OutOfMemory exception on device with 2mb memory

Hi all
I have experienced the following problem.
The application I have developed works fine on a sonyerricson w800i but gives outofmemory on a nokia 6131
The se800 reports 1048572 bytes available memory (1mb)
The nokia 6131 reports 2097152 bytes available memory (2mb)
For debugging purposed I do a System.gc() and report free memory, on average the se800 has 77% free whereas the nokia starts with 55% free and it degrades quickly.
Its the same application and code so does this mean the nokia has a problem? It is my code that is at fault?
When I first encountered outOfMemory exception I followed some guidelines removing any inner classes dereferencing object by obj = null and making sure I close streams etc, this helped with general memory consumption. I tested it with the emulator limiting memory to 400k and I have an average of 20% free.
I suspected the screensize to play a role as I paint the canvas manually but on the emulator I use the defaultcolorphone which has a larger screen than the nokia.
Where could the problem lie?
GX

Hi MelGohan
Thanks for your reply. In order to test how much free memory I am using the following method:
    public static String getFreeMem()
        System.gc();
        long tot = Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory();
        long free = Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory();
        int per = (int)(((float)free / (float)tot) * 100);
        String s = gx.Utils.padString(String.valueOf(free), -8, " ") + " " + gx.Utils.padString(String.valueOf(per), -3, " ") + "%" + " / " + String.valueOf(tot);
        return s;
    }There are no other applications in memory as I tried restarting the phone and the results were the same hence I can see exactly how much memory is available (2097152 bytes) and how much is free/used.
On the emulator and the sony erricson the memory usage is stable whereas the nokia keeps using more and more, I am currently setting all unused objects = null when done using them but have found no difference so far.
I have put the same post on the nokia boards and there is more info there:

  • HT1535 sync devices with different memory

    I have an iPod and an iPhone. My iPod has more memory than my iPhone and is able to sync all music from my iTunes folder.
    My iPhone has less memory and only syncs part of my iTunes library, then doesn't download the rest.
    How can I manage what music is synced to my iPhone, without it impacting my iPod (where I want it to sync all)?

    Create a playlist that is used to sync with the iPhone, and manage its content to use no more than the available device memory.

  • My Mac Mini will charge - but not sync with - USB-connected devices (ipod, camera, memory card reader). How do I fix it?

    My Mac Mini will charge - but not sync with - USB-connected devices (ipod, camera, memory card reader). I have tried unplugging the devices, restarting the computer, selectively unplugging and plugging in the devices, closing and opening the relevant applications (iTunes, iPhoto, etc). I have tried using different USB cables.
    It's like all of a sudden the synching service stopped functioning or recognizing these devices for some reason. The other ports work just fine (monitor).
    The only USB-connected external device that appears to be unaffected is the USB SuperDrive and it works on all the USB ports into which I plug it.
    How do I fix this?

    Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens or doesn't happen.

  • Java.lang outofmemory exception in IR

    Hi
       We are on XI 3.0 SP13 and involved in creating a message mapping. We have a big XCBL PO structure as the target - and while we do the mapping effort, every now and then, we get a java.lang outofmemory exception ( display error ) when we save the mapping.
    I notice that my CPU util is 100% and is taken up by javaw.exe.  I have a 1.6 G RAM desktop - but still face this problem. Any suggestions as to how to overcome this memory problem ? Am I missing any setting in my desktop ?? Or do we have to live with this problem since the target structure is a generic/big structure ??
    Thank you in advance for your time.

    Hi
    actually, this problem has nothing to do with the server at all. Also paging size and your desktop ram do not really matter. By default IB starts with the parameter -Xmx512M, what means that Java gets maximum 512M of RAM. You can change it saving JNLP file to your local file system and changing there this argument to -Xmx 800M or -Xmx 1024M.
    The second way is to reduce schema sizes. Usually there are a lot of "annotation" and "documentation" tags. They can be easily removed withoud damaging the mapping(the only problem that in design time you'll not see a documentation for fields). If you want to go this way, you can tell me and I'll find out how it can be done by some tool. Because we had this problem with other customers and as I remember there were some tool made for this purpose.
    Although it might help to install the latest SP, because there were made a number of changes to reduce a memory consumption for Message Mapping tool
    Best regards
    Dmitry

  • How to handle OutOfMemory Exception

    hi,
    I just want to know how to OutOfMemory Exception which I m getting in case of dealing with files. I m dealing with more than 250 files at a time and that too of almost 7 MB in size

    If your machine has enough memory, you should try telling the jvm that it is allowed to use more. Do this with paramters on your java call (there is also a place to set these if you use Forte or JBuilder)
    java -ms16m -mx64m
    -ms is the minimum memory size
    -mx is the max size, make this as big as your need and your machine can support
    see the docs for more info.

  • How do I associate a device with my Apple ID?

    I have an iPad and an iPhone.  I sync them with my iMac desktop computer, and never with any other.  I always use the same Apple ID.  As far as I know, it's the only one I have.
    Recently, I purchased an app using my iPad.  The next time I synced the iPad with the computer, I got an alert saying "The purchased item 'App' on the iPad
    'Etchemendy's iPad' could not be transferred to your iTunes library because you are not authorized for it on this computer."  The alert goes on, in fine print, to say, "To authorize this computer for items purchased from the iTunes Store, choose Store > Authorize This Computer."
    So I choose Store > Authorize This Computer, and I get a second alert saying, "This computer is already authorized."  A nifty little continuous loop that neatly precludes me from using the app on any device except the one I used to purchase it.
    But it gets better.  In stumbling around trying to figure out what's going on here, I accessed "My Account" using iTunes on my desktop computer (logging in with the same Apple ID I used to purchse the troublesome app).  When I click "Manage Devices," I arrive at a box that says, "These computers and devices are associated with your Apple ID for Automatic Downloads or to download previously purchased music, apps, and books..."  It then gives me a "list" showing just one device -- my iPhone.  The iPad is not shown here.  Neither is the desktop computer iTunes just told me is already authorized.  There's a button that says "Remove" next to the iPhone.  And two bigger buttons.  One says "Cancel" and the other says "Done."  There is no "add a device" option.
    So how to I associate a device with my Apple ID?  And, as a matter of fact, why aren't all the devices I registered using my Apple ID already associated with it?  I never had any of these problems till the big iOS system upgrade a few months ago.  Since which, my interactions with Apple have nearly all been nightmarish.  Apple obviously put the WAY wrong guy in charge of iOS development.
    Oh.  And BTW, when I look at the drop-down menu for choosing the "product" I'm having a problem with, only about half the devices registered with my Apple ID appear there.  And I have no clue what kind of iPad I currently have.  I have the warranty right in front of me, and all it says is "iPad WiFi 64GB Black." No doubt if I try to solve this using Apple phone support, I'll have to pay $20 to straighten out Apple's problem for them.  Which is why I'm here.

    My guess is you're using a long Apple ID and just omitted or mistyped a letter sometime, or something similar.
    Anyway, the way to recover is this:
    You cannot change ownership of the mistyped Apple ID to the correct one.  After all, the mistyped one purchased it.  However, you can authorize purchases from the mistyped Apple ID on your devices by doing Store > Authorize This Computer on iTunes on your computer, and enter the mistyped Apple ID and password.  Then sync again and you'll be all set.
    When you change computer (e.g., sell your current one and buy a replacement), you'll have to repeat this process.

  • If I buy an ipad 2 with more memory, can i transfer everything from my old ipad to the new one

    If I purchase an ipad 2  with more memory, can I transfer all the contents of the old ipad to the new one?

    You can backup your current iPad, and then restore the new iPad from that backup (a list of what is included in a backup is in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079 - it excludes music, videos, synced photos). As the backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their settings and content, for the restore to work completely you'll need all the relevant apps in your computer's iTunes library - otherwise the restore won't be able to install the apps and therefore their content (if you don't have the apps on your computer then you can re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519)
    Restoring onto a different device won't restore passwords so you'll need to enter your router and email passwords and any passwords stored on websites.

  • HT1688 HELP! My Iphone4 is filling up with unknown memory

    My iphone is filling up with unknown memory. If a delete an app or photos the unknown memory will take up that free space as well. This is my second iphone to do this. My computer has no viruses and I have reset my phone. The only thing i can think of that might have something to do with it is my SIM card.

    Thank You for responding,
       I didn't think SIM cards had to do with it either, but that's all I could come up with. Yes I have restored my phone as a new device. I didn't put any music or ringtones on it. After a few weeks it start filling up again. I clean my phone daily (deleting messages,clearing history, cookies, ect.) If it is corruption, then how did my previous iphone and this iphone have the same problem? Some days it will show I have free memory but most of the time it is showing full. The only way I can take pictures is through Facebook.....
    With my previous iphone I had apple support on the phone and on my computer trying to figure out the problem. Everything they instructed me to do would fix the problem (temporarily)  Eventually they sent me another iphone4, the one I have now. I set it up as a new device, it was fine for about 2months. Now it is doing the same thing.....

    Hi,
    As you are using WLS8.1 It means your JDK will be JDK1.4 and there is a Bug already available with JDK1.4 for the Same issue ... Please find the below link:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do;:YfiG?bug_id=4705373 (For Sun JDK1.4)
    AND

  • Exception consumes a lot of memory

    hi all,
    We are running a CORBA Server and multiple CORBA Clients. The server and client is developed using visibroker 4.11 for java using CORBA 2.3 specification and JBuilder 4.0.
    When the server throws Corba Exception, we find that the free memory is getting almost lost in 6 digits.
    Can we make the garbage collection much faster ? Do we have any way for it ?
    Thanks in Advance
    javashan

    What's the problem with free memory going down? The garbage collector will run before OutOfMemoryError is thrown, so you really don't need to concern yourself with the details of memory management... that's the whole point of garbage collection!

    My MacBook was wiped of all my music and everything else, and now my iTouch is the only device with my entire music database. My iTouch is old. (Version 6.1.6, Model number: MC547LL/A) Is there any way I can put all the music on my iTouch back onto my MacBook? I hate that I could lose my entire music library by dropping my iTouch in the toilet.
    I've tried to plug in my iTouch into my MacBook, but I can't seem to give the music-transfusion without subscribing to iTunes Match or just completely wiping my iTouch.
    PLEASE HELP MEEEEE

    Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a different setup you transfer the old library from a computer or a backup directly to the new setup, not the device to the library. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
    iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
    For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
