-built for editing or graphics work. This gripe is strictly about how my personal devices function.
I have a couple of issues. The primary is ownership of my data. I simply do not trust Apple anymore. The ease with which services like Facebook or Google rewrite their licenseing agreements without, it seems, a thought to their end users, leads me to believe that given enough time Apple will begin mining any data that you or I store in iCloud. This is my data and Apple has no right to scan it or use it in any way whatsoever.
Secondly, I don't appreciate being pushed into a 'service' that I do not want. I don't need iCloud to do my business or to live my interconnected life. Besides, in this day and age, 5gb is pretty paltry in terms of storage; after that I get the privilege of paying a monthly fee for more space.
Third, committing to the cloud means that any interconnected device that I have will use up more bandwidth on my data plan. If I have three or four devices connected to the cloud then every time I download something from iTunes it uses up 3-4 times the original bandwidth as the file is spread across my devices.
Fourth, and most disappointing, Apple was not very candid about the loss of local sync when Mavericks was rolled out. True, in the developer or beta testing community this may have been perfectly clear but to us 'regular' end users there was no real warning. I find this most disheartening as I bought in to the Apple brand as the anti-corporate, anti-Microsoft, maverick (yes, I said Maverick ). This episode, for better of for worse, has soured me somewhat on the brand. And by the looks of it on-line and on these discussion groups, I'm not alone in this perception. This feels more like a blatant play for dollars and less about providing new feature sets to end users.
There are a lot of reasons why the cloud is good for some people and for certain types of activities. And I'm not naive enough to think that my data is perfectly safe and is not already floating out there somewhere. However, to the extent that I can, I simply want to be able to choose where my data goes and who I trust to handle it. Apple took away my cheese and I want it back!
Thanks again for the feedback. You've been very polite to read my rant. Have a great New Year.

  • Outlook sync problem : calendar is not complete...

    Hi all,
i have connected and synchronized my Ipod Touch with Outlook2003 SP3, under XP PRO, Itunes version 7.4. Contacts are ok, but my appointments on calendar are not all synchronized.
For example, today i have 4 meetings on Outloo, only one is present on the touch. The 2 meetings for tomorrow are all present...
I have tried to repair my pst file, but the result is the same.
    Can anyone help me ?
    Thank you

    Finally, It WORKS !!!
    I followed instructions from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306666
I have removed an application (Genesys Meeting Center) that causes problems with syncing (it works for my Pocket PC but not for Itouch...). I have never seen until yesterday that new default class value for my meetings was "IPM.MeetingCenter"...
I have deleted each appointment then created same again to obtain a class "IPM.Appointment". I change also my PST file in Outlook properties (changing default value "when publicating" to IPM.Appointment).
And now it works. I can't use Genesys but i can synchronize ;-)))
    Thank you for your support.

  • Outlook Sync issue - Calendar Note Field not synci...

    Hello
    I recently bough a 6233.
Very happy with the phone BUT for one issue.
I work from two offices and planned to use the phone to carry meeting & appointment data between two computers (syncing both).
When I sync with outlook the large notes field at the bottom of each calendar item is not synchronised. This imho is a vital field.
Searching this forum, I have noticed quite a few others with the same problem. Has this been fixed/rectified?

    Hi,
I am just wondering if anything has changed in the year or so since the last posting?
I have recently bought an E61i and I am seeing similar behaviour when I try synchronising with Outlook 2003. I have the latest PC suite installed.
    To be more precise:
I can create a notes entry in the calendar item on my PC. It WILL sync to the E61i. But if I edit that field on the E61, it WILL NOT sync back to the PC.
Interestingly though, I can create a fresh calendar entry, put something in the description field and that will sync to the PC. I can edit that on the PC and it will sync back to the E61i. But if I then change it on the E61i it WILL NOT sync back to the PC.
Note that I can change other calendar attributes (eg the meeting time) and that always syncs correctly. It's just the notes that behave this way.
I get the same same behaviour for contacts. I can change someone's phone number on the PC or E61i and it will sync to the other. But changes to the notes field only sync from the PC to the E61i.
Lastly, the story is the same for Outlook notes.
My next step would be a remove/re-install in case something happened. (I used to be using Microsoft ActiveSync for my WM5 device - with the E61i replaced - so maybe there's something left over from that). But before I did that, I wanted to check to see if what I am seeing is expected (ie consistent with others).
    Thanks

  • Outlook Plugin for Calendar Server

Has any recent progress been made on this..?
Or perhaps there is a "payable" plugin alternative that I've missed out on..?
Now that Apple has the Exchange / iPhone coding almost wrapped up, perhaps they will be offering their loyal OS X Server Admins an Outlook Plugin, or is that wishful thinking..?
To be honest, the fact they haven't offered it indicates their "seriousness" level in moving forward in the Enterprise market with 10.5.x
All I want(ed) was a working Calendaring solution, which doesn't involve converting an entire business to Macs, ... ensuring everyone you invite "lives" in your Company, ... and that no one needs to wirelessly sync their iPhone iCal over the air!
When are we going to get a WORKING solution Apple..????? Really, ... when????
    Cheers,
    Steve

I agree. It makes no sense whatsoever to release iCal with no Outlook connector unless you never intended to do that or you want everyone to work out the bugs before a "real" release. I have an organization that I would love to move off of Exchange, but can't because they love Outlook. I can't even get an answer from anyone as to what to use besides Outlook, if I could get them on Neooffice or something else.

  • Sync with Outlook ONLY for a specific date range

I have a Zire 31 that I'm syncing with Outlook via latest Palm Desktop/HotSync.   I did just install the latest conduit.
I was getting several repeating calendar entries that were not syncing with the Zire (annual birthdays, etc.) - turns out that they did not have an "end-date" specified when created in Outlook.  Creating an end-date solved the problem.
However - I would like to know if it is possible to specify a certain date range for the device to sync (e.g., sync calendar only for years 2007 through 2050, or in other words sync from 1 year ago to 50 years in future, etc...)
I recall specifying this once years ago, but I may have been using a third party to sync with Lotus Notes at the time.  I'm wondering if this option is also available with syncing directly with Outlook using HotSync???  I can't imagine it's not, but I can't find where you specify it.
One more interesting note:  while my Zire 31 had issues syncing those repeating calendar entries - my much older HandSpring Visor Deluxe syncs them no problem!  Go figure.
    Thanks much -
    Post relates to: Zire 31

I'm not actually looking to purge old items.
Rather - I would like to ONLY sync calendar entries between a specified range of dates.  For example - ONLY sync for calendar entries between Jan 1 2007 and Jan 1, 2050.
the problem is that I have some repeating entries (birthdays, etc.) that are set up in Outlook with no end date.  Apparently Palm/HotSync is having trouble syncing these (they don't show up at all - for any year.)
One resolution is to apply an end-date for each repeating calendar entry.  However, this is just another step my wife needs to remember to do.  If you happen to forget to to this, then Hotsync will ignore that entry.  Fine if you realize that's happening, but if you forget and forget to check - you won't even know it didn't sync!
The other possible resolution is to only have HotSync sync for a SPECIFIC date range - one that does not presumably go to infinity.  That is my question - how does one sync ONLY for a specific date range.  Has nothing to do with purging old entries.
    Thanks!!
