OWB 10.2 to ODI migration

Hello All -
I have been trying to find some resources to migrate my existing OWB10.2 environment into ODI 11 but was unsuccessful. Is there any official document available which talks about migration of OWB10.2 to ODI11? I know there is a third party provider of OWB to ODI migration OWB2ODIConverter.com but I am more interested in official document from Oracle for a migration path. I have attended a session with Oracle around 2 yrs back where we talked about a unified ETL product merging OWB + ODI but I think it is still underway.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Arun

Hi there!
I'd like to know if someone can tell me if there is some problem if I want to "migrate" a mdl file from 10.2 to 11.2.
I mean: I've got a mdl file built in OWB 10.2, Is it possible to import it in OWB 11.2 without problem or not?
If the answer is no, what am I supposed to do for my need?
Thanks in advance
StevenThere are some patches to OWB that you will want to get if you are doing this...
http://blogs.oracle.com/warehousebuilder/2010/08/recommended_owb_patch_before_repository_upgrade_or_migration_9802120.html?goback=.gmp_140609.gde_140609_news_183727185
Your best option is to go to 11.2.0.2 if you can but otherwise get patch 9802120.

• While doing ODI migration what things are needed to be setup in Topology?

While doing ODI migration what things are needed to be setup in Topology manager ?
1.Like in Toplogy in file we hive file paths.
2. In Planning we set Logical schema .
Not sure about other things.
Hoping some can can help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Lots of things are defined in the topology manager - below is a simplified list
1) Physiccal Schemas the actual connection information / details related to any technology you plan to use in your ODI integration interfaces
2) Logical schema, abstracted version of the Physical schema which allows greater flexibility ad reuse across environments
3) Contexts - how you asssociate logical and physical schemas
4) Agents - manage the execution of ODI jobs
When you talk about migration, do you mean moving ODI objects between seperate environments such as Dev and Prod? If so you will need to ensure that all the technologies you use in Dev are present in Prod. The physical layer has been set up with all the correct connection details. Your logical scemas has been set up matching your configuration in the dev environment and you have used the contexts to associate the logical and physical layers as per your dev configuration.

• Migration of OWB Mappings in to ODI Interfaces

Hi Experts,
I have build some good amount of mappings in the OWB (oracle WarehouseBuilder) 11g and now i need to migrate all those in to Oracle Data Integrator 11.1.1.5 so my query is
1) Is it possible to migrate with out any additional migration tool, is so please let me know the steps of migration??
2) If it can be done only through any additional tool , what is that tool?? and process of migration using the tool.
Please do the needful. awaiting your inputs.
Many Thanks,
Pavan Kumar

Hi Pavan,
1) Unfortunately not. In its latest statement of direction, Oracle said that with ODI 12c, you will be able to execute and monitor OWB jobs. A migration utility will also be available at this time. But some manual work might be required as well. http://www.oracle.com/us/products/middleware/data-integration/odi-statement-of-direction-1922235.pdf
2) There is no tool for the moment. You can use groovy to automatize part of your migration and do the rest by hand. Here is a presentation by Michael Rainey : http://www.rittmanmead.com/files/ukoug2012_rainey_odi.pdf
Hope it helps.

• Are the OPH webservices/odi migrated to SOA FMW in the pip pmdm11.2?

To integrate OPH (Oracle Product Hub 12.1.3) with RODOD using AIA Pre-Built Integrations Product Master Data Management 11.1 I installed an OAC (Oracle Application Server) where has been deployed the OPH webservice:
PIMWebServices-ICC-WS
PIMWebServices-Item-WS
PIMWebServices-Valueset-WS
which working with the ODI10 that is deplojed in the same server.
My question is if for the new release 11.2 (about the integration of Oracle Product Hub 12.1.3 with Oracle Pre-Built Integrations Product Master Data Management 11.2) the webservices and ODI project have been migrated to the SOA FMW 11.1.1.6 platform or not?
If not have I to install a new version of PIMWebServices and ODI project or I can reuse the same released for 11.1?

• SUNOPSIS to ODI migration : AS/400 error in work repository upgrade

Hi,
We're migrating SUNOPSIS v3.2.02.19 to ODI 10.1.3.5.0, with repositories on DB2 AS/400.
We achieve to migrate master repository without any problem, and we try now to migrate the work repository and we have the following error :

It seems that as column name, table name or variable name in migration process is too long, but i don't have any ideas of which. What can i solve this problem ? Any solution or workaround ?

Check out the metalink document for upgrade
Best Practices For Upgrading From Sunopsis To Oracle Data Integrator [ID 437223.1]
Important things to be aware of if you are upgrading from Sunopsis V3:
Sunopsis V3 uses JVM 1.3.1 while ODI 10.1.3 requires a minimum of JVM 1.4.2. This is not an issue if you are upgrading from Sunopsis v4.
Sunopsis V3 allows mixed-case Context Codes, which are automatically converted to upper-case in V4 and ODI versions. To fix the Issue, manual updates of all Context Codes referenced in the Work Repository must be performed. These updates should be made on all Work Repositories related to a same Master Repository.
In Sunopsis V3 DB2UDB Technology definition (\lib\scripts\xml\TECH_IBMDB2UDB.xml), The BLOB is defined with a size of 2G. The Master Repository creation fails at
CREATE TABLE SNP_DATA ( I_DATA NUMERIC(10) NOT NULL, DATA_CONTENTS BLOB(2G)
with error message :
SQLCODE -355 SQLSTATE 42993 SQLERRMC: DATA_CONTENTS
The error means that the column is too large for logging. 2G exceeds DB2 1G limit for Blob datatypes. This is fixed in Sunopsis 4.0.
After upgrading Sunopsis v3 Master to ODI, the user will still run into this issue if he tries to export this upgraded Master and import it into another Master using mimport.bat.
Solution: Modify the upgraded V3 Master Repository TECH_IBMDB2UDB.xml file and change the 2g to 100M. i.e.
<Field name="DdlLongrawMask" type="java.lang.String"><![CDATA[BLOB(100M)]]></Field>
Then try the import again.

• ODI - Migration from french environment to UK environment - issue

hi,
i use ODI 10 and my company decides to install ODI from a french server to a UK server. we did the installation to the new UK environnment (ORACLE 11G). so i start the ODI packages tests and i have new issues on conversion. for example, i try to do an insert query using to_number function and it does not work now. before on the french server, it worked fine.
the issue is an oracle issue with this description "Invalid number". after some research, i found the problem. in my query, i change the number separator point to comma. but i think with UK environment, the separator is now point instead of comma.
i'm blocked because i don' t know where i have to change something (database or ODI).
thanks for your help. it's urgent because we have to finish the migration ASAP
Thanks a lot.

• OWB 10.2.0.4 migrating to updated Solaris OS

We are currently running OWB (runtime) on Solaris 5.8 and upgrading to Solaris 5.10. Is anyone aware of any issues we may face in moving to the new OS?
Specifically, I'm referring to installing the run-time repository on the new OS. Thanks.
Cindy J

Well, in our case we've moved from Windows platform to Solaris 5.10. I've encountered one issue when installing OWB 10.2.0.1 software. At 94% this message appears:
>Error in invoking target 'isqlldr' of makefile '/app/oracle/product/OWB/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk'...
The log shows the following detail:
>INFO: make: Warning: Can't find `/app/oracle/product/OWB:/app/oracle/product/10.2.0:/rdbms/lib/env_rdbms.mk': No such file or directory
>make: Fatal error in reader: /app/oracle/product/OWB/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk, line 2: Read of include file `/app/oracle/product/OWB:/app/oracle/product
>/10.2.0:/rdbms/lib/env_rdbms.mk' failed
The solution was to manually edit the file $ORACLE_OWB_HOME/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk and add the line below:
># Entering /build/s624/rdbms/install/cus_rdbms.mk
>ORACLE_HOME=/app/oracle/product/OWB
>include $(ORACLE_HOME)/rdbms/lib/env_rdbms.mk

• Hyperion Application Link to ODI migration

Has anyone has such experience?

Yup, the only good news is that ODI doesn't stink to high heaven the way HAL did.
In case you can't tell, I was never a fan of HAL. "Necessary evil" kept on popping up in my mind whenever the spaghetti came on screen.
A full rewrite is in your future -- now you can do it the way you always wanted to with a proper tool. :)

• ODI and OWB???

Hi every one I would like to know the difference between Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle Warehouse Builder. Can I use ODI in place of OWB or in reverse??
Thanks,
Pratap.

1. OWB comes free with the 11g DB where as you need to buy ODI.
2. ODI is acquired by Oracle from Sunopsis where as OWB is Oracle's own.
3. ODI is compatible with Webservices etc where as in OWB you cannot call a webservice.
4. For ODI the metadata can be stored in any relational database from any vendor; where as OWB you need Oracle to store the metadata.
5. OWB is ETL whereas ODI is ELT. It takes the power of the target database for Transformation.
6. Data Quality comes free with OWB whereas you need to Buy DQ as a separate module for ODI
7. ODI is completely written in open standard Java language not sure about OWB
8. OWB is good for Data Mininng.
9. ODI easily integrates with Oracle SAO suite tools such as BPEL and ESB
10. I may be wrong but - I think Informatica is a better tool for pure and complex data warehousing projects. Where as ODI is an excellent tool for Integration projects.
my 2 cents

• What is the best practice to migrate code from dev to prod

I have few questions related OWB version control/migration.
1. What is the best way to Version the design repository
We want to keep a separate copy of production and test version all the time.
Do we have to create design repository in each environment ?
2. Is it possible to have multiple copies of the same mapping ? If yes how this is done in OWB
3. How to migrate the code to different environments
2.1 Is there a way to provide DBA with script for deploying PL/SQL mapping without using OWB ?
2.2 How important is the setting before actual code in the XML file is required to execute the mapping.
2.3 We are planning to create tables , materialized view etc., outside OWB will this cause any problems ?
Note : Our DBA prepare compiling the code through SQLPLUS
3. Which user ( target owner or runtime access ) should be used to execute the mapping through sqlplus.
We are looking for a solution were we do not have to use OWB tools for version control , migration and deployment. Currently we are using PVCS for version control and migration.
we are using OWB 9.2 , Oracle 9.2.
Any suggestion/ comments are appreciated.
Thanks,
Sekar,K

Some answers below:
1. Yes, you should use snapshots (right click on t he object and select create snapshot or on the project menu, select Change Manager for a centralized snapshot management).
2. See above.
3. Usually you will export the (test/development) design repository to an mdl file, and import it into the other (production) design directory. Then you will deploy the code from the other design directory into the production target (runtime).
2.1 From 9.2 on, you will have to deploy to file and then use OWB scripting (OMBPlus) to deploy the generated file outside of the deployment manager.
2.2 Not sure what is asked in this question - can you rephrase?
2.3 No, but the creation and use of thes will not be managed and audited by OWB (Runtime Audit Browser)
3.(bis) The target owner.

• BPEL instead of OWF in OWB

Hi
We have implemented 11g r1 database + OWB and are going to migrate to BPEL instead of using Oracle Workflow for our pre-11g OWB projects.
Has anyone used BPEL to implement process flows for OWB. If so could you provide some examples on how to do it.
We have numerous process flows that simple run extracts from source systems, run dimension mappings and then run mappings for cubes. Any help on how to use BPEL would be appreciated as i am completely new to BPEL.
Regards

Hi,
you could already use bpel for owb 10.2. But it is more compley than owf. And the licensing costs are much higher.
I did do a presentation (in german) about bpel and owb 2 years ago. Here are some findings:
- Use Partner-link in Jdeveloper
- One generic webservice for all mappings
- use WB_RT_API_EXEC
Parameter for 10.2
- BACKGROUND = 0
- OEM_FRIENDLY = 0
Return Values:
- Error
- Warning
- Success
But you can still stick with owf, as it is not desupported for use within owb.
