OVS servers restart when iSCSI target restarts

Long story short, I've been working on my new lab at home off and on.  Tonight I was working on my lab to get to the point where I would have OVMM as a virtual machine as the dedicated host I have for temporary measures only has two gigs of ram vs the recommended 8 gigs of ram.
More to the point:  I was working on the storage portion of my setup and I got my iSCSI target discovered (FreeNAS 9.3) and I was able to build my cluster of OVSs.  I noticed earlier that my FreeNAS server had some pending updates and I figured it would be a good idea to perform these updates before I started using the iSCSI storage for active virtual machines.  Naturally, when the updates are done on my FreeNAS server, it reboots.
What I don't understand is why both of my OVSs restarted at the same time after the FreeNAS server went down for a reboot.  Was there a hidden gotcha?  Did I overlook something in the documentation?
A side effect of the unexpected reboot is the fact that my OVS(2) did not come back online with OVMM and I could not ping my management interface for that OVS.  I did several Google searches and tried some manual up/downs of the interfaces and tried one effort to manually configure bond0 to an IP address to try and get some sort of response.  Needless to say, none of those were good ideas and didn't help.  Therefore, I'm re-installing OVS on server 2 now.
If anyone has any ideas as to how I could have fixed OVS(2) I'm more than willing to take notes in case this happens again.
Thank you for any and all help,
Brendan
P.S. If this has any influence with my situation, I am running LACP bonds and all IP addresses are configured on the VLAN interfaces.  I have not had any issues configuring my switch and with the exception of OVS(2) not wanting to reply after the unexpected restart I had everything working.  An added gotcha is that the storage VLAN interface on OVS(2) continued to reply after the restart.

Hi Brendan,
the situation you encountered is expected for a single-headed iSCSI target. If you present OVM with a LUN - regardless if it's iSCSI or FC, OVM creates an OCFS2 volume on it, when you choose that LUN to be used as a storage repository. This is, since OCFS2 is a cluster-aware file system and thus is the only supported fs to use for a cluster setup. Now, although OVFS2 is really easy to setup - compared to other cluster file systems - it has some mechanics that will cause your nodes to fence (or reboot) in case the node looses "contact" with the OCFS2. Each node writes little keep-alive fragments onto the OCSF2 and if you reboot your iSCSI target, then this will cease and OCFS2 will fence itself, hoping for some minor glitch that may be gone after a reboot.
There are a couple of ways to achieve this with iSCSI, but their resp. setup is not easy, and the hoops to jump through are probably to many for a lab setup. E.g. I am running a two RAC nodes as iSCST targets, which in turn do have high-redundancy disk setup behind them, consiting of 3 seperate storage servers. So, in my setup I am able to survive:
- two storage node failures
- one RAC node failure (which provides the iSCSI target for my OVS)
Regarding your OVS2, as you have already re-installed OVS2, there will be now way, to tell, what went wrong with it, as you'd need access to the console to poke around a bit, while OVS2 is in that situation, where it doesn't respond to pings on it's management interface.
Cheers,
budy

  • My Windows 2012 ISCSI Target service needs to be restarted every time the server starts.

Every time I restart my Windows 2012 server, the ISCSI Target Service is unavailable to the clients even though it appears to be running.
I have to restart the service, then the clients can connect to it.
I tried to change the startup Type to Delayed, but I get an error 87: parameter is incorrect.
I've tried to delete and recreate the VHD and ISCSI Target.
I've tried to uninstall the Role, and reinstall it.
Anybody have any additional ideas to try and troubleshoot this?
    Thank you
    James Roper

The service is not starting correctly, even though it does start. If I restart the service, everything works correctly. Here is the event in the ISCSI Target.

  • Multiple Hyper-V 2012 R2 servers to access a since ISCSI target

A couple years ago the community helped me configure a CentOS file server to connect to my VMWare and HyperV Servers for the purpose of backup. At the time I created 2 LVM devices, one to connect to Esxi via NFS, and one to connect to HV via ISCSI. This has worked GREAT!I have converted almost all my production environment to HV. I had to of course rebuild the arrays and make the larger one ISCSI rather than NFS. I just noticed that file the file structure of the connected HV drives is not the same. I have (3) HV Servers connected to the same ISCSI target which resides on the CentOS file server. When you view the connected drives, the same target has different files on it from different HV Hosts. Prior to rebuilding the arrays, the ISCSI target worked as intended. I suspect that I missed a step during the rebuild. The drives were...

    Hello,
I have installed VMM 2012 R2, this is also not allowing me to add and manage Server 2012 R2 hosts. However it is perfectly able to manage Server 2008 host.
It gives following error when tried to add Server 2012 R2 hosts:
    Error (2916)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent windows2012.test.com was lost.
WinRM: URL: [http://windows2012.test.com:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [Associate], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/scvmm/AgentManagement]
    Unknown error (0x80338012)
    Recommended Action
Ensure that the WS-Management service and the agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic.
This problem can also be caused by WMI service crash. Ensure that KB 982293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982293) is installed on the machine if it is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
If the error persists, reboot windows2012.test.com and then try the operation again.
    Any suggestions please?

  • I'm suddenly getting the kernel panic message and constant restarts when connected to the time machine wireless network. if is switch to the BT network, all fine. no help found so far as to what's wrong or how to correct, anyone have any thoughts...

Recently upgraded to mountain lion in order to buy the new tall tower for time machine backups. had to get technical support to help with set up as it wouldn't play ball with two computers. all working fine up until last week when the iMac started getting backup error messages. then system restarts independently when using time machine on the time machine wireless network. only stops restarting when I switch the wireless network back to he bt one, which is a pain obviously as can't back up to time machine then.  it has to be a problem with airport utility or something wireless but all says all up to date with software etc. all still works fine backing up from laptop on the wireless network, just the iMac is not happy. any help or thoughts very much appreciated.

Hi, many thanks Bob, what you say is not unthinkable at all, although it does answer the question
"what could I do *instead* of ..." rather than the one I actually asked, but seriously ...
Shutting down might be an answer, although it would clear out my tmp directory - which I might not want to have to sort through looking for things I want to save every time I go to work, and also, now that nvram doesn't seem to work for disabling the boot chime, it can get a bit embarassing booting up in a busy meeting if I have forgotten to mute before I shut down. There are all sorts of other issues, such as editing documents, loading web pages and so on that I would have to set up again.
Your suggestion of letting Apple know is a good one - thank you for the link.
    Take care,
    Mark

My Imac is showing gray screen with red line when booting and restart again, I can load it in windows 7 safe mode with red lines across the display, pls help

The graphic card is damaged. You can't do anything more than taking your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and getting your graphic card replaced.
Sometimes, when the graphic card is damaged, operating systems can't start. That's caused because the drivers that make the graphic card work detect an error, telling the operating system that the graphic card is unusable, so the operating system can't start and it restarts. However, you can start in safe mode because operating systems use a basic driver in this startup mode

You need to connect to iTunes and restore.

You may need to put the device into recovery mode, this is covered in the link on this page.
Did you back up the device?

  • IPod restarts when syncing music

My iPod restarts when its in the middle of syncing music. Sometimes it just restarts and other times it says the required folder cannot be found. Can anyone help me?

Plug your iPod into your computer and once iTunes open go to the iPod preference plane on the source list. There is the option to restore your iPod. Restoring means to erase your iPod completely and reinstall a new software on it. So if you have any files in your iPod that you don't have on your computer, back them up before you do the restoring. Otherwise, proceed with the restore (You need internet connection to do the restore). You should be fine after restoring it.

  • Centro restarts when navigating through photos

I purchased my Centro a couple of months ago.  Recently, the Centro has been restarting when navigating through photos I've taken using the Centro's camera.  It will also restart when I try to save a photo that has been sent to me via text message, or when I try to send a photo via text message.  I have cleaned out my previous text messages and deleted the message backup file on my computer.  I've also tried a soft reset and a system reset, but the same thing keeps happening.  As an aside, my husband bought his centro at the same time and he is not experiencing these issues.  Is there anything I can do, short of taking the phone back to Verizon?
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

Hello and thank you for using the Palm Help Forums!
Well, there are several things that can cause the device to reset.
One, corrupted data. If you have corrupted data on the device, when trying to access it, it can and most likely will, cause the device to reset.
Two, Low memory. If the device has low memory, the device will operate slow and most likely reset because it doesn't have a lot of free space. The free space remaining on the device is it's thinking room you could say. The smaller the thinking margin, the more likely it will not perfrom correctly. Best way to fix memory issues is to get an SD card and save all media files to the SD card.
Three, incompatible software. If there is incompatible 3rd party programs installed on the device this can cause several problems. Resets, missing data, and other functions not performing correctly.
The best thing I can recommend you do is a hard reset. A hard reset will erase all data on the device but restore all settings to default. Be sure to backup your data on a PC before performing a hard reset. For further information and instructions on how to do a hard reset go to kb.palm.com and look up article number 42094 in the solution ID search field.
I hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions or issues.

  • Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster - Netapp FAS6280 Black Screen on Restart when in cluster IGROUP

    Hello everyone,
I've been working on this issue for a month now and have tickets open with Netapp and Microsoft.  We have not been able to resolve the issue as of yet and since I'm losing all my hair I thought I should post it...
    Scenario:
    Two Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP Fail-Over Clusters (C1 & C2)
Two Netapp FAS6280 Filers for SAN storage
    8 DELL R815 servers w/ 2x QLE2562 8GB FC HBAs all paths used (9.1.9.47 - newer did not resolve)
Netapp DSM 4.0 & SnapManager 6.4.2 (we also tried 1 rev newer, 1 rev older without luck)
    C1 has 2 nodes & C2 has 4 nodes.
We are trying to add new nodes into the clusters.  We were originally on EMC Clariion arrays and have been migrated to the netapp.  Prior to moving we had 3 nodes in C2 and added node 4.
Now we want to add 2 more nodes, one to each cluster.  We were able to configure the OS and get everything installed and matching the other nodes.  we can assign HBAs to a test IGROUP and assign a lun, format it use it restart all is well and normal.
As soon as we change the HBAs to the IGROUP for C1 or C2's LUNs the servers don't want to restart properly.  They hang at a black screen.  The little green windows start splash screen runs the bar at the bottom.  it then is supposed to fade
out and come back with the grey screen saying starting windows but that doesn't always happen.  Sometimes it can take 4 hours to restart, or the machine will not come back onine at all.  The pre-existing nodes *do not* experience this issue.
They restart in 5-10 minutes without issue.
We know drivers are part of the issue, but the maddening part is that it all works fine until we try to add the HBAs to the existing cluster storage group.  We have a suggestion to create separate IGROUPs for each cluster node and add all luns to the
separate igroups.  We configured this on one node and it still restarts long.  We plan to modify the other nodes during our maintenance window and try again.
On the other cluster we were able to successfully complete the validate wizard and join.  everything fails over and works except the server does not come up upon restart.  If I unplug the HBAs it will come up fine, then I can plug them in and the
    cluster functions.
Does anyone have any other ideas for us to try?  Currently support for both netapp and Microsoft appear stumped.  Sunday is our Window and we plan to try reconfiguring but I'm losing optimism...
    Thanks for any feedback/ideas!
    -Ryan

Thanks everyone who looked at this and offered feedback.
The issue appears to be resolved after the configuration change suggested by Netapp support.
The originally recommended configuration for our storage migration was similar to how I've seen storage groups configured on EMC arrays in the past.  1 storage group / igroup with all hbas/initiators for each host in the WFC/SQL cluster added to this
group.  that group then gets all LUNs assigned to it.
The change in configuration that was recommended is to have 1 storage group / igroup for each host and put all initiators/hbas for each host in their own separate group.  Then assign the all LUNs to each of the individual host igroups.
There is a lack of documentation on this, but it appears to work.  We had 1 hit for separate igroups but had to go through a couple of support techs to get one to confirm this.
After applying this configuration in our change window today the issue is resolved.  we were able to fail all resources onto the new node and restart it without issue.  The question remaining for us is why the old systems continued to work while
the new nodes did not.  The old nodes were originally migrated off an EMC and the version of ONTapp at that time was 8.1.2 and they worked fine.
We had upgraded to 8.1.3 to resolve an issue with flash cache and it seems like machines that we tried to attach to this igroup after that time did not work.  all drivers software etc the same.  We are wondering if this is somehow related and have
    asked about it.
I wanted to update this thread, and perhaps it can save someone else some trouble down the line.

I tried to ask the people at Apple support what was going on. But they didn't seem to know. My system restarts when I try to open Itunes. It does it with the factory software I recieved with my 5g Ipod Video. It also does it with any updated version I install. If I reinstall Itunes the program works fine for about a day. Then it crashes my system again. Please help. I don't want to reinstall Itunes everyday in order to use it.
    compaq   Windows XP

Now I have the blue screen and this is the error message.
    * stop: 0x00000050 (0XBB9EA29E,0X00000000,0X8057DA81,0X00000002)
hmmmm. okay ... do you have an early version of Roxio CD Creator 5 installed on that PC?
i've seen this show up a few times. one of the early versions of Easy CD Creator 5 actually isn't compatible with XP:
Easy CD Creator 5.0 Does Not Function In Windows XP
... but sometimes the first time people know about this is when the PC starts throwing a 0x50 at them them they try to launch itunes or (of all things) plug in an ipod ...
if that doesn't seem to be a factor, another thing to try is vigorous spyware and virus scans (with fresh definitions). both haxdoor and sdbot can make PCs suddenly start throwing 0x50s after new software installs.
but if those turn up blank, let's try getting a minidump on the crash to the Discussions Hosts so they can throw it over the fence to the Apple Engineers for a look. (thanks to toonz for teaching me this one.)
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
And then send it to a Discussions Host. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.

  • Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep

    Hi everyone.
I just got a brand new Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz), and had Apple upgrade the RAM to 2GB (4 x 512MB). My first problem is that the computer always restarts when waking from sleep, which is annoying! I have reset the SMC by unplugging the machine for a minite, but the problem persists. I have also tried sleeping the computer with nothing plugged in except the monitor and keyboard/mouse, but I get the same problem. All software/firmware is fully up to date.
I have also just noticed that the System Profiler states that there is only 1GB RAM in the computer, even though I am sure that it recognised 2GB when I got the machine a fortnight ago (I even have a screen shot of 'about this mac' to prove it!). Can anybody help, or do I need to phone Apple support?
    Thanks,
    Matthew

  • Periodic error about contract when try to restart my NRPE daemon

    Hi everyone,
i have an embarrassing problem with my NRPE daemon on my solaris x86.
i am doing a lot of change in my NRPE configuration file and i always need to restart it.
sometimes, the restart didn't work and the services become "maintenance". Here is "/var/svc/log/network-cswnrpe:default.log":

[ Jun 24 15:29:00 Method or service exit timed out.  Killing contract 449 ]As my NRPE is doing a lot of check, i suspect that it appears when NRPE is doing a check (it's why this pb appears sometimes)
You can see that my stop method call "pkill -U nagios", it's because i have change that (before it was "kill"). I have try a lot of thing into the "stop" method but it always do the same thing.
So...before this pb, i have never heard about "contract" and i made my own research....if I understand my pb is that the contract of the NRPE process don't want to die....
i think that contract is faithfull, but this one is very annoying for me, and i see during my google research that this pb appears for several people and services....someone says that this is related to the parent process, and someone say that it's a configuration problem related to the XML of the SMF....
can someboy help me please? i can post the content of the /var/svc/manifest/network/nagios-nrpe.xml file or do a "ptree" if needed.
    thx by advance

Hi, anyone can help me for correctly manage this contract? (or going in other way...)
