OVM in a classroom environment

Hi.
For my classes I use Ubuntu 9.04 64 bits and VMWare Server 2.0, and it works great. I make my VMs with the software I need ( mostly centos and Oracle stuff ).
I'm thinking of using Oracle VM since the templates are ready and the centralized management console can save me a lot of work.
Since the servers will be at the same time desktops I have some questions? hope you can help me.
There's a way of installing a Xserver + Gnome for using a VNC client, or SSH tunneling for connecting to local vmachines on the VM Server?
( I'm thinking in making a yum repos or something and update the servers for using em as X/VNC clients ).
The only way of connection to a VM is via VNC?
Regards
FJA

Hi, there must be a misunderstanding, or maybe it's just me not being able to get the needs of a teaching/classroom environment....
You say:
What I really want is use Oracle VM console to admin the VMs in each student desktopWell... To achieve this result, all you need is a desktop PC (windows, linux, whatever) for every student, with a browser onboard...
Sorry but I'm really lost.
This is how it should be, at least in my non-teacher mind:
(STUDENT) --> (DESKTOP PC (BROWSER)) --> (VM MANAGER MACHINE) --> (VM SERVER MACHINE (UBUNTU GUEST 01) (UBUNTU GUEST 02) (...))
Please note that the VM Manager Machine, which is the one where you connect via browser to get to the CONSOLE, can be a Virtual Machine itself, if necessary (e.g. you don't have a physical server available to use as VM manager).
Don't know if we can get to any conclusions... Let me know if the above can be useful to you or not.
Anyway, I agree with you that the docs could definitely be better...
Cheers

  • How do I delete old Pools and Servers from my OVM 3.1.1 environment

    I have a 3.1.1 OVM server with two clustered server pools. One works over NFS and the other over fibre to a NetApp SAN. The fibre one is a test environment at the moment. The pool volume and the stroage volume for the test Pool has been deleted from the SAN side :0(. I have therefore now got a pool with servers and virtual machines that cant be deleted because the storage is not present. How can I remove the OVS servers and delete the pool without affecting my other live pool. I have rebuilt one of the OVS servers and that is still getting picked up as the original even though it has a different name and ip address. I guess this is because it uses the hardware address somehow to recognise it. Any ideas?

  • New Windows 2008 guest will not start in OVM 3.0.3

    First off - seems I can't open an SR on MetaLink as the Oracle VM product isn't listed (even in the 'All Products' list)... any thoughts on that one?
    But here is the real problem I have...
    We are trying to create a Win Svr 2008 guest in our OVM 3.0.3 environment.
    On machine start, the job shows 'In Progress' and the server is shown as locked.
    If we try to open a console window, VNC fails with 'Connection Closed'
    I've tried setting "boot='d'" in the vm.cfg file however we still receive the same result.
    The host is an IBM x3650 M4 currently hosting 3 other Linux guests.
    The current vm.cfg contents are listed below.
    And what is the usbdevice='tablet' about? That's a new one on me...

  • OVM 3.1.1 iSCSI multipathing

    I am setting up an OVM 3.1.1 environment at a customer site who is presenting iSCSI LUNs from an EMC Filer. I have a few questions:
    * what is the proper way to discover a set of iSCSI LUNs when the storage unit has 4 unique IP addresses on 2 different VLAN's? If I discover all 4 paths, they present in the GUI as 4 separate SAN servers. The LUNs seem to show up scattered across all 4 SAN servers. By my simple logic, my thinking is that if I were to lose access to one of those SAN servers, that the LUNs that happen to be presented via that SAN server would disappear and not be accessible. I know this isn't the case however because multipath -ll on the OVM server shows me that there are 4 distinct paths to each LUN that I'm expecting to see- and I've verified that multipath is working by downing one of the two NICs that are allocated to iSCSI and I can see that two paths of four are failed, but I can still access the disk just fine. Is this just me not setting things up the right way in the GUI, or is the GUI implemented poorly here and needs to be redesigned so it's clear to both myself AND the customer?
    * has anyone used the storage connect plugins for either iSCSI or Fiber Channel storage with OVM? What does it actually do for you and is it easy or easier than unmanaged storage to implement? Is it worth the hassle?

    Here are the notes I had written down:
    == change iSCSI default timeout in /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf for any future connections ==

  • OVM 3.1.1 DR Configuration

    Hi.
    We have a business requirement to configure a DR site for our OVM 3.1.1 environment. Any of you dabbled with DR for OVM, if so how and what do we need to do to replicate the VM's from our production site to the DR site?
    Maybe I should have ask this fist, it is possible to have a DR site for OVM 3.1.1?
    Thanks.

    Greetings,
    I have had the opportunity to design, deploy and support dozens of Oracle VM DR solutions. Please consult my on-line book named the Oracle Cloud Cookbook, specifically the Oracle Cloud Reference Design chapter section "Oracle VM for x86 Disaster Recovery". I will post the link, although the forum moditator will most likly clip it :-)

  • How do I set up a film-making classroom using premier pro?

    I'm revamping my classroom. I've been using final cut, but that platform doesn't provide the model I need for preparing students anymore with their new versions final cut X. I teach students the Hollywood style of film-making and need a platform that mimics the professional standard. I'm using macs and want to teach with premier pro since it has the right interface for the job. How do I get a version I can use when it appears that adobe is going all out cloud? Will cloud suffice for my macs in a classroom environment? I'm wanting about three to five computers to have the software for students to access.

  • OVM P2V

    Hi guys.
    In a weeks' time I will have to migrate ovm's from an OVM 3.0.3 environment to a OVM 3.1.1 environment.
    I'm testing possible migration methods. So far my p2v of an ovm is not going as planned.
    I have attach the 3.1.1 OVMS iso to my 3.0.3 VM, changed the boot order so that it boots of the cdrom first.
    After booting my 3.0.3 vm I get the standard options to install , p2v or rescue.
    I the type p2v and press enter. The boot process continue as if the p2v process is in progress and then it just grinds to a halt.
    Have any of you successfully p2v (v2v) a ovm to another ovm environment?
    What is the best method of migrating OVM vm's to another OVM environment?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Class environment teaching David Powers Training from the  Source with PHP questions?

    Community College classroom environment
    Graphics Technology Degree (Creatives combating code)
    Window 7 operating system
    Second time working with the book within my class and having difficulties again. Not a problem with the book or tutorials, but the class setup. First semester working with the book XAMPP was the problem. Students working  between the classroom, computer lab and home had many difficulties with the Localhost between locations. Too many problems XAMPP problems (in too many folders) for me solve. This semester I tried a third party Host. This worked well through the restyling of wordpress but we hit the wall at mysqladmin and databases. Each student has a subdomain who's mysql database is not allowed to be accessed except from within the providers control panel. Access is denied from Dreamweaver.
    Hope there is someone who has a suggestion.
    Thanks
    Bob Canger
    Graphics Instructor.

    If you used a VPS with WHM (web host manager)/cPanel you could provide each student with FTP and cPanel account access, which would give them phpMyadmin access. This would also be more like the "real world" in that each student would have root access to their own account. They would not all be sharing an account. As administrator you would have access to all the accounts, but the students would not have access to each other's.

  • OVM Server or Virtual BOX

    Which product (OVM server or Virtual BOX) has a better perfomance, flexibility and reliability?

    Hi,
    well both products actually have a totally different focus:
    OVM is a "Server Visualization Product", which means it is a bare metal hypervisor directly installed on hardware, whereas Virtual Box is a "Desktop Visualization Product", which runs on top of an already installed OS.
    Main Focus of Virtual Box is for testing and developing, not for production systems. Main Focus for OVM is definitely production environment (but may be used for deploying test and development systems).
    It's in the defintiion, that OVM server has a better performance and reliability, because it is not installed on top of another OS. Virtual Box can only be so reliable as the underlying OS.
    So if you run it on top of Windows.... decide yourself ;)

  • Problems with Dreamweaver Add-ons being installed in Adobe CC 2014 - OSX 10.9.5?

    I have tried to install two add-ons (Photo Gallery for DW and Adv CSS Menu Light) for Dreamweaver CC 2014, but I receive an error notification, stating that they are incompatible with installed Adobe applications.  Both of these add-ons state that they are compatible with Adobe CC 2014, which is what is installed.  I am logged in with an administrator account.  File Sync is turned on.  I have Adobe CC Desktop App 1.9.1.474 which appears to be the latest version.  This is on a iMac 27" Mid 2011 running OSX 10.9.5.  All available system updates have been applied.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the add-ons several times with the same result, on seven different computers of the same build/image.  This is in a classroom environment.  Any recommendations on additional things to try?  Any help is much appreciated!

    More info:  I tried using the Extension Manager CC to get these extensions installed and they each failed out.  One stating that the extension required version 8 or greater of Dreamweaver and the other version 9 or greater.  It would seem to me that, for some reason, either Adobe or the system is not reading the version information correctly of Dreamweaver 2014 which is installed on these workstations.

  • SQL Developer and Blocking View of Other Users' Objects

    I am using SQL Developer in a classroom environment. My student users can “see” Other Users objects. They cannot modify, but none the less can see the structure and data.
    I only want the users to be able to see their own objects. Is there a privilege that needs to be revoked? (In using SQL Plus command line, this was not a problem.)
    Thanks.
    -Karen

    Karen,
    From sysdba account (sys/system). Run following and verify for that particular user grant is revoked. May be exit from sql developer and log back in or refresh view.
    YOu can also potenially revoke all the privs from all non admin uses i.e.r even connect/resource roles and grant them back.
    revoke select any table from yourschemaname;
    revoke connect from schemaname;
    revoke create session from  schemaname;
    revoke resource from schemaname;
    Then just grant privs as need basis
    grant connect to schemanme;
    grant resource to schemaname;
    grant create session to schemaname;

  • Lion Server with PCs on Network

    This setup would be a Mac mini running OS X Lion Server serving only PCs.
    Anyone have experience and comments/suggestions on using Lion Server to serve PCs in a classroom environment? (Small school)
    What do you do about virus protection for PCs? Local installation on each?
    What additional software would you recommend for this type of setup?
    Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

    My office has 4 Macs and 3 PC's. We use a Mac Mini running Lion Server. The Sharing of files and assigning users and permissions is no problem. However, because I run just 3 PCs I have each with their own Anti-virus and their own backup software, backing up to a shared drive on the server.

  • Disable Auto Update in Acrobat Professional 9 for OS X

    We have a series of installations in a lab/classroom environment where we would like to disable the autoupdate feature of Acrobat Professional 9. Currently when a new user logs in the autoupdater wil launch telling the user that there's a new update available. That's great and all except that a) most users are not admins and couldn't do the update any way, b) we use Sassafras Keyserver and updating the App with IT will cause the keyserver functionality to stop which would then make us fall out of compliance with licensing, c) IT likes to make sure that ALL users are on the same version which means that we need to control when and how updates are installed.
    Is there any way to do this and then have the settings propagate to all users?

    Hi,
    There's no machine level setting to disable ARM for all users in MAC.
    However, you could set the update mode to manual using Edit->Preferences->Do not automatically download or install updates. This has to be done by each user since the setting is user specific.
    Hope this helps.
    Also, I have a small query. When Acrobat\Reader  installed as an admin is launched for a non-admin user, it requires admin credentials on first launch. Since most of your users are non-admin, how are they able to launch Acrobat\reader wihtout providing admin passwords?
