OWB Question

Sorry for that Question but I Have no expierience with OWB.
My question are:
1.) Must the OWB Runtime installed on the same Schema as the Datawarehouse (I mean the data not Meta Data) or is it also pissibel to install the OWB Runtime in a different Database
2.) Have I to install the Runtime Repository and the Target Schema in the same Database
What I plan to do is as follows:
I will install a instance let's say aimis and this is the instance where the data are stored.
I plan to create 3 different schemas named: staging, validation, core. Core should be the schema that owns datawarehouse objects. the other two are for loading and validation.
Can anqone tell me how i should configer them ???
thx in advanced
Andreas

Andreas,
Regarding your questions 1 and 2 - currently the runtime repository schema (runtime metadata) and runtime schema (target schema that will contain warehouse data) have to be installed on the same database. The design repository (where your design is stored and maintained by using the OWB client - i.e. it contains design metadata) can be on a different database (and a different machine).
Not sure about your other question - are you talking about 3 different target schemas? In that case, I would suggest 3 different runtime repositories and associated target schemas (6 schemas in all) on the runtime side.
What is the data flow between these target schemas (if any)?
A common configuration is to have a developemt-testing-production environments. In this ase there are 3 different environments containing a design repository schema, a runtime repository and a runtime schema (target) - 9 schemas in all. To migrate the designs from one environment to the other (usually dev->testing->production), the design is exported from the design repository to an mdl file. Then this mdl file is imported into the design repository of the next environment and the design is deployed, tested etc. in the associated runtime environment (runtime repository + runtime (target) schema).

    Hi,
I am looking to develop a strategy on how someone can use OWB to do data export/import from/into Oracle EBS. (assumming repository already setup in OWB). Any suggestions?

  • OWB - Installation Architecture and Infrastructure configuration

I thought it is a good idea to throw this out to the OWB community to see what your thinking is.
This is my first project; we are currently on detail design. The Client requests a document that covers the following details.
Architecture and Infrastructure configuration for OWB - Oracle Warehouse Builder – which is to be targeted at an ehosting data centre.
    •     What is the best practice either from Oracle
    •     Is it best to go for a 2Tier or 3Tier architecture
    Infrastructure being of interest is:
    •     The use of Application server and web service for giving visibility and access to the runtime / design repository via the repository browser.
    •     The applicable application service i.e.: Control Centre Service
Can this distributed over multiple servers if you application server differs from you database server.
    •     Do you have any information similar to this you compiled in the past that I can use
    •     Or is there any source you can direct me to get this kind of information

Can this distributed over multiple servers if you
application server differs from you database server. This is not an OWB question. This is a database question. You are asking something like 'can I run Oracle with Apache with Tomcat?'. Simple answer is yes. Compex answer is load balancing?

  • Beginner question: no vlaue from dimension fits, want totake "all" element

    Hello,
My next question, this time an OWB-question (or maybe a general DWH question).
    The scenario:
I have to load data into a cube (from different sources) , but not all rows to load have got a corresponding dimension value. Why? Sample:
I have rows where I can say the it is a call, chat or mail. A transaction can be distributed to call, chat and mail. For Example 10 EUR mail, 10 EUR chat, 0 EUR call. But from one source I can not say it is from call, chat or mail. I have the sum of all in the measure.
I designed dimensions in this way ( for example) Dimension REG_PATH:
    ALL-element (node) and the leafes
    -mail
    -chat
    -call
    Levels: ALL_REG_PATH, REG_PATH
hierarchy STANDARD with Levels in this order
    ALL_REG_PATH
    REG_PATH
So when I chose in my frontend (not an Oracle product)
the ALL-element I see all of the objects.
Now I want to load data with call, chat or maybe with the key for the all-element. Ok, no drill down is possible, but it is ok. When I load the data, rows will be load wit call, chat , but when I try to load data also with the value for the all element no data will be load (cube build log say all data loaded?!?).
Can someone explaine what is wrong, why I cant load the data ? Is it not possible to load thne data with the valu from the node ?
    Thanks

  • Help! Ent - 06955 "Cube name does not exist in OLAP schema"

I get this error when I try to view data from a cube or dimension.
From what I've searched, I have to deploy the objects to catalog, which I have done, but still I get the error. I'm stuck with this for 1 and half days...
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I have found some interseting info for you from this forum:
This is more of an OWB question rather than OLAP specific. But there are some steps you must perform with OWB before you can view the data.
    1) Design the dimension - create the levels, hierarchies and attributes
    2) Storage mode - decide if you want to create a ROLAP or MOLAP dimension
    3) Deploy the dimension - if you opted for a ROLAP model this will create a table and a dimension object to be used by the optimiser for query rewrite. If you opted for MOLAP this will create an analytic workspace (you should see a table called AW$xxxxxxx in your target schema) and within that AW will be your dimension.
    4) Populate dimension - before you view data you must create a mapping to move data from your source table into the target dimension. Then you must deploy the mapping and finally execute the mapping to load data into the dimension.
I would check your deployment log as I suspect you have some errors during deployment and the object has not been deployed. Personally, I find the best way to deploy objects is via Control Center rather than using the right mouse click menu options in Design Center.

Next question - do you have all the required patchsets in place to support OLAP? If you are using 10gR2 (which you really should be when using OLAP) you will need 10..2.0.3 + OLAP A patch or 10.2.0.4.
Hope this info. will help you.

  • Few questions about OWB migration 10g---- 11g and UIODs

I am curretly migrating OWB repository from 10g to 11g.
Both repositories are on the same database.
We just have one single Project in our Repository. It is actually(preinstalled) MY_PROJECT renamed into something else. So it has the UOID of the "default" MY_PROJECT but of course, physical and business names are different.
Because we renamed MY_PROJECT, complications occured when we first tried to do the repository upgrade the recommended way, with repository assistant. During the upgrade processes , the error came that the objects with same UOIDs but different names exist.
Obviously, MY_PROJECT from the 10g repository collided with the new, preinstalled, MY_PROJECT in the (almost) empty 11g repository/workspace.
Also, MY_PROJECT in 11g workspace has exactly the same UOID as the one created in 10g repository.
I was told by Oracle support that this was a bug-but they do not see it as high priority, so we had to do workaround --the migration of the repository on 11g.
Now my first Question: Was it completely insane to use MY_PROJECT for your actual ongoing Project? We never had any other problem with this constallation.I also noticed in forums that people indeed use MY_PROJECT for their work.
The second question: Has anybody , ever, seen the same problem, when trying to upgrade to 11g ?
The migration procedure is as follows:
-install 11g Workspace with Repository Assistant
-Export locations and data from 10g repository
-Import locations and data in 11g repository- thé update option -matching on UOID..so we do not get problem with MY_PROJECT
    -register locations in11g repository
    -deploy all mappings and workflows
Now, this all works fine..and our new 11g repository runs without problem..
I am still puzzled by few things :
New 11g repository is almost empty apart from MY_PROJECT and DEFAULT_CONFIGURATION. Now, MY_PROJECT in 11g has the same UOID as in oracle 10. But DAFAULT_CONFIGURATION in 11g has different UOID from DAFAULT_CONFIGURATION in 10g. It is always the same UIOD for every new 11g installation (I've upgraded repository on many databases).
Now 3rd question: Is there any particular reason why DEFAULT_CONFIGURATION  has different UOID in 11g and MY_PROJECT hast the same UOID ? Is there any logic behind it -that I fail to grasp ?
Another thing. I said that I am importing complete Project in the new repository with update option with matching on UIOD. I should get a problem with DAFAULT_CONFIGURATION, I thought, since it is in the full export of the Project and DEFAULT_CONFIGURATION has different UOID than in 11g repository.
But I did not get the problem at all.Default Configuration was simply skipped during the import - visible from the import log.
Therefore 4th question : Why didnät OWB try to import DEAFULT_CONFIG? Is it "internal" object and as such cant't be changed ?
The reason I am so obsessed with UOIDs is that we have automated release procedure (between development, test and production repositores) which is based on comparing UOIDs.
Therefore a s slight trace of concearn on my side, because the DEAFULT CONFIG now has different UOIDs than before. But on the other side, we just propagate mappings and workflows between repositories - I do not see why the default config should matter here .
Thank very much in advance for any answers/suggestions/ideas and comments!

  • OWB workflow question

I'm an OWB-newbie (using PARIS) and have a question about OWB workflows.
I want to create several mapping workflows.
All the mapping workflows should send a mail with the outcome of the workflows (success, error, warning) to an administrator.
I don't want to always code the same mail activity with the same parameter values.
So my idea is to write one subprocess which handles the mail-routine with some input parameters (calling workflow-name, process state (success, warning, error)).
In the subprocess I want to test the input parameter "process-state". If the value is 0 (success) then a mail with the workflow name as subject should be generated incuding an static text e.g. "mapping successful". If the value is 1 then "mapping warning" and so on.
What OWB activity has to be choosen for testing the input parameter "process-state" like an if-then-else construct or a case-construct?
How can the value of the input parameter "workflow-name" be included in the mail-body?
    Regards
    Martin

To my experience, using the OWF for these things is not very practical. I would suggest that you would make your own PL/SQL procedude that does this, and then call that procedure from within the actual mapping (post-mapping), using the values you have there.
This might not be what you want, however. I simply find the email capabilities of OWF too limited for actual work.

  • A simple question about OWB.

I am fairly new to Data Warehouse. I have seen a Data Warehouse node in Oracle Enterprise Manager (9i). Also I have seen Oracle Warehouse Builder we can download from Oracle website.
My question is what is the difference between them.
Also I have installed Oracle9i database on my computer. Can I use this database for OWB?
    Thanks for any feedback.
    Abid Malik

    Yes.
If by 'using for OWB' you mean use the database as a repository or use it as a target, then for that we support 9i (9.2.x or 10g). If you mean as a source database, we support 8i natively - and earlier via ODBC.

  • OWB general questions for effective use.

    Hi all,
I have been using OWB for a while now, and am getting to the point where I want to make sure I am using it effectively.
For example, how does one decide what to include in one project, or to split it up into multiple projects? I am loading a warehouse, and so far I am only loading raw data into tables.
My next step will be to perform ETL on the raw data and start forming more structured warehouse data. Would that step be better contained in a separate project? Would I need to repeat the definitions of the tables in the loading project? Should I just keep the whole thing in one project? The loading project is quite large, as we have raw data from many sources, and it seems to get one file in takes about 5 - 7 OWB objects (flat file, ext table, 2 - 3 mappings, process flow, 1 - 2 tables.)
So I have dozens of mappings, tables, etc.
Even though much of the data comes from different places, it is generally used together by the end users, and the ETL will likely also need to use most of it together.
Is there any "Best Practices" posted anywhere?
Another question that has come up is this: It seems the idea is to create the warehouse structures completely in OWB and deploy to the DB. However OWB doesn't allow for a full table definition, for things like Triggers, or for advanced features due to a later DB version.
So does one just create a "phantom" entry in OWB that is never deployed, and then create the actual table manually, or deploy and then modify manually to add the trigger?
Or are we not supposed to be using DB triggers, and instead control everything through OWB?
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
I think the kind of questions you are asking are more aimed at methodology's not so much OWB. There are plenty of sites you can get this kind of info from one but not necessarily the best being <http://www.ittoolbox.com/>
In any case we use three projects and multiple schemas
project & schema 1 is used to collect data quickly from multiple sources
project & schema 2 normalizes the data (acts as the storage repository)
project & schema 3 is where the datamarts exist (de-normalized data)
this approach allows you to isolate your integration layer from your reporting layer. most changes only affect one of the layers, not all.
as far as creating your structures in owb is concerned I seen no problem, provided you are using a good ER tool and have ironed out any potential problems.
I have certainly created triggers manually and added them after deployment, but in most cases you can use Transformations, post-mapping, and pre-mapping processes to do the same thing, after all the data should only get into the target through a mapping. If it gets in any other way, you have a hole in you bucket.

  • Some problems and questions using OWB

For Igor or anyone who can help me :-)
    Hello Igor,
Thanks for all your help concerning my mapping deployment problem! Now it’s working better ;-)
I used the OWB Runtime Assistant to create a new runtime target schema and i use the owner of this schema as user while logging to OWB.
Now i can create and deploy without problems mappings, tables, functions, procedures, packages, dimensions, views, materialized views, process flows (i have installed the Oracle Workflow Client 2.6.2.0.0 with OWF builder and OWF mailer ).
However I have still some problems and questions :-)
    a) After deploying a mapping or process flow i can execute them from OWB Deployment Manager. How can i schedule the execution of a deployed precess without using OWBDM ? (I want to execute a process every day to perform ETL).
    b) I think i have a problem deploying cubes. I create a cube in OWB, the validation is OK, the deploment succeds, but if i look with OEMC in the tree in the Warehouse OLAP section no cube is created. Only the fact tabe is created. If i look to the scripts from the Pre Deployment generation results i found DDLs only for TABLE, INDEX, UNIQUE KEY, FOREIGN KEY and ANALYZE object types, meanwhile during a dimension deployment i found also a DDL for the DIMENSION type object. WHY ?
    c) If I look in the procedures of the new created OWB Runtime Target Schema I found 3 procedures which are in error and when I try to compile them I receive the following error messages :
    - procedure WB_OLAP_LOAD_CUBE
PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_AWM.CREATE_AWCUBELOAD_SPEC' must be declared
    - procedure WB_OLAP_LOAD_DIMENSION
PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_AWM.CREATE_AWDIMLOAD_SPEC' must be declared
    - procedure WB_OLAP_LOAD_DIMENSION_GENUK
PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_AWM.CREATE_AWDIMLOAD_SPEC' must be declared
How can solve this problem? Is there any link with the fact that the cube is not generated?
    d) When I first acces the deployed DIM in the OEMC tree I receive a message saying that the dimension does not have complete metadata as needed for use by Oracle OLAP services (because is created either in an earlier version of Oracle database or it was created by an an other application than OEMC) and OEMC automatically generates the default needed metadata. Is this normal ?
I work in an environment with
    - Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.1.0
    - Oracle 9i Client 9.2.0.1.0
    - Oracle 9i Warehouse Builder Products 9.2.0.2.8

  • OWB 10.2 Design questions - OLAP objects - worth using? too buggy?

I am designing a 2 tiered data warehouse. I have a staging schema where numerous staging tables and key mapping tables are kept and a data warehouse schema where I have relationally implemented dimensions and cubes. I want the dw layer to be made up of conformed dimensions and facts as per Kimball.
For the DW layer, my plan was to create cubes and dimensions which would be implemented as ROLAP. I would then selectively create MOLAP cubes for subsets of the data warehouse.
My first question - does this much make sense or should I avoid the logical constructs of dimensions and cubes like the plague and simply build star schemas as Oracle tables directly?
Assuming I can use cubes and dimensions - how do I control the column names for the cube foreign keys? I have one cube with several date dimension foreign keys. Using the cube editor I get nonsensical names like time_dim_key, time_dim_key1, time_dim_key2. I want these to be creation_date_fk, expiration_date_fk, etc so that they are readable. I don't see any way with the cube editor to control this.
Also, please see my other posts about errors with the role concept on dimensions.
And lastly, have any of you had success in deploying a large scale DW with OWB using dimensions and cubes?

So far the verdict is TOO BUGGY. There is a documented bug in metalink:

    2) Use relational - My first interpretation of this was that I could generate the cube but use the "data objects only" deployment. No such luck. When the roles are added to the cube, the designer window locks up when the roles exceed 8 for the time dimension.
So, the "use relational" workaround seems to imply that cubes and dimensions should be avoided. Anyone have any contrary experiences?
Specifically has anyone done any of the following successfully with OWB 10.2:
    1. Have you implemented a time dimension with more than 10 roles associated with it?
    2. Have you implemented a cube (relationally or otherwise) with more than 5 roles of a single dimension against it?
    3. Have you implemented a cube with more than 10 dimensions of any kind associated with it?

  • OWB Repository Install Question

    Hi all
I am assigned to oracle ERP project and
owb has to be installed for bis/edw.
at the owb 2.x version, when repository install , following menu appeared
'which operation would you like to perform ?
    create a new BIS Repository
    Drop an existing BIS Repository'
    But owb 9i,
    Upper menu not appeared.
In owb 9i version , Isn't it devied BIS and non-BIS user repository ?
    and
when i created a repository for Oracle ERP,
is there any different function from Non-Oracle ERP repository ?

    Hi Jae Hyun,
In OWB9i there is no distinction between a BIS user and a non-BIS user. Reading your question I expect you are installing the product at a new customer site. Please refer to patch sets 2182987 and 2420974 that are available through Metalink. These patch sets contain documentation on the steps to go through. To manipulate data in the Apps repository you would use the BI assistant.
When OWB is installed for Oracle Applications some of the settings are changed compared to the release that general customers use. I.e. if you would like to build your own data warehouse using OWB I recommend you install OWB in a separate Oracle home, build a new repository and use that for your own project. In that case you would use all settings non-Apps customers use.
    Hope this helps,
    Mark.

  • Quick question - how to use flat files OWB 10gR2

Sorry, really dumb question here. I'm using the OWB client on my windows machine, but the database is on a separate UNIX box.
The data file I'm trying to access is in
    /usr/local/test
and the DBA's have created a directory object ("TEST") inside the database with read privs on that /usr/local/test directory.
Given all that, exactly what do I need to do to:
    a) create the file location in OWB
    b) "see" the flat file in it
When I try to set the directory up, it seems like the client is looking at my local drive instead of connecting to the Unix box?
    Thx,
    Scott

Indeed... if you use the Import metadata wizard, it will look for the flat files on your local machine, but this is only for you to define the layout of this file... when you actually read this file (in a process flow for example) the flat file must be on the server where your OWB repository is installed... notice that this is not necessarily the same server where your database is running.
