OWB Windows Client Accessing Unix Directory
Can a OWB client running on a Windows machine access a Unix Directory Structure?
I'm creating a module for Source flat files using my OWB Client on Windows 2000. Can I access the Unix Direcory structure for these files using the OWB Windows Client.
There are several issues that you may be concerned about here...
First, When you create the Flat File Module you are given the opportunity to enter a directory for this module. This directory is used when importing File metadata via a process OWB calls "sampling". At the time of the "sampling" your OWB client requires direct access to the actual physical flat file. If you are running the OWB client on a Windows PC and wish to access the physical files stored in on a unix machine, you will need some kind of "protocol handler" to make this work. NFS software (i.e. 3rd party) [ as discussed previosly] is the recommended (i.e. highest overall performance, etc) access method. There are others, Samba (which is free, would need to be installed on your unix machine) makes unix directories exported like Windows "shares". These steps are necessary to get direct access to the physical data so that it can be read and help guide you on the way to defining the metadata (ie structure) of the file. If you switch to using a Unix client, the "connection" information for the Flat File Module will have to be "re-entered" to be relative to that particular host.
Second, When you deploy a map which uses the flat file as a source, a SQL*Loader control file will be created to read the data and populate a target table. Im the production versions of OWB, you need to configure the map and supply physical connection information relative to the machine on which the SQL*Loader control file is to be run. So if your database is hosted on a Unix machine, and that is where the SQL*Loader process is to be executed, the "path" information would need to be specified in the unix format and from the database's perspective.

How do I configure my Windows clients to talk to Mac OS X Server 10.6
We had a MacAuthority technician install the server software for us, but he did not configure the Windows clients to talk to the server. I have tried several approaches, all evidently wrong. Everything I have read says the Windows clients need "open directory" passwords, and he has set them up as "shadow passwords". Heaven only knows what else is messed up. Please someone step me through this -- I will set them up as new users and see if I can make it work that way.
What sort of a resulting configuration or environment are you seeking?
If you're looking to have your Windows clients access storage on your OS X Server and to not authenticate with your OS X Server system, then you can dispense with some of the configuration steps.
However if you're looking to have the same login everywhere (Windows and OS X), then requirements become somewhat more complex.
And which version(s) of Windows? Particularly if you have Windows 7, the options and requirements differ.
It's less common to have Windows configured to authenticate to OS X; it's more common to use Windows Server and its Activie Directory, either in isolation or in combination with an OS X Server in what's called a "magic triangle" configuration. Alternatively (if you do want to set up this direct authentication of Windows and OS X Server and Open Directory), then see Mac OS X Server: Alternatives to Windows NT 4.0 domain control (PDC) technology (HT4945); that uses pGina.
And before you proceed here with any work involving authentication, delegation or related tasks, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities folder, and issue the following non-destructive command to verify your DNS is correct:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to specify an administrative password when prompted. Proper local DNS services are central to getting any of this stuff to work, and this command will (non-destructively) indicate if DNS is correct or if there are issues or changes needed.
The OS X Server 10.6 documentation is available from Apple, and that can help provide you with some background in this topic. The 10.6 intro, 10.6 User Management, and 10.6 Open Directory would likely be worth downloading and skimming. Probably also 10.6 File Services, if that's part of your goal. (Running a server isn't quite as no-IT-required as might be hoped, unfortunately. And I don't know of a short cookbook for this stuff; the steps and configurations can vary, depending on your local requirements - apologies on pointing to the docs here.) -

Hi,
The last time I checked - transactional cache cannot be used from Extend clients. Your best bet would be to use "EntryProcessors"
Hope this helps!

NJActually the best bet would be an Invocable sent via an InvocationService accessing the transactional caches from the proxy.

Home directory on Windows clients
Hi all,
I have recently changed the share point location of our home directories from /Home to /home/users.
The change was very easy and went smoothly except for our Windows users.
After moving to the new share point they lost all their data under H:
I noticed that the SMB server still goes to the old /Home directory instead of the afp:/Home (which is mapped to /home/users now).
How do I tell the SMB server were to look for the home directories?
Thanks,
ZivHi
Is it possible a user to login on a mac, and access their home directory that is stored on a windows server via active directory?
Yes. Provided the AD Server has been configured to accommodate mac clients first:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7417304
Can the mac server mount the active dir. share and allow it to be accessed on mac clients?
If the AD Server controls the directory/volume/drive etc for home folder creation then why involve another server?
Also, if this is possible, how would I set up managed preferences for these users?
To manage mac clients using something similar to GPOs available on AD you would need OSX Server. It does not have to be an XServe. Any mac that meets Leopard Server's minimum qualifying spec will do. This is what is I would refer to as AD-OD Integration. Quite a few on this forum call it the 'Magic Triangle'. Its difficult to advise any further on this as a lot depends on what your requirements are and ultimately the AD environment you wish to integrate.
These links should provide more information:

Unix Shell Script-Windows Client
Forget it.If you have to write shell scripts for a Unix server, learn writing shell scripts on Unix. There are many good books and tutorials (and even more bad ones) available.Don't try to write shell scrips on Windows. There's only one tool which I know of which will enable you to use shell scripts on Windows, that's CygWin.Also why do you want to check Unix files from a Windows client??? Could you please explain in a little more detail what exactly the whole process will be? I suspect I may have misunderstood your question. Regards,Nico

Hello
I am trying to install Exchange Server 2010 beta 1 onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 (build 7000) machine which has also been set up as a domain controller.
However when attempting to install the Client Access role, setup fails with the error below.
Does anyone know of a way to get around this please?
I have already searched for this error and not found any similar threads.
Also every time I press the code button on this forum it crashes the browser and I keep losing the message! (IE8 from within Server R2). Also the message box is very small, will not expand and keeps jumping to the top.
Thanks

Robin WilsonHello
Thanks for all the replies.
I have since wiped the system and installed everything again and it all worked this time so not sure what was wrong last time. I did try to uninstall all Exchange components and then uninstall IIS and Application server, reboot and re-install but I received the same error still when it came to installing the client access role.
Walter: I just attempted the standard installation which should have used the default self-signed certificate. Everything was a fresh install done at the same time on a freshly formatted PC.
For info last time when it failed to work:
- Installed Windows Server 2008 R2
- Installed Domain Controller role using dcpromo. I set the forest and domain as Windows Server 2008 R2
- Added a forest trust between main domain and test Exchange domain (set up as ex2010.local)
- Installed IIS and Application Server role
- Installed Hyper-v role
- Installed Desktop Experience feature
- Installed Exchange and recieved the error
When it worked I set up the forest and domain in Windows Server 2008 mode (i.e. not R2), installed Exchange first and then set up the forest trust and then Hyper-v. It did say it failed to configure dns which was probably because it started trying to do automatic updates half way through the dcpromo! DNS seems to work ok though.
I did notice this time that Hyper-v gave a warning about the virtual network adapter not being set up correctly and the local network did not work correctly although I could access the internet. Not sure if this could have been related to the cause of the problem previously. For now I have disabled the virtual network until I get time to try and get it working and so the mail will work in the meantime.
I also noticed that Hyper-v added an extra 443 ssl binding to the default website so as it had 2 bindings on port 443 it refused to start. After deleting one it worked.
I decided to install Exchange onto a domain controller as it is only a test and I wouldn't do it in a live environment. I am also short of test machines! It didn't give me any warnings about this actually, I think previous versions warn you that it is not recommended.
Andreas and Chinthaka: I did not know about the requirement to run the domain at 2003 mode. The main domain is running in 2008 mode with Exchange 2007 so I assume this is just a temporary beta related requirement. It does seem to be working (second attempt) so far in a 2008 mode domain although I haven't had a chance to fully test it yet.
Thanks
Robin
P.S. Sorry it's taken me a while to reply!

A co-worker (Super Brent) and I were working on using iChat as an internal IM server after having used Openfire for a couple days. The reason for switching was basically that we had a Mac Mini Server that was available so we decided to take this on.
First problem: Knowing whether or not Kerberos was needed for AD/OD integration. We spent a ton of time on this, not knowing a huge amount about AD and with our server administrator on courses, we just kept poking at it and removed Kerberos.
For the AD/OD integration, we first bound the Mac Mini to our Active Directory server. We shut off LDAPv3 support as we only wanted to use the AD functionality. Additionally, we ensured that the search policy in Directory Utility only used Active Directory. Then we created an Open Directory master in the Open Directory service. We enabled a self-signed certificate and trusted it locally. After creating the iChat service, ensure that you use the self-signed SSL Certificate and set authentication to Standard. (no kerberos).
Second problem: Once this was complete, we started to test clients out. We were unable to successfully login using our AD credentials using Spark IM and Pandium IM. After trying nearly 100 different variations of server configs, we decided to try a new client. I installed Miranda IM on my Windows XP machine and tried a few different setups. It turned out that the magic potion was to make sure that the "resource" field was set to "Home" and use SSL for encryption. This resource setting was the deal breaker for the other IM clients as many of them such as Spark and Pandium do not have this as a login option.
We ended up using Pidgin IM as the Windows client of choice as it did have the resource variable and it's interface was the best suited for our environment and users.
I hope this helps someone out there as we spent days looking all over the internet trying to figure this out.
Cheers,
Frenchy and Super BrentHi,

But, the explanation of your environment begs the question - what are you trying to do? You say you have a desktop OS and you are talking about Windows Server products. In that light, your question does not make a lot of sense.

Windows client error joining with Samba 4.2 Active Directory server
I have a basic samba 4.2 ADC setup on CentOS 7 and I get a RPC server not available whenever I attempt to join a windows client to the domain. The smb.conf is default on created during provisioning. All indicated pre-testing seems to work as expected. The windows client finds the domain and recognizes a valid user or not but the last step of joining the domain ends with the error "Unable to join the Domain RPC server not available. Does anyone have any ideas?

This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks CommunityI have a scenario for you in active directory when two passwords may be valid:
Old passwords can also work on domain controllers that have not received replication yet from either the domain controller the password was changed on, or the PDC emulator in the domain.
Let's take a scenario where we have a 3 site, 3 domain controller (DC) active directory: Site1 with DC1, site2 with DC2 and site3 with DC3.
The ACS application resides in Site3 and is configured to use DC3 for authentication. We have a user "user1" with a password of "123".
User1 decides to call the helpdesk and changes his password to "456".
The helpdesk uses DC1 to make password changes because they are located in site1. For a period of time (based on replication, which defaults to 3 hours between sites) the 123 password and the 456 password will be
valid.
If the user1 user tries the "123" password it will work until DC3 receives the changed password from normal replication. If user1 tries to use 456, DC3 will flag this as a wrong password, and then check the PDC
emulator of the domain to see if it has received a newer password. The PDC emulator will validate the login, and then trigger an immediate replication with DC3.

You can also share a printer between the Mac/PC as well as files and mounted Volumes, see the Tiger articles here
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/
You may want to use Bonjour for Windows on your PC
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/
Then there are VNC clients for Mac/PC that also allow you to actually control the other machine, if they aren't in the same room and you just need to check something quick that can be handy, it's kind of slow though for regular use.
The main benefit of partitioning is being able to have different versions of bootable OS on them. You can try out Leopard on a new partition, while keeping your Tiger partition intact, you can have a XP/Vista partition for parallels or BootCamp, etc... other than that drives are pretty much fast enough, having smaller partitions probably won't realize any significant speed ups over searching the whole large drive. -

OWB 10g Release 1, version 10.1.0.3, windows client download
Hi,
I am looking for the windows client for the OWB version 10.1.0.3. I am not able to locate the software download anywhere in the Oracle website, could not locate the archive location from where I could download older versions if any.
Any help locating the download in oracle site or in any other means is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,Thanks for your response...
Yeah, I have a client running 10g R1 version 10.1.0.3 server and the only client installed windows machine crashed and they are using the client on the server. It would be very useful if they could have the windows client for that specific version.
We are also doing a fresh install of OWB 10.2.0.5 on a new server and trying to create the repository and import the .mdl project backup from the prod server (OWB 10.1.0.3).
